Beyond the discussion about value, let’s just looking at this trade from a straight on-the-field standpoint, what does this mean?
The Meeting Room
The Playbook — I don’t know exactly how much of Brian Schottenheimer’s playbook Brian Daboll took with him to Cleveland, but you’d have to think there’s some redundancies. Edwards shouldn’t have much of an excuse to not pick up this offense quickly, it’s more than likely pretty similar to his most recent one.
The Dropsies — Whether right or wrong. Edwards’ name is now synonymous with dropped passes. New WR coach, Henry Ellard has done a lot of good work with the Jets receiving unit, can Ellard and Edwards work together and pinpoint the reasons that he’s having trouble holding onto balls? Proper diagnosis and then work in that area could be a big help.
The Practice Field
Iron Sharpens Iron — Going up against Darrelle Revis in practice day in and out will be good for both guys. Revis right now is arguably one of the hottest corners in football, so you’d have to think that Edwards will have to raise his game in practice … maybe that will be good prep for gameday.
Time to Gel — Throwing a well placed fooball between two or three defenders is an art as well as a science, and receivers and quarterbacks need time to get acclimated to each other’s rhythms, tendencies and abilities to make it work, on the field against an opponent. We know that Sanchez would put the time in .. will Edwards?
Any Given Sunday
All About Slotting — Although Cotchery will be the primary receiver still, Edwards presence pushes the slotting of the depth chart down a rung. This will allow for more opportunities for this offense, as you’ll see below .. at a minimum, it will open up the passing game, just by his presence alone.
Respect the Pass — Jerricho Cotchery is a fine player, but he works best in that short to intermediate distance passing game where he can sell his short routes, make a cut, make a catch, and then move for more yards. Stuckey has played above his draft rank, but he’s in the same mold. A lot of what Schottenheimer’s passing offense is based on is attacking a defense in three distinct zones (short, intermediate, long) on one side of the field or another at any given time. If you include Dustin Keller, the Jets top three receivers are all most served if used in that short to intermediate area. Adding Edwards gives the team a very fast, very physical long option, which then frees up Keller and Cotchery to work in the shorter areas.
Run Baby Run — The team knows that it’s struggled to run the ball consistently. The team can grind short yards, but has struggled in the more routine situations. Having Edwards, will keep opponents from stacking the box. As TheBigLead prophetically wrote yesterday “the Jets weakness is its passing game, and if you give a rookie QB a weapon like Edwards, it will force safeties to respect the passing game and back off the line, perhaps creating more room to operate for Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, and Shonn Greene.” I disagree that the passing game is a “weakness,” I think it’s fairer to say that the Jets passing game was “ultimately limiting.” Until the Saints game, the pass was their strength, how they were winning, but it was out of necessity. With the addition of Edwards, it will allow for more space between the tackles for runners and teams will send their safeties into the box less.
The In other words, in the modern NFL, to run the ball, ironically, you have to have good receivers.
Someone to Double — When I talked back to Cotchery on draft day, one of the biggest things he talked about was having someone across the field from him who the team would have to pay equal attention to, to help him. Cotchery got his wish and then some. Even if Edwards doesn’t catch many passes, his presence will have to be accounted for, and it will change some of the matchups that Cotchery sees. This year, Cotch has motioned a lot for Schottenheimer, to get him some more space and more effective matchups without Coles across the way. Edwards presence will make teams choose who to key on … and this doesn’t even take into account Dustin Keller out of the slot who might be running free now in the middle of the field against less physical safeties or slower linebackers.

-
Nice rundown of what Braylon can do. Hopefully when he does come here he doesnt bring the droppsies with him. He may possibly be the final piece in making the Jets a legitimate playoff threat.
On a side note, am I the only fan that hates the way that TJ cuts? Whats up with those hops…
-
nice analysis. any ideas on potential starting date or potential suspension for punching lebrons friend?
hopefully he can jump in on monday night.
i agree the biggest impact may be the opening up of the running game w/ upside to him putting up numbers like he did in 2006 when derek andersen was playing lights out.
-
SO I have one question??? Who moves into the slot? Does this mean more time for clowney or smith?
-
the other thing here is the locker room… edwards is coming into a situation where there are alot of veterans, they are very supportive of the coaching staff and the team is focused on winning.
if edwards acts out at all, he’ll completely isolate himself on this team. someone will get in his face. fast.
edwards stills want another big contract. if he can’t fit into a situation like this, it’s a huge flag, and probably won’t get good money anywhere.
hey, remember randy moss’s rep when he went to new england. 2 days ago brandon marshall hugged his coach and ocho cinco is keeping his head down and playing now that the bengals have a shot.
-
ahhh!!!!
-
This is a unique trade, isn’t it? I know Braylon’s current value is debatable, but I don’t think many would question his talent, and with that, isn’t it unique for a player of Braylon’s stature to be traded during the Regular Season?
Am I off on this? Just curious what other kind of big-name players have been traded during seasons past?
-
I am VERY happy about this trade — if you’ve watched the games this year, you’ve probably noticed a progressive inching of opposing safeties up towards the line of scrimmage — they have no respect for anything beyond 10-15 yards. Even though Cotchery caught a bomb from Sanchez last week, he just doesn’t have the speed to threaten the defense on a weekly basis. And regardless of how fast Clowney is, obviously the coaching staff doesn’t think he is ready for prime time.
The thing this offense has needed from day 1 (and really for the last 10 years) is a #1 WR, a guy who you can throw deep to, catch jump balls in the endzone. Seriously, we were reduced to throwing to Brad Smith 1 on 1 against the blitz last week. You put Braylon out there and he has 2 steps on Randall Gay or whoever the Saints had out there = touchdown.
he’s got drop issues but I think that is a coach-able. He’s got concentration issues but maybe going into a winning environment will change that. He’s got nightlife issues — that’ll be more difficult.
-
I think that everyone agrees that the weak unit on this team is the offense.Defense and special teams are tops in the NFL. Getting a talented 6.3-215 pounds, young and fast WR can only be an upgrade. So I do not understand why some people do not like the move?
I do not see the Stuckey, Transik a 3rd and a 5th pick as costly. Dividends can be paid fast. Later in the year, when Mark has gained experience, this offense can become special too. -
Meanwhile, Bart Scott will smack him in the face if he acts up. Not to mention Faneca will probably just sit on him.
-
Braylon may have the dropsies. But so does Terrell Owens.
And so far this season, so does Chansi Stuckey.
This is an obvious upgrade to our team right now, today. -
The Saints and Titans keyed on Keller. With Edwards, that’s now Russian roulette. Edwards demands deep safety help because a 6-3 guy going long is always open…on average he’ll be 3-4 inches taller than most DBs, who can’t touch him after 5 yards and probably won’t chuck him at the LOS because he’s too big, fast and physical. Edwards’ presence will open the middle of the field and make 8 men in the box extremely risky.
