Buzz: Braylon Edwards Traded to Jets

Adam Schefter is reporting on ESPN (via FanHouse) that the Jets have traded for Braylon Edwards.

Analysis: Edwards had a good year in 2007, and he bested Darrelle Revis in that Browns-Jets game, if you remember. Edwards is one of those frustrating guys, who has all the talent in the world, but seems to either not want to, or not care to play football to his full abilities. Edwards seems more concerned with how he looks, where he parties and what his Q rating is. Still this trade has been talked about for months and months, so where there’s smoke, eventually there’s going to be fire.

Whatever the Jets gave up, it better not be in expectation of what value he could bring to the team, but rather what his current value is. The Browns probably decided to let Edwards go after his incident with a teammate on Sunday, and then with Bron Bron’s entourage later Sunday night / Monday morning. It was time for Mangini to part ways with Braylon, but good for the Jets, his value couldn’t be lower.

Until proven otherwise, I think that Edwards is a punk, but nevertheless, a talented punk. This trade reminds me of the Latrell Sprewell days as a Knick. Before he played for my team, I hated him, once he was dropping 25 a game, he was my man.

I’d not be surprised if Brad Smith isn’t involved in the compensation of this deal. Still, even if there isn’t a player going back to Cleveland, it will likely be one of those squishy valued escalating value picks that Tannenbaum likes to use. Still, I’ll be mad if the team paid more than a third rounder for Braylon Edwards, who is at the nadir of his career right now.

    WOOOO!

i hate mangini, but he is really helping the jets!

  5. avatar DDJets says:

stuckey, trusnik and two draft picks

  6. avatar MLB Matt says:

    Regardless of anything…..EXCITING!

    Stuckey, Trusnick and 2 picks

  7. avatar daveb says:

    STUCKEY & TRUSNIK –> EDWARDS

    steal of the year.

  8. avatar igs says:

oh my god. im gonna cry.

  9. avatar AKA...Drew says:

OMG!!!! Please tell me we got him for cheap

  10. avatar mike says:

So far Trunsik, a WR and “picks”….acording to Adam Shefler

  11. avatar daveb says:

ha, OK two picks makes more sense! i coudnt believe for just stuckey and truz

  12. avatar Doug says:

gotta find out which picks before I can judge the trade. I liked Trusnik a lot but we’ve got a lot of great special teams contributers and pretty decent depth at LB

  13. avatar Brendan says:

    nooooooo way this is hollerific

  14. avatar MLB Matt says:

    Initial thoughts for me:

Hope the picks were not high. His value is so low right now we could have gotten him for nothing.

What scares me is that it was not the team that was bad, it was him not caring at all. Bold move, but you have to admire the balls.

  15. avatar TheGreenCastle says:

Two picks, Stuckey, and Trusnik? I sure hope those are low picks – those are two significant contributors to this team.

Not sure how I feel about this. Got a true #1 but lost a fiesty slot reciever.

  16. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Trus can be replaced by W Wright Edwards replaces Stuckey….. this might be a bigger steal than the TJ trade

  17. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

i heard no stuckey in the deal…just trusnick and picks

  18. avatar TruJetFan says:

Jets are on the move man!

  19. avatar Michael M. says:

not sure what to think about this… depends which picks. I feel bad for Stuckey & Trus!

  20. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Trade is being announed on Jets website.

    Hate to see Trusnik go.

Edwards better get his ass together or Rex will eat him for dinner.

  21. avatar TheGreenCastle says:

To clarify – a maybe true #1 if he feels like or whatever. If anyone can get him to play though, its Rex.

  22. avatar MLB Matt says:

You have to think being in Cleveland killed his spirits. Having Mangini come over does not help at all.

Just please try Braylon! (And catch some balls, don’t drop them)

  23. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    TruJetFan-

Jets website says Stuckey & Trusnik are part of deal.

Asof 8:40am, no specifics on picks.

  24. avatar John says:

Finally! We havent had a wr with that size and talent since throw me da damn ball!!

