News: Sheppard and Strickland OUT vs. Saints
It’s been doom and gloom all week, with the news on injured DBs Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland seemingly getting worse as the days went along. Now, it’s official: Sheppard and Strickland will not be in uniform Sunday when the Jets face off against the league’s top-rated passing attack.
Rex Ryan just told us that CB Lito Sheppard (quad) and CB Donald Strickland (ankle) are OUT against the high-powered Saints.
Looks like CB Dwight Lowery will start again. Ryan said he thought about signing a cornerback but says with four safeties they can move enough pieces around.
Lowery made some plays, but Drew Coleman was the standout sub in the secondary last week against the Titans. Needless to say, whether it’s Lowery, Coleman or Marquice Cole, the Jets will need someone to step up and make a play.

This is trouble against, the Saints, but faith in Rex. If he thought we needed help, he would have signed help.
Seems like a good game to open up Sanchez with our defensive injuries. Non-conference opponent in a very hostile environment. Saints are going to stack the box daring us to throw. Would be a great learning experience for Sanchez and we can see what he really has.
I don’t understand not signing Miller or Ivy. The whole secondary is banged up including Revis & Leonard.
Signing a corner at this point isnt going to help right away, you cant sign a corner off the streets and expect him to make an impact a few days later. Rex will use extra safetys to make up for the loss of Sheppard and Strickland, look for Eric Smth to play a ton of snaps.
Looks like Ryan is going to lean heavy on E Smith (along with Rhodes and Leonard) in pass coverage and blitz packages.
My feeling is that Rex is trusting his guys that have been with the team since Training Camp who know the system like Cole and Coleman to step up. We may even see Eric Smith line up at CB and Dig take his place at Safety. I could see trying to fit in a guy like Miller or Ivy (even though he knows the system) and actually paying for it on the field since they haven’t practiced with the team messing up the chemistry. (remember they are cast offs without a team for a reason). If the Jets decide to sign anyone it would be out of sheer deperation or at least not until the Bye when more time can be invested in the new player.
It is a long season. Better to let these guys heal up completely. If this was a playoff game, it might be a different story. We did okay with Lowery, at the beginning of last season. No reason he couldn’t step up here. I’ve got a feeling he will be good for at least one pick, tomorrow.
I know people hate this term, but this game really is just icing on the cake. To me, strangely enough I think the big test is monday night. Lets see if we really are a powerhouse and can oblitherate the garbage teams. If we go out against Miami and win by 7 thats a loss in my book. As long as this NO game is close I’m fine. Not making excuses, because I still really want this one and if they lose, than the better team probably won, but c’mon who wouldn’t take a 3-1 start?
i would. TOTAL DOMINATION OF THE PATS. WE LOSE THEY WIN WE ARE UP 1 GAME. POUND THE BREES!
As Bart Scott said, we played basketball the first two weeks, and smash mouth the 3rd week. This is another one of those basketball type games for our D. I feel we will dominate again. I have complete faith in Rex’s gameplans and schemes to win this game, even with Sheppard and Strickland not playing!
The running game really needs to step up to help keep the D rested, they are due for a big game, nows the time we need it the most!
THE BETTER TEAM? Lets take a look at the last 3 weeks. NO played Det, Mcnabb less Philly and Buffalo without lynch. Brees looked like a short QB last week for 3 Quarters with Buff sending 4. Now with the Green Machine sending at any time 6,7, or 8 and 1.8 seconds to release the loaf of bread shorty is gonna look real tasty. what the hell is that on his face? Dharris cleat mark.
If our corners can stay physical with these receivers, we have a good shot at shutting down their passing game. Safety support over Henderson to take away his deep ball and Revis on Colston should be enough. The reason NO was able to establish such a potent run game against the Bills was that the Bills couldn’t keep their offense on the field long enough for their defense to rest up in the second half.
I take that back Brees is a ggooodd guy. Just not this week he is just kie every one else we play.I HATE THEM! TOTAL DOMINATION! D fence wins championships no matter what rules goodell puts in place. Let the players play. Remember to count how many times you say this on sunday “HERE THEY COME” !!!!
This doesn’t count as good news but on the bright side, with Sheppard now missing his second game that should only help us in his trade right? The draft pick we give up is determined on a few things including % of snap counts….2 games out is going to help keep that % low.
Every game is important but I’m glad they aren’t treating this one like a playoff game and risking further injury to Sheppard and Strickland. After this week we finally get Pace back, and **IF** we lose this game than at the very least its to an NFC team so it won’t haunt us tiebreaker wise come playoff time.
However we do play to win the game..4-0 would be amazing!!!
We are definitely winning this game. I am so confident in our defense. Saints are horrible against the pass, even with Darren Sharper back there, and I think this is a big game for Cotchery, Stuckey, and Keller. Maybe even some LW out of the backfield. One thing to consider is the O-Line. They must improve this week in pass protection. Run blocking is something I think will come along as the season progresses. I would like to see some Shonne Greene this week. Maybe 4-7 carries? TJ is averging 2.3 yards per carry outside of those 2 big 4th quarter runs week 1. LW is averaging just under 5 total. I think Shonne and LW can be the bruiser and change of pace package we need.
OH BY THE WAY! The game is on TV here in San Diego this weekend, and next weekend I get the Monday night! You all may not understand this, but being out here requires fine tuning on how to watch or listen to the games. This is a big week for me. Makes me appreciate it more!
CAJF….got to get directv…..net cost is less than going out to sports bar 15 sundays
CAJF….you are welcome at my place in Poway any Sunday to watch
soo is Shonn Greene ever going to play>?
I am confident in our defense…we will win this game by 10 points…I predict 3 sacks and and interception for our defense! Let’s go JETS!
Dirty#6,
Do you think that Rex will quote you, during his pre-game speech?
As Joe C said, “Pound Brees”. There is no reason that we can’t beat this team.
lito stays hurt i say get rid of him
TOON sweet…I live in Eastlake..Thanks..maybe I will take you up on it.
CAJF: get me here astitzer@cox.net
My worry is Revis. He’s banged up too.
Fortunately our run D has been good and even though we weren’t great last week we were better than any other team against Tenn.
The 4th Q could be huge and if the Jets will need to have the lead to make the Saints one dimensional.
Brees has only been sacked 4 times so getting to him won’t be so easy but it’s not impossible.
They are also +4 in the turnover category so NY have to really take care of the ball this week.
im not worried about the D…its more the O that has me worried…is shotty gonna call a good game or is he gonna flop…this is my only concern…
Brett, time to drop Shonn off your Fantasy roster, he will not play anytime soon, I hope, because it would mean TJ or Leon is hurt.