I’ve noticed that Sanchez throws a nice deep ball that goes right down the chimney, but tends to drill in his short and intermediate routes, which cost him on the redzone pass to B. Smith on Sunday; he should’ve thrown the fade. With Edwards, he has to throw the ball higher (with more air under it) over the DB and let Edwards fight for it. If Edwards minimizes the drops, life just got a lot easier for the Sanchise.
-
It is obvious that the trade will take away the chance of renewing Washington’s contract this year. But, the Jets should quickly work to put both Wash and Edward’s under extended contracts starting in 2010. Playing the waiting game in the hopes that a new salary cap deal won’t get done is like playing chicken with these guys. Lets face one BIG fact – - – Much of our future offensive yards willcome from these two. Lock em up NOW!
-
Nice analysis.
I doubt Edwards will be able to come in and make a huge impact right away. The first couple weeks will probably just throw him out there to take some attention away from Cotchery.
His “drops” reputation is the only thing that worries me about him, I think the attitude thing is overrated and almost always the media making a big deal out of nothing. I mean, Gary Sheffield was supposed to be this horrible, me first, team cancer and he comes to the Mets and I saw nothing but a team player, giving advice to all the younger guys during a terrible year where he got very little playing time.
Overall, I think it is a good trade, I hate to see Stuckey go but he was a #3 at best and Edwards is a huge upgrade over him.
-
The dropsies are my biggest concern. He has to catch the ball when thrown to.
-
Oh man, we’ve had so much discourse about this. You will see everything that the offense does work a whole lot better once Edwards flourishes. You’ll see an offense that has a real identity instead of a gimmick identity.
This also means no more excuses for Schotty. He’s gotta sharpen up.
-
anyone else thinks its funny that the edwards trade and crabtree signing happened at the same time? crabtree finally signs when jets will no longer need him? i’m not accusing the jets of “anything” but i just thought it was an interesting tidbit.
-
I like the trade in terms of the product on the field. I think that TJ’s and Cotch’s values just skyrocketed.
Even if he does nothing on monday night, all he has to do is run post routed when hes on the field to draw defenders away from the line of scrimmage. Once, twice Sanchez throw a bomb to him and maybe we get a fluke TD.
As he progresses in practice, by Thanksgiving time, we will know if this deal was worth it.
-
Well, we really have no slot receiver now, but maybe that opens up Leon in the slot? Thomas Jones can catch the ball reasonably well for a back, so that would let us get both our pro-bowl RBs on the field at the same time?
-
How fast is Edwards? Is he a blazer? Is that what makes him a deep threat?
-
Well, we really have no slot receiver now, but maybe that opens up Leon in the slot?
If Percy Harvin can play the slot successfully so can Leon. GO GATORS IN DEATH VALLEY SATURDAY NIGHT!
-
Greene, I think it had more to do with the recent barroom brawl and possible game suspension and the fact that the trading deadline is less than 13 days away.
h
-
Neon Leon is a RB guys. It’s Clowney that will have to step up.
-
Edwards ran like a 4.5 in the draft – if i remember. may have been faster. He makes spectacular catches also.
-
Braylon is going to want to come in here and prove himself. He has pride and will want to re-establish himself as an elite receiver.
As for this Monday night, Schotty will put together 4-6 plays for Braylon to run as a start, and he’ll probably have a positive effect.
-
harlan,
yea, but just thought it was still an interesting tidbit.igs,
david clowney on the slot? i dont think so….. it’ll be brad smith. -
Keller will be our new slot receiver.
-
igs,
he makes spectacular catches when he actually catches him… braylon butterfinger edwards… but i like the trade.
-
Guys, Keller is a TE, not a slot reciever. The Jets have a real, legitimate offense now. No need for gimmicks. Brad smith is too slow to play the slot. By the time he even leas in on a slant, the safety will be sitting in his route smoking a cigar. Even man-Genie doesn’t want him.
Greene, the drops will go away. It’s all about concntration. He wasn’t a dropsy guy at Michigan. Michigan don’t make no dropsy guys.
-
a positive article from ESPN.com, which sums up my thoughts exactly:
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/9443/how-braylon-edwards-completes-jets-offense
-
i like Braylon Brickhands better…lol
-
I love that article SackDance…
How am I supposed to focus at work today?
-
Smith ran a 4.46 at the combine when he was coming out. He’s plenty fast enough to play slot. And he’s a good, elusive runner.
He deserves a shot at it, he’s our best alternative right now.
-
The two most important aspects of the trade may both be affected by simply his presence. The running game should open up, because I would have to believe the Titans and Saints would have had to play the game differently had Edwards been on the field.
And Sanchez’s job just got much easier, regardless of whether Edwards has a catch or not– When discussing the Burress absence last year, Brian Dawkins said the biggest impact was Eli not knowing where the coverage would be rolling. With Edwards on the field, it should be automatic that the coverage would be rolled to him, making the reads easier for the rook. And plus now he has seniority over his best reciever!!
-
That article is all I been talking about all along while most of the folks on this blog were calling me Mr. Doom and Gloom. Just like Sanchez, I called it.
Jack, I know Smith ran a 4.46 but anyone that has watched him play can see that it just desn’t translate. Don’t know why they wasted the pick.
-
he ran a 4.45 at the combine and 4.42 at his pro day. he has a 38″ vertical. he is 6-3. the guy is a freak of nature. i cant wait to see him in green and white
-
The trade is def 3rd and 5th and there is no way Edwards can play enough snaps to make the 3rd a 2nd.
We know have a 1st, 2nd, to develop depth on the DL and OL.
Great Adam Shefter line….. maybe B Marshall should have punched one of Carmelo’s boys…. Nice line!
-
igs,
Keller plays 1/2 the time in the slot already.
-
B. Smith ran a 4.49 40 at the Combine in 2006. Stuckey, who had injury issues, ran a 4.56 at his fastest. B. Smith is plenty fast to play the slot, he’s also 6-2, 210 lbs, so he can take the pounding. So, even when we agree, igs (that the Edwards trade was a no-brainer), we still disagree….lol
-
I watched every snap of Edwards in college. The guy is legit 6’3 with power and speed.
You dont go from a top 3 WR in the NFL to a crap player….
Go look at R Moss’s number in Oakland and tell me what they look like….. Places like Cleveland and oakland can kill a player
-
He ran a 4.4 at the combine, according to good ol’ reliable wikipedia.
-
Ramble, that’s because you didn’t have a true #1 WR. No need for the gimmicks anymore. He’ll still get to do things like that, but as an option and not as a necessity.
-
OK, all of our stopwatches reported different times. But I watched a lot of Browns games in 2007 because I had Sunday ticket and frankly, they were a pretty fun team to watch…Braylon has definitely got the speed to burn d-backs deep.
-
Listen we have all seen B Smith and I think we all can agree he isnt a slot WR. I dont care what he ran at the combine…. You need to be quick more than fast…. Stuckey…Welker….B Stokley etc….
