Remember That Big Announcement? It’s Cool, But Not What 92% of Fans Were Looking For

UPDATE: Rhodes has made his announcement, it’s sounds like it’s partially attached or similar to the JetBlue thing, he’s giving away tickets to the MIA game and a hotel room … very cool of him to do that. Still some fans will cry foul.

All I can do is think of this South Park video.

So did The Big Announcement just happen? Although Rhodes hasn’t confirmed it’s most likely this partnership with JetBlue.

In the wake of that, the Jets have a big today only sale for Divisional away games to the Jets. $12 tickets to Buffalo and Boston to honor Joe Namath, along with $50 tickets to Florida in honor of … Vernon Gholston?

[Cue mobs with pitchforks and torches]

For fans looking to go to away games, wow this is quite a deal and yes, it’s very cool, to be sure.

That said, for all the hubbub Mr. Rhodes might have caused over the weekend in the fevered minds of the general public about Leon extensions or Brandon Marshall trades, he might catch some flak on this … I don’t blame Rhodes so much for the stir (I’ll lay that at the feet of ProFootballTalk and the mouth breathers who believe everything they read on PFT) but there could have been some more careful qualification on what this was or wasn’t by Rhodes. The phrase imaginations running wild comes to mind.

To be frank like the Pentagon guys in the SouthPark clip, I nuked my own imagination long ago. That it came back to Bruce Speight having to make statements on it probably wasn’t exactly what most folks in the Jets front office were looking for — or then again, maybe it was.

To be honest, I treated this whole thing with some cynicism and I’m sorry to say I wasn’t disappointed.

  1. yay for jetblue deals to other cities that are only available today. yay.

I am overcome with joy. yay. i am oh so happy i am a follower of kerry rhodes twitter. yay.

One day, maybe not in my life time, but one day the Jets will find a way to make the fan base completely happy with a surprise announcement.

    yay.

  2. Imaginationland was epic!

This announcement, which Kerry has now confirmed, was not.

It could’ve been a lot worse though!

  3. That’s awesome….but aren’t we overlooking one thing???

The Jets play in Toronto not Buffalo this year!

  4. you’re right… they could have announced a partnership with O’Doul’s, so us suffering jets fans can’t even drink away the misery when at the games!

  5. Brian–I believe that the Jets are playing Buffalo in Toronto this year. Wonder if the sale applies there.

  6. Upon reviewing the play…the ruling on the field stands.

Travel dates must be between Sept 12th – Sept 27th…and are one way tickets. So I don’t really see how this is helping any fan…at all. I would have def gone to see the Jets play in Mami or Toronto if the airfare was cheap though.

Maybe they are trying to ship some fans to divisional rivals one way to have a better advantage during the game? Slick move.

  7. The fact that Rhodes was tweeting about “big announcements” and not one other player was made me think this had nothing to do with the team itself.

This is an awesome deal, and people should take advantage if they have the chance. And anyone who chastises Rhodes for this is seriously unbalanced. For normal folk, who never get to follow the team on the road, a $12 plane ticket to Boston or a $50 plane ticket to Miami is an awesome deal.

Who honestly thinks that a player would be tweeting about the inner-dealings of his franchise?

  8. This has nothing to do with the new stadium, does it? Jetblue Field would be a great name for the stadium.

  9. Rhodes next Big Announcement? He’s writting a pamphlet intitled “How to lose your twitter following in 72 hours?”

Love him as a player, but jeez, I can’t stand a company shill. Last time i pay any attention to anyting he says. The guy can’t be trusted.

  10. Apparently, full-time naming rights are too much for anyone to afford in the current climate. I guess it’s the New Meadowlands for the foreseeable future although maybe the naming rights will change on a game by game basis. I still think we should just all refer to it as slinky stadium because that’s what it resembles.

  11. The $50 tics I think are in honor of 50 years of the franchise- a Gholston flight would speed to its destination but then stop just short and crash

… Sorry for the bad attempt at humor.

  12. and, JetBlue field would be a good name….but if the Mets were too stupid to get the insurance Co “Met Life” to sponser their stadium….well, you know how dumb large orginazations are.

