Uh oh … something worth tracking for the rest of the week regarding the health of the Jets secondary? Could be.
We’ll know more when we talk to coach Rex Ryan after practice, but three-fifths of the Jets’ secondary didn’t practice Wednesday morning. Not a good sign with Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his high-flying offense up next.
Cornerbacks Lito Sheppard (quad) and Donald Strickland (ankle) remained out and safety Jim Leonhard (undisclosed) also didn’t practice. Sheppard and Leonhard are starters and Strickland is the team’s nickel back.
Hutch doesn’t seem to think much of it, based on the fact that the team didn’t sign Corey Ivy, but I’m not so sure.
Wednesday is the big day for practice during game week, so it could go one of two ways. Either Rex is protecting the guys from the more demanding nature of today’s practice, or missing today is a sign that if you can’t practice today, there’s a low chance of you playing Sunday, since they install so much of the gameplan today. Either way, this unit needs as many players up for the game this weekend, and not having Lito, Donald and Jim would be a big loss to this team going into New Orleans.

yeah, id love to know more about this. kind of a big deal. Like Hutch says though, gotta wait till after practice i guess.
Really crappy timing. Say what you will, our defense struggled (relatively) without Lito and Strick last week. Kerry Collins was way more effective than Schaub or Brady were (even with the two picks), and that was with inferior wide receivers to those two. Add maybe Leonhard and a much better opposing passing attack and this could be bad. Hopefully at least two of them will be able to go.
Interesting how nobody wanted Sheppard on the field during the preseason and now suddenly feel the Jets are doomed without him.
It does seem that they would have signed a CB by today if Rex felt they were in real trouble.
Kerry Collins was more effective only because they were keying on Chris Johnson. Once they began applying more pressure, Collins was 0-13.
exactly mole
Regardless, it would be nice to have all of our starters against the #1 rated offense. Hopefully our offense can score some points and run some time off the clock to give our defense a break.
FWIW, many of thse passes during Colllins 0 for 13 spell were drops by Titan receivers…
Jets need to run the ball well from the get-go and control the clock this week.
Many of the dropped passes weren’t very catchable. I remember, very distinctly, a pass zipped to Nate Washington was too far away, and Nate’s fingers barely touched the ball while in full extension.
The bad passes came from the Jets D’s pressure, just like what happened to Brady.
Rex said in his press conference today that he expects Leonard to play, not 100% on Lito or Strickland yet, but they’ve improved since last week.
not liking the fact we gotta play oakland again on the west coast do these guys ever come over here??and indy inside their house with the crowd…at least we got atlanta in the meadowlands
Not surprised that the DBs are banged up. They’re blitzing or stepping into the box a lot more than your average DB, so it’s not a big surprise to see a lot of leg injuries from mixing it up with guys 100 pounds heavier than they’re used to. Not saying all the injuries were caused by that, but it will happen more than for most teams over the course of the season. The Ravens saw the same issues last year…and coped.
All of a sudden 10 DBs on the roster makes sense, huh?
Rusty – Yeah, it’s a pain. We did get them on the last day in 2006, if you recall. I vote they leave Jenkins at home for that one. The West Coast trips really drained him last year.
As a suffering Mets and Jets fan it is in my blood to think the bottom is going to fall out. Although my brain tells me not to get deflated if Brees carves up Jets secondary like Cutler did last year after beating the Titans as well, I still have faith that the Jets will be victorious this Sunday. And even if the Jets do lose, its a non-conf L and we would have the tiebreaker over every AFC team not undefeated. And the week after the Jets get to pound “Fresh Fish” Henne.
To answer yo question. The Raaaaaiiiiideeeerrs played at the meadowlands the last week of the season 2 years ago when we clinched a wildcard on New Years Eve. I know cause I was there….you know…the week before we got knocked out up in NE
3 years ago robbie, time flies
Kinda off the topic but guys are killing Gholston. Whats the deal with Bryan Thomas?is he playing ?WTF.