Smith is not quick. He can play it but he is not a good slot guy
-
love that article by tim graham as well
“We don’t yet know what draft picks the Jets will part with, but even if one of them was their first-round pick for next year, Williamson thinks the Jets won this trade hands down. ”
its been reported to be a 3rd and 5th. what a steal by Mr T
-
brad smith should only be in the game on offense when we’re running seminole. i like brad a lot, but he just isnt that strong of a receiver.
-
Im more upset about losing Trusnik then Stuckey
-
Like most divas, Edwards has a sliding scale of effort and consistency that matches the stage he’s on. On MNF against the Giants last year, he had 5 catches for 154 yards and destroyed their secondary; it was the only bright spot in an awful season. With the Jets, he’ll get more media attention than he’s ever had. He knows that this is his shot to be considered an elite WR and to get a second big contract. The Moss to Pats comparison is a good one. If the Jets got the 2007 Edwards, they just made a great trade.
-
Slot guys also need to be smart and have hands like goose down pillows. That ball is coming at you very quickly out of your break in most cases. Brad Smith is athletic as all hell, but his concentration isn’t all there.
-
Smith isn’t quick? He may be the Jets’ second-best open field runner; only Leon jukes and cuts better. In fact, the slot might be best for him because it’s not as complicated. My prediction: Smith thrives in the slot…you heard it here first!
-
A note to Mike Tannenbaum:
THANK YOU MR. TANNENBAUM!!!!!!! You continue to rape Mangini. Let’s go reflect back to the begining of this season…. There were trade rumors swirling of deals for Brandon Edwards, Marshall & Boldin in exchange for 1st & 3rd round picks plus players… It is only 4 weeks into the season you pull off a deal for one of these guys for an at best 3rd WR, a special teamer and 3rd & 5th round picks.
You either have compramising photos of Mangini or hard evidence of a deep dark secret that would ruin him if ever made public. It cannot be this easy to steal a player of Edwards caliber for a box of rocks. Can it?
My best estimation is that you were closely monitoring this situation armed with a full understanding of Mangini’s inability to lead a team of hi-priced, big ego men and his inflexible personality to motivate a football team.
From a Jets perspective, I am sure at the level of investment you needed to make this trade happen was worth the risk. It’s public knowledge of Edwards run-in with the law this past week and his propensity to drop passes (which I personally feel was due to his disinterest playing in Cleveland). The bottom line is the NY Jets now of a proven #1 WR coming into a winning enviornment, in a contract year with a lot to prove. Edwards also walks into a locker room with leaders like Bart Scott, Kris Jenkins and Kerry Rhodes who will clearly make sure he is part of the Jets program…. Lord help Bralyon if he doesn’t!
On the football field, this will open up a lot for Sanchez. Keller will get more looks up the middle, Cotchery will see more one on one coverage and the opportunity for Clowney to be the upfield burner is his for the taking.
Finally, Mr. Tannanbaum PLEASE listen to my plea which I know is shared by a majority of loyal Jets fans.
SIGN LEON WASHINGTON to a deal NOW!
Leon is a unique NFL player that every other team would line up to sign. He is a weapon out of the backfield, in the wildcat and returing kickoffs. I trust you would agree that Leon has put in his dues, earned the respect of his players and the Jets fans and although looking for a contract extension, showed up to camp (when others typically hold out) handling the business side of football with class and most importantly not affecting his play or the team’s chemistry.
The situation with Pete Kendall was a mess that I hope was a learning experience. It would be a horrific move if talks of a new contract negotiations were started with Braylon Edwards before sewing up Leon. It would be a slap in the face to Leon, possibly feel a negative ripple effect through the clubhouse and be a PR nightmare with die-hard Jets fans.
I hope this message somehow reaches you. If so, thank you for induling a passionate Jet’s fan point of view.
-
I love you SD99 but Smith is not quick
Stuckey, Stokley, Welker….quick
B Smith….stop watch fast not quick…as ridiculousa s that souds…lol its true
-
I don’t think Brad Smith will ever be a good WR. This is his 4th year and if he hasn’t done it yet, it aint gonna happen. He looked totally out of place last Sunday, and this from a player who is in his 4th season in the same system. Maybe keep him for ST and the Seminole, but thats about it.
-
Drew,
I agree. I think the thing with Clowney is that he can play slot – with development – but also has that deep threat. The question is whether he’s too brittle to go over the middle.
-
ramble914,
I obviously disagree. I thought he played well on Sunday, much better than Stuckey. He was effective in the Seminole, made a great catch in traffic and sustained a solid pop and if Sanchez had made a better pass, would’ve caught an easy TD. As we’ve seen, Mangini did not always get the most out of the talent he drafted. Rex is a different story. Smith has size, strength and speed. He can hold on to the ball after getting popped and is a dynamic open field runner. A nice tall slot WR for our somewhat undersized QB is exactly what the Jets need.
-
Brad Smith ran a 4.33 short shuttle and Welker ran 4.01. I hate Welkah, but that little bastard sure is quick.
-
Bassett,
I don’t necessarily think the Brown’s playbook is so similar to Schotty’s, and one of my biggest concerns is that Edwards will do for us what Roy Williams did last year for the Cowboys after the midseason trade. Developing chemistry and trust cannot be understated nor replaced by talent. I hope he is able to be more than a decoy this season.
-
Wait a minute– just an idea here, but hear this out—
First of all, lets demolish all prototypes. Presume Greene is a player, and the Jets now have three good backs. Why can’t our RB and TE take care of those slot responsibilities? Dallas Clark does in IND and Reggie Bush does in NO– Leon has the suddeness and vision to create huge mismatches out of the slot, as does Keller. Its a great way to get Leon more touches, in a position where he is taking less of a pounding not having to contend with d linemen.
I am not advocating making him a WR, but Rex always spoke about buliding the system to the players skills– using him in multiple looks fits his skills exactly.
-
Drew, ramble, igs, etc.,
Have you seen Smith in the open field? How can you say he isn’t quick? He cuts, changes direction and jukes better than any other Jet not named “Leon.” He’s quick and fast; just not experienced and for that I blame Mangini.
-
Brad, Roy Williams did’t do anything to the Cowboys last season. They’ve always been overtalented, overrated, and underperforming bums. They literally have the same problem at the raiders. Their owner.
-
Brad R,
This was from B. Smith’s Pro Day (after he had more time to practice for WR-type times):
Brad Smith ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.13 seconds, and the 3-cone drill in 6.50 seconds. Smith isn’t sure what position he’ll play in the NFL. “I’ll play at any position I get drafted to play,” Smith said. “But I still believe I can be a great NFL QB. Today went well for me, so we’ll see what happens.”
Quick and fast…like I said…quick and fast.
-
Sorry, Brad R, I meant GP.
-
I agree, Leon on the field w/Edwards, Cotch, T Jones, Keller makes us have alot od weapons. I still think that he is underutilized and needs to have 10-12 plays per game designed to accentuate his skills. Lining up in the slot is a creative way to take pressure off of the rest of the O, little bubble screens, quick outs, etc. he is a player who needs to get the ball in some open space. Hopefully the addition of Edwards will allow Schott to get going with this.
