Buzz: Edwards for Stuckey, Trusnik and Two Picks?

nfl_i_edwards_576.jpg

Jay Glazer (who pretty much when is reporting something, is generally 99% true) is reporting the compensation on the Jets – Browns Braylon Edwards deal is as follows.

Sources told FOXSports.com the Jets have traded WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik and two draft picks to the Browns for Edwards.

The Jets haven’t discussed working out a new deal for Edwards.

Giving up Trus and Stuck is sad, I like both players a lot, but Larry Izzo is playing well enough on special teams and the team might well bring back a guy in the Brandon Renkart or Kenwin Cummings mold to join the squad. Stuckey has had some good days, but in the larger picture, he’s a possession receiver with some upside, but he’s not the physical long threat that the team needs, and David Clowney can’t seem to provide to the coaching staff.

I’ll be curious to know what those two draft picks are, Peter King just said on Sirius that neither is higher than a third rounder … well I should hope so. Knowing specifics on those picks will tell me whether this was a good deal or not. ESPN also chronicles some of Edwards run-ins with the NFL conduct policy, and you’ve got to think that should be a mitigating factor in this trade too.

The league is probing whether Edwards violated the league’s conduct policy following accusations he assaulted a friend of NBA star LeBron James outside a Cleveland nightclub on Monday night.

Edwards has been involved in other off-field incidents, a factor commissioner Roger Goodell considers when handing out any discipline.

In March, Edwards was partying with suspended wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth in Miami the night Stallworth later drove drunk and killed a pedestrian. Edwards was not with Stallworth at the time of the accident.

Last November, Edwards was fined $150 and given 30 hours of community service after he was found guilty of driving 120 mph

I just hope that Edwards gets the fresh start he needs .. let’s hope that this coaching staff can revitalize his career.

UPDATE: Schefter just tweeted that the Jets gave up a third rounder and a fifth rounder (not clear if those are for 2010 Draft) in addition to Stuckey and Trusnik. As far as the picks, I think that neither can become a first pick makes this a good deal, but it will be based on what Edwards provides back to the team.

As a note to file away for future remembrance, the Jets are putting more pressure on themselves to do more with less in this draft class … between the Lito trade, and the Edwards trade … so that means Snyder-esque free agent line building potentially this coming offseason. The team’s offensive and defensive lines both need some younger and talented blood to replace the unit for down the road.

  1. poor stuckey..cleveland is fast becoming the new football hell..i wish him all the best

  2. Interesting that we have not extended him yet. I havent done the numbers yet, but he should put us right at the brink of cap room for the season. I have to think the picks are tied to an extension and/or performance. One is likely an unconditional low level 2010 pick since there is no way we give up an unconditional 1 next year for him. Im think 2011 is probably a high pick based on performance.

  3. so does this hurt the Knicks chances of signing Lebron?

  4. Peter King is saying neither pick is higher than a 3rd rounder.

  5. its a 3rd and a 5th according to adam schefter. 4 for 1 trade.

  6. All we have is great special teams players….you saw how well that played out in NO. With Izzo, W Wright, B Smith etc… we will not even realize Trus is gone

Now that the fans and out FO sees that our defense is for real …….we just became explosive. I dont care if Edwards is a punk or a good dude.

Absolutely a great trade for the Jets..

  7. Can’t say I’m liking this deal. A bag of used footballs is too much for an underachiever like Edwards.

  8. Glazer just updated that this is for a 3 and a 5. That is a steal if its true. An absolute steal.

  9. I am, at best, ambivalent about this trade. If the draft picks can escalate to #1 or #2, I think it is horrific.

    Cons:
    • In the short term, we have weakened our passing game, which is already coming off a problem game, Stuckey has been better than anyone not named JCo and it takes time for any new WR to learn a Qb and system.
    • For this year, we weakened our specials, Trusnick has played well.
    • Edwards has proved to be a wild and selfish guy. That is going to change in the media capital with our mediaots baiting him?
    • Edwards has proved to have dropsies. Why will he stop now?
    • I seriously doubt Edwards will get down and dirty and block like a WR for a successful running team.
    • Unless Edwards both stars and adapts quickly, it undercuts Ryan’s messages to his players; Rex has said we can win with the WR we have and has lauded Stuckey. If Edwards is slow to develop, gets in trouble, holds out without a new deal, signs a new deal preventing Leon from getting one or gets hurt, our team will have trouble winning the next four games most of us expect to win and that will alienate players and fans. Plus, two of those games are with the hated fish (at least for those who remember the 1982 Shula cheating fiasco).

    Pros:
If Braylon is able to play in a couple to four games and play at JCos level or more, he upgrades our team and makes life easier for the rook. He eliminates perhaps the biggest and hardest to fill hole in our roster.

    Unfortunate Impacts:
The reason for this trade is that Mangini knows both Stuckey and Trusnik and knows they will help his team now. I feel badly that two up and coming Jets whose performances have been lauded have been consigned to Cleveland. My condolences guys.

This is a big gamble for this year regardless of the picks. If the picks are or can escalate to a one or a two, Rex is banking a lot more on this deal than would I.

    Harlan

  10. There must be some condidtions on the 3rd, because Lito Sheppard requires some conditional draft pick too.

It seems that for next year we will still have our 1st and 2nd and we will not have to draft for need!

  11. Edwards put up one of the best seasons 2 years ago for the browns…they then forgot how to run the ball and the Qb situation became a mess

    He is a prima dona…like all WR’s

The Jets just beacme a legit SB threat in the AFC…. Tell me why this is a problem….cause Edwards punched a fairy boy friend of Lebrons….who cares?

