In case you missed it, starting ILB Jerod Mayo was injured in the Patriots Bills game last night.
New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo didn’t return after injuring his right knee in the first quarter of their 25-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.
Mayo, the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, was hurt after tackling running back Fred Jackson at the end of a 16-yard run.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he had no update on Mayo’s condition.
That said, the Globe is reporting that it might not be as bad as it seems.
The initial belief, however, is that the injury is not as serious as the season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear quarterback Tom Brady suffered in last year’s season opener. More definitive word on Mayo’s status may come today. In Mayo’s absence, Gary Guyton and Adalius Thomas manned the middle with mixed results.
No slight to Chris Gasper, but this is the Patriots. Just like Mangini did, they’ll get whatever out there that they want out there and keep the rest veiled in mystery.
Patriots fans love Mayo as much as we love David Harris. This will be something to track this week, for sure. Mayo is becoming a leader of this defense in just his second year, and as much as it hurt the Jets to be without David Harris for a few games last season, that could be what it feels like for the Pats to go without Mayo during this season. Stay tuned on this one.

This is just a staunch reminder of how fragile a season can be.
A player hurt here, someone suspended, dings and cuts and bruises.
I hope he doesn’t play too but more than that I hope the Jets stay healthy.
Off topic, I just read that Trusnik also got a game ball for special teams. Can someone confirm that makes 3 for the game: 1 to Woody, 1 to TJ, 1 to Trusnik?

Oh and I think Pozluzny in Buffalo was injured too…

RKNYC-
It seems to be a slightly different system under Ryan. The game ball he gave to Wody was given to him by the team right after the game.
Rex said he gave game balls to Thomas Jones and Sanchez on O, Reeves and Harris (I think) on D and Trusnick for special teams after watching the films on Monday.

The Pats still have the luxury of shifting Adalius Thomas to the middle and putting Burgess on the outside, but I still like the Jets’ chances.
-
Thanks Jack. That is quite a few game balls. We aren’t including the one to Sanchez’ mom.

“as much as it hurt the Jets to be without David Harris for a few games last season, that could be what it feels like for the Pats to go without Mayo during this season”
I know your point but the Jets were 5-1 in the six games Harris was injured (including wins at NE and Tenn) and then 1-3 after he returned.

injuries never seem to affect that team. it’s like they have some kind of divine intervention or something ( see last night’s game ). i hope the winds of change are blowing. i am sick and tired of that whole organization. go rex!

dont really know and dont want to jump to conclusions but if there comparing it to Brady’s and saying its not that serious. Then he’s talking about length of time and not extent of injury. Yeah in laments terms he’s out for 2-4 weeks.

BIG injury, if Mayo is out for any extended time, let there be no doubt about it, this D is built around players like Mayo: High motor and football smarts to go with it. Let’s face it, the Pats D is pretty average at best, and losing Mayo won’t help at all
-
I love it! Awesome..I dont think these Pats realize whats about to happen to them next Sunday
-
Comparing it to Brady’s injury is not a good sign for Mayo. Interesting they are comparing to the Brady injury.

Without Mayo, Guyton will be the MLB in a 4-3. Thomas will likely be on the strong (left) side, but will move around. The other OLB will either be Pierre Woods or Rob Nincovich. The 4 down lineman will be rotated with Warren (LDE) and Wilfork (DT) with Green (DT) and Banta-Cain (RDE). Burgess will also come in and the Pats will have a tough front 4, but if you can get by them (and, IMO, Banta-Cain and Green can be manhandled in the running game), then the Pats much weaker back 7 can be exposed. Mayo’s a big loss because he is a second LB to worry about, besides Thomas. With him out, a second-level threat like Leon could wreak havoc. Also, if the Jets can run, the play action can be set up…maybe we see the Clown? Also, I hope the Jets watched how the hurry up worked. Without Mayo, the Pats will rely a lot more on situational substitutions, potentially exposing them to a power rush game if Wilfork is taken out for a breather. BB is a genius, but without Mayo, the Pats D lacks playmakers besides Thomas, who can be avoided.

Damn sack99—-you do know football.
-
Astute analysis Sack99 – one of the big differences will be the quality of the O-Line the Pats go up against. I can’t believe they let the Bills line off the hook like they did (kind of like I can’t believe the Texans didn’t make life more uncomfortable for a rookie QB, in his first game…away!) – or they were just outplayed, maybe?
One thing the Pats had to respect was T.O., and it seemed like the Bills were clearing out the space between the DB’s and the line, then filling it with the RB and O-linemen.
I wonder if the same respect will be given to the Jets receivers? If not, will the “short-to-build-confidence” game plan exhibited against the Texans be abandoned for something a little riskier (with bigger dividends, of course). We’ll see, I suppose!

i hope mayo aint hurt i think the jets have a good chance against the pats when they are at 100% so i want no excuses if we win…after watchin last nights game they dont look unstoppable like they did 2 years ago but it was only one game
-
damm sackdance you got it figured out
-
In light of the fine Goodell will give the Jets for not listing Farve on last year’s injury report, I’m sure Bill B will be totally honest with Mayo’s injury status so we’ll all know exactly what his injury is. After all, Goodell wouldn’t want other teams to think NFL rules don’t have to be followed. Ha!

rusty…we are playing without calvin pace, so if mayo is out, i dont think they could use that as an excuse
mayo is the defensive play caller and the pats best defender. it would be huge to have him out, and they are on a short week, so any changes in the play calling would have less time to be implemented
IMO, the 2 player on pats D that i worry about are wilfork and mayo. mangold has shown the ability to handle wilfork in the past. if mayo is out, i really like our chances…

Well it would be nice if he could be out for this game