-
I see a lot of comments about Leon needing a deal now, but can anyone say that hes played like a guy that deserves 5-6 mil a year? not i said the fly.
Leon needs to proe he can be the change of pace back that can equally share carries with another back. Him and TJ shared the carries 50/50 and TJ has better numbers (TD’s at least).
Now that B Edwards will help stretch the D, Leon needs to have a few good games to justify a large, long term deal.
That being said, I do think hes a great player that hasnt reached his potential yet.
-
I stand corrected on the predraft numbers, SD99, but I didn’t say Brad wasn’t fast or quick enough. I said I didn’t think he had the head or the hands to play in the slot.
But I’ll agree those are some pretty good numbers.
-
^ *play well in the slot
-
brad smith is horrible. end of discussion.
-
Oh, and I forgot to mention, Welker’s 3-cone drill was 7.09, so B. Smith has a faster 40, a better 3-cone drill and an eyelash slower short shuttle…quick and fast; fast and quick.
-
Let’s see. B. Smith is a great special teams player, productive in the Seminole and has the speed and quickness to be a good WR, but not the in-game experience. Horrible?!? Sorry, the discussion doesn’t end. 6-3 Edwards and 6-0 Jericho split out, 6-2 Keller at TE and 6-2 B. Smith in the slot…lots of big targets for our 6-2 QB. Looks like we’re turning into San Diego’s offense with big, physical receivers, which I’d take.
-
GP,
I think with more reps at WR in games, Smith can get better. It would be a shame to give up on a guy with so much natural ability, especially in the open field, which just cannot be learned. He has a golden opportunity now. By the way, I see Clowney as always outside, not inside. Maybe Clowney comes in and Jericho’s in the slot in certain packages? Like when Dedric Ward came in and Chrebet moved to the slot with Key as the other outside WR.
-
We trade for Edwards and we are arguing over Smiths 3 cone drill numbers from 3 years ago while he was in shorts.
Only us jet fans….lol
-
Is is unrealistic to hope that Edwards makes an impact already this Monday night?
-
all this talk of a slot reciever Why cant Clowney move to the slot where his speed can be utilized.Having Cotch and Edwards on the outside will be devastating and remember we have Keller who can play in the slot also…I cant wait for teams to try and load the box with 8 and 9 man fronts because Edwards will eat them alive in single coverage…
-
Brandon… I wouldn’t be surprised if he does… just having him run routes demands attention. Period. That’s the beauty of this trade. You want attention Braylon? Earn it on the field first.
-
Great analysis.
-
Why is everyone always stuck on Clowney and Smith, they same way you were all stuck on Ratliff!?!?! This is now two coaching staffs who have not featured these guys, give it up! Its been four years, Smith is what he is at this point.
The Jets have a terrific LG, C, LT, 2 WR, TE, 2 good RB and a rookie QB on offense and we are discussing Smith and Clowney!
-
And another good note is that Edwards can block too.Watch some of his game film. screen plays in his direction will pay off dividends because he has the physical tools to clear out corners and safeties…This acquisition is huge and in so many ways I cant write them up fast enough.LMAO….
-
I also thought of Roy WIlliams going to the Cowboys last year, but this is different. There are no other prima donna receivers on the Jets that will demand the ball like TO did last year. I’m actually a TO fan, but between getting him enough balls and the whole thing with WItten, Romo had no chance to get enough balls Roy’s way to make a real impact.
Luckily for us Sanchez seems like the kind of QB to spread it around based on his reads. I like the idea of Edwards but like most here want to see him with his head on straight and concentrating on football. He’s still young and if he gets his act together and we sign him to a long term deal he and Sanchez could be no similar to Romo and TO, Peyton and Reggie or any other good tandem that puts up numbers together over a several year period. Maybe a better comparison that I’d like to see is an updated version of Chad and Coles….but with a better QB AND a better WR…..
-
Clearly, Brad Smith has caught the eye of coaches in practice. That’s the most time I’ve seen him on offense in a while.
Even if Edwards is a bust, what did we give up? a #3 WR? We all like Stuckey but he’s replaceable.
-
FWIW, Smith has gotten in more plays this season so far than any previous season. Sorry about the B. Smith tangent. Today is about Edwards and his impact on the offense, which should be huge. I also think he makes an impact on Monday Night. I don’t think the Jets want a starting WR tandem on MNF of B. Smith or Clowney and Jericho. Even if Edwards is just a decoy, he’s going to play and I think he’ll even start.
-
first, if you dont like this move, something is wrong with you.
secondly, the jets are preparing for the playoffs this year and edwards will be ready by then
thirdly, edwards will only do better with player like scott, jankins, and the rest of the jets around him. i think roy williams is a good example of this. when you play with children, you act like one, and when you play with men, you act like one.this is a great move for the jets
-
Bent, Bassett and co.,
I have a post “awaiting moderation” that has like nothing controversial and nothing even near profanity. What’s the deal?
-
SD99
Did it have anything to do with Brad Smiths broad jump at the combine? lol
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
WHY JASON TRUSNIK????????!!!!
IM GONNA MISS HIM!!! YOU SUCK EDWARDS!!
-
JetfanATL did you mean: Luckily for us Sanchez seems like the kind of QB to spread it around, including the other team, based on his reads.
Just kidding.
I like the trade. Giving up little with a lot of potential. Agree with what others have said—this team has leaders who will be able to keep him in line. Monday can’t come soon enough.
-
SD99,
That’s happened to me before as well. Not sure why that happens.
But come on. Brad Smith is awful. He’s a good special teams player, but we seem to churn those out constantly. He’s a terrible receiver, he’s the equivalent to an NBA prospect who can jump through the roof, but can’t make a simple bounce pass. We can find another runner to take reverses and Leon runs the Seminole (hence the name) so Smith can be replaced in all facets of his game.
-
i agree with the steel on steel portion of the post, but whats gonna happen if he pulls a stuckey vs the titans? we’ll be grilled for the trade and maby lose against the smellyphish?
I like his ability to get the YAC but i really wish we could have picked up a burner to stretch the field…
we’ll see how this one pans out… -
BE runs a 4.4 Pretty fast. Lots of upside & little downside to this trade.
-
out of curiousity, is a triple back set a legal formation?
-
From a 55 year Brown’s fan who has seen them all, I say good riddance to B.E.
A gutless receiver who fears getting hit & has dropped more passes than any receiver I have seen. Defenses around the league know this & set their coverage accordingly.
He has great ability but no guts, bad hands and a bad attitude.
He’ll thrill you a few times with great catches & occasional great games but in the end you will grow weary.
Terry O.

Nothing worse then a spam filter that thinks.
-
Greene,
No, you can have a triple back formation that is still legal. Quite a few teams use it in the NFL.
-
Hey guys…this just in……
Were good!!
-
Well at the very least I’d see the fish’s D coordinator has just shat a brick. All that planning for our O has just gone up in flames.
