The Back-Up Controversy

The arrival of Kevin O’Connell has caused many to speculate the future status’ of Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge. Of the two, Ainge proved during the preseason that he was the better man while Clemens floundered with poor showings and a “banged up” elbow. The general population agrees that Clemens will be headed for the door either this month or by the end of the season but Hutch reports that Clemens might be sticking around for a while.

Just spoke to my guy with the Jets and quarterback Kellen Clemens “isn’t going anywhere.” The move to trade for Kevin O’Connell for what is believed to be a conditional draft pick remains a mystery.

The Jets liked O’Connell last year coming out of college and he apparently remained on their radar. One thought is that the Jets know that Clemens won’t be back next season — he’s in the final year of his contract — and they want to have three quarterbacks for next season. Don’t be surprised if QB Erik Ainge or O’Connell comes up with a phantom injury and lands on injured reserve.

As Hutch mentioned there will no doubt be a phantom injury that will cause someone else to end up with Aundrae Allison (which just might save Danny Woodhead) but it will certainly be interesting to see where the back-up situation goes. Don’t be surprised though to see Ainge and O’Connell lead the way behind Mark Sanchez this year if Kellen makes a stink or the Jets decide to cut their losses early.

Ronnie reported in the comments section of Bent’s post that Kerry Rhodes tweeted that fans could expect a big announcement (with an lol afterwards) and at this point after what has gone on so far, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised. And to think George Willis believed the Jets would regret not going after Vick, this alone has turned into a saga.

  1. along the twitter aspect of this post:

The following was posted by ChrebetBoy1 to Kerry Rhodes:

@kerryrhodes Hey im tellin ya, Clemens is gone. Jets traded for K.O’Connell, watch, Jets are making trade move with denver as we speak

Kerry Rhodes responded with the following:

@ChrebetBoy1 u may be right!!! (hint hint)

    What say you???

  2. ok the jets waived:
To make room, Jets waived P Reggie Hodges, T Mike Kracalik, LB Brandon Renkart and RB Danny Woodhead.

    –Adam Schefter–

  3. Dang Ronnie you beat me to it haha. Feel bad for Danny, and surprised at Renkart over Izzo.

Jimmy- check out the post below there’s a huge discussion about that twitter post haha.

  4. don’t be sur[rised if something happens with Michael Crabtree this week, either he gets signed or his rights get traded. Might the Jets be involved. who knows. Jimmy Raye is in San Francisco. Might he want one of his players.

might the Jets trade Clowney or Stuckey with a pick, possible.

  5. JBD no chance. Crabtree can’t be traded at this point it’s sign or no sign until week 10 I believe

  6. ESPN is reporting that we’re going to roll with 4 QB’s…WTF?

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/2697/tannenbaum-jets-will-keep-four-qbs

  7. Hatman,
After week 1 when Ellis returns, there’s no doubt that one of them will come up with an ‘injury’ and placed on IR.

  8. Please, Tanny, NOBODY believes your BS any longer. There’s no way they go into the season w/ 4 QBs.

  9. There are rumors that Kevin O’Connell made a complete copy of the Patriots playbook before turning in the original. Apparently the Lions were the first to get a look at it and immediately thought the Jets would be interested. So it appears the Jets sent a 7th round pick to the Lions for the Patriots playbook and the Lions threw O’Connell into the deal as “cover”.

  10. Wow… that’s all I can say to that Mr. Jet Green… Sounds like something Mr. T would do too!

  11. lol thats not true but if it were true, I would post their playbook on ebay and have the bills, jets and dolphins bid for it.

  12. It would be nice to have the playbook but, does it come with Brady and Moss?

  13. Ahhh man mrjetgreen that was awesome .. I’ll whipe my behind with every page lol .. I hope Rex and tanninbomb are puttin together a trade for b. Marshall .. Clemens stuckey and a 2nd round pick . And it’s a rap

  14. could he be used in trade with denver for marshall he is den coachs boy

  15. there are rumors going around that david harris might be in part of the trade for brandon marshall.
I’d be very upset if this were true.
it’d severely hurt the “elite” defense we are trying to develop.
i’d be much happier trading away bryan thomas if we needed to. he can be replaced with westerman or gholston, if need be.
but for marshall? i think a fair trade is clemens or o’connell, 2nd round pick and maybe brad smith?
    i’d be happy with that.

