(Note: unless he attains 45% of defensive snaps within his first 4 years, the guaranteed money is actually only $17m…and he’s unlikely to get close to that this year – he’s already behind and Pace isn’t back yet. This doesn’t affect anything you said, just wanted to point it out).

VG is owed $21 million in guaranteed money. it would make absolutely no sense to cut him, when he is only 23 and showing signs of improvement. people screaming “cut him” do not understand the financial aspect (salary cap) of football

is he living up to his contract? hell no. but he is improving. there are a number of different ways his career could turn out. he could continue to develop at OLB. he could add weight and play DE. again, he is only 23 and it was well known (before the draft) that he would be a project. lets settle down and see what happens…

One last thing: it is interesting that there are nine links posted here in today’s Daily Links, and none of them are about Gholston, yet because Vilma was mentioned, 9 of 10 comments are Gholston-related.

Yes. The only argument against this is that Ryan cannot emulate game situations in practice (some players are better gameday and stink in practice), so he is giving him four games and all the time to prove himself.

So certainly a better approach than Mangini took, but the results may prove to be the same.

And you’re right, he will see less time vs the Saints and then Pace is back.

Agreed, greg. I was actually surprised to see him get so much time. With the Saints passing game, I expect we’ll see more 5 DB sets so his playing time will probably decrease once again.

Gholston is a work in progress.

I think we can all agree that Rex Ryan is a refreshing face of this organization — a no nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is guy who rarely does anything that will not benefit his team.

So with that said, I’m not sure why anyone would believe that Eric Mangini’s decision to bury Gholston was the right one and that Rex Ryan is making a mistake in getting him on the field and trying to get the star out of him.

I highly doubt Rex is mistaken on this read, and I am certain he is not just doing this for face value.

Dumping him becomes easier over time, but then figuring out how good he’s going to be becomes easier over time too. So, let’s give it some time (remember, he came out early and last year was a waste, so he’s practically a rookie) before we consider dumping him. He might surprise you.