  26. avatar bernie says:

The question is which two draft picks. If even one of them is a #1, this is nuts. Braylon Edwards has been a disappointment on the field, a thug off of it, and here’s another draft without getting the pass rusher(s) we need, or the heir-apparent to Jenkins, or meaningful depth on the o-line. You can only blitz so many times in this league, and as much as Rex was worked miracles with this defense, the talent is still not there to generate consistent pressure without the blitz. Yes, we absolutely needed a true #1 WR, but I think we’ve learned from history that you don’t win championships by giving away all your draft picks in trades and free agent signings. You build through the draft. And as well as we’re playing this year, we’re still not deep at all, and will need those high draft picks to get over the hump. I am skeptical about this move. Yet this is Tannenbaum’s MO. He’s like a fan who knows the big-name players, but has no idea about college talent. Because of that, he’ll willingly give away draft picks for the reconizable name player every time.

  27. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Give Leon the Damn Ball-

Sorry my pevious post should have been addressed to you (not TruJetFan).

  28. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m with Basset and think he is a total punk. A punk who just attacked a 130lb man.

That being said while watching teh NO game I kept thinking if we had a Greg Jennings caliber reciever (Not world changing, but a guy who can make a play) to go with Cotchery we could have won this game. Could be big.

  29. avatar mole57 says:

Since Edwards may have some discipline issues pending, I’d imagine the picks will be conditional. WFAN is reporting Trusnik plus picks. (I feel bad for Trusnik)

  30. avatar Nikolas says:

On paper we got our #1 WR,which is good news.
Now ,Cochery, Edwards, Keller looks realy good.
    I like it!

  31. avatar Brendan says:

    Bernie,

We need pass rushers? I’m pretty sure we have an abundance of those now. Pace, Thomas, Ellis, Jinx, Gholston, Westerman can all put pressure on the QB.

This is Tanny we’re talking about, someone already mentioned it, but it’s most likely one low pick and another escalator type pick.

  32. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Not loving the 2 picks but we fleeced Mangini before so I assume they are low picks 3&6??

  33. avatar Dave75 says:

Right now we’re not getting much out of the #2 guy and this forces defenses to back off Cotch with a proven guy on the other side. nice move Tanny. Just hope the picks aren’t anything better than 3rd

  34. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

do the browns have any good lineman that we can swindle away from them?

  35. avatar Jetsfantasydefense says:

I had a strong feeling this was going to happen, especially since his last run in with Bron’s friend. The Browns already have a Brad Smith type in Josh Cribbs.

Like everybody else, I’m waiting on what draft picks.

  36. avatar tazzelrik says:

    Gents,

We have no more holes on our team.

    Period.

    Can I get a AMEN!

  37. avatar Eric says:

HOw could you say Tanny doenst know college players…he has drafted very well in recent years with the picks we have had

  38. avatar MLB Matt says:

I think we can all agree on this, the picks shouldn’t be high.

Let Braylon show us some us what he can do before we chastise him.

He does have some serious talent, he could have just hated Cleveland.

  39. avatar RKNYC says:

    Mangini is gone soon.

  40. avatar John says:

Not true! Thge gaints. Got eli tru a trade and plex via free agency! The jets have not had alot of sucess wit da draft.

  41. avatar Mark says:

Love it. Jets desperately needed a real #2 WR. Don’t feel too bad for Trusnick. He went to college in Ohio. Met his hot wife on Bourbon St. They just moved to Short Hills, NJ.

  42. avatar GP says:

Tanny had better assign him a chaperone to follow him around NYC like Josh Hamilton has in Dallas.

  43. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I see zero down side to this trade especially if none of the picks are a 1 -2 rounder

We have a ton of special teams players that are just as good as Trusnick…. (B Smith and W Wright)

Stuckey while a nice WR is not in Edwards league even if he drops some balls

Edwards, Cotchery, Leon, Keller, with Smith and Clowney as 3 and 4…

    Gentlemen we just became explosive!!!!

  44. avatar Deven says:

Its reported the picks are a 3rd and 6th rounder. Its actually a little higher than i expected but still a great trade. Mangini may have sucked as a coach but still wants to help the Jets

  45. avatar klecko71 says:

it will NOT be a #1 pick come on people… you are getting the guy at his lowest value possible….

    mangini is really smart…..

  46. avatar igs says:

    Amen!!!

The Jets just garunted themselves a SB within the next 3 years and the ability to win one this year. Way to go.

But I agree I am a little worried about what we gave up to get him. Hopefully no more than a 2. Because that’s what was holding Man-Genie back anyway. He wanted a 1.

  47. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

maybe we can trade mangini brad smith for a first round pick

  48. avatar JAY says:

    HELL YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Feel bad for Trusnick? He just became a starting LB for the coach that gave him a shot….. he will get paid becasue of this trade

  50. avatar igs says:

peter king says nothing more than a 3!!!!!!!!!