  16. I agree w/ Sam. Harris is too rare and valuable to the defense we are trying to run. I think he will excel in this system, I wouldn’t mind trading thomas or gholston

  17. no. don’t even trade gholston. he’s coming along.
hopefully he’ll make an impact this year, it looks like he’ll be able to do something.
but i think he’s gonna be a beastly player down the road.
you know a qb has to go, there’s no way they keep 4 qbs on the roster.
if it ends up being oconnell and a 2nd round pick for marshall, who then signs an incentive based contract, then i think tannenbaum is a genius.
he knows the broncos and browns both wanted oconnell, so it would’ve been a great pickup for what i heard was a 7th round pick.
make that trade happen, and is anyone thinking possible superbowl this year?

  18. either way the suspense is killing me.
i’m kind of staying up just to see what happens.
imagine a trade for richard seymour too?
    haha. that’d be awesome.

  19. Browns- maybe Edwards
Seymour would be sick and would make Pats games even more fun.
With Gholston though, I wonder if he is coming along fast enough? I hope he develops, but if we trade him that salary could be used for Marshall. I think he is being paid more than Thomas right now. Besides, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought they were saying that Westerman was going to move ahead of Gholston. I know Gholston is starting for Pace, but if you can eventually get the same production out of Westerman, I think you have to look at it like a business and ship Gholston out. Nothing but conjecture as I sit here waiting for the good news.

  20. i think we could steal edwards from the browns. just because it’s eric mangini.
and haha. yeah but i doubt raiders are gonna trade him to us. they just traded a first round pick for him.
yeah. but gholston still has upside and time to develop. and thomas has been in this league for a long time. and he’s always been so inconsistent. so you trade him and you keep on working on gholston. if you need to. i say start gholston at defensive end most of the time, and at olb for some plays, while letting westerman start in pace’s spot. and i think it’s dumb to ship gholston out yet. you give him until the end of next season to prove himself then you get rid of him.
it’s too soon to tell what’s gonna happen. i mean. it’s tough changing positions. and it’s always a hard transfer to the nfl. so give him 3 years to prove himself. if he can’t do anything in that time. than you let him go. it’s too soon right now.

  21. what’s your thoughts about marshall being a problem for us. characterwise.
do you think rex ryan can set him straight? or no?

  22. I think they believe that they can, they were going to take a shot on Plex. It does say something about how they really feel about their current wide receiver situation. Of which, other than JC, believe we have a great selection of number 3s with potential.

With regard to Marshall’s personality. We are dealing with a guy who had over hundred receptions back to back, who then saw his Coach fired, lost his pro-bowl QB, dealt with all of the b.s. that went on in Denver, and is way underpaid. These factors are like adding gasoline to a fire. Especially when you have a “my way or the highway” type Coach.

I think just coming here to play with a better QB and more stable environment will help things. Next, you are going to have to sign him. Pay him and he will be happy. Finally, I don’t know if it is just about Ryan controlling him or its just the way that Ryan relates to his Players. I think the lines of communication will be well established in that relationship. And really in the end, I think its McDaniels’ inability to properly communicate with his stars (even the Divas) that led to these issues with his team.

Having said that, I believe he is always going to have character issues but the team chemistry seems too strong to be harmed by that. Besides, Bart Scott would probably keep him in check if he became nusiance. We have strong leaders on this team.

  23. true. i think he’ll be fine with this team.
i just hope he won’t make any mistakes off field. because he could then be suspended. but i think with marshall at number 1, jco at number 2, clowney/stuckey splitting time at slot. we’d have one of the best recieving corps in the league. one of the best offensive lines in the league. one of the best running games in the league. and potentially one of the best defenses in the league. we’d be so scary.

  24. I agree… man I have reached my limit… Will see what the morning brings

  25. now supposedly we won’t find out until tomorrow.
and according to kerry rhodes “The big announcement isn’t about B.M. even though that may still happen.”
so maybe there’s 2 big things going on.
however if he was just talking about leon getting extended, i’d be upset.
like we knew that would happen sometime soon, and its’ great, but he’s made it seem like it’s something else that’s huge.
    so we’ll see.

  27. that’s not a big announcement.
so that better not be what kerry rhodes is talking about.
that doesn’t help us win a superbowl.
getting a player that would make us better is a huge announcement.
not getting a possible name to the new stadium.

  28. something HAS to be going on with one of our qbs.
there has to be a trade.
otherwise there was no reason in getting o’connell.
