Although it’s a harsh reality, Bob Raissman of the Daily News reminds us that for all the zeitgeist right now around the Jets and their impressive Week One victory, there’s still a lot of work to do.

Still, there’s another side to all this. On CBS, in the fourth quarter as the euphoria began boiling, Phil Simms lowered the flame. With the Jets up 24-7, he advised viewers to “be careful” and not invest too much emotion (don’t “overjudge)” in a Week 1 result.

“I always heard after the first victory of the year, well, let’s find out if we’re one-week wonders. We’ve said a lot of wonderful things about the Jets because they’ve played great today,” Simms said. “But it’s a long, tough season. There’s definitely going to be some down periods. How will they play then?”

Simms reminded the audience that after the first two weeks of the ’08 season the bandwagon was full of people convinced “the Cowboys were going to go undefeated.” So, on Sunday, Simms was not raining on the Jets’ parade, just sprinkling some reality over the festivities.

Was the win euphoric, somewhat unexpected, rather impressive? Yes! Yes! It was all those things, but after seven months of no meaningful football games, it’s common to get a tad hyperbolic after seeing just one week of football. It’s time to see how this trends over the next couple of weeks. I don’t want anyone rolling out their Jump to Conclusions Mat on the Jets just yet.

Phil Simms is an ex-GIant and will always love to crap on the Jets…The Jets never get the national air time like the Giants and Bills..But they will after this season when they come to realize this JET team is for real…Time to make the move and aquire Hank Baskett.6’4, 220, 4.5 speed with great leaping ability…A go to guy we can use in the red zone and over the middle..Make the move Tanny now before the opportunity slips past us…

Phil Simms has always done a great job of being impartial and unlike most of the announcers he doesn’t mention his former team and show some bias. I agree with Simms, the win was great it was exciting but it is week 1 of a long season. There is no reason not to be optimistic but getting carried away especially with the lucky Patriots and Tom Brady next on the schedule is just stupid. The Jets may win this week against the Belichickens but it won’t be anything like the domination of the Texans. As for Hank Baskett if the Eagles don’t ask for much it’s worth a shot but I wouldn’t go crazy for this guy

Everything screams for us fans to temper the emotional wave from the first week. The Jets blowout a good Houston offense with Chez playing well….the Patriots struggle and look mediocre against a average Buffalo team but……

What Phil Simms forgot to mention was that Rex Ryan and the players have been calling what happened against the Texans for 4 months now. A smashmouth nasty defense that only gets stronger…a poised young QB and running game that can pick apart opposing defenses.

I went into Sunday’s game with an open mind. A house money season hoping for Chez to play “ok” That all chnaged after the first B Scott hit off the edge. Win this week and it skies the limit for our season

I have allowed my meter to go from totally pessimistic, to cautiously optimistic to mostly optimistic in the last month. Why not?

The probably will not make the playoffs this year, but at least they will be fun to watch as they try to overcome the odds.

This Sunday will tell us a lot. The Pats sure looked beatable last night.

It seems, that as a franchise, we’re pointed in the right direction. A young talented QB, a firey head coach and an aggressive defense. Very encouraging.

I tend to agree with Simms. As a fan I sometimes tend to give too much credence to one game. It is my nature to get excited and hopeful when the Jets play well. In the same way that last night I was thinking that there is no way the Pats can beat us. Yes the Jets played great last week and the Pats look sloppy and beatable. They were sloppy but remember they won. Next week is a new game and both teams have to proof again what kind of team they are. The thing is the Jets showed a lot of potential let’s cheer them on see the new era develop.

One assumption I think it is safe to jump to:
Win or lose, this year’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

After all, that’s all any of us can ever really hope for with a team we love.

Be competitive, care, fight, have fun, make me care, and hopefully, be in the mix when the music stops.

Sunday was a ball to watch. How exciting can Sunday’s game be?

    J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

Phil is right, one game does not make a season, but it sure looks promising.

i’m glad that Phil said this. because, in past seasons, the jets have performed at their best when someone doubts them. i think coach Ryan will use a comment like this to further fire up the team.

    he’s right, but….

this board looked at the schedule and many of us, especially me, were hoping and thought it key to come out 2-2 in the first 4 to really compete in the conference.
chances of that look alot better now.

to paraphrase a classic denny green, not expecting anyone to crown our *ss.

I agree with mike-t, this will be a fun season, just like Parcells’ ’97, but with a better team. This defense will be like Buddy’s 46…sure, it could be beaten by Montana, Rice, Craig and the 49ers awesome offensive line, but when Buddy’s defense worked, all the offensive plays were in front of the defense and you could guarantee punishing hits by defenders with a head of steam. Some teams just won’t have the players or QB to withstand the onslaught (like the Texans), others will be able to score, but it will have to be slow and methodical with a lot of quick underneath passes.

In short, this defense will keep the Jets in games. So, then we have the second thing to enjoy: a 22-year old QB with all the necessary gifts (except a little more height) mature. Like I said before the season, the Jets only need Sanchez and the offense to be average. After one game, it’s tough to conclude how well the offense will play, but there’s no doubt in my mind that the defense will get better once Pace joins. Let’s enjoy opposing teams, whether they win or lose, get knocked down and bloody.

I like Simms, but don’t need him to tell me there are still 15 games left and not to get too hyped. Instead, I say enjoy the moment, don’t expect the same every week (but hope for it) and root for them to kick ass the next week.

The Pats are a good team but very beatable when you limit mistakes. Last year in Foxboro we buried them in the 1st half when we played physical football and then let them tie it up in the 2nd half when Mangini played “not to lose.” I now Brady was out last year, but that is their pattern. The Pats came back last night when the Bills played prevent. After that the Pats became aggressive and it was only a matter of time before they forced a strip, fumble or interception.

Bottom line is let Rex be Rex and smash them in the mouth until the clock reads 0:00 and we will win/ Bet on it.

Well I am over excited and I dont care. If and when the tide turns I will deal with it then. For now everyone at work and elsewhere will know about the JETS. It is not every year I get to do this.So I take it when I can.