Collins also completed some throws where there was not much of a window and the coverage was solid – have to Collins credit
starz: I thought Thomas was pretty active Sunday.
zartan,
Rex awarded a game ball to Gholston today according to someone who saw the press conference. (It’s showing tonight on SNY at 12:30am and 2am.)
Good point bent. i really think the jets can win this one. last week i think the saints got exposed by the bills. they had 5dbs on the field most of the game. i know rex would never do that but i KNOW he;s a better defensive coach then dick jauron and will find some way to shut down/ slow down the saints godly offense. if sheppard and leonhard play, we can definately win this game. i hate to say it but if they dont play… you can chalk up a 3-1 record.
yup VG got a game ball. press conf on nyjets.com
Indeed when Trusnick won Special Teams Player of the Week they took away his game ball (because Ryan says on his team you’re not allowed to win an NFL and a team award) and gave it to VG
bent
if jamarcus russell keeps it up we prob can give jenks the week off…better than last years 4 trips to the west coast what was going on in the head of the person in charge of scheduling i know it was last year and over with but it always bothered me that it was allowed cause we went 0-4
zartan
if you remember bryan thomas got a pretty important sack in which i dont know how kerry collins didnt fumble it
if we can get some big time eating drives like we had in houston we can very well win this game im just hoping if we win the saint fans will comeback monday and apologiize for being annoying and border line obnoxious with that who dat!! crap
i think we should start surprising teams and start throwing to Ben Hartsock more he does have good hands and when he is in teams are gonna expect the run…im not saying hes gonna be getting td’s all day but he def can be a big 1st down maker for us and make teams think twice about stacking the box when he is in
Rusty Sanchez,
I remember that sack too. Collins must have gorilla sized hands or something to not fumble that ball. He one handed it the entire way into the turf.
By the way all, we can’t sign Miller to replace either of these guys because the Raiders re-signed him. The fact that the Raiders like him makes me think the Jets were smart to get rid of him haha
i hate to sound like a broken record but the fact we havent been hearing alot about the michael crabtree tampering charges a good thing or bad thing ???
just was looking on the buffalo rumblings site and they claim that the biggest rivalry in the nfl is bills vs fins??in the article they had a little joke about rex’s big mouth comparing it to his midsection…i thought jets vs fins is way bigger of a rivalry??and jets vs pats is a fairly new one but def bigger than bills vs fins
What’s With All The Saints Fans???
My god!!! All week, it seems like I’m reading more Saints fans posts, then Jets fans posts!!! Don’t get me wrong, I actually don’t mind!!! In fact, I think it’s kinda cool, as long as they don’t start getting too rowdy!!! As far as the game goes, I really hope Shephard, Strickland, & Leonhard are able to contribute on Sunday!!! If not, we’re in for a possible shootout, & to be completely honest, I don’t like our chances if it turns out to be high scoring affair!!! I’m not saying we can’t win in a shootout, but if we can hold New Orleans to 24 points, or less…….I like our chances!!!
J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Jet Fans – Saints fan here,
Really what’s caused these injuries?
I haven’t seen the only game but for against New England….
Did the players get hurt making plays against Ten?
Is this more in practice?
Do ya’ll think its the scheme of forcing the corners to make the tackle against larger lineman and fullbacks?
I mean we’ll still have the same problem if we continue going at it as a 3-4 since we don’t have many def. tackles!
When I watched the Patriots game, I got goose-bumps hearing J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S! in the beginning of the game.
First of all, I was at the game this past Sunday and heard the JETS chant…UNBELIEVEABLY LOUD AND AMAZING…….the team looked great early on then stalled offensively third quarter…Defense remained strong..REVIS is an amazing athlete in person…think the rain was a definite factor in both teams performance..JETS prevailed!!! I say bring on the AINTS!!!! Brees is strong but the JETS and RYAN are determined and diligent in their mission…sounds like a team of CHAMPIONS!!! P.S…..largebarge…I agree with your post!!!
