Buzz: Eagles Shopping Hank Baskett

Are the Eagles trying to trade Hank Baskett? Could the Jets be interested?

There are rumors floating around the NFL that the Philadelphia Eagles are attemping to trade WR Hank Baskett. The Jets could use a big physical receiver, and the 6-4, 210-pound Baskett might be a good fit. Jets assistant GM Scott Cohen, who came over to the Jets from the Eagles front office last year, knows a lot about Baskett, so he could give them good insight on the player

Cohen has started a succession of bringing in a number of former Eagles players, so it’s definiteley true that he would have some awareness of the Wide Receiver. The Eagles are going to have to release someone else next week when Vick comes back, and the team is stacked at Wide Receiver, so this very well could happen. If the Jets are going to make a play for a guy like Baskett, I think it will have to happen in the next week.

  1. Hey guys i could have sworn i saw that baskett was cut to make room for garcia?

  2. Ed L, hope you are right, once again, why would the Jets not just wait for this guy to get cut rather than giving up a pick? In the long run you hurt your team giving up picks for other team’s cuts.

    SAVE THE DRAFTPICKS!

  3. Repost from last night it’s so good it should have it’s own thread

FOUND IT!!!!!!!! Video of Jenkins knocking over the center

  4. sixth rounder. And a half eaten ham sandwich.

  5. if he gets cut, the jets have to get in line. if they really want him, they’ll give up a low pick. if he does become a jet, who do we release?

  6. Giants need a receiver too so maybe the Eagles will orchestrate a trade for a very low pick just to keep him out of the division.

  7. if we do get baskett i think one of the cb will get cut, most likely coleman

  8. Hank and his babe want to come to NY, it is a very attractive proposition with a chance for playing time, something no one else can guarantee.

And they have the Eagles connection with Cohen.

Patience is a virtue, but are the Eagles really THAT good that we want a guy they cut in the second week of the season?

They cant seem to get Clowney on the field as it is, but hen again, if it gets Brad Smith off the field I am all for it.

  9. i”d release coleman even if we don’t get baskett.

  10. Can we please sign him so we get more Kendra exposure?

  11. Off Topic but how sweet were the Bills and Pats Uni’s last night all AFC Teams should have to were those old uni’s for the whole season and not just for 1 or 2 games.

  12. Unis would’ve been better if the Pats lost in them.

  13. Totally off topic but I can watch this all day.

    Kris Jenkins disposing of Myers.

  14. With all that speed Clowney has problem pushing off and getting open thats why hes not on the field that much, i rather have Hank and his height .

  15. Wise Old Jet Fan,

“but then again, if it gets Brad Smith off the field I am all for it.” Amen brother, Amen. Smith is horrible. He makes special teams plays, but I feel like the plays he makes could be made by a lot of other guys. Baskett has legit WR talent so lets give him a looksie.

  16. jets throwback unis should be the first season in green and white, after the name change. i believe that they had a jet on the side of the helmet. the titan unis are a joke. wrong colors, wrong name.

  17. We can’t wait for them to cut Baskett, because I think I read somewhere that they would cut Reggie Brown instead. The only reason they are shopping Baskett is because they know he has value to another team, and nobody would trade for Reggie Brown. I think this would be a solid move if we could get him on the cheap, like a 5th or 6th.

  18. They will have to cut him. i do not want to give up any picks for a underachieving WR with a ego and skanky girlfriend controlling his career.

  19. ^ Kendra’s a saint.

  20. Sorry guys, but Baskett is no panacea. He can play, but the team only benefits from a firsy quality WR; something that Baskett is not.

  21. If the Eagles need a roster spot, I’m sure there’s someone less valuable they can cut. There’s likely a market for a big receiver with experience like Baskett. I can’t see the Jets outbidding everyone who needs a WR and they probably shouldn’t.

  22. Us and the giants are the only teams in desperate need. Stuckey looked great and so did Cotch, this guy may be a great number 3, with clowney at #4 (or 3) and wallace wright bringing up the rear. NO MORE BRAD SMITH. He had many chances to prove his worth, but hes utterly useless. Forget the wildcat.

  23. Kendra is knocked up…that should play a role in this decision.

How is Brad Smith still getting playing time? Has he ever cleanly caught a ball for us?

I hope Bart Scott “Blinka’s” Randy Moss.

