Audible: What is This Team?

by Bassett on September 28th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Although the game had some up and down moments, I was shocked to see the Jets handle the Titans so well. This got me to thinking … exactly what kind of a team is this that the Jets have here?

  • A young QB, who although has hit some bumps (fumble issues) is still on a 2:1 TD to INT ratio so far.
  • A receiving corps that plays very well after the catch and seems to be working well with their QB
  • A dynamic Tight End that can act as an additional receiver with decent effect
  • A commitment to the running game (although it’s not looked dominant so far)
  • A dynamic running back who can play in multiple parts of this offense
  • One of the league’s very best special teams units
  • A top defensive line that can two gap and penetrate equally effectively, and is versatile to switch in and out of 3-4
  • A unit still playing without Calvin Pace, the team’s best pass rusher in 2008
  • One of the top three CBs in the league in Darrelle Revis
  • A unit that can grind on defense or play spread em out football fairly equally
  • A unit that brings tons of pressure on QBs and forces them into some early throws and/or bad decisions
  • Fair depth at most spots on defense

Knowing some of that, you tell me what type of a team this is.

well coached, talented, and hungry. there will be bumps, but right now they are winning games that they would have lost in the past. that is a GREAT sign.

  2. avatar ramble914 says:

    A playoff contender!

  3. avatar droseatwork says:

they are who we thought they are!!!

  4. avatar mole57 says:

A six-and-a-half point underdog to the Saints. I love the lack of respect.

  5. avatar m eazii says:

i am definitely excited for the rest of the season…we will make the playoffs…wut gets me excited is that in each of the three games we had 1 unit our of the 3(offense,defense, and special teams) step up and make plays! and i kno we r still not playing to the best we can and at our fullest potential! this is scary! i cant wait to see a game wen all 3 units r playing excellent!! we r a force to be reckoned with!

  6. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

A team destined to break my heart?

    or (I prefer this one)

A hungry, strong , division winning team.

  7. avatar jkjet64 says:

They are definitely not the same old jets. Quick question for anyone out there. Where’s Gholston? Did I miss something??

  8. avatar CautiouslyOptimistic says:

As long as Sanchez remains as composed as he has been so far, this team can win consistently with this kind of offensive output.

This defense looks like it’s perfectly capable of carrying this team until the offense hits its stride, let’s just hope they don’t wear down too soon.

And to anyone saying VG is invisible, I saw him pressuring the QB on a couple of occasions yesterday. It’s hard to stand out when you’re worked in on a rotational basis. From what I saw yesterday against Tennessee, I think Gholston is gonna be a nightmare for opposing RIGHT TACKLES if he continues to progress the way he has. We all know he’s supposed to be fast and strong, but the few times I saw him he LOOKED fast and strong. I’m just saying that I’m seeing progress. I mean Osi Umeniyora and Leonard Little both took their time before producing.

    I’m just saying…..

  9. avatar jkjet64 says:

Wasn’t critisizing about Gholston. Didn’t see him in the New England game or he didn’t have a tackle and don’t remember seeing him yesterday. I just looked it up and he had 3 tackles. I have to lay off of so much beer when I watch the Jets play. Just habit I guess. lol

  10. avatar Green Lantern says:

Gholston barely played in the NE game and when he did he was playing DE and a 3-4 DE already barely gets any recognition. Next week we will barely see Gholston again because we will need more DB’s.
Its kinda funny the things we were worried about aren’t an issue and the things we weren’t are the issue..

  11. avatar david i says:

All good stuff, with more upside to go as the Jets are still a team in transition. They still need to demonstrate that they can run the ball when they need to and want to run the ball. They also need to demonstrate that they have WRs that can get seperation sooner, as protection will not always allow the time for WR to get open. They are team that realized Gholston’s hand needs to be on the ground in order for him to have his best shot at developing. They are a team that has yet demonstrate the third head of the three headed RB monster. We did learn that we do have depth and a coaching staff that knows how to game plan properly, as yesterday’s plan was significantly different that New England’s. We still have upside…significant upside.

  12. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Bassett, one important characteristic that you and those posting above me have apparently missed is Rex Ryan’s Jets are a team that appears able to make do with the players who are healthy and appropriate to play against the opponent they face.

I dare anyone to say they expected the Jets to have to play both Lowery and Drew Coleman for an entire game and not suffer for it.

VG, Westerman, an extra DB, or even an extra DL (we played a lot of 4 man fronts versus the Titans) have made up for Pace’s absence.

Our WR rotate early and often. Somehow the guys playing have done the job. Tony R has lined up at WR.