  13. “The guy can’t be trusted.”

That’s not 100% fair, Nick. The Jets probably asked him to do it via twitter, and to be candid and playful to create a minor buzz, but once people started anticipating huge player acquisitions and the whole thing snowballed, his hands were tied because there was actually a media embargo on releasing this information until today. He already apologized to anyone who was misled.

  14. Surely a Gholston flight would never get off the ground. Or mysteriously disappear from the runway. Or get easily blocked by air traffic control. Or fly around aimlessly looking lost…

  15. Nick,

Yeah, the Mets were “too stupid” to take the best offer by about $5 million per season. My god, what they must have been thinking. If you think for 5 seconds Woody wouldn’t jump at the chance to name our field Cialis field because the ocmpany offered an extra $10 million/season then you’re nuts.

  16. From the beginning, I knew it couldn’t have been a trade. No reports/leaks about it. The jets wouldnt allow him to post something like that before the deal is complete. However, I did think that it was about Leon’s contract extension which would probably be better news to me than acquiring Marshall (giving up draft picks and giving him a new deal).
But for it to turn out to be the jetblue story is a big let down.
But still no love lost on Rhodes.

  17. Kerry just played us like Sacha Cohen played the world with Bruno…all this hype and then we get smacked in the face with a you know what…

Its kinda funny actually. Nice commentary on how crazy we all are and how intense the whole twitter thing is.

  18. Sweet, I’m going to buy a $12 plane ticket to Buffalo so I can watch the Jets in a Buffalo sports bar while they play the Bills in Toronto……. That has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

Way to think things through Mr. JetBlue Marketing Genius… and just think, we’re approaching 10% unemployment in this country while this genius is probably making $200k+/year.

  19. Bent -

On one hand the guy is pretending to be friendly, giving you the inside scop on what’s it’s like to be him….but he’s really just another dude trying to sell us something.

I’m not in any way saying he’s a bad guy, or even that he’s wrong in any way….but, he’s proven that he’ll wast our time to help make the team a buck (again, nothing wrong with it) so I don’t see any reason to trust what he says in the future.

I have no doubt that he was asked to do it….but I’ll bet Chad Ocho was asked to do similar things, and instead he stopped tweeting.

  20. Understood. I think he was taken aback by how this went and doubt he will be persuaded to do it again (or if he does, he’ll give it a more modest build-up!)

  21. I have to say that I am not into “twittering”. It strikes me as some sort of extension of video gaming. IMHO, both seem to take up valuable time. Don’t know about everyone else, but I’m pretty busy trying to make a living and put my kid through college. I love football and sports in general, but I do not need to know what a player thinks in his spare time, or what they may twitter next. Much more important things to concern myself with. Still waiting for an interesting article on our new punter and TE.

  22. I just don’t see how someone could try and say this is Rhodes selling out, or something to that effect. Yes, he’s probably doing this for a payday, or at the very least because he knew his name would be mentioned in the news, but he’s also giving the fans a chance to travel with the team. Instead of complaining, people should be grabbing $50 flights and turning the MNF game into a Jets home (like the Steelers did to the Skins last season). Give it a rest, everyone. People are just always looking to obsess and criticize and it’s getting old.

  23. “Or fly around aimlessly looking lost…”

    lmao…nice.

Kerry Rhodes trying to help the team make a buck…wow, im shocked. how dare he help his employer.

  24. Bassett,
    How about this clip?

  25. Brendan -

You miss the point, there is nothing WRONG with calling it citi field…but it’s a poor BUSINESS decision. What is more valuable…5 million in cash or your fan base identifying with your stadiumn? The Mets built a place that no one wants to go to because it carried over none of the spirit of the team. That is a bad, short sited business move. Period.

    Now the twitter:

There is nothing wrong with him helping his employer make a buck…but there is also nothing wrong with switching channels during the commercial. KR turned his twitter site into a commercial. I don’t have the time to be bombarded with yet another advertisement.

  26. Why would you guys actually think he was talking about a trade? Isn’t it against league rules for a player to leak trade info before it goes through? It was obviously going to be a fan promotion.