  12. Hopefully Rex will get in his face and tell him whats gonna happen.

The Giants getting Plax put them over the top. While we’re not at that same stage as when the Giants got Plax (Sanchez is a rookie, you know) This is a great move.

Edwards has proven he can be dangerous. He just needs to prove he can catch the ball consistently. But he has the talent and the size, and thats something we needed.

Stuckey dropping some big balls this season may have contributed to his ticket out of town (falling on a potential TD earlier, dropping some slants in NO)

Thus should only help Cotchery as well

  13. I completely agree with Harlan.

This deal COULD end up being the last push that gets the Jets up the hill.
However, it also could be the last push that causes us to stumble back down.

    Time will tell.

  14. Braylon’s “run-ins” are him driving too fast (we’ve all been guilty of this I’m willing to bet), partying with someone before they went out drunk driving and killed someone, and hitting a club promoter that happens to be friends with lebron. If the promoter wasn’t friends with Bron then this would be just another football player fight. Because he’s associated with Bron it’s front page news.

Let’s give the guy a shot to show that he can come in, bust his tail and contribute. I think he see’s this as a chance for him to grow with a young core of players and be on a good team for years to come…..Or at least that’s what I’m praying for.

  15. Harlan…

I could not disagree more on our specials. trusnick while a nice special teams players can easily be replaced with the lies of B Smith, W Wright , L Izzo the last 2 that could have gone to the Pro Bowl last year.

Weakens our passing game? Stuckey has really not done much since week one and Edwards could caught more in his sleep than Stcukey

Feel bad for Stuckey and Trus? They just becaem starters for the guy that gave them a shot. Whats to feel sorry for? they will get paid becasue of this trade

I cannot defend the drops other than the team has been bad and he is a typical prima doma WR

I usually agree with you bud but the guy makes us a better team today and makes us more exlosive come Monday night

I watched Edwards while at UM. The guy will block and will do a much better job than a 5′11 180 lb guy would in Stuckey

  16. This is unsubstantiated, but I read Braylon had always been at odds with Lebron. Same town, but Lebron is the man there, so Braylon probably feels he gets slighted every time Leborn shows up where he is. Lebron said something along those lines after this last fiasco.

  17. I find this deal interesting hours after Crabtree signs with the Niners…

  18. There is no down side to this trade…..

  19. Fact is, if he didn’t force the fumble on the kickoff in the Titans game, most people wouldn’t know who Trusnick is. Stuckey is a great slot receiver, but not a #2 which is what he was forced into playing because of a lack of good WR’s.

    Drew,

I agree with you that this is a great trade, but how can you not feel sorry for Stuckey and Trusnick? Stuckey was already starting, on a playoff caliber team. They’re in NFL Hell now, hard not to feel for them a little bit (going from Rex’s party atmosphere to Mangini’s totalitarian regime).

  20. AKA…Drew is hitting all the right notes here.

Stuckey has made no noise since a touchdown my grandmother could have scored against horrifically blown coverage. J-Co was playing with a chip on his shoulder as a #1, now he’s gonna be matched up against teams’ 2nd best corners. Let it rain.

  21. Waykoolup,
The timing is that Edwards got in trouble with the law and Mangini needed to get him out of town. Crabtree couldn’t have become a Jet until March, so there’s nothing to it.

  22. Great move by the Jets! This reminds me of when the Patriots traded for Randy Moss…Jets are now the best team in the NFL!!!! Barring injuries, Superbowl here we come!!!

  23. One really cool thing that also happens if BE pans out, and we can re-sign him:

We don’t need to draft a big time receiver next year. True, we’re giving up our 3rd and 5th picks anyways, but we can really go hard at drafting some quality depth for our team!

  24. Why the hell should we feel sorry for Stuckey and Trusnik? They’re professional athletes, so f**k that noise. If they feel like crying, they have NFL checks to dry their eyes with.

  25. I went to Michigan and watched Braylon his 4 years there closely. Definitely had some issues early but really matured and grew up as a WR his last 2 years. Seems like he has regressed in the NFL. Talent-wise though, he’s up there with the best of them. Change of scenery, coach he wants to play for, stronger team, the limelight, etc. I believe will all help him regain his old form. Hate losing Stuckey but he always seems to be all about potential rather than actual results. Good luck to the old Jets in Cleveland and lets welcome the new Jet!!! BRAYLON EDWARDS!!!!!

  26. Well, we finally got the WR we needed. Tall & fast. Cotchery’s job just got a lot easier. He is no longer the only wideout on the Jets that teams really need to game plan for.

I like this trade. I don’t think that we gave up too much.

My only concern is if Edwards is going to be suspended under the conduct policy. I am assuming that the Jets felt that Edwards would not be suspended.

  27. I was already buzzing this morning because playoff baseball is back in the Bronx tonight–now the Braylon trade. I’m ecstatic!!!

Just get the kid some stickum for his hands and keep him out of trouble. I think we have the team leaders to keep him in check, if necessary.

  28. This is like Favre all over again — a big flashy sell-out move by the F.O. to sell PSLs. And like that move, I don’t like this one.

Sure, he might contribute in the short term like Plax did, but I would not be surprised if this malcontent punk is out of football in a few years, also like Plax.

Sorry to see Trusnik and Stuckey go — Trusnik gave great effort on specials, and Stuck was awesome at fighting hard for YAC (something Edwards is not known for). Edwards seems to save his best efforts for causing trouble off the field.

Well, I’m willing to give him a chance — Rex has done nice work getting the most out of other guys, so let’s see what he can do here. Guy does have talent.

  29. We were contenders before this trade. Superbowl talk is a little premature. Lets see if Dirty can get through a few games without throwing a pick-six first.