  24. The Eagles put Andrews on IR, so that’s the roster move, I believe. Unless they sign another OT (Runyan, maybe), they won’t need to make another roster move until Vick comes back.

  25. Lets stand pat this year, we have enough talent to compete with any team in the league. From what I saw this weekend Miami and N.E. are not the powerhouse’s everyone imagined. Miami got it taken to them and the Bills snatched a loss from the jaws of victory with N.E.

  26. i know it’s off topic, but to John sec 125:

Yes, i love that 1963 NY Jets logo and look.. agreed 100%… Maybe in 2013, they’ll look to market those uni’s for a 50 year anniversary of the team being called the “Jets”..

As for Baskett, i can take him or leave him at this point.. If he can cover on special teams, maybe drop Wallace Wright, and get him in the wr rotation…

  27. Must the Jets add a WR? I think it would be much more exciting to watch the current players on the roster. Between Cotch, Stuck and Clown, the Jets have plenty of options; particularly with Keller and Leon also catching balls.

Why upset the team chemistry with a new player who isn’t familiar with the system and wasn’t present for Ryan’s Cortland “lock-in” this summer?

  28. One other thing, last time I checked Baskett wasn’t doing that much on the Eagles.

  29. this guy sucks. he is worse than mcdrops. i dont know why we would be interested

  30. I like the move if we can get it done…Hes sure as hell better than Brad Smith purely based on his size. Its tough to cover guys like him regardless if hes considered an elite receiver. He might not be doing much for the Eagles but Brad Smith has never done much for the Jets. Replacing him with Baskett sounds like a plan to me.

  31. i agree brad smith is useless on offense but he is a stud on specials.

  32. i would like somebody better than baskett and wouldnt want to give alot for him but if clowney is gonna be a no show everyweek maybe we should consider him…plus i dont think the giants are that interested in him i think mannigham is gonna step up for them and i think they know that too…i wanted mannigham that year and knew mangini wasnt gonna take him cause of his character issues

  33. ESPN just said that the Iggles put Shawn Andrews on IR, creating a roster spot for Garcia. So, while Philthy might still try to move Baskett, they’re under less pressure to do so.

  34. I dont think we need him but if he’s on the cheap – like 6th rounder cheap than bring him in

  35. Didn’t everyone see those NFL promo commercials during the game this weekend? That was Hank Baskett in slow motion dropping a TD pass in the end zone. I don’t think he’s an upgrade over our current receivers and I’d rather see Clowney/Wright/Smith develop……….. plus they are already part of the great team chemistry we’re seeing.

  36. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/12211253

Baskett is not coming. See link.

  37. Wow Garcia wound up back in Phily…. Never understood why they let him go in the first place. Not that it mattered but the fans always loved him.

  38. I don’t want that Baskett case.

  39. Brad Smith is an awesome special teams player, ran a reverse for a first down and made a few nice blocks on Sunday. I’m not sure how much more we can realistically expect from the #4 WR.

  40. Virtually all wide receivers are psychos. The Jets are just lucky that our guys are sane> Look at TO, Moss(now calm), Ocho, BM. All the good ones have massive head problems. remember Keyshawn? IF we can get a big, tough WR, of course it will help us. The Eagles are stacked at WR so it’s difficult to know how good BAskett is. IF he’s cheap, I say we go for it.

  41. It’s been one week everyone. Once the league studies the film Sanchez will find it harder to get the ball to the outside with Brad Smith as their #3. Clowney is a stretch WR who is more suited as the 4 than 3. You bring in Baskett and have him work his way into the reps slowly. So you still have Stuckey and Cotch starting.

This WR corp had a nice first game. But do any of you fear what would happen if Stuckey or (god forbid) Cotch go down for any extended time? No depth at WR is actually scarier than the lack of experience the starters have.

  42. D — the IR move was to bring in Garcia. A week from today they will activate Vick and likely release a WR. So they’d rather trade him now and activate an extra lineman for a week than wait and maybe get nothing.

  43. Eagles were trying to trade Brown or Baskett. Given the number of picks that we’ve used lately to move around in draft, I think we need to keep all that we have. If we can get one of these guys for free (Brown has the better stats, but Mr. Kendra is taller), I’d give it a shot, but I wouldn’t use a pick (even 7th rounder) for either of them. We need the draft to rebuild depth.