-
LETS GOOOOO!!
Hopefully we get the 2007 Braylon Edwards. -
Where do the Jets top 2 rank? I count 13 pairings that are even in the conversation.
1. Anquan Boldin & Larry Fitzgerald
2. Braylon Edwards & Jerricho Cotchery
3. Randy Moss & Wes Welker
5. Reggie Wayne & A. Gonzalez
6. Greg Jennings & D. Driver
7. T.O. & Lee Evans
8. S. Smith (NYG) & Mario Manningham
9. Roddy White & Michael Jenkings
10. Andre Johnson & Kevin Walter
11. S. Smith (Car) & M. Mohammed
12. Santonio Holmes & Hines Ward
13. Vincent Jackson & Chris Chambers -
kip …
I think you could eliminate
# 8, # 9, #10, #13 from your list.
Your top 7 and the Steelers are in the convo as long as B Edwards is B Edwards… not the guy we have seen this year….
Again we just became more expolsive…. and we are walking into Monday Night Football
-
Well i hope its no higher than a 3rd rounder. I dont want to give up a first and a second is effy. Braylon couldnt catch the swine flu, and least braylon will be here during new years to drop the ball. Hopefully he makes me eat my own words.
-
Kip128,
Wins and losses, these lists are for sportswriters who do not understand the game! Who cares if we had the worst receiver combo in the league as long as we win!
-
Beating up on Brad Smith is pointless. By now, both his strengths and weaknesses are evident.
Strengths. Seminole, Special teams, blocking as WR
Weaknesses. Can’t get open most of the time.
Adding Edwards may mean he can get open on multiple receiver sets. Once he has the ball, he is a problem for the D.
Brad gives his best. He is a great teammate. Adds value to the team. Is an excellent special player.
Give him a break.
-
kip, you’re crazy if you think edwards/cotchery is better than welker/moss
-
kip, I’m not sold on #8 just yet. Steve Smith is solid, but have you seen Manningham lately? He was juggling that TD catch like a hot potato against Dallas and he had 3 awful drops last week. Even on that 43 yard catch, he bobbled a perfect pass and luckily brought it in. I’ve seen guys in strait jackets field balls better than that dude.
-
Also, no love for Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal?
But yeah, I’m with Cabras. Let the John Claytons and PK’s worry about worthless lists.
-
Didn’t really put much thought into the order itself and overlooked Denver. My point wasn’t the list so much as to put in perspective that what was a weakness yesterday is now a strength. Only downside to me is that our other weakness that I see is depth and this doesn’t help there. One problem at a time though.

Pingback: Jets Trade for Braylon Edwards - Will it Make or Break their 2009 Season? | Zoneblitz.com
-
Meanwhile, if anyone is wondering about Tannenbaum’s abilities as a talent evaluator, check out Greg Bishop’s blog about Trade Tanny– in a nutshell, here are the players that have come to the Jets as the result of a trade since Tannenbaum’s tenure started:
Thomas Jones
Kris Jenkins
Brett Favre
Lito Sheppard
Mark Sanchez
Darrelle Revis
Shonn Greene
David Harris
and now Braylon EdwardsThat is not bad at all. When Tanny likes you, he aggressively moves to get you, and he is right most of the time. There’s no bust in that whole group — even Favre was a good gamble even though it didn’t ultimately work out.
-
I think the Braylon Edwards aquasition can be a great one if he plays up to his potential. I think he will though, their is alot of leadership already established on this team and braylon will have to learn his role where as in Clevland there was no leadership and he did what he wanted and no one put him in his place. We lost quite a bit but if braylon is willing to be a team player it will be well worth it. Lets Go J-E-T-S..
-
i just hope schotty can figure out ways to get all of our playmakers on the field. when was the last time, as a jets fan, you worried about having potentially too many playmakers? this is insane!
someone before mentioned leon in the slot. the concept of leon on the field (in whatever capacity) is a great thing and should be a point of emphasis. slot, backfield, split out, whatever – just get him out there. leon, TJ, edwards, JC and keller all on the field at the same time would create serious headaches for opposing defenses.
-
We have traded players like Trusnick, Stuckey, Elam, Coleman, Ratliff instead of draft picks for Sanchez and Edwards….. like seriously
for all of the haters that doubt Tanny. Trusnick & Ratliff undrafted,,,Stuckey 7th…. Elam picked up from Dallas as a low budget FA.
This guy gets talent without throwing away pics.
We can adress depth to this team in the draft with all of out pics… Our team is almost complete
-
@ Frank – don’t forget about Tannebaum’s first draft as a GM. He only drafter Nick Mangold and Leon Washington (4th round). The guy is a stud.
Sanchez. Leon. TJ. Cotchery. Edwards. Keller. Wow.
-
According to Hutch: Edwards didn’t even throw the punch, it was a member of his “entourage”
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/10/new_ny_jets_wide_receiver_bray.html
-
this trade helps Keller the most
-
I love the Jets, but I loved them a little more before they picked this bum up.
This guy just punched a man who was 130 pounds. He’s a bum, and a bully, I hope he gets hurt. -
Great trade we r a top 5 team with Edwards
-
You know Bart Scott is coming to practice tomorrow wearing a Lebron Jersey, right?
-
Remember when Tannebaum traded up for some guy named Revis? and later for some guy named David Harris?
-
Tannebrain
-
If this guy can keep his mind on football and not lose it, this is the move the Jets’ offense needed. Hoping the change of atmosphere will help him get his stuff together because Edwards can be one of the great ones.
This could become Al Toon in the making.
-
I hope this trade finally quiets those who think Tanny is not a good GM. Read the list above that Frank posted for all of the talent Tanny has brought to this team via trade (and add Dustin Keller to that list.)
Before the terms of the Edwards trade were announced, sports pundits were saying that this trade is good for the Jets even if the Jets are giving up a 1st rounder b/c based on the Jets performance so far this season, it looks like the Jets will be drafting late in the 1st round in 2010. Now we learn that the Jets only had to surrender a 3rd and a 5th.
Fantastic move Tanny. Now let’s just hope Edwards rises to the occasion.
-
who becomes the number 3
-
Zenlaw, the Jury’s still out on that. If Tanny was a better drafter the team wouldn’t need Braylon Edwards in the first place. For me it depends on the way he plays the next few drafts in terms of securing a bright furture for the Jets.
-
I believe this trade is good for the jets i look at it from the aspect of that we are basically renting him for 12 games. Since he is a free agent at the end of the season and is going to want to be paid he will perform if not for the reason of wanting to play but for the idea that he is gonna want the dough. TANNY is the man!!!
-
MLB,
The number three hasn’t changed (Stuckey was our number 2). I’m just not sure who our number 3 was before the trade. -
Stuckey is perfect for a #3 wr, excellent in the slot. If only we could have traded B Smith or Clowney and kept Stuckey.