  30. Remember how TO was scared to go to the Ravens? He knew they would whoop him into shape. I suspect Braylon will fall right in line.

  31. We need to protect him to throw down field and Sanchez needs to protect the ball, but if he does that there will be plenty of weapons for him to throw too. Keller Edwards and J-co is a very dangerous receiving core and then add little leon and here we go!

  32. 2 words to describe why I think this is a good deal: Henry. Ellard.

Edward’s on field issues seem very coachable, and who better?

  33. R in CT,

It isn’t different when Favre was 40 and Edwards isn’t even into his prime yet?

  34. People ripped on Mark Sanchez all week for the 3 and 1’s and the rookie mistakes etc etc. But when you can’t run the ball effectively with no deep threat and you have Stuckey killing drives with clear drops… then this becomes a situation where you are asking too much from a rookie without the pieces around him. This is a HUGE HUGE move for very cheap and this will open up the run big time and open up keller all day. We needed this. Who are you gonna stop? Keller, Cotchery, Braylon, or Leon? Cant cover all four effectively so we suddenly become a pick your poison offense. This was the missing piece…. THANK GOD… Tanny is doing a great great job of sweeping the Gholston pick under the rug. Im so pumped to go to this game on monday night…. JEEZ

  35. Yeah R in CT, Plax also scored double digit TDs on the reg, and helped them win a Super Bowl. If Braylon helps us win a SB within 2 years and is working at Arby’s the year after that, I’m cool with that.

  36. I would not have done this deal but if Rex Ryan approved it then I am all in. He has made Eric Smith a dangerous DB. He can rebuild Braylon Edwards.

  37. I think the biggest key will be getting the playbook down quickly.

  38. yeah…lets all remember we have a rookie QB

  39. what happens when goodell comes down on him for the fight in CLE? we looking at fines? suspensions?

im luke warm right now — and if hes gonna get suspended?! i dont kno, hes not a first time offender…

i wouldnt be shocked if goodell, before he hit the NYC streets, sent a message…

  40. And at least when he punches someone in the face it’s a man…

  41. Mangini loves himself some utterly replaceable role players.

Braylon is less troubled version of Brandon Marshall. It’s all about perspective…

  42. This is exactly the move I wanted the Jets to make earlier in the season. Braylon Edwards is a rare WR talent. If he applies himself and limits the drops, he is a top ten WR, which is exactly what this team needs.

  43. Plus its Lebron’s friend so he much be arrogant prick

  44. Braylon really hasn’t been in that much trouble guys. He got a speeding ticket for driving too fast. He was called in to be questioned about Donte Stallworth’s state before he left a club. He was not in the car when Stallworth killed someone.

Other than hitting this club promoter in the face, he’s been fairly well behaved.

  45. Good trade, as far as I’m concerned.

  46. Great move, and really……. who cares about baseball?

    2 number 1’s outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we can have balanceand free up the running game.

  47. Deven, good point, lol. In general folks are overblowing how much of a bad ass Edwards is. He’s a player I can see myself liking very much. Enjoy.

  48. Drew, unless you think Rex is dumb, you have to agree THAT IN THE SHORT TERM, we weaken our passing game.

Rex picked Stuckey over the Clown, BS, and Wallace. If he is not dumb, that means that Chansi was our second best WR. Rex is not the type of guy to flip a coin and have it turn out the same way for four consecutive games.

Do you think Braylon will arrive today and play well against the Fish? Is Mark supposed to draw plays on the field turf for him? What about the games against the Jills and Raiders? Will he be ready to play and respond to play changes on the LOS by then?

And, comparing a LB Trusnick to one of the smaller guys on our team makes no sense to me. I think Wallace is a Jet because of his skill on specials and I concur with his presence. But if everyone on specials was as small as he is, we would be pushed all over the field.

It is OK to think this is going to all work out. That both Leon and Braylon will get deals they want (both cannot be tagged). That Braylon will be ready in three weeks and know the system, Qb and plays. But, for the next three games, we are playing short handed. And all three games are games we should win.

    harlan

  49. Call me a Millen but I hope we still get a receiver in the ‘10 draft for some reason.

  50. To echo AKA…Drew, there is no downside to this trade. Drops have a lot to do with focus and it’s often tough to focus when you are playing for a bad football team short on leaders.

I think Edwards has a chance to turn it around because of the rest of the players on this football team. You’ve got to believe that guys like Scott, Ellis, Faneca, Mangold, TJ, Harris, and Rhodes will not let him pull the prima donna act. Edwards has a chance to resurrect his career playing on a team with a good defense and talent on offense. If he wants to prove the last season and a half were an aberration, here’s his chance. He has all the potential and needs a slight attitude adjustment.

  51. Wow, that LeBron guy sure wields alot of power…who knew that he could get an athlete from another sport shipped off when he wants to…
    LOL
Sorry to see Stuck and Trus go. i was secretly hoping it was Brad Smith and Drew Coleman.

  52. I think Bassett said it best: we are looking at “Snyder-esque” tactics for building this team down the road. And look how well it’s worked in Washington. They have lots of big names, not much success. You win in the NFL by building through the draft. Edwards is a head case, drops tons of balls, and will demand a huge contract or sulk in the media like TO. I just don’t see the need for this deal, despite the short-term headlines it will bring.

  53. Oh yeah, the Jets just made the move that could force teams to only put seven in the box. This move really creates options in the passing game that weren’t there before. Edwards is a legitimate deep threat and could allow the strength of this offense to really come through. Imagine what the o-line and TR can do without teams stacking the box.