P.S. This past Sunday was my first JETS game EVER…saw the new stadium next door…can’t wait till 2010…always heard about the chant but to hear in person was crazy…..and did I say LOUD!!!…I actually saw the FIREMAN in person…TOO FUNNY…looking forward to returning for the beatdown on MIAMI..JETS…JETS….JETS!!!!
There were four clear drops of perfect Collins passes during that streak, absolutely nothing to do with Jets defense. A couple of them were big plays that would have made a difference. At no point was Collins rattled, he did not have Tom Brady happy feet. There were some forced bad throws due to the pressure though, and overall I would rather see them rush Brees than sit back.
Don’t take much away from Buffalo hanging tough vs. Saints, N’orlens is a different team at home, always has been, and Buf is one of the toughest road games a dome team could draw.
This is going to be a very tough game, especially with a weakened secondary, but even if Jets lose they still look like they will be 6-2 at worst at the bye, and I will take that any time.
Anyone think that the Saints’ loss of pro bowl OT Jamaal Brown will offset some of the impact of the Jets injured DB’s?
Think Rex will be running a few blitzes at his replacement? Brees better have his dancing shoes on.
He hasn’t played and they’re doing just fine without him, so no.
I think we’ll see a variety of blitzes from all angles again.
Losing Brown doesnt mess them up, but I think what hurts them is if Bushrod cant play Sunday at LT. He missed half the game against buffalo after rolling his ankle and apparently he hurt both his ankle and knee. If he cant go they are down to their third string LT, who was expected to be the backup RT this season. I think the Jets will attack that position big time this week.
WOJF
I am not sure if it will offset the Saints offense but they are better this year becasue they can run the ball….not having J Brown is a huge problem for their run game.
I actually believe we get the pressure following Jenks up the middle with the LB’s
If they cant run the ball against us Brees is going to get hurt.
As to Collins…he had to make “perfect” throws to complete passes. Our DB’s (especially Revis) had great coverage most of the game. I really wish we had Strickland and Shep for this game.
We are only into week 4 and most teams have a multitude of injuries. Why does the NFL continue to only allow a team to use 46 players on Sunday. Doesn’t it make more sense to have everyone of the 53 available to possibly keep the fringe injured players somewhat healthier? What possible reason is there to pay guys full salary, have them practice all week and then have them sit on Sunday when they can lessen the burden of the several who are mildly injured and thus reduciing the risk of further harm
Let’s not fear the Saints too much. Respect them? Yes. Fear them? No. Last year the Jets blew the doors off an explosive O and superbowl contender. I watched NFL reply of the Jets/Titans game and Gholston had a game saving tackle on CJ on a 35 yd run. Gholston was initially on the line of scrimmage trying to penetrate through the Titans OT, when CJ ran down the sideline Gholston hustled down the field although he was 15 yds behind him. CJ juked a jets secondary and was going to the house when Gholston caught him from behind and stop a game tying TD late in the 4th quarter….
in todays daily news they saying even rhodes and revis are nursing some injuries too…hopefully they just overexaggerating but its not looking good for our db’s right now
I am not sure anyone fears the Saints. They have an explosive offense but if we can hit Brees….things change.
I am not sold on thier run game or their “new” defense just yet.
As to the VG play. He showed hustle tracking down CJ. But Johnson would have been tackled 10 yards down the field by Rhodes. Great hustle play but not a TD saving tackle.
I think everyone sees that the light is slowly going on for Gholston but until he makes consistent plays he is just another player at this point….one that will lose playing time when Pace gets back
saw an article that said the jets blitz 62.6% of the time and the bears who are 2nd on that list blitz 47.5% of the time…the league average is 35.6%…thas a pretty big difference but it seems to be working
s97 – welcome to TJB.
The Strickland and Sheppard injuries occured during the Pats game – both guys limped off the field. Jenkins has had a bad back for a while so that injury comes and goes. The others – Rhodes, Revis, Leonard, Izzo, etc are the Jets responding to the Favre fine and reporting any guy with a hangnail. They should all play 100%.