While I think some players are essential (Revis, Leon, Bart), we are 3-0 in spite of relying on have Lowery, Drew, Eric Smith, Hartsock, etc.

That is a true tribute to this CS and GM.

    harlan

  13. avatar m eazii says:

yea i agree…gholston has been making progress and has been gettin sum pressure on the opposing qb…i am satisfied with that knowing that he was in manginis dog house last year and barely got any reps…i am happy he is progressing and thats all we can say as of right now…hopefully he will get to a point where he is an impact on our defense and makes a play or 2! J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!

  14. avatar Bent says:

Yes, Harlan – and that was a staple of his defenses over the last few years. Hopefully, they’ll be back at full strength soon though, because you can only stretch things so far.

Gholston? Got a ton of playing time (maybe a career high) and was sometimes strongside, sometimes weakside, I think he even lined up at nose a few times and he certainly had plays when he had his hand down and others when he approached the edge standing up. I also saw him dropping into coverage on some plays, including the final defensive snap of the game where the Jets ran a firezone and he and another player initially blitzed, then dropped off to cover the underneath routes (Collins went downfield anyway). Regardless of how well he played, your interpretation of which will depend on your expectations, it was interesting to see (a) Ryan use him in a variety of ways and (b) him seeming to cope with all of it.

I might re-watch the game and break this all down in a post for the front page.

  15. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Tell B-Schott tolook at the Indy game film. They find 100 ways to get Dallas Clark the ball. We will need Keller to get more involved if we have to score with NO.

    I love this team

  16. avatar jkjet64 says:

Sorry Guys! I had company over and it was one of those things I asked myself after the fact. Just didn’t remember seeing him although wasn’t scouring the field for him. Saw tons of Jenks and Harris and the crew. I really do need to watch my Beer consumption I guess.

  17. avatar simplysimon2 says:

I believe I saw The Ghost make the TD saving tackle on Johnson’s longest run. Tenn moving left to right, Vern got caught inside on the rush, continued pursuit and brought Johnson down. And another play, a force out by the sidelines going in the opposite direction. The TV crew went to another game highlight without analyzing and replaying either play. I had to watch on a small screen at a sports bar so I can’t swear on my Mother’s grave but that’s what I thought I saw. Anyone else?

  18. avatar jkjet64 says:

BTW. I lived in Jersey for 40yrs. I am out in Phoenix now so the games start at 10:00 a.m. So when you are barely awake and have your first beer at 10:30 for breakfast, that could be the excuse. I’m going with that!! lol

  19. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

jkjet64 what part of phoenix do you live in I am out on the West side in Surprise, if you ever want to catch a game at the bar let me know, it is hard being the only Jet fan at the bar every week…………

  20. avatar jkjet64 says:

Hey JEFFDOLINI. I am in Gilbert. I have the sunday ticket if you want to get together. Are you the one who has JETSFAN as a license plate? I had to go with JETZFAN so I know there is another jet fan out here. haha

  21. avatar Merc20 says:

I bet if we go to the Super Bowl and win by 1pt people will still be on here asking where was VG and why we didn’t pick up Matt Jones.

  22. avatar jkjet64 says:

    @ Merc20

Not sure what you mean by that but if you had read my other posts, I just didn’t remember seeing him and was just wondering.

  23. avatar Brabble says:

I think I know! From your hints it would appear to be that you are describing a football team. Am I right?!

  24. avatar rusty sanchez says:

a team who is gonna make drew brees look like brooks bollinger

  25. avatar Merc20 says:

Nah, just been brewing in me from reading other blogs. People are understandably hard on him so even when he does contribute he still gets p*ssed on. Wasn’t commenting on any one post, just when the team is off to such a good start, I feel there’s too many that find little things to pick on. I’m an optimist so it grates on me after a while and I end up blurting things out :-)

  26. avatar Led says:

The team is shaping up to be a true TEAM, with everybody pulling in the same direction and going all out.

Just saw in today’s presser that Ryan deactivated Clowney this week as a disciplinary measure and to light a fire under his ass. It sounds like Clowney responded the right way, giving a great effort in practice. I’d look for Clowney to finally make an impact this week as the coaches look to get him involved. He’s got too much talent not to produce. Developing another consistent downfield threat will be important to getting the running game going.

  27. avatar jkjet64 says:

    @ Merc20

I hear you. I’ve been a jets fan for 37 yrs but I can’t help being a pecimist. But I have nothing to pick on the jets about. I beleive usually by this time in any given year, I start looking forward to next years draft. LOL

  28. avatar Matt M says:

The young QB will continue to have his bumps and bruises. He probably has not played his worst game of the season yet, but he almost certainly hasn’t played his best game either.