Clowney and Smith will share the role of #3 WR
-
igs,
I really dont think it’s fair to say that it’s Tanny’s fault the team did not have a big time wideout. This is the first year without Coles or Santana Moss, guys who may not be Moss or Reggie Wayne but got #1 receiver money and were very productive.I dont understand the hate for Mr T bc all the guy does is fill holes on the team by adding the best available talent. He drafts well, works well with the head coach and is easy to get along with. He doesnt pretend to be this huge football personnel guy and always finds wiggle room under the cap.
Just because he isn’t Scott Pioli, and lucks out in the 6th rd and finds Tom Brady, doesnt make him a bad GM
-
igs, when are you going to let up? Its hard to argue with what Tanny has done. I know you will argue that it hasnt produced in terms of wins and playoff appearances, but he has turned the Jets into arguably the most talented team in the NFL. Give the guy some love igs
-
Braylon’s first game as a Jet AND the return of Pace AND we’re on MNF AND its against the fish! Couldn’t be more psyched for this one.
It’s been said, but I don’t care if BE catches zero passes, just his being there will definitely open some things up for the offense.
-
Clowney barely sees the field. Smith is and has been the clear #3
-
Keller is really our #3 WR. Add in Leon Washington in the passing game and we really dont need a #3 receiver
-
If you ask me, I think Tanni has to be regarded as one of the best if not THE best GM’s in the league when it comes to playing the cap, draft choices, trades, FA signings and respectability.
-
Since the Jets traded two players and got one in return, who else will be added to the 53 man roster?
-
im guessing they will move a LB off the practice squad to fill Trusnicks spot. Maybe Renkart?
-
Is Edwards really a good WR? I don’t mean to be a downer, but in four years he has averaged around 50 catches and 900 yds. Is that better than Cotch (or an upgrade over Coles)?
-
HIs impact should be apparent in more than numbers. Freeing up the other WR’s and opening up the running game. Dont let the numbers fool you, opposing defenses will respect Edwards and drop that extra man out of the box.
-
How could you bash this trade? I get why people like Stuckey. We drafted him and now he is starting. He is homegrown. But lets be honest, he isn’t anything that can’t be replaced. How many times did you see against the Saints on 3rd down that he got no seperation and it was an incomplete pass.
3rd and 5th for Edwards is so worth it. The upside is huge. Its going to open up our offense greatly and obv open up the tight running game that we have. You forget that while these guys obv have the greatest job in the world its still a job to them, and that at times they get disintrested and an easy way to get traded. Ala Vince Cater on Raptors, Randy Moss on Raiders, etc. Edwards is still young and I think he will flourish in our system.
Jets became a lot better today.
-
Ian,
Football is a system game, stats are deceiving. When you play for a bad team with a bad QB you do not get good stats, give him a pass and let’s see what the next 12 games does for our team.
-
igs,
I love the debate. Let me ask…when you say if Tanny had drafted better, to which players or draft do you refer?
Was it 2009 when the Jets traded for Sanchez and Greene?
Was it 2008 when the Jets drafted Ghoulston at 6? If so, who should the Jets have drafted at 6? Every expert and pretty much every commenter on this blog thought Ghoulston was the right choice at the time. Mayo wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Can’t really blame Tanny for that one. Do you have a problem with trading up for Keller in that draft?
Was it 2007 when the Jets traded up to grab Revis and then again to draft D. Harris?
-
Eddie and Revis,
Hey, nobody on Earth is happier than me that we got Braylon Edwards. My response was to someone’s comment that Tanning-Bum is officially a good GM with this trade. I’m simply pointing out that until he shows a good appreciation for building your team through upper and lower round draft picks I can’t call him a good GM. As long as you’re throwing away draft picks you’re risking the team’s future.
I do believe if he were sharper and a little more censervative in the draft that X receiver position would have been taken care of at least by this season.
For me, I look at how he handles these next 2 drafts coming up. If he can show an appreciation for being patient and finding good talent at every level, then he’s got it. Until then he’s just an above average GM to me.
-
ian,
It’s all about potential with Edwards. In 2007, he had over 1200 yards and 16 TDs…a great season. He had an awful 2008, but so did the Browns and it was pretty clear that he had -0- chemistry with Brady Quinn. Then, he made it very clear that he wanted out of Cleveland and did what the modern athlete does in that situation…goes through the motions and dogs it.
There’s no denying his talent; only his heart and consistency (lots of drops). But, he’s also a guy that loves the spotlight…evidenced by his 5-154, 1 TD explosion againt the Giants last year on MNF. If the Jets get that Edwards, the dominant, can’t be covered guy, then the trade is a steal.
-
Zenlaw, well a good example would be the Shonne Green trade. The jets had already made a great move to get Sanchez, they were set at RB, and it’s well known that RB is the position where you can almost always find talent at any level of the draft. Considering all that, he still gives up even more picks to draft Shonne Green.
Now I loved Shonne Green in the draft. But the Jets could have stayed pat and taken a RB like Mike Goodson or especially Rshad Jennings. Very bad move.
-
Yeah, what zenlaw said igs.
-
Zenlaw,
To further answer your question, I’m a fan of complete TEs so no I didn’t like the trade up for Keller.
Gholston – a lot of Gms might have saw some potential for an OLB – from what tape I don’t know because saw the guy in college. Nothing about him said LB – but the Jets were the guys that were willing to spend a 6 on a tweener.
As for 2007, you make the big trade for Revis… then you stand pat and take the best guy that falls to you. Might have been harris anyway. He wasn’t high on a lot of folk’s big boards.
-
igs,
There are, at least, 5 ways to obtain players to improve a team: (1) the draft, (2) trades, (3) UFAs or RFAs, (4) UDFAs, and (5) signing players from other teams’ practice squads. A good GM uses all of these avenues to acquire more talent. I disagree that any particular way is always the best way. The only limiting factor is the salary cap and, for salary cap purposes, often 1st and 2nd rounders are less cost-effective than UFAs. Until the Jets win a Super Bowl, the final judgment on Tanny can’t really be made. But, there really is no denying that Tanny has added a ton of talent via trades and UFA signings. This is easily the most talented Jets team since the 80s. That 80s team was built entirely through the draft and won nothing. I’m just saying that there’s more than 1 way to build a winner and lots of the recent great teams, like the Pats, 90s Cowboys and even Colts had key UFA signings or trades that helped put them over the top. Let’s hope that the Edwards trade was that missing piece of the puzzle.
-
igs youre being ignorant
-
Harris was a first round talent igs, the jets got him in the 2nd. Take a look at that draft and tell me where he would go if it was re-done. Harris is a stud. You have argued with me before against the Jets move to trade up for Revis. What do you have to say now? That they should have stayed where they were and took that bum aaron ross? Come on now, youve never given credit to Tannenbaum once, youre just coming off like an idiot
-
igs,
The Jets thought Green was the no. 1 RB in the draft. That’s why they traded up to get him. If Rex/Tanny are right, then the trade up was a good move. I mean, isn’t it too early to judge Green?
