More Roster Shuffling: Jets Sign LB, Waive FB

by Bent on September 8th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

According to Dan Leberfield, the Jets have signed former Titans LB Ryan Fowler, who was brought in for a workout yesterday, and seemingly waived FB Jason Davis.

The 250-pounder is 27 and although he was only an undrafted back-up with the Cowboys for three years, he showed enough potential for Tennessee to sign him to an $11.5m contract. However, he lost his starting job to Stephen Tulloch. He played every game last year for the 13-3 Titans and figures to give the Jets some much needed depth at the inside linebacker positions.

Edited to add: john l gets a belated haaaaat tiiiiip! Happy now?

    That’s an excellent move.

a hat tip would be nice….

  3. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Frankly, I do not understand these moves.

The good thing is that we are talking players unlikely to help this team this season.

But, I have thought we are deep at Inside LB (and now, if any of these guys are any good TE) OLB still concerns me as does WR.

While I would have preferred to keep DW as insurance at RB (Shonn backs up and will soon replace TJ but no one on the team resembles Leon’s skill set), at least Davis backed up a position where we had zero depth, FB.

Meanwhile, we have not upgraded WR.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

So now we have 4 RBs and no backup FB. Is this correct?

  5. avatar TJBfan says:

    Nope Lonnie, 3 rb 1 fb but..4 qb :-/

Tanny adds and drops players like it’s fantasy football..

  7. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

Caulrick is our backup full back isn’t he?

  8. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

I heard a rumor that were looking at lorenzo neal. Imagine him AND t-rich! power running game indeed…

    Here’s Kerry’s “big announcement”

    http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/3214-jetblue-touches-down-as-jets-official-airline-partner

Nothing too exciting- just a promotion to get cheap flights to away games and I think they are sponsoring part of the new stadium but not the naming of it.

  10. avatar Bent says:

    Sorry, john. Better?

Jeff – I guess he is, although while he’s on the practice squad as he currently is, that leaves him exposed.

  11. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

Jeffdolini – Caulrick is on the practice sqad..

  12. avatar april20 says:

    Amazing!… oh wait… I mean who cares?
    Oh wait.. we do.

  13. avatar Bent says:

vinny – yes, apparently they want to wait until after the first game so they don’t have to guarantee his contract.

PS – For those of you waiting for news from Kerry, he made his big announcement.

  14. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    What was it?

  15. avatar MEL31602 says:

I tried to put the link up but I couldn’t get it but basically it’s a deal with JetBlue for a sponsorship- not naming rights of the stadium though.

  16. avatar Bent says:

As we thought it was just the Jetblue partnership (no, not stadium naming rights, just a partnership), so they’re offering cheap tickets to road games (today only) and he’s doing some kind of contest.

Some people will be annoyed at this, but the mass hysteria it caused was pretty unique and not really Kerry’s doing.

  17. avatar JtotheEtotheTtotheS says:

I have a feeling Dave Harris will now be part of the trade for Brandon…

I do not what this thug!

  18. avatar Bent says:

If he couldn’t make the Titans as a backup, I doubt they’d bring him in here as a potential starter with just a few days to learn the playbook. Let’s hope not anyway!

He replaces Renkart on the roster and, although I like Renkart, this is probably an upgrade (certainly in terms of experience).

  19. avatar Brendan says:

the marshall trade is dead. harris is not going anywhere.

  20. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Booo! I was hoping for naming rights.

Kerry can tweet whatever he wants. His big suprise could have been that he got new curtains and I’d have been cool with it. We sure did jump all over it tho.

  21. avatar MEL31602 says:

Eagles also signed Alex Smith so there goes another TE we could have gotten.

  22. avatar JetFanINLA says:

    WHAT ABOUT WR
    anything in the works??????????????????

  23. avatar nyr2k2 says:

Backup FB? Really? It’s not as if there are a bunch of awesome backup FBs out there right now. Anything we’d bring in now is another teams garbage. There will still be plenty of flotsam and jetsam available during the regular season if the need arises for another FB.

  24. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Lorenzo Neal is NOT flotsam & jetsam, we can really use him if were going to run as much as Ryan thinks we will.

As for a wr, theres really not much out there thats better than what we have so why go nuts for the waiver wire?

  25. avatar nyr2k2 says:

I don’t know, how good is Lorenzo Neal at this point? He’s almost 39 and was cut by Oakland, who is starting a FB that missed all of 2008. I’m not saying he’s finished, but he’s not the Lorenzo Neal of old at this point in his career.

Also, would he even want to come here as a backup?

  26. avatar Jeff says:

Oakland has a plethora of pretty good fullbacks. They just have a terrible offensive line.

Oh yeah, we released Caulcrick :-/