  51. avatar John says:

None of the draft piks are above a 3rd round pik!!!!

  52. avatar igs says:

Plus he beats Lebron to NY. He should be motivated.

  53. avatar AKA...Drew says:

As I assumed before i am now hearing 3 and a 6 with trus and stuckey

Maybe the league should look into if mangini still works for us?

Sanchez and Edwards for Elam, Trusnick, Coleman, Ratliff for a #2 in 2009 and a #3 and #6 next year.

How does a GM let Mangini make these moves?

  54. avatar Deven says:

he would have lost that spot with Pace comin back but def. a solid backup/special team player. It does suck for him but the Jets got a huge boost at WR thats the important thing

  55. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

Say it ain’t so! What happens if he gets suspended by our Iron Fist commish? Then we have Smith as our #2 WR??

I’d be much more excited if Stuckey weren’t part of this deal.

  56. avatar mole57 says:

Edwards was awesome in 2007, but he has absolutely sucked for the last year and a half, and has had issues with the law. Maybe a change of scenery is all that’s needed (a la R. Moss), but this isn’t a slam dunk yet.

  57. avatar jetfan says:

stuckey and trusnik and a 3rd and 5th rd pick

  58. avatar vbsiena24 says:

3rd and 5th (in addition to the 2 players) is what we gave up for another player who just needed a change of scenario to regain probowl form, Kris Jenkins. Can Tanny strike gold twice?

  59. avatar igs says:

Dag, Stuckey would’ve been a monster actually playing his natural position.

  60. avatar Marooned on Revis Island says:

“Yet this is Tannenbaum’s MO. He’s like a fan who knows the big-name players, but has no idea about college talent. Because of that, he’ll willingly give away draft picks for the reconizable name player every time.”

So he wasn’t responsible for the Jets drafting Mangold, Brick, Leon, Harris, Revis, Greene, Sanchez? If he only went after the big name like you said, we’d all own Cutler jerseys.

  61. avatar Jack says:

I’m hopeful but worried at the same time. Edwards is an off field nightmare and now he’s in NYC.

Here’s hoping a contingent of Jets vets sit him down and tell him the facts of life.

  62. avatar PhillyJetsFan says:

It’s sort of like when Randy Moss left his bummer of a team, the raiders. Just because a receiver has been unmotivated with a lame team like the browns or raiders doesn’t mean he’s lost his talent.

  63. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

    clowney in the slot!

  64. avatar GP says:

mole, a friend of a friend of mine lives in Cleveland and is a huge Browns fan. Having watched every minute of every Browns game in Edwards’ career, he’s under the strong impression that Braylon was trying to submarine his stay in Cleveland, dropping balls on purpose and just not trying, a la Vince Carter in his last year on the Raptors. Not necessarily a good thing, but it might tell you a bit about his drop in production if it’s true.

  65. avatar GP says:

igs, so will the clown, my friend. So will the clown.

  66. avatar igs says:

I don’t beleive in the clown yet. He’s gotta show me something. I do beleive in Edward’s ability to be an absolute star. Dag. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan-Genie.

  67. avatar Deven says:

They can have Cutler he will not be as good an sanchez down the line. An Tanni may trade a lot of picks away but the ones he drafts are usually home runs so it has nothing to with college talent but winning now and the next 3 years. Ei: Harris, Revis, Sanchez like u said.

  68. avatar GANGGREEN says:

I got a strong feeling Bar Scott and Big Jinx will give Edwards a good talking to in the locker room.No way will these Jet players let Edwards act the way he has in the past…Edwards downslide came because of his lack of on the field focus and lack of respecting his coaching staff.Rex will demand respect and will have Edwards walking with 2 feet in one shoe.Edwards also knows that he is going to a superbowl caliber team and will perform at a high level…Call me opstimistic but i see a bright future for Edwards in New York….

  69. avatar DW says:

Does anyone remember Chanci’s short arms?? The ones that didn’t reach for that first down this week and the dames ones that lead to a Sanchez pick a couple of weeks ago. He was not a Chrebet, just an average receiver.

  70. avatar igs says:

doesn’t matter. Chansi was gold in the slot. I’m not lamenting. I’m just giving the guy his props. He was also big on YAC. He actually reminded me of Amhad Bradshaw with the ball in his hand. The Browns got Robiskie and Massoquai so if they pull it together they still have a good core on offense and defense.