  54. My problem with guys like Edwards (and Favre to an extent) is that they put themselves way above the team. Rex benched Clowney for tweeting about not enough playing time — I’m just worried about what’s he going to do the first time Edwards starts dropping passes on purpose (something Edwards has done when he’s not happy)? He’s not gonna bench him right? So that can start a rift in the lockerroom — preferential treatment for “special” guys … cracks start forming in the team concept Rex is always preaching about …

As I said, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and like others have pointed out, if he produces like Plax and gets us over the top, I’m sure I’ll look the other way when he’s asking me if I want fries with my burger.

  55. I actually hate to see Stuckey go. I think he’s the perfect #3 slot guy. Does Clowney finally see the ball once in awhile now? He’s been MIA. Hope draft picks aren’t too high, but in offseason, our needs figured to be a #1 receiver and lots of OL (help and depth). This crosses one off our list, so now we can focus on the OL, and depth elsewhere.

  56. Browns HAD to get rid of Edwards, so hope the draft picks aren’t too high.

  57. This is a great deal. Anyone that does not like this deal is still probably missing Abram Elam and Jay Ratliff and was mad about acquiring Sanchez.

  58. You guys cant be serious, right? Mangini has turned into our Al Davis. Hell thr Raiders give all of there talent to the Pats. Dont feel bad for Stuckey, he had his opprotunities… and for all the talk of him training w/ Mathis this offseason in ATL and all that other bs, he hasnt produced. Its a business guys and were in the business of winning.. Now is he a good guy.. Sure.. No trouble, humble guy…Yeah,, but productive so far..NOTHING! Now everyone has doubts of course its the nature of existence, but the Jets are better today than yesterday. Granted this guy has led the league in drops the last 2-3yrs. But coming to a winning organization and knowing your playing for something and not an 0-4 team has an instant change to it.

And i’m probably the lone ranger that really thinks that this will not effect our locker room. DO YOU GUYS REALLY THINK THAT D-REX IS TRYING TO HEAR THAT CRAP. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT BART, FANECA, T.JONES. RHODES, REVIS, WOODY, LEON, AND JENKINS ARE REALLY GONNA LET THIS GUY COME HERE AND DESTROY WHAT WE HAVE? To much leadership guys and way to vocal to let this happen. Revis will make Braylon better every snap of practice. We got away w/ robbery and you have to give it up to Tannebaum for manipulating the Penguin…. ALSO SPECIALTHANKS TO LEBRON… WE OWE YOU DUDE.

Now to the contract, it’ll probably be 5yr 35 mil w/ 18mil guaranteed. Now you can look for Leon’s deal to get done. Probably 5-6yr 25mil. 12-15mil guaranteed. It just wont kick in until the end of the year, but the probably throw in like 2mil this year to save face…. I TOLD YOU GUYS LEON’S DEAL WONT GET DONE UNTIL WE GET A WR. I LOVE IT…….. SAME OLD ? NOT ANYMORE BRAND NEW JETS!

Oh yeah, we traded our 3rd and 5th, but we dont have a dire need w/ that 1st round pick. So now we trade our 1st for a 2nd, 4th, and 6th. We can finally draft for luxury. I LOVE IT!

  59. Assuming it is a 3rd and a 5th in 2010, how many picks would we even have next year? Including Lito trade.

  60. Harlan

Rex chose Chansi out of default….just because he was better than Clown and Smith doesnt meanit will limit our passing game. Do i think Edwards will show up and dominate on Monday? No but he can give us what Chansi has the last 2 weeks in his sleep

The fact is our specials were dominate the last 2 years with little help from Trusnick. I am not going to worry about losing a good special teamns player when we have 3 guys that can doi his job

  61. Snyder-esque tactics for how long? One year? Granted the Jets need to look at adding depth to both lines, but they have young players on both sides of the ball at all the other positions on the field. You have to believe that Jenkins will be here next year. The entire o-line should return so that allows the Jets to use their remaining picks in the 2010 draft to add depth to the lines. As of now they have an entire draft worth of picks in 2011. The free agent bonanza happened this year and last. The team was short on talent and the FO remedied that. The one glaring hole has now been filled and the team can begin building depth in ‘10 and beyond.

  62. Im disappointed that stuckey went in this deal. We dont have a slot guy right now. Clowney has not recorded a stat yet for a reason. Hes good against 3rd team db’s.

  63. This whole “build through the draft” concept in nonsense. We talked about this ad nauseam but every team goes through trades and free agency. Just because Tanny is good at contracts and swinging trades doesn’t mean we’re Snyder-esque.

  64. Edwards was the former number 2 pick of the draft. He was obviously unhappy in Cleveland. He will be happier with the Jets and hopefully catch the ball. Mr. T deserves a 10 year contract. First he pulls off the Sanchez deal and now he got Edwards. Jericho and Edwards are going to be a great combo.

The Giants were thinking of trading a first or second round pick for this guy in the offseason.

  65. “Other than hitting this club promoter in the face, he’s been fairly well behaved.”

Well behaved is an interesting take on not being arrested. You don’t know how he has behaved in situations where he was not reported or written about. I highly doubt he is a well behaved person who happened to punch someone in the face one night. I’m guessing he has come close to punching a lot of people along the way, and maybe scuffled with a few too.

  66. vinny,
We didn’t have a slot guy before, either, because Stuckey was playing out of position.

  67. At least Braylon Edwards wouldn’t carry a gun into a club…he’d drop it somewhere along the way.

  68. Not to denigrate an entire profession, but have you ever met a club promoter who wasn’t a douchebag?

  69. This guy is in his contract year right?

  70. Yes, he is in his contract year.

  71. ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE GAMBLE.

    sanchez needs to develop
edwards will be great on the deep routes.
it opens up the running game.
you saw from brandon marshall, that you need a receiver to make a play. edwards can absolutely make plays.

