I Sure Hope Steve Weatherford is the (Ray) Guy ..
Varying reviews on the punter so far it seems ..
After his first day, Rich Cimini had this to say about Steve Weatherford.
Based on today, the Jets soon might be in the market for another punter. Steve Weatherford, just signed from the Jaguars, had — how can I put this delicately? — a rough time of it during the early portion of practice. Maybe it was just one of those days. Lately, the Jets’ punters have been having those days every day.
After two days , here’s what Leberfeld had to say.
While it’s only been two days, so I don’t want to rush to judgement, but newly-signed punter Steve Weatherford seems to be more consistent than the man he replaced. And he seems to do a good job with the directional kicks that Mike Westhoff likes to call.
As long as Weatherford can kick the ball hard and can hold a snap, I hope that Westhoff has found someone he feels like he can worth with .. we’re only what … THREE DAYS away from the regular season now?

I think he’ll be fine…and I’m not your Ray, guy..
Good cause I gotsa gets me a #9 Jersey /sarcasm
Cimini reported that he improved during the next practice, hopefully he can just be consistant. The cover teams need to know where the freaking ball is going to do their jobs.
Two totally different punters may have the same 42 gross average, it is the distribution of the mean that matters.
Need a punter that hits his punts between 40-45 yards 95% of the time, not one that kicks half his punts 52 yards and the other half 32. Same average, much different result.
It would help if Punter A could land a few inside the 10 yard line in the process, but that would be too much to ask at this late stage of the game.
I care about the directional kicks more than anything, an accurate kicker is better than a powerful kicker in my eyes so if he kicks it inside the 20 a lot, I dont mind if his average is only 40 yards
hey can someone explain to me this whole black out thing for games?
am i really not going to be able to see games? i live about 10 minutes from Giants Stadium.
Nelson, unfortunately his percentage of inside the 20 and 10 kicks is actually worse than Graham and Hodges, so best we can hope for is consistancy and hang time so the cover team can be there when the ball drops.
Still dont understand why they dont punt the ball out of bounds every time until the NFL outlaws it.
40yards, no return, end of story.
First, dont panic, the team does not want to be embarrassed so they will find a sponsor (JNJ?, JET BLUE?) to buy up all the remaining seats to avoid the blackout.
IF they don’t the game would be blacked out on NETWORK TV in the local market.
Only way you could see it would be to purchase the NFL package or go to a sports bar near you that has it.
This guy is a veteran and has kicks for a few years.
Maybe just maybe we can finally have a guy that just dosent suck
“Still dont understand why they dont punt the ball out of bounds every time until the NFL outlaws it.
40yards, no return, end of story.”
Didn’t they teach trigonometry at your school? :o)
i would rather take a chance at possibly getting a turnover on the punt.
“IF they don’t the game would be blacked out on NETWORK TV in the local market.
Only way you could see it would be to purchase the NFL package or go to a sports bar near you that has it.”
That second sentence is not true. If the sports bar or NFL package owner is in the local area, it is also subject to the blackout rules. You would need to travel approx. 75 miles away from the market in order to view it.
Blackout rules need to be fixed. Maybe if it affected the NE Patsies one time the NFL would definitely change the rule.
how is it this difficult to punt??
Wow…this blackout stuff is so stupid….goodell has to fix that…i mean not for nothing we are the reason the NFL even exists and because there is a recession going on and jets fans can’t really afford the high priced tickets who suffers? the fans….not the players they still get paid there millions….
It really is horrible….
brian 311…
i was thinking the same thing…
i like Weatherford. if he can tackle Leon Washington, no PR should be a problem for him
I’m glad someone else remembers the sleeper hold weatherford dealt lil’ Leon last year. Sleep tight sweet prince… U guys don’t happen to have a video of that, do ya?
OT: The gift that keeps on giving.
“NFL looking into Brett Favre’s comments that Jets knew about torn biceps tendon, but wasn’t on injury report
Source: ESPN”
After giving up a 3rd round draft choice to get him, and loosing the 7th rounder that was supposed to come back from Green Bay after he “retired”, the Jets could lose another one, say a 5th, if this story turns out to be true.
Don’t worry about blackouts….the jets are sold out now for season tickets amd there are only a few games available on ticketmaster left…..the tickets for sale on stubhub and nfl ticketexchange don’t count against blacking out a game because those are all season ticket holders that prchased those seats already
I heard on ESPN on Tuesday that Goodell spoke with the owners and determined that the Blackout rule will not be re-worked or resolved. So basically the NFL is stuck with it.
What a stupid rule!!!