I know no one can cover the Clown, so why couldn’t Franchez find the Clown?

  44. NYC Parking Expert –

His play on specials is just as much a part of the system as it is his talent. Fast guys are a dime a dozen, and that’s what he uses on specials (his speed). As for the reverse, he might as well have “Gadget Play” as his name on the back of his jersey. Whenever he’s in the game the other team either expects him to do something tricky, or nothing at all. For a 3rd receiver (and he is the 3rd WR, not the 4th), we expect more than…zero catches? really? zero? The guy is a horrible WR, flat out. At least Wallace Wright knows how to play WR. We can use Wright and Carrol for our special teams gunners, and give Smith’s roster spot to someone who can actually benefit this team.

  45. nice thinking greg.

  46. Baskett is not worth a draft pick, regardless if it is a 7th or not.
The Pats have 7 picks in the first 2 rounds in the next 2 drafts!
We give them away like they are government bailouts.

If Baskett had any game he would be playing for Philly, he could not get on the field w/ minimum competition, why would we want him?

  47. Baskett is fine young man even though he took one of my women

  48. Let the Eagles cut him, and then, maybe, fish on waivers. But he’s not worth trading for and I agree with those that say Brad Smith is an important member of the team. Must be in almost half the plays, when you count special formations, and special teams. Plays hard, and with enthusiasm. Worth more than a head case. With Leon, he adds a component to the Jets offense, which may lack a lights out WR, but which has a lot of variety and must be hard to plan against.

  49. Per profootballtalk.com Baskett has been cut and Vick has been activated.

  50. Brendan –

Couldn’t agree more that his zero catches are disappointing. Couldn’t disagree more that fast special teams guys are a dime a dozen (if so, why did we sign Izzo) or that he should have “gadget play” on his back. If it is so obvious that he would run a gadget play, why did it work so well? He was actually in on a bunch of plays and yes it sucks that he had no catches, but he did have some really good blocks that extended plays, which is critical for a WR. Also not sure if I agree that he is the 3rd and not 4th WR – that corps is so fluid, it’s could be either one. I’m not against upgrading the position, but not sure that the Philly castoff is any better just because he is taller. Marcus Henry is taller, too. But I see why Smith aggravates you, I guess I just appreciate some of the other aspects of his game more than you do.

  51. from Cimini’s blog:

“There is a lot of speculation out there about WR Hank Baskett being traded or released by the Eagles. Naturally, the Jets are being linked to Baskett, because they’re linked to seemingly every available veteran receiver, but I’m told the Jets have no interest in the 6-4 pass catcher.”

  52. NYCPE-

He is most certainly the #3. Now, is he the 3rd receiving option for the team? GOD no. But he is the 3rd WR on the depth chart. Clowney didn’t get any burn, while Smith played the majority of the game.

Smith and Izzo play different ST positions. Smith is a gunner. His speed is his asset. He gets to the ball first and is supposed to (ideally) make a play, but if not, at least funnel the return man towards help/the sideline.

His main purpose is the wildcat and trick plays, so I think the “gadget play” line most certainly applies. When he is in on a normal play, it’s usually as a decoy. You don’t sign a WR for his blocking. You expect him to be able to block, but that’s not why you pick one up. And with one of the best WR coaches in the NFL, I’m willing to bet whoever we put out there is going to block (Clowney got a lot of praise in this department in preseason).

He isn’t even the best specials guy (at his position) on the team. He might be 3rd best behind Wright and Carrol. He is not that valuable to this team and I would cut him and let Clowney get reps, see what we have there, and he won’t be that difficult to replace on specials.

  53. I definitely think we should get on this, hes definitely an upgrade over Smith. Smith does have his value in things other than receiving, but in terms of the WR position, Baskett is better than Smith.

  54. As per Rich Cimini, Hank Baskett has been released by the Eagles.

  55. Brendan – agree to disagree, that’s cool.

  56. We should go after Matt Jones

  57. am I the only one who thinks Wallace Wright should move to safety? Let me put it like this:

Awesome tackles I’ve seen him make on teams: 1,000,000
Awesome catches made as WR: 0

He’s big, fast, and he hits. He has a nose for the ball and ostensibly knows the passing game.

    Move him to S.

  58. Just curious how come Jack simmons is on the practice squad when Branden Renkart who orgiinally made the team is a free agent