  72. We have upgraded from a fringe playoff team to a playoff contender. This was the missing piece we believed was needed to fight for the championship. Now its up to the O-line to get in gear and Sanchize to play better. This weeks match-up is terrible for the jets – Lets hope we can get Braylon in for tomorrow’s practice and give him 3-6 routes to memorize for the Fins game.

  73. BRENT,

could you please get us some video, and scouting on him.
havne’t seen you on here yet. let’s get it going

  74. Greg,

Cleveland isn’t a big city, if Edwards was getting into scuffles it would be all over their local news. We weren’t there, he could have been baited, or something like that. This Bron/Braylon thing apparently has been going on for some time, so this guy being Bron’s friend makes it seem a little too coincidental for me.

Fact is, guys are beating their wives, killing people, taking drugs, and all Edwards does is like to go clubbing, speed (which almost everyone is guilty of) and get into one alcohol induced fight (which a lot of people have been through also). I’m not willing to write him off as a bad person or a scumbag because of 3 incidents, one of which he literally did nothing wrong in (the Stallworth case).

  75. i dont know how you can possibly put the jets FO in the same categoty as dan snyder. they simply arent even in the same galaxy

  76. How did the Roy E. Williams trade work for the Cowboys last year?

This is football not baseball. You can’t plug in a WR — no matter how talented — in Week 5 and expect him to jive with the offense. Takes a long time to develop chemistry with a qb, especially a rookie one.

I’m not worried about Edwards’ off-field problems. I just don’t think the guy loves football. He had one big season in 2007 and then tried to make himself into a star by doing a million interviews and photo spreads. He’s a diva… and not the kind that’s asking for more balls thrown his way.

Granted, Jets didn’t give up much but this move will not help in 2009.

  77. Is Edwards a FA after this YEAR? (Is he a rent-a-player)

  78. Aaron sorry to hear you went to Michig@n…GO Bucks!!

Jets SB here we comee! Fry the fish monday!

  79. this is awesome news – woke up and thought i was still dreaming – if the running game isn’t going to work why not get a proper receiver for sanchez to go downtown to?

  80. I am against this trade before I am for it.

The front office fell for the hot start, hook line and sinker. I read the picks are contingent in which case they still may be higher than a third based on Mr. T’s track record.

They could have signed him this offseason or sooner since there was local pressure to just release the jerk.

Hope Rex sends him to “catching the football” remediation class.

    An interesting local article pre trade, outlining his transgressions and inablility to catch the damn ball;

    http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/10/07/sports/mj1720637.txt

  81. Robbie, yes he is essentially a rent a player depending on the labor deal, he is not signed next season and wants Big Star money.

  82. STUCKEY WAS NOT PRESENT IN THE SAINTS GAME…….SANCHEZ HAD NO ONE TO THROW TOO. YOU CANT HAVE THAT….EDWARDS BECOMES AN IMMEDIATE DEEP THREAT….WHETHER HE CATCHES A BALL OR NOT……HE STRETCHES THE DEFENSE AND WILL HELP OPEN UP THE RUNNING GAME. HE’S A THREAT WE NEVER HAD BEFORE. WHY DO YOU THINK THE VIKINGS ARE SO SUCCESSFUL ON OFFENSE???? THEY HAVE AP, PERCY HARVIN AND COMPANY

  83. Ace, great line ;-)

  84. I agree Brendan. Folks on this site like to point to the Pats and Giants as winning teams that build thru the draft. But every year they hoard FAs and in the case of NE, their draft picks over the last 4 years have been just average. I like to think of this team as not being Snyder-esque, but Cashman-esque…

    Know-what-I-mean-Vern?

  85. My questions is this? Forget Stuckey. Is this guy really an upgrade over Laverneus Coles — because the Jets let him go for nothing last year? Seems to me that Coles had great speed and very good hands, even if he was hurt a lot. (Look at how the Bengals are doing now). Edwards sounds like he’s the king of drops, with highly questionable team-player attributes. Meanwhile, Mangini is raiding the Jets of the top in-the-trenches character players that REALLY helped make this team a team. Between the players and picks we lost on the Sanchez deal and essentially four more players here, seems management is really gambling the future. I hope Tannenbaum knows what he’s doing.

  86. Since Mangini left, Tannenbaum seems to have found his way. I have been a harsh critic of Tannenbaum for some time now but his moves of Rex, Sanchez, Edwards are simply brilliant.
Now I suspect that the bad moves in the past, Mawae, Kendall, Vima, Chad, Favre etc were Mangini’s ideas.

  87. I also don’t think this is like Snyder.

That guys is willing to buy anything at any price the Jets are far from that.

TJ has played well, Faneca, Woody, Scott, who really other than Kimo “Millhouse” VanHouten was a waste?

Snyder already released Deangelo Hall, and they gave away Champ Bailey. The Jets are giving away role players not starters.

Jets draft very well too. Maybe not a lot of players but pretty decent players. Quality over quantity.

And their UDFAs like Westerman are good too.

Not Snyder. Not not not. Plus Snyder looks like a

  88. Tool. He looks like a tool.

  89. Next year will be uncapped and he will be signed. He is a star hungry Wr and what better place to be a star than NY…so he is not a rent player

Our draft strategy is to draft depth …we have youth at CB, LB, S, OL, WR, QB….we need DL and OL depth. I am just not sure of any Jet fan being against this move.

We have a Championship caliber defense….

