Tannenbaum says Jets will keep four QB’s on roster

by droseatwork on September 7th, 2009 at 12:10 am

According to Profootballtalk.com

The minute Kevin O’Connell was acquired by the Jets, speculation immediately started regarding Kellen Clemens’ future in Gotham.

Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum wanted to quiet the buzz, so he released a statement on Labor Day eve. Here goes:

“We had a lot of interest in Kevin when he was coming out in the draft last year,” said Tannenbaum. ”He’s smart and athletic and we feel good about adding him to our team. We will move forward with four quarterbacks on our roster.”

Seems interesting that a team that wants to play a violent style of football can afford to spend four roster spots on QB’s.

It makes absolutely no sense. Hopefully, its just Tanny b.s’ing which he happens to do a lot.

this is gonna keep me up all nite

  3. avatar michael says:

clemens or oconnell is a goner by tomorrow

  4. avatar Mark says:

I actually wonder if Ainge might be of interest to some team… He seems to have a little bit of upside. O’Connell would make a nice long-term solution at backup, obviously Sanchez has the starting gig locked in…Clemens doesn’t appear to be worth too much I can’t see anyone really wanting him. Of course, now that I say this, Clemens will be traded by the morning. :-)

let’s all get some sleep . tomorrow is another day. 6 days until kickoff. i love the jets.

  8. avatar Alex says:

I think clemens is getting traded and I believe we will send him to San Fran for the rights to deal with Crabtree. I know there are a lot of rumor about Brandon Marshall, but I don’t know if we can afford him. I going to the opening game here in Houston, can’ wait to see what our defense does.

  9. avatar david harris says:

i dnt think crabtree can be traded until like week 10 or something

  10. avatar Dean Barbella says:

Kerry Rhodes says on Twitter something big might be cooking:

  11. avatar Broadway12 says:

I’m hoping that they trade him and a pick to KC for DB thats the guy they should target young, good hands, and no DIVA attitude as far as I know

  12. avatar Maximus says:

Once Aug 14th passed Crabtree could not be traded until Week 10

  13. avatar JesusRevis says:

Denver liked O’Connell, maybe the Jets got him so they can include him in a trade?

  14. avatar santi171 says:

    i can’t take it anymore

  15. avatar Alex says:

    David Harris or Maximus,

Does their inability to trade Crabtree have anything to do with the fact that he is not signed? In other words, will a sign and trade work?

  16. avatar JesusRevis says:

    The 49ers arent trading Crabtree

  17. avatar Nelson17 says:

If I remember correctly the Jets didnt like him much anyway at draft time

  18. avatar mannyfresh says:

time out…. i dont think its a trade cause wouldnt that be tampering if kerry is tweeting about it???? but he did say clemens may be gone??…..hmmmmm

  19. avatar Nelson17 says:

No thats not tampering Kerry hasnt said anything specific

  20. avatar mannyfresh says:

I THINK WE NEED TO OPEN THE JETS BLOG CHAT ROOM FOR THIS…. EVEN THOU I THINK ITS A JOKE THAT KERRY IS PLAYING ON EVERYONE

  21. avatar santi171 says:

    i hate the anticipation

  22. avatar Mike D says:

I think its Marshall….Mangold’s twitter is saying something is going on too…

  23. avatar mike says:

whatever it is…i hate how its always a time like this where my eyes are bloodshot from the comp. hope Kerry isn’t joking otherwise im tweeting him a complaint for the health of my vision ha ha .

  24. avatar santi171 says:

    hahahaha

  25. avatar Tomsect201 says:

this actually makes perfect sense. If Sanchez goes down this season, Clemens knows the offense and can fill in whereas O’Connel will take time to learn the lingo. Clemens is a FA at the end of the year, has no trade value now and will be allowed to walk but, O’Connell can fill in as the #2 in 2010. Ainge showed he has some skills but that does not make him a #2. Please remember that only 45 are active on sunday’s so, all the up-in-arms on things like Woodhead is crazy b/c he would never be active and carrying 4 QB’s is not a big issue.