Don’t give up on the ground game. We have an elite O-line and competent RBs. We’ve been going against tough run defenses who all but knew we were going to run on almost every first down, especially early. As they let Sanchez play a little more, the run game will open up with the air attack.

To me this team is, Kris Jenkins. Whenever this monster is on the field, he’s three yards into the backfield blowing up every play. We seem to only ever give up a big play when he’s getting a breather. I believe this team will go as far as Jenkins’s health takes us. If he gets hurt like last season, the defense will revert to being merely good in a hurry. If he stays in top form all year, an elite defense with an OK offense can go…far, indeed.

  29. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

No but I know what you mean, I work down at the Motor Vehicles and I tried to get a few different plates and they were all taken. I still like going to bars and talking crap to Patriot fans, but they have all vanished from our state, I love it! It is tough being a Jets fan, we have had alot of good early starts to the season only to knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, it hurts, my wife knows to leave me alone on losing Sundays…………..

  30. avatar Merc20 says:

    @Jkjet,

24 years here and have never been happier. Glad we finally have something brewing, and honestly doing it so far without going through a major rebuild is even better.

As for the Saints game, I think they are going to go back to the Texans game plan and just try to bully them and take the QBs will/desire to hold the ball away.

    Go Jets!

  31. avatar jkjet64 says:

    @ jeffdolini

Well if you want to meet sometime, let me know. jk64_99@yahoo

  32. avatar Andrew Weiss says:

Unfortunately, the only play I noticed Gholston in while watching the tape was the thirty yard scamper by Chris Johnson in the fourth quarter. Gholston let the RB get around the edge. I assume his assignment was to contain the play inside, which he failed to do. He did, however, run the play down from behind and make the tackle. I’d be interested in your analysis, Bent.

  33. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

    Led,

Good call on Clowney, during the MNF pregame show Mort just told the story that Rex was not happy with his tweet.

  34. avatar greene says:

you forgot the most important thing. SWAGGER

  35. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

As long as Rex stays true to Rex we’re an exciting team that will win our division and play havoc in the playoffs . He’s brought too many changes to enumerate here, however one of the biggest was to mothball the Prevent Defense Think about it. We probably would have lost both the Pats and Titans games if we had laid back in the Prevent Defense instead of blitzing Brady and Collins in the 4th Quarter. No QB wants to take a beating and risk a career ending injury by taking more shots then necessary. The fourth quarter will remain ours as long as we stay aggressive.

Two quickies on Sanchez: love the kid but he should practice with wet soapy footballs (like Ray Lucas said Parcells used to make him do) to get used t playing in rain and snow. Also, noticed he was catching some of his own warm up tosses before the game which is risky. Don;t want a jammed finger. He should have someone catching the ball for him.

Let’s beat the Saints and put all the “experts” who said we’d start 0-4 or 0-5 to shame. Go Jets!

  36. avatar rusty sanchez says:

frustradedjetfan i guess you were watching the post game on sny but he was right because not only the sanchez fumble but it seemed like 2 or 3 passes wobbled out of his hand…must say there was good coverage yesterday by the jets it was just collins having best qtr of his career

  37. avatar GANGGREEN says:

My comment to what type of team is this is exactly that THEY ARE A TEAM.They have each others backs on every play, the trust their teammates to make plays, the offense and defense support one another even when times are tough, they play with passion, enthusiasm, and pride. And last but most important we are now Mangeniusless and more freedom to the players to make decisions, better communication on the field, and true leadership from their head coach and captains on the field.Once again these Jet players play as a TEAM and are winning for that reason…

  38. avatar nyjets90 says:

this is a great football team that is actually getting stronger every game. the best part of this is, is that we can expect this type of play from our boys for years to come. things are looking very fortunate for Gang Green.

  39. avatar Brett B says:

This team is the team that I’ve been waiting for…

A team that can play conservative offensively for a majority of the game; pound the ball on the ground and then open up the field with greatly executed pass plays.

An aggressive, but SMART defense that will play hard whistle to whistle, and do a great job on not giving up a big play. They tackle well and they are backing up the smack talk.

The defense has allowed only 4.2 yards/play…STINGY!!

The special teams guys are playing hard and that’s all you can ask for from those guys. Great coverage on punts, and big hits on the kickoffs…

Mark Sanchez is spreading the ball well (4 td’s to 4 diff players) and I like, no..LOVE his attitude, and the way he is out on the field to high five guys after the PAT.

my projections for the season are 11-5 and HOPEFULLY making an appearance in the AFC Championship game…LETS GO JETS

  40. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

You are what your record says you are.