  90. I was pretty happy with the Jets receiver core. Not the most notable guys, but still got the job done. I like this trade in that we have a true #1. Let’s hope Braylon’s hands get better and the o-line can give Sanchize enough time to get the ball to Edwards. Time will only tell.

  91. gt73,

I think he is better than Coles for a few reasons.

He is bigger, younger, and no history of concussions.

Plus Coles would have cost a heck of a lot more I would guess.

  92. Kudos to Ace for the Line of the Day …

  93. This is an excellent trade. With the right coach, Edwards has potential to become a dominant deep threat. What did we give up? Stuckey? Who else? We all like Chansi, but come on! He’s a #3 Wr on most teams and replaceable. Even if Edwards turns out to be a bust, this was worth the risk. OUR RUNNING GAME IS ABOUT TO BLOW OPEN, FOLKS!!!

  94. Debating which post I thought was funnier:

Ace’s line about dropping the gun

    Moles’s line about club promoters…

    Well played boys!!

  95. D Harris (his old college buddy) will give him the notes on how things work……

Just remember what Plax (everybody apparent goal franchise) did for Eli and the Giants offense……before he shot himself …of course

  96. BTW??

These 2 idiots on the Fan are talking about Edwards getting suspended? For what? punching a dude and he didnt get arrested for

Drinking on a night when Stallworth got DUI?

    Ridiculous!!

  97. And in order to have Braylon not go the route of the LAST Edwards we had on this team, (Herman) Rex should put his locker right next to the Mad-Backer’s….

  98. Braylon’s defense for the punching incident?…

    He has no hands!!

    Just kidding… this is sick…

  99. Harlan…I agree that Rex said he was happy with his receivers, but he also said that they are always looking for ways to improve the team.

I’m not laying this all on Stuckey, but he’s had trouble getting open against opponents starting CB’s. In the slot, he’s much better, and it would have certainly been better had they wanted Smith or Clowney instead. But you have to give up something to get something.

We know now that the picks are a 3rd and a 5th, so it doesn’t look like there is a chance of them turning in to a 1 or a 2.

Finally, I understand all about his off the field problems, and am a bit worried about what we are really getting ourselves in to….I guess I feel comfortable enough in Rex and Co. that they did their due diligence and feel they can work with him. I mean, Ryan knows what sort of players he wants, he knows the sort of locker room he wants, and it’s hard for me to believe that he would bring a guy in that he did not feel comfortable with.

In addition, there are some solid citizens in that locker
room…Scott, Jenkins, Faneca, Thomas Jones, etc., where it’s hard for me to see Edwards getting too far out of line, unless of course, he just doesn’t care.

I also found it interesting that with the on-going tampering allegations going on between the Jets and Niners, the Jets made this trade on the same day that Crabtree signed with the Niners. Coincidence?

  100. I kinda see the BE situation like Brandon Marshall in Denver. They were both frustrated with playing with horrible teams and wanted a new contract or trade. The Broncos started to win and Brandon shaped up and made big plays. Now that Braylons coming to a winner maybe he gets serious.

  101. Braylon Edwards is 26 years old, 6-3, 215 lbs., ran a 4.40 40 at the Combine in 2005. The Giants and Eagles, among other teams, were trying to trade for him. The last 2 years, he has not had consistent QB play, but he had an awful 2008, which did include a 5 for 154 yard and a TD destruction of the Giants secondary on MNF. His Giants game suggests that he like the big stage and national attention; well, now he has it. Bottom line, Edwards has the size, strength and speed to always be open. He’s a deep threat, a redzone threat, and, generally, a big play threat. He has to be covered and has to have safety help because of his size. Just by being a decoy, he loosens up everything.

Harlan, I respect your insights, but Edwards wasn’t playing for Mike Martz, he was playing for the guy who was the Jets’ HC last year…HC’s tend not to switch up their offensive and defensive philosophies that much. Since Schotty was Eric’s only OC before this season, I tend to doubt that the Cleveland offense was that much different.

I don’t get the Redskins reference. A WR of Edwards’ caliber and with his measurables is a high first-rounder. To get a guy like him, the Jets would have had to package their picks to move up. And, the WR they would draft would be a higher risk than Edwards, who has dominated (albeit not consistently) on the NFL level. If the Jets draft an LG, DT or RT with the first 2 picks and they continue to do a good job with their UDFA signings, the loss of a 3rd and 5th rounder won’t mean squat. For all of the Pats’ hoarding of picks, exactly how many bona fide NFL starters have they actually drafted? Seems to me that they’ve been papering over poor drafts with FA signings. Lots of picks do not guarantee lots of NFL starters.

Bottom line, Edwards is a jerk, diva, etc. (and which high profile WR isn’t a douchebag?), but he’s exactly what the Jets offense needed to get to the next level. I mean, look at the receiving corps: Keller, J.Co. and Edwards, are all 27 or younger. And, if B. Smith or Clowney can play the slot effectively, all the Jets’ receivers will be 6-0 or taller…that’s quite a difference from what the Jets have had since Keyshawn left. There’s very little downside to this move.

  102. SackDance99 ……just some up every post I have made since 8:30 this morning

    Thank you sir….lol

  103. An added benefit to this trade. It aids jamall westernan’s development and gets him on the active roster every week, adds depth to the D.

  104. Harlan is such a Negative Nancy / Bitter Betty. Typical self loathing doom monger. I like the move and think the change of scenery will do BE a world of good.

  105. Totally agree with the Mangini’s offensive influence SD99.

You can’t teach what Braylon has and that is talent.

But if he turns into Mr. Dropsie his stay will be hell.

We’ll see if he can stay consistent but I know I would have taken him in fantasy football more readily had I known he’d be off of Cleveland.