-
Sack, that’s exactly my point. Tanning-Bum giveth and Tanning-Bum taketh away. I haven’t seen the amount of prospects coming out the lower end of the draft as should be for the Jets. Which is why there are depth concerns right now.
You guys answer me this? Can you really say that the Shonn green trade was necessary?
Think about who we have at RB.
Now consider some of the guys tearing up the league right now:
Ryan Grant
Ahmad Bradshaw
Derrick Ward
Marion barber
Fred jackson
Corell Buckhalter, etc.And some of the past greats:
Tiki Barber, Preist Holmes, Terell Davis, etc.
Why do you have to throw away picks to get a RB?
I’m not hating on Tanning-Bum. I’m just keeping it in perspective.
-
JesusRevis,
I say the same thing. Love Revis. Aaron Ross has a ring and went to the playoff last year. Know why? His GM had more picks that contributed. It’s about a system, not a player.
-
SD, my point is that Tanny overvalues specific players and undervalues draft picks. Like I said, I’m not saying he’s a bad GM. But he’s got to show me that he can put a premium on depth developing lower round prospects from the team’s own draft. Then I will say he’s the man.
Kudos on Edwards. i’m happy as a clam right now. We got the QB. We got the WR. We got the defense. I’ll raise a glass to the guy tonight. Nut I’m keeping it all in perspective.
-
Just thinking about something that made me smile,
how does it feel as a Jet fan now to know we can throw a deep ball and…
A) that our QB can get it downfield with some accuracy
B) that the guy catching it is 6-3 220 and runs a 4.4 forty
C)the fact they are either 26 years old or youngerFuture’s so bright, we gotta wear shades
-
With apologies for my tone, can some of you guys count to eleven? We don’t need to count Leon or Keller as the third wide receiver because we have eleven guys on the field, all at the same time. There’s five on the line plus the QB. That never changes. Then In a passing set, we’ve got two wide receivers, usually a tight end and a single running back. That’s only ten. We get eleven. Get it? So there really is a third wide receiver in many formations and he usually plays the slot. Not Keller. Not Leon. Another guy!
-
Probably a good fit for you guys, but beware Braylon can drive you insane. His catching technique is pretty bad, but physically, he is a perfect WR specimen. His biggest problem football-wise is Braylon doesn’t give a ?#@! about anything but Braylon. If he interprets the Jets winning as really important to him, then he’ll play for you. If not, then you’ll see a lot of drops, and ints on balls thrown his way because he can’t be bothered to get back to the ball and break up an int. Braylon can amaze in every way. He has no literally no value in Cleveland, so whatever we got from you is good by me. He might have a lot of value for you guys.
-
Andrew–if hartsock comes in at te, then keller is good option as slot WR. And if TJ–or hopefully Greene–is in backfield, then Leon could be slot WR. I think the idea is to use their unique talents to get mismatches and open space. They might be more productive in different positions than than traditional te or rb.
-
igs,
The Giants won the Super Bowl because of their drafts? Really?!? Their team is a mix of draft picks, UFAs, trades, etc. Plax was on the Super Bowl team, he caught the winning score. Wasn’t he the missing piece? McKenzie, Pierce, Madison, Robbins and Mitchell were all acquired, not drafted and the trade to get Eli was a massive overpay. Those guys all made huge contributions to the Super Bowl team. Also, the Giants’ drafts of late have been mediocre and they kept doubling down on WRs in the hope of getting a Plax replacement…you can’t play all of them. And, it looks, so far, like they made a mistake drafting Nicks over local product Britt and Sintim and Barden are doing nothing, yet.
Good drafts helped them get to the playoff-level, a great playoff run and huge upset got them all rings, but placing the entire credit on their drafts is just not right.
-
SD,
You’re preaching to the choir and you’re not really addressing my point. I assume that most of us here at least know enough about football to understand that you build a team through a balance of those elements. My point is that the balance is missing for the Jets in terms of drafting and developing the later round guys. They lock in on a player and they throw a lot of picks at the rest of the league to get him.
When those corners got drafted, if you asked me – You can have an very good corner, rookies that will contribute across every round of the draft, and a Super Bowl trophy, or you can have a stud CB, a stud LB, a small WR that you’ll trade away in a couple years, a useless lineman, and no playoff appearence? Guess what, I’ll take option A which he smarter GM, Jerry Reese has done.
As far as the Giants WRs. They just took value where it was. Steve Smith is the leading WR in the league right now if I’m not mistakes, either #1 or #2. Mario manningham is a pro-bowler by next year – he was supposed to be the first WR taken that year. Hakeem Nix is already a better WR than ever Jet outside of Edwards and Cotch. Sooooooo, what’s your knock on that?
And the Giants are not trying to replace Plax. They actually are replacing his production without having it all go through one player.
The Eli Manning trade was an Accorsi move and it was horrible, but hey, they did get Eli?
They built through the draft. Adding UDFA, FAs, wire players, etc. But the trick is they never waste draft picks by overvaluing any one player so you’re point doesn’t apply.
The Giants have 15 players in the last 2 drafts. The Jets have 13 players the last 3 drafts. Transversly, the Giants have 2 playoff appearances the past 2 season and the JEts have none.
I think Reeses is a good example for Tanning-Bum to follow.
-
Oh yeah, and out of the 13 players of the past 3 years, 5 are gone. That means 8 players may be making a consistent contribution or still the jury is out on them.
My point in all this is to say that the next 2 drafts, Tanning-Bum has to show that he can make a pick when it’s not a straightforward superstar, but a roll player that can contribute right away while developing. He has to draft for numbers and quality. The Jets lose 2 pick with Edwards so there’s no reason for the guy to be moving around next draft.
-
As I sat home and watched Sanchizes pick 6 against NO, I turned off the TV although I was still taping, and returned to the game later as I saw a little boy lost in the end zone lose the ball and give up another TD. I fell off the Bandwagon. I never watched the tape and didn’t read anything about the game till Tuesday.
And then Wednesday came and Braylon Edwards came. That changed everything. Turncoat that I am, I climbed back on the Jets Bandwagon. I have been screaming for a burner, hoping Clowney was him, but this is the something else we’ve been missing–even if he doesn’t catch a pass– he’ll stretch the defenses and open the run and the other receivers. R-E-S-P-E-C-T! It’s the smoke that clouds the minds of Defensive Coaches.
Send in the Band! I’m back on the Wagon.
-
BTW, every single player from the 2007 Giants draft is still there and contributing. Gotta like those odds.
-
so what igs!!
-
igs,
I just don’t think the Giants drafting has been all that good since 2005. Yes, Smith has been a nice surprise, so far. But, the jury is still way out on Manningham and why add Nicks, Moss and Barden? That’s 5 first day WRs drafted since 2006. Sorry, that’s poor drafting. I could write 1,000 words on all the players the Giants overlooked by drafting so many WRs early and they passed over some much better WRs.
