Video Link: NFLN AFC East Preview

By Bassett on 10. Sep, 2009

NFL Network previews the AFC East and runs through the teams in the division.

Here’s what Mike Mayock had to say about the Jets defense in the clip:

“I think Rex Ryan’s ego is big enough that he can step in — and he might be right — and make Gholston play like an All-Pro. Remember, two years ago, Gholston was a top ten pick. He couldn’t get on the field last year even in special teams. Now on tape in college this is a kid who played about one out of every four plays hard, but if anybody is going to get to him it’s Rex Ryan. If he can play well, along with the acquisition of Bart Scott, then I think you’ve got a completely different team on defense.”

We agree with Mayock. Mangini’s silent, yet seething charcoal-briquette-up-his-posterior on the sideline demeanor wasn’t what Gholston needs. There was a story told during the fourth preseason game broadcast of Jets TE Jack Simmons coming back to the sidelines after a play when he dropped a pass (how novel).

Simmons had told the broadcasters that rather than have Ryan scream in his face, he looked at him coldly and said “you’re better than that.” Simmons had then told the broadcasters that it was worse than Ryan screaming and was a better motivator for him. No one’s perfect, but I think that Ryan is clearly much more in tune with his players than the last coach. I hope it works out to Gholston’s favor.

Lers pray that it works. If Gholston proves to do nothing, then we might as well restructure his contract and pay Leon what he is making for doing nothing

Does anyone in this world believe that maybe, just maybe, the Pats aren’t good as everyone thinks they are? They have a really young defense that just traded away their best player, a QB that will be attacked all season and a weird running game with undefined roles. Im not saying the Jets will beat them both games… but I think we can hang around.

I would respond better to “you’re better than that” too. I hated coaches that screamed at me the same way he screamed at everyone else. It just seemed so BS and forced and like he didn’t “get” me. Some people need to be slapped, some need to be reasoned with, some need to be pushed quietly, some need to be shown the right way, etc. A great coach knows that, knows HOW to do it, and most importantly, doesn’t let the players think they are being treated too differently (favoritism). Not an easy task, we’ll see if Rex is up to it.

If Gholston has at least 2 sacks, a few tackles (alone/shared), and some rushes out of the first 4 games Pace is out then this kid is not a bust!

I still think this kid (yes kid) needs to be in the game more frequently to develop. That was something Mangini never did.

Its a good thing that VG will be playing ROLB and Pouha/Devito will be playing LE for this game
