Dwight Lowery Talks To Himself

by Corey Griffin on September 26th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

It’s interesting to hear the ways athletes psyche themselves up. Some, like Jaguars DT John Henderson, want other people to hit them. Some, like Chad Ocho Cinco, like to talk trash. And some, are just plain nuts.

Jets defensive back Dwight Lowery? He likes to tell himself how he’s going to do.

Dwight Lowery was chatting with Dwight Lowery, pumping up Dwight Lowery and giving Dwight Lowery a pep talk that proved to make all the difference.

“Self talk is something that’s very underrated for an athlete,” said Lowery, who will start for the injured Sheppard Sunday against the Tennessee Titans at the Meadowlands. “We talk to ourselves all the time throughout the course of a game or practice. That voice that’s doing the talking in your head has a profound influence on how you’re going to play and approach things.”

Watch Lowery play for a game and it’s obvious that he has a ton of talent. The first half of last season was proof enough of that. He also played a very good game last week filling in against New England. As the season moves forward, Lowery will be intensely important.  Both Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland have proven to be injury prone in the past and CB is one of the spots where the Jets have solid depth, but if Lowery, and for that matter Drew Coleman, don’t step up with the two starters out, teams will shy away from running the ball against the Jets and try to attack them through the air the way they did last year.

Lowery had one of the key plays against the Pats last week–the pass he broke up on fourth down at the end of the game. It was great coverage on a near perfect pass, and it effectively ended the game.

    Off subject….

I just got back from vacation. I saw the big win on Sunday (which was sweet) but besides that have not gotten much news since last week.

Any new news on the tampering chanrges by SF? Can this even be proves?

I come home and there is Jet news everywhere….Bart Scott punking Moss for putting Revis down…..some nobody FB getting crazy mouthy with Scott. Tampering charges? Strickland/Lito hurt?

    I missed a big week

Hey Lowery, please tell Lowery to have a big game Sunday to give 2 better CBs a rest.

I think Lowery has more potential and worth playing more then any player they brought in to replace him. He’s better at playing the ball, and coming up with a int or a pass defense then either stickland, or shepard….. and he can get just as many illegal contact penalties as lito shepard. that was the big things that hurt lowery his first year, penalties.

Everything in life has it’s disadvantages.

The brillant and equally fascinating Ryan/Pettine defensive system has one… It always puts a lot of miles on it’s cornerbacks.

So we probably will need 8 starting cornerbakcs each year.

Concerning Mr. Lowery’s head conversations…this is nothing new in the world of achievement. We do what we think we can do over the long haul, and we are what we do. The cycle will go on, so influencing it from the point of view of internal dialogue is incredibly important. In my field as a classical musician,I can tell you that it is critical not only during performance, but during practice as well.

johnl – As the 4th WR he isn’t getting many reps. He said on twitter that he is a bit frustrated, but happy they are winning and planning to continue working hard to wait for his chance. Brad Smith hasn’t done much as the number 3 (albeit that his reps have been fairly limited too, as Keller has been out wide a lot), so maybe Clowney is close to overtaking him.

Even as the number four, I’m sure they’ll look for him deep in one of the games soon and if it comes off, they’ll keep going back to the well.