  106. no more doubling cotch..no more doubling keller..no more loading the box against the run

    i love tanny

  107. It does kind of seem weird how so many Ravens came here and we shipped so many players to Mangini.

    Or is it just me?

  108. I ‘m just happy that ‘Nikolas’ likes it, and is coming around from his “but what about the team chemistry?” days.

We all, collectively , are making BIG strides as a franchise and a fan-base.

    Gotta Love it!

  109. Does Mangini still work for the Jets? He may have been the greatest hire & FIRE of all time. He gave us a starting QB & bigtime WR. BOTH OF THEM TOP 5 PICKS.

Are you kidding me? JECHO is now gonna be covered by the #2 CB? #1s can barely cover him.

  110. Haha Bubby I too was going to say something about Nik.

I think we have a fan!

  111. I guess the Jets do not need to boot a player now with Pace returning.

I do not like Mangini, but thanks to him we were able to cast off some quality (not great) players to acquire better players in Sanchez and now with Edwards. So the Jets finally got a true #1 WR. If he limits the number of balls he drops this could turn out to be good!

Has anyone else noticed that the Browns have become the Jets trade partners or even like the Jets minor league team? It’s exactly like what the Raiders are for the New England?

If I was Mike T I would call Goodell now and be preemptive with Edwards pending suspension. Get Goodell onboard so we can get his two weeks off out of the way! The next few games we can win with our current roster (without Edwards). It’s after the off week when we will need him, so I say sit him now to learn the play book and bond with the team at practice!

  112. I just wish it had been Brad Smith so that Shotty would stop the nonsense with that guy. Also wish we did a little better than giving up a 3 and 5 (like maybe just giving up the 3). I’m really concerned about getting some good OL/DL depth via the draft. Finally, I loved Braylon at UM but somehow I don’t see him corkscrewing his body and taking a huge hit in order to catch an errant Sanchez pass across the middle…

  113. F#@k. Now Lebron will never come to NY.

That might be the biggest downside to this trade. Edwards may be a problem child, but he’s a talented problem child. Rex and co might be just the career rehab program the guy needs.

Gholston is Trusnick now that Pace is back, albeit at a greatly inflated salary, and having two genuine threats at WR should make slot play easier for whomever lines up there.

So long safeties cheating up and in.

  114. i cant see edwards getting suspended..he didnt even get arrested or anything for the nightclub incident

  115. To judge Braylon’s performance on a horrible Cleveland team is unfair. He was a stud coming out of Michigan and will ultimately prove to be a great pickup for the Jets.

  116. hopefully, edwards and lebron will reunite in 2010! Go NY!!!

  117. We gained Nikolas and lost Harlan…..lol

    Not good trade value

  118. Why do i keep seeing that Edwards could get suspended? For what exactly?

There was no arrest. He has no track record of off-field issues that really matter

Plus the Giants (who everybody loves) were going to trade a #2 pick for this guy in the summer

  119. We now have a big deep threat to go with our YAC machines in Keller and Cotch. Leon catching screens and dump passes. Pick your poison defenses, we’re going to rip you apart.

  120. i’ve been reading through the comments and i dont really understand why people are upset with this trade.

first: has b.edwards made any noise during the offseason or this season thus far demanding a new contract? if not (i havent heard anything) he’s gotta realize he needs to perform in ny before asking for anything else other than a second chance.

second: stuckey was not really that good. he had significant playing time in schottys offensive schemes last year and i think r.ryan saw his on-field experience with the schemes and youth as more upside to b.smith. thats about it for his #2 designation.

third: when i heard about this trade this morning, the only thing i was worried about was how high the picks were. but a 3rd and 5th rounder, esp. if they’re in different years, is great.

fourth: we STILL NEED TO RESIGN LEON.

fifth: i think braylon can be effective right away. with cotch running the intermediate routes and a slot receiver (ie smith wright or kellen) underneath, why cant schotty just send braylon on go or out routes? simple enough right? and the opp. safeties will have to respect his presence.

lets welcome b.edwards to the jets everyone! i think this is a great move.

  121. im thinking schotty develops formations with edwards and JC lined up as twins on the right side, with clowney slpit out on the left.

the D will be forced to shift coverage to the right. have clowney run a clear-out go route, and run the ball to the left. one missed tackle will result in a huge play.

  122. OK for those few on here talking SB..come on I love Gang Green as much as the next guy, but there is one small factor that you are forgetting…..Sanchez is a ROOKIE…have you not watched any games this season. Don’t get me wrong, I have really been pleased with his performance thus far but the only difference in the NO game from the previous three is thier DB’s acually caught his mistakes. They were there in all 4 games..Some of the reason Stuckey has been a non factor is because Sanchez gets locked on to JCo. Kellers been wide open a whole buch and He has been missing too..Stop Talking SB Please.. I am Happy with the Edwards trade I just don’t think it will make a huge difference this year….

  123. this isnt a good trade.
    its a great trade.

Edwards was a stud 2 years ago. that ability is still there.

we have a coach in rex ryan that will get the best out of him…on and off the field.

the key to this whole trade working out is Rex. Rex Ryan to me is the next gen Bill Parcells. We didnt give up much. When I saw we got Edwards I automatically thought Thomas Jones was gone…We’ll get picks with him.

Edwards will want to go across the middle for Rex and for this team, trust me.

    Let’s fry the fish!

  124. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT OUR DRAFT PICKS LOOK LIKE FOR NEXT YEAR IF IT IS A 3RD AND 5TH FOR BRAYLON?