They are undefeated vs. three teams projected as playoff contenders.

Historically teams that start 3-0 have made the playoffs 75% of the time so they are certainly contenders, especially with some of the tougher games on paper behind them and tie breaker advantage vs. TN and HOU.

They are imperfect, for sure, but who is perfect? You could argue only the Ravens are close in the AFC, so far.

    Concerns, I have a few.

Offensive Line is underperforming, even Rex said so. Sure, teams are stacking the box and they have faced decent units, but do not seem to get a push on first down running plays. If they want to be considered one of the best lines in football as advertised, they need to improve.

Faneca is not pass blocking very well, at all.

So far injury free, little depth on offense at any position, really, if you think about it.

The kid is making mistakes, some that we would be killing Clemens for if he were the QB.

So far they havent hurt, he will cost them a few games. Love his moxie and potential, but he is still a rook and has to go through learning curve.

On defense, they are getting pressure from the blitz, but not from the base lineup. This will hurt them sooner or later. They have no true pass rusher, sad since they have a lot of money invested in those positions.

Was amazed Fisher, a highly regarded coach, did not target the back up CB’s last week rather going after Revis. Perhaps the uni’s played a part in disguising the players? And he left the return man in to fumble again? Brilliant. Sure they are killing him in TN.

In any case, they won the game and in the end that is all that matters, but they were hardly dominant and in fact pretty lucky. But all good teams have those wins.

3-0, it is what it is, promising, but there are some issues.

  41. avatar supercooljetfan says:

i love how sanchez never takes full credit for good things but he does for bad things…and he always puts his team first

  42. avatar steviek says:

    11-5.
    hopefully.
if they can avoid any major injury runs.

  43. avatar Mike G says:

I see a team that’s hungry and a defence that’s playing with renewed life. It’s as if they’ve been set free. On offence their going through some growing pains but once Sanchez really starts to get comfortable I beleive their going to be a very good unit. As Sanchez starts to play relaxed and gets better on passing downs defences are going to have to give up on trying to rattle the rookie and the running game will start to open up.

As a Jet fan it always seemed that we would lose games because of stupid little mistakes. Now we seem to be able to overcome those mistakes and keep moving foward in a game.

The 3-0 start feels good but I’m a seasoned fan[40 years] and even if we were to lose to the Saints next week a lot of unanswered questions that were swimming in my head in the off season have been answered and I can feel the warmth of the light… and it feels good.

  44. avatar coachmach529 says:

A few thoughts as I read the comments.

    - We have a dominant pass rusher, He is suspended right now. Cant wait to see the level of play from him when he returns.

    - The kid will make mistakes, yes he already has, if he continues to bounce back from them like he has we are good, Clemens was never able to bounce back after a mistake he spiraled out of control.

    - O-line face a good front vs the Titans, other than that I dont know where the run blocking went, Fanaca was never a good pass blocker, you look past that when he pancakes a LB on the run though. He is aging. LBs are younger. They are still doing a decent job of keeping Sanchez upright. and giving him lanes to step into when there is pressure. I think we will be fine here, I still think they are a little banged up.

    - I think this is the first time I read the word “Moxie” on this website, very good use of the word. I think it is an underused word. I may use it in a meeting today!

    - I would like to see Keller used a little more in the offensive scheme.

11-5 and deep into the playoffs, would be a great season with a Rook QB, Rook Head Coach, and new leaders on the team ( Sanchez and Scott).

  45. avatar jetssuck says:

How about a team that starts the year 8-3 only to loose 4 of the next 5 and miss the playoffs

  46. avatar Bent says:

Wise – re: leaving Mouton in despite his earlier fumble, I don’t know if you were aware, but Mouton muffed two punts last week as well! Unbelieveable that they’d still have him back there in the rain. He even went back out their after the 2nd half muff!

  47. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

    coach,

The return of Pace will provide a lift, no doubt, but calling him a “dominant pass rusher” is absurd.

He has around 20 something sacks in 6 full seasons, with his high water mark 7 in 2008.

There is no way he can be called dominant.

As the president and lone member of the Clemens fan club, I take issue with your remard that KC never bounced back from his mistakes. Watch his debut game vs. the Ravens dominant D. After a horrible start he rallied a team with a lot less talent than this one.

In preseason he had that horrible INT and bounced back just fine.

There is simply no evidence that he is a quitter, and has accepted his role quite nicely so there is no need for him to be unfairly criticized.

I hope he never needs to play a down for this team, again, but I will be very comfortable if he does have to step in for a few games at some point this season.