  27. You either take the deal or you leave it. I’ve been watching the tirades of some on Twitter regarding the announcement, and it’s clear that they’re “off their rocker”. It’s hilarious how some of them are deeming Kerry as wack, but yet, they continue to follow him. The man apologized for the misunderstanding regarding Marshall. What more could you possibly want? An arm and a leg?

And Ocho is an entirely different story. The main reason why he’s no longer tweeting, at this point in time, is because he just couldn’t refrain from playing a game of “Back and Forth” with others. You can thank his earlier conduct on his page for that one.

  28. Not what I expected but its still pretty cool.

  29. Unless I’m missing something I’ll say it again,

the travel dates for the tickets are in September….unless u plan on being in miami for a month

  30. I’m annoyed that this was marketed as being related in any way, shape or form to our away games. I was really excited when I first saw this as my friends and I were planning a ‘guys only’ trip to Toronto to enjoy Jets football and some good Canadian beer.

This is a poor attempt by JetBlue to capitalize on our love of the Jets in order fill flights during their typical annual slowdown period. It’s things like this that make me DESPISE Woody Johnson and the members of the Jets front office.

  31. Bent, on September 8th, 2009 at 2:35 pm Said:

LMAO. Awesome, Bent. Awesome. I’m not disappointed too. This really is for the fans, just as he said. I had a lot of fun following this too. Was a really neat event overall and for the hardcore, this is a dream come true! $50 ticket to Miami! Oh man, I’m there.

  32. Pete57,

I couldn’t agree more. I already consider cell phones a minor nuisance, can’t ever imagine myself “twittering”.

  33. Here’s what I loved from the announcement:

“As New York’s hometown airline, the Jets are core to what it means to be a sports fan in the city,” said Barger.

Seriously? I’m as big a Jets fan as anyone else here, but the Jets are the ugly stepchild of NY sports. The only team in the area that gets treated worse is the Nets.

  34. i actually joined twitter 4 a day just to see what was goin on but if you read his tweets you can tell it had nothing to do with a trade…probably just got some extra cash from jetblue and the jets to do so…as long as he does good on the field im sure the fans will forget this happened…got to go and book my long awaited trip to buffalo woohoo!!!

  35. im so pissed…in the greek isles…cant find a place that will show NFL….gonna miss my first season opener in 30 years..ill be at the home opener tho…and the miami game….thanks for the offering kerry rhodes…you will make a true fan happy….section 137 stand UP!

  36. Kerry better worry about Andre Johnson not Twitter, but as a capatilist I am all for a guy making coin.

  37. This was obviously a PR stunt from jetBlue and the Jets… and a pretty good one at that. we’ve all been talking about this for days.

Kerry is the perfect person for this – the face of the D, totally active on Twitter, and just generated a ton of press for an announcement that probably would’ve gone under the radar on the day after Labor Day had he not done his part.

I wonder if existing contract stipulations about “promotional appearances and support” extend to online/social media.

Anyone who’s been following the NFL for any amount of time should realize that a player would NEVER break contract/trade info or news about another player, regardless if it were on Twitter, or in your traditional print newspaper. The FO would’ve put the kibosh on that faster than you can say ‘Child Please.’

  38. Oh relax how can you guys be mad about this? I thought it was entertaining and exciting.

  39. I thought it was very symbolic, like Rhodes it was full of potential, but also like him in a game not much on delivering the goods.

  40. I don’t know which I find more surprising, the massive speculation here when Rhodes tweeted his initial promise of “news”, or the backlash and disappointment upon the revelation of said “news”.

Twitter is the flavor of the month.

    Who takes such things seriously?

TJB’s immediacy is great. Getting our fixes of Jets news nearly as it happens is a wonderful thing, and I’m truly appreciative of those who make it happen. But apparently this isn’t enough for many people. They need it NOW. Hell, they need it yesterday. Twitter provides the illusion of bringing you the news BEFORE it happens. The reality is it brings you reams of trivial information, or outright misinformation, along with the occasional nugget.

I’m so glad that the days when I had to wait for tomorrow’s paper are long gone. But the internet is more than enough for me.

Then again, I’m old. Maybe I’m just a curmudgeon.