  26. avatar mike says:

well i can no longer last in front of the comp….going to sleep hopefully we will all be waking up with a star receiver on the team….GO JETS

  27. avatar Row says:

Well, he HAS to say that if they are going to end up storing one of them on IR. Once that phantom injury hits now he has a history of saying he wanted to keep them all.

  28. avatar Alex says:

Its gonna be a trade – just have that feeling.

  29. avatar I New York I says:

ive had a bit to drink. but it got me thinking.. I have a crazy feeling its the leon extension. No tampering and something positive. i might be far off. but who knows… ill take a WR otherwise.

  30. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Tampering could very well be why Tanny has kept this so close to the vest, only telling the players until it is official. While it’s more common that the players find stuff out through the media after a leak, it’s not uncommon for the players to find out about something first and keep it a secret for internal purposes.

  31. avatar Bent says:

Clowney just tweeted It’s official: Marshall to the Jets per CNN but then followed it up with “I don’t know if this is true”.

I think I’ll wait for a reputable source.

  32. avatar Ed L says:

Who could we possibly have given up?

  33. avatar Bent says:

There’s nothing on CNN. Either Clowney is messing with us or Rhodes is messing with him.

  34. avatar TJBfan says:

From what I’ve read(and Bent/Bassett feel free to verify or correct me), the 49ers can’t trade the right to Crabtree any longer since there’s less than 30 days until the season starts.

At this point they have until week 10 to sign him and if he isn’t signed at that point he is eligible to re-enter the draft(aka he held out the whole season).

Seriously I was all for crabtree at the draft but seeing the way he’s acted, I would have been kicking myself if the Jets picked him over Sanchez. Regardless of how both careers turn out, Sanchez is professional and signed as soon as possible to be able to learn as much as he can and be a leader. At the same time Crabtree is sitting at home because he feels he should be getting paid more than heyward bay because his talent surpasses him…..get real.

He’s costing himself more money by purposely sidelining himself this season…I understand sometimes veterans hold out because they’ll only get limited chances at free agency in their career but this kid hasn’t played a single snap and is acting like he’s owed the world.

I digress…this 4 QB charade isn’t fooling anyone T. We think Sanchez is our future QB so we need to use 3 roster spots to back him up? Yeah that’s exactly why we jumped up to get him at the 5th pick overall….to get 3 relatively inexperienced guys behind him!

One of the blogs in Denver is saying their just trying to have fun with us.
    http://broncotalk.net/2009/09/8998/broncos-buzz/jets-s-kerry-rhodes-teases-brandon-marshall-trade/

  36. avatar TJBfan says:

Oh and Bent to clear up the twitter thing, clowney never said it he was just Re-Tweeting what a fan said and he responded with an I don’t know I just show up to work

  37. avatar jmac the man says:

Tannenbaum is outthinking himself here. By making it “clear” the Jets want “4 QBs on the roster,” he’s trying to imply that Clemens is good enough to be number 2 in our rotation. If he’s good enough to be our number 2, he may be good enough to trade.

I hope someone with a WR buys this BS, although somehow I think that’s unlikely.

  38. avatar Bent says:

Thanks TJBfan…I know Clowney doesn’t really know how to RT so I was wondering.

Re: Crabtree. You’re absolutely correct that they have passed that deadline. However, even before the deadline, he would only have been an option for a team that had enough of their rookie pool allocation remainining. Nearly every team would have exhausted theirs unless they were extremely cheap (in which case they wouldn’t be a player for Crabtree) or were specifically saving the room to sign him (in which case they would have doneso). I don’t think he was ever likely to be traded (and the Jets were never an option once Sanchez signed).

  39. avatar mike says:

wouldn’t we have heard something already if it was a trade. now im started to feel this is turning out to be nothing. Kerry told us about this big news yesterday afternoon. maybe he though we were getting Marshall but a trade fell thru.

  40. avatar johnsec.125 says:

i see no rhyme or reason with this. tan man better have a plan.

  41. avatar Green Lantern says:

Don’t write it off as Kerry is playing us just because you dont feel like waiting anymore. He said he wasn’t playing and he said it involved a WR, SO STOP SAYING ITS A LEON EXTENSION. Doesn’t it make sense he is waiting so they can’t say he was tampering if its a Leon extension he could of been told us that.