Plus, it’s hard to compare Reese to Tanny. The Giants don’t have an 800 lb gorilla in their division, like the Pats, and the Colts, Steelers and Chargers have been better this decade than any of the Giants’ rivals in the NFC. Plus, the Jets playoff issues can really be summed up by the fact that the Giants have been solid at the QB position and the Jets have not. Tanny made the big move with the Sanchise and his entire career is now linked to that move.
Let’s talk about Tanny v. Reese 3 years from now.
-
Maybe Braylon wasn’t playing good because he wanted to be traded. Let’s see how he works.
-
Sack,
This is a moot argument. The NFC has been by far the toughest and winning-nest division in football the past 3 years. Check the numbers.
As far as picks the giants have kept almost as many players from the 2007 draft (all 7) as the Jets have kept the past 3 years (8). Where’s the argument? I don’t see it.
-
I guess the problem is, like Tanning-Bum, you fcus on a single player so much, you forget about contribution across the entire team.
-
igs,
Boy, you really are a stubborn guy. You’ll go as far as saying that Tannenbaum is a bum? We’ve got one of the most talented teams in the NFL that was built almost entirely by Tannenbaum. He darfts for quality over quantity. What lack of depth are you referring to? Hopefully you realize that every position can’t be addressed in 3 years. When we drafted Shonn Greene, we didn’t know what would happen with LW and TJ, he was insurance against any holdouts by them. A smart move in my book. Shonn Greene will also be the replacement for TJ when we don’t resign him next year. And sorry, but there is a big difference in the talent level between Shonn Greene and Rashan Jennings.
So why don’t you change the perception of yourself and come across as intelligent and drop the Tanning-bum crap.
-
Ramble,
Wow, you come in at the middle of the conversation and start hurling insults at me. What a D-bag you are.
First off, I make fun of everybody’s name; Neon Leon, San Man, Reeses, Man-Genie. Just my thing.Second, if you had actually taken the time to review the entire conversation you would see that I gave Tanning-Bum plenty of praise. But I also noted that I won’t consider him to be a great GM until he starts to exercise some restraint when it comes to the way he runs his drafts.
You may argue that Tanning-Bum has a better eye for individual talent than Reeses. But you can’t deny the fact that Reeses has gotten more players in the last 3 years, more players that stuck in the last 3 years, and more of those players went on to become dominant players in the NFL.
The 7 players that the Giants still have from the 2007 draft is almost as much as the Jets have held onto from the last 3 drafts, which is 8.
Also, in those three drafts, there’s only 1 player you can say is dominant, Darelle Revis, maybe Neon Leon as a return man.
While the Giants have acquired Kenny Phillips, Justin Tuck, Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, and Ahmad Bradshaw – all dominant players.
So while Tanning-Bum has gotten his talent by throwing away picks and focusing on expensive FAs and high draft picks, Reeses has built his championship team through the draft. Guess who has more salary cap space, more playoof appearences, and more Super Bowls?
Finally I will say, as much as I love the Bart Scotts and the Braylon Edwards of the world, if you’re in a position where you HAVE to get a player like that – where it’s not an option to bring a FA in, but you HAVE to get that player, you’re doing something wrong in the draft.
The guy’s done some good stuff, but he’s gotta practice some restraint in the draft. As far as the Giants, it’s not even a fair fight. -
Oh wait, you said 2005, so we can add Bandon jacobs, Corey Webster, Barry Cofield, and Mathias Kiwnuka to that list of dominant players.
-
Igs- I don’t find any of those guys dominant. Good? sure. Dominant no
-
And Mangold may be the best center in the league. David Harris is no slouch either.
-
Kenny Phillips- Career may be done. Heard a rumor.
Kevin Boss vs Keller? are you a heavy drinker? Taking Boss NOOOOOOOOOOO WWWAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY
Aaron Ross shouldn’t even be allowed in the same conversation as Darelle Revis.
Sorry but you have a bad case of rose colored glasses on.
-
That is a pointless argument to get in. We still have a good team even if we traded away a lot of picks for some of them and using a lot of money on some of the others. Im happy where we are at.
Braylon Edwards is a HUGE piece to our Super Bowl Puzzle if he gets back to 2007 form. -
Also are you guys purposely leaving Kerry out….
-
Kevin Boss Vs. Keller?
Boss – 2 playofffs – one Super Bowl
Keller – 0 playoffs, 0 super bowlsIt’s about a team guys, not about a player.
Mangold and Harris I’ll give it too, and D’Brick and Rhodes if you’re going as far back as 2005.
Originally I was focusing on the past 3 years.
Phillips is out the year. Injuries aside he’s a beast. All those guys I named are dominant in their area. So hey, Tanning-Bum’s really gotta start taking a look at what Reese does and following the example is all I’m saying. Stop wasting picks.
And yes it does matter how you build your team when you don’t w and you aint got the salary room to keep players like Neon leon. Yes it does. Everybody can’t cme from the 1st 3 rounds.
-
I’m not a man who loves to trade picks, but Keller is just plan better than Boss. The Giants won the superbowl on the defenses shoulders not Kevin Boss, so ur stat is irrelevant. Antonio Gates doesn’t have a ring, so Boss is better than him?
I like Phillips. Shame he is down. He may be the best player you mentioned.
If you look at the team there are 7 guys we can cut next year and have a good amount of money with minor damage to the team. Woody, Ellis and TJ alone account for around 20 million.
Tannenbaum can manage a cap exceptionally and still create headlines. That’s impressive.
-
JAGG,
You just don’t get it. The defennse didn’t win the SUper Bowl for the Giants. They had a team wth a good balance of stars and role pleyers. Everybody stepped up when they needed to. Derrick Ward’s out for the season? Oh, well here come 7 round draft pick RB Ahmad Bradshaw gashing the defense. That’s how it works, role players.
It’s not about Boss VS Gates. It’s about the Giants VS the Chargers.
You can argue against reality all day if you want. But for me, what makes Tanning Bum a good GM is whether he can be conservative in the next 2 drafts. He’s got a great oppurtunity because the team is set and Rexy can develop late round picks so let’s hope he uses his brain.
-
igs
I thought you guys were arguing about who are the better players? -
I do get it Igs and I think ur heads up Reese’s ….
Half teh players you claimed were dominant wouldn’t even start on the Jets. How is that dominant?
I give Players and The GM that drafted them credit. I would trade a 3rd and 5th pick for Kris Jenkins anyday.
Our roster is stacked. We have RB depth too. You’re not convincing or impressing me with your argument. We just got our full time QB this year. Manning was three or four years in when he won and the trade to get him was atrocious. Not Reese’s fault

Lantern- I thought we were too originally. Then it changed.

igs,
Additionally, you fail to address the points I attcked you over. Instead you continue to kiss Reese’s a$$. Go root for the giants as you always do.

Great analysis, Basset. I totally agree on the run game. Teams have been stacking the line or at least playing much closer to the LOS with their safeties with Sanchez and only one semi-deep threat. Edwards presence, assuming he is a presence and not suspeneded, makes both the passing and just as importantly running games better.