  125. Although Mangini is arguably one of the worst head coaches in the NFL, you have to give him props for constantly helping the Jets out. Remember, the Jets traded draft picks with the Browns to get Sanchez in the draft. And now Mangini and the Browns are giving us Braylon Edwards. He’s done so much more to help the Jets by not being the coach. It’s amazing. Although this trade is huge for the Jets, it is sad that Stuckey had to go. Personally I feel sorry for him because now he’s stuck with Mangini again and he is on Cleveland who aren’t exactly an elite team. He was a great player and I think that he has the potential to be a pretty good receiver in the NFL. He has Trusnik’s situation, although he is a very good special teams player, the Jets have so many good special teams players that I don’t think the special teams will take that much of a hit. We’ll see if this works out for the Jets or if we have a replay of last year when we got the almighty Brett Favre who screwed the Jets over. Edwards obviously wouldn’t do that, but he did not have his best season last year and maybe being on a new team in a better situation will bring his production back up to where it was when he was considered one of the elite receivers in the NFL. THANKS MANGINI!

  126. I don’t like it but hope BE can change my mind. Looks like Tannebaum is back on the Meds and has become desperate. I don’t like it at all……..

  127. this will definitely take pressure off Sanchez and not only in the game but in the Media. If Edwards can produce like he did in 07, then we have a legit receiving tandem. J Co in my eyes was a legit #1 but no matter where he lines up he will produce..its all on Edwards now to prove he can be that guy from 07.

  128. I just woke up and saw edwards is a jet….at first I didn’t like it cuz he seems like the trouble maker….but I’m sure the coaching staff and the vet players will let him kno what’s good and he can’t mess up in the big apple…example is plax….he knos wassup….but I actually like the move now…we r more explosive on offense now….this will open a lot for leon, thomas, keller, and cotch! A couple passes deep downfield will get 8 out of the box! This is a great trade and I’m loving it! Let’s go jets!

  129. This is a no-brainer! I’ve heard people say that the Jets could have waited and drafted a good receiver, but seriously we should all know the failure rate of drafting high profile college receivers. Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, David Terrell, Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, Troy Williamson, Matt Jones (College QB) and that’s just naming a few.
Here’s a guy who has proven that he can be an All-Pro receiver, so a 3rd and a 5th and a couple of bit players is absolute ROBBERY by Tanny.

  130. Sack Dance right on!

The problem with BE is that he seems like football is on a conduit for his lifestyle. Can’t forget that he was discussing modeling agency options DURING a game with Will Demps of the ravens. So yes he is a diva nad now in the media capital of the world. That could implode.

However he is on a team with some solid veterans, a tough lockerrroom and a Man not a doughboy for a coach–and lets not forget a contract year. So I think he performs.

As for when he gets the copious playbook. I say after the Bye week eight. For now he should be serviceable at the very least as a decoy that has to be honored much more diligently than Stuckey. Frees up the box and helps the running game.

As far as the overall team, now there are no holes on Offense. AND we have a skill set to grow with over the next 3 years as Sanchez matures into a hopefully great QB. BY 2011 we will have 2 backs under 30 in LEON And GREENE, a receiving combo of Keller, Cotch and Edwards under 30. I say there are at least 2 perennial pro bowlers in that group. On the OL Mangold and Brick will be solid 7 year vets, Moore will be in the 3rd year of his contract and we should have replaced Faneca and Woody via FA or the draft. Hopefully for WOODY we get a stud RT in round 1 -2 in 2010. Offense complete. Now in my opinion they just need to get rid of Shotty, but that’s another issue.

HARLAN, As for who we lose, Stucky was tight. I liked him but I don’t see him becoming a star and he doesn’t scare anyone. EDWARDS is already a star esp when he is on his game. Trusnik can be replaced by Activating Westerman who has been inactive the last 2 weeks. Or maybe bringing Cummings off of the PS–we all like him. Westerman is the key though.

Lastly with pace coming back we had to cut someone anyway. now we don’t since we did a 2 for 1.

Also that frees up the rest of the picks next year for a YOUNG STUD DE a NT to groom

At the end of the day, this is both a win now trade and a trade for the future 3 years out. Barring major injury, we will be right up there with the COLTS, PATS, Steelers and RAvens battling for the championship for the next 3 years.

    Big up to mr T

  131. Great deal for Jets!

Mr. T will have to get depth through UDFA’s. Meantime, Thanks for the Memories Trus and Stuck… Enjoy “Mangini’s Sleep World!”

  132. The concern here is that Edwards didn’t really have a big year even in 2007–he had three big games, all of which happened to come against three of the worst pass defenses in the league. He, like Derek Anderson, was basically made by those three games.

That said, this is a more than acceptable risk considering Edwards’ skill set.

  133. Based on the Jets history in the late rounds of the last fews drafts that Mr. T has run this is a much better alternative. Who other than Stuckey even made the roster, let alone made an impact? At the least we got a talented guy who is still young enough and hopefully willing enough to produce for King Rex and boys.

  134. to I want answers: CB -coleman 6th round, WR stuckey -7th round, G Slauson -6th rd, WR- Marcus Henry, 6th Rd

failures- TE- Posniak -5th Rd 2006, DE- Adams- 7th rd 2006; OL- Bender, 6th Rd 2007. OL- Garner 7th RD

bender and Garner are still in the league. Garner made the PS but was picked up by the fish.

So not bad in the lower rounds, and if you count the 4th rd then we draft damn well.

  135. im so excited to see that braylon edwards is now part of our team ya see i’ve been telling all of ya’ll that he was going to be a jet one day and now he is, but at the same time i am a little sadden that chansi and jason are no longer with us and i wish them the best of luck cause they gonna need it up there in clevland
