News: LB Trusnik Named an AFC Player of the Week

by Angel Navedo on September 30th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

SPECIAL TEAMS: LB JASON TRUSNIK, JETS

Trusnik tied for a team high with two tackles on special teams and was part of a unit that created two turnovers that led to 14 points in the Jets 24-17 win against the Titans.

In the first quarter, Trusnik forced a fumble when he knocked the ball loose from Titans kick returner Ryan Mouton and recovered the ball at the Titans 19-yard line. The Jets scored five plays later to take a 14-0 lead. Through Week 3, Trusnik is tied for a team-high six tackles on special teams.

In his third season from Ohio Northern, this is Trusnik’s first career Player of the Week Award.  The last Jet to win AFC Special Teams Player of the Week was kick returner-running back Leon Washington in Week 11 of 2008.

Trusnik is the second Jet to win an AFC Player of the Week award this season, joining linebacker David Harris who won in Week 1 after getting 11 tackles and a sack against the Texans.

Other nominees for AFC Special Teams Player of Week 3:

  • New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who tied his career high with four made field goals (22, 33, 33 and 21).
  • Baltimore punter Sam Koch, who punted four times for 176 yards (44.0 average) and placed two inside of the 20-yard line.

It’s VERY surprising to hear that a non-returner won a special teams award. How do they determine the winner?

  2. avatar Row says:

yeah, i’m surprised Harvin didn’t win it. that run back pretty much gave Minnesota a chance to stay in that game.

  3. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

Good for him, I would love for this guy to stick with this team. This is just the type of guy we need on our team. He is the type of guy that may be able to step into the starting role in a few years when Scott retires…………..

  4. avatar Peter says:

I’m assuming that Harvin won it in the NFC.

Good for Trusnik. He’s carving out a nice niche for himself.

Trusnik beat out New England kicker Stephen Gotskowski, who tied his career high with four made field goals (22, 33, 33 and 21) and Baltimore punter Sam Koch, who punted four times for 176 yards (44.0 average) and placed two inside of the 20-yard line.

I’ll edit the post to include that info

Harvin did win ST Player of the Week for the NFC.

For those interested, here are the other winners:

    Defense: LB Brendan Ayabadejo, Ravens

The biggest special teams play of the game was Brad Smith holding down Mouton to let Izzo get the ball on the muffed punt.

  8. avatar Angel Navedo says:

lol. I agree, ronnie. The animated .gif is hilarious.

    Hahaha, good stuff Angel.

    @ Jeff,

I completely agree. Trusnik needs to stay on the team and get some reps at ILB. Once given a shot, I think he’s got the mental and physical tools to be a very solid player.

  10. avatar R in CT says:

Almost looks like Smith went for a UFC submission hold on Mouton! A real heads up play that really was the turning point that got the Jets back into it.

    Congratulations, Jason

agree with you…if it wasn’t for smith holding him down like that mouton could have recovered the ball since it was only an arms length away from him…heads up play by smith…just my thoughts…

  13. avatar Harvlis says:

Everyone is saying that Mouton handed us the game. I thought Trusniks’ first hit on Mouton was a blast that shook Mouton up. Many returners would have given up the ball after that hit. Mouton was doubting himself, from that moment on. Who knows how Mouton would have played, if he wasn’t rocked by Trusnik early on.

awesome, jacked special teams is a massive advantage. just remember to do your jobs and dont fly around trying to be the hero. the good stuff will come to you in due time.