  42. avatar mike says:

where did u see him say it involved a wr? the “you may be right” hint hint”? when asked about Marshall? if he wasnt playing right there then we obviously already know the news marshall is a jet.

  43. avatar mike says:

and we don’t know if anything fell through after what Kerry said. maybe he though there was a done deal that just fell through and that’s that. if something really happened we definitely would have heard something already.

  44. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Kerry is probably not messing with us. He is the type of guy that knows if he screws with Jet fans they might turn on him. Plus he takes his tweeting pretty seriously …. as ridiculous as that sounds….lol

It might not be a big deal but I think what he is saying has some merit….at least a little

OMG imagine if Mangini was still the coach. He would have had Rhodes arrested.

  45. avatar Green Lantern says:

No we wouldn’t have how many times have you heard a rumor of a trade happening before it actually happened

  46. avatar mike says:

yea but this isn’t a rumor. we don’t even know whats going on. we just know Kerry yesterday afternoon said expect a big announcement. nothing turned up so if he new we were getting Marshall then what happened? its 9:45 in the morning and he said this yesterday afternoon if he heard a trade go down then it most likely fell through by now and he suspected we were getting Marshall. that’s my take.

  47. avatar Green Lantern says:

It didnt fall through he said it takes time.
I said How Many Times have you heard about a trade before it happened?

  48. avatar mike says:

many time, but will see what happens. i went to bed at 3 in the morning so i am a little annoyed at this point but yea time will tell i just really hope Tanny isn’t doing anything stupid.

  49. avatar cabras says:

Rhodes should be watching film on Andre Johnson, not playing reporter. This guy must have mirrors all over his house (loves himself), if he was a receiver he would be worse than TO.
Kerry, just worry about playing, that is what you are, a player, you will have plenty of time to tweet.
What is he going to tweet when he fails to offer cover help?

  50. avatar Green Lantern says:

He isn’t just tweeting to be tweeting he is tweeting breaking news for the fans. You should be happy he is even telling us. Get your pessimistic self out of here.
You guys ever notice the person that criticizes Kerry on here that there is something wrong with that person?

  51. avatar mike says:

I cant help but wonder what kerry’s next tweet will be and when. he will probably come out and say sorry to all the fans for the long wait again. I just don’t get whats going on hopefully will hear from Kerry soon. i also love kerry’s personality, hes nothing like t.o hes his own self when it comes to his personality and he loves his fans in my opinion. he wouldn’t be doing all this if he didn’t.

  52. avatar simplysimon2 says:

At the 7th level of “IF”; “if” in fact Marshall is trade bait for the Jets and “if” the Broncos insist on Harris and “if’ the Jets say “no way Jose” about Harris, then sitting still and waiting for the Broncos to sweat a trade, any trade, to rid themselves of their embarrassment might be the way to play them. “If” the jets are playing the Broncos, waiting them out (God, this is a lot of BS ifs), then “if” all this speculation is true, we will find out by tomorrow, “if” not sooner or “if” not, later.

  53. avatar cabras says:

Green Lantern, pessimism is actually realism when you are a Jet fan LOL!

  54. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

All I know is that if this stuff ends up being nothing, Kerry has turned himself into the boy who cried wolf, and it will be hard to take anything he writes seriously.

  55. avatar Green Lantern says:

HAHAHA ok ok that was a good one. Touche cabras.

  56. avatar jvsvn says:

This whole situation makes no sense as it currently stands. Why would the Jets need 4 inexperienced QBs on their roster. How does the team benefit from that? And all this stuff with the Rhodes tweets, etc. It’s simply crazy (and very unprofessional on the part of the Jets to allow it). This can not be the end of the story. Another move will be made.

  57. avatar brian311 says:

i agree this makes no sense but lets remember last year the jets carried 4 QBs and 2 kickers. i dont know who you peg the 53 man roster on (the GM or the coach) but it is clear that Mr T’s strength is not the roster. im freaking pissed they cut woodhead and are now carrying 4 QBs. I really hope there is a way to get woodhead on the team or practice squad

  58. avatar Mike D says:

Rhodes just said for those of you who think its Marshall guess again….then he said gotta wait til tommorow….prob leon extension at this point