  71. avatar GANGGREEN says:

I can also see Revis and Edwards joustiing in practice as to who is better at their positions elevating both of their game play…Edwards is a talent just needs to be in the right place with the right mind set and this guy is going to cause havoc on Sundays…With Sanchez’s arm and ability to scramble out of the pocket and make plays, ya’ll better put Edwards on your fantasy football teams and breakout your calculators cause this kid is going th rack up some points quickly…

  72. avatar D$ says:

Can you please post what’s left on Braylon’s contract? We’ll only have to pay the salary and roster bonuses going forward, which I don’t think will amount to that much. Thanks.

I like the deal. Big upside for replacable parts.

  73. avatar dan says:

Yes, This is the trade in complete

    Edwards

    FOR

David Trusnik, Chansi Stuckey, a 3rd and 5th round draft picks

Again if he doesnt become stone hands (edwards this would be a steal but last year he lead the league with dropped passes, which shows what he can be, but he needs to clean up his act with fines and this idiosyncrasy he has like driving 120mph, or creating problems at night clubs, and dont forget he still might be suspended 1 or 2 games for punching Lebron’s “130 friend (child)” at a night club), other than that he could be great

  74. avatar Hoof says:

I love the move…NYJ PRODUCE stepcial teams standouts…credit westy for that. We gave up a 3rd round pick and a very replaceable slot guy as I c it…and got a top tier talent at his lowest vaule. Low risk…high reward move…I likey!

  75. avatar Todd S. says:

    Opinion from a Browns fan:

I disagree with someone earlier that said Edwards was just trying to submarine. He looked horrific last year and there’s just no way around it. If he continues on the same vein this could be a disaster for the Jets. He’s a selfish player. If things don’t go well for him from the beginning, get ready for the temper tantrums.

    On the flip side:

Sometimes a change of scenery is just what a player needs to reevaluate his priorities and get his head right with ball. It’s not out of the question. If I were a GM, I wouldn’t take the chance. But then, I’m not a GM so there you go. The upside is that he is a good size back with decent speed. If he plays to his potential, whoa Nelly!

Caution: However he plays, it would be smart to handle him with kid gloves. He doesn’t take criticism well at all. When the NY media go after him after a couple of bad games (which everyone has) he could likely tank as he did here (in CLE) when his fingers turned to stone.

In the short term, I’m guessing this will work out well for both teams. He wasn’t going to do anything positive here. As a Browns fan, I won’t be crying in my beer over him (I have enough other issues to cry over).

  76. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

I guess the Jets do not need to boot a player now with Pace returning.

I do not like Mangini, but thanks to him we were able to cast off some quality (not great) players to acquire better players in Sanchez and now with Edwards. So the Jets finally got a true #1 WR. If he limits the number of balls he drops this could turn out to be good!

Has anyone else noticed that the Browns have become the Jets trade partners or even like the Jets minor league team? It’s exactly like what the Raiders are for the New England?

  77. avatar Todd S. says:

    REPLY: GANGGREEN

A good talking to is exactly what Edwards doesn’t need. He hasn’t responded well to that sort of thing in the past. On your other point: winning games has a way of making everybody happy so if you get him the ball (and he catches it) and you guys keep winning, I imagine he’ll get right in line.

  78. They basically gave Mark Sanchez another weapon…

  79. avatar Thomas says:

waiver wire is going to be busy in the fantasy leagues. Might boost up Derek Anderson with this trade

  80. avatar Locnar says:

Good Morning Jets fans.. And congratz on getting yourself the prettiest Wide Receiver in the NFL..
I am a Browns season ticket holder and think that this trade helps both teams. for starters you got a great blocking wide receivers in the game. Yes he drops alot of balls, but the ones he catches are Works of art!!
Braylon said last week when his contract was over this year he would not be back.. so we loose nothing but gain some bodies which we need.
Good luck with your underwear model…

  81. avatar Todd S. says:

What an interesting coincidence that as soon as the Jets trade for Edwards, thus cementing their #1 WR position, Crabtree goes ahead and signs with the 49rs!

Things that make you say, hmmmm?

  82. avatar BigKatFan says:

This is………..whatever, im not gonna say it. i’ll just sit back and let Edwards do what he did to the Browns. way to go Rex

  83. avatar da jets says:

nooooooooooooo hes afraid of catching a ball …or getting hit …or both
