The Initial Assessment: On the Road Again

We all came crashing back down to Earth after Mark Sanchez turned the ball over four times last Sunday in New Orleans contributing to the Jets first loss of the season but its out of the way and now we can move on. Though there are concerns mounting, the hope is this week that an extra day and some new additions (Pace & Edwards) will rejuvinate Chez and Co.

Can the defense shut down the Wildcat? Will Sanchez have a better offensive outing along with Jones, Washington and perhaps Shonn Greene? How will Braylon Edwards mesh? Will the Jets be able to walk out victorious? All of these questions and more will be answered after this message sponsored by Rex Ryan who decided to go old school this week for us at TJB …

Sorry, that was from his workout tape, the real message is here.

Quarterback: What can I say? Chez was a rookie last week but hopefully he followed his words spoken at last Sunday’s press conference [where he mentioned that the tape from New Orleans would be far more valuable than the first three tapes] and he learned from his mistakes and improved on his techniques. I still expect him to make a few rookie missteps at times through the game but with the help of a few reliable fellows Sanchez has the chance to make up for last weeks misfortune.

Running Backs: Thomas Jones and Leon Washington have been inconsistent to the point where it seems Schottenheimer does not know what to do on offense (i.e. playcalling last week). Shonn Greene provided a much needed spark in New Orleans but after going down with a “tweaked ankle” the spark was doused however with Greene looking healthy again, Thomas Jones may be put on notice (if he hasn’t already) to either get his game together this week or risk the possibility of Greene taking some of the carries.

Wide Receivers: See Bent’s “Offense: Braylon replaces Chansi.”

Tight Ends: I held out some hope but I should have known that Hartsock would return to his quiet status and Keller would follow last week. Not to fear though, Sanchez should throw a lot of passes Keller’s way this week and who knows Ben Hartsock may even see a few himself especially if “Schott” plans to break out those special play packages.

Offensive Line: What happened? The line drifted into diarray and an injury to Damien Woody doesn’t exactly help right now [if Woody is out, Wayne Hunter will get the nod]. Nevertheless, I have faith in the line after all it is Miami but they still need to protect Sanchez and make way for the ball carrier.

Defensive Line: Kris Jenkins along with Douglas, Ellis, Pouha and DeVito should be able to hold down the fort as usual as long as they can keep up with the fast paced offense. One more thing: Where is Pitoitua?

Linebackers: We can all breath a sigh of relief now as Calvin Pace returns to make life difficult for the opponents [see ya later VG]. The addition of Pace comes just in time as the Jets will need help to stop the Wildcat which Miami has become diehard fans of. After hearing reports of Pace embarrassing teammates as usual in practice I don’t expect any less from him on Monday. In addition Bart Scott and David Harris should continue to terrorize offenses in their own special way while Bryan Thomas the “unsung hero” will see some snaps but not nearly as much he has gotten in the past four weeks.

Defensive Backs: Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland will once again sit out and it will be up to Dwight Lowery and Drew Coleman to make sure things remain in order within their respective areas and quite suprisingly they have done a good job so far. Darrelle Revis will be the shutdown corner we look forward to seeing each week while Kerry Rhodes continues to do what he does best (Rhodes had his best game last week with eight tackles along with a broken pass forcing the Saints to settle for a field goal) despite his knee injury. Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard of course will make their respective contributions as well.

Special Teams: Specials Teams was non-existant last week then again the Jets never really got a chance to do much considering the Saints did a good job of holding off Leon Washington and the Jets offense while the Saints did all they could to protect their return man (in fear of repeating in the steps Ryan Mouton no doubt). But I wouldn’t be concerned, I expect Feely to get a good amount of work and hopefully Leon Washington will actually get to take the ball out a few times while Ryan Fowler can hopefully pop Miami’s return man at least once. Oh by the way, Steve Weatherford is still here so he must being doing well.

  1. I think a lot of this game hinges on whether Cotchery plays. I still think we’ll win if he doesn’t, just not quite as confident about it.

  2. Sorry for the re-post but this one is more appropriate on this thread;

    The stats that bother me this week the most;

Miami averages 5.0 yds per carry, Jets allow 4.0.

Jets average 4.0 yds per carry, MIA allows 2.9.

This does not bode well, especially with road grader RT Woody limited or not playing.

Pace, for all the talk about his pass rushing skills, should be a big improvement vs. the run, where Gholston has been exploited at times. With or without the wildcat, they simply need to stop the run and dare the rook to beat them, similar to what the opponents have been doing to the Jets.

On offense, they need to stop the smokescreens, the motion, the razzle dazzle, and just run the damn ball, preferably between the tackles. Impose your will on the defense.

Commit to pounding the rock, even at the expense of a few three and outs, and good things will happen later in the game.

No more third and one pass plays, PLEASE!

  3. Wise Old Jet Fan,

Throw the stats out the window. First, the Fins have not seen a defense like ours. Henne is a dead man. Second, the problem with our running the ball is that, we have not had any misdirection or movement from our backfield. All we have been doing is running up the middle. We need to have better play calling on Offense. We need to get Leon the ball to the outside and in space. We have to use Keller. Hopefully, the addition of Edwards will open things up.

  4. great article about darrelle revis in the daily news today…even though its telling us what we already been knowing about him

  5. OT, but have you guys seen Anderson’s numbers for the Browns today with 4 minutes left in the 4th?

    2/15 for 23 yards and a INT.

    That’s almost criminal

  6. with the those numbers it proves that braylon does make some sort of impact…not sayin anderson would thrown for 300 yds or the browns would of won but i feel i can throw for 23 yds a game in the nfl…but it wont be easy

  7. I’d like to know how many of those yards were after the catch. I bet you could de better, in fact I bet my six year old son could do better.

  8. I expect to see tons of deceptive plays from the phins throughout the game. Lots of trick plays. Lots of unexpected play calls. Misdirections, confusing play actions, and maybe a fake punt/field goal too.

Sparano and the miami coaches should know that henne can’t beat the Jets defense.

I also expect to see lots of intricate blitzes from the phins from Joey Porter, Cameron Wake, and Jason Taylor.

I expect the jets to be down by 10 at halftime, but then I think we’ll muster a successful comeback.

    Prediction:
    21-16 Jets Win

  9. derek anderson finished 2-17 for 23 yards and a pick

how the heck did the browns win this game?!?!?! that has be the worst performance by a qb in a win in the history of the NFL…that bills offense is terrible

  10. OMG!! What the hell are the broncos wearing

  11. Court Jester outfits

  12. The Broncos also look a little like the Swiss Guards at the Vatican.

  13. didnt see any of that brown game…they actually won…bills are horrible and its one less team we gotta worry about

  14. I like the one guy who has the socks twisted like a barber pole.

  15. Rusty, trust me by the time we play them their will be plenty of us whole be worried—it is what we do.

  16. broncos look like burger king employees from 1983…they have a pretty good d i think they can actually beat the pats today…with all the off field stuff during the off season i thought the broncos were done for

  17. i hear you vetjet…at least the first game against them will be at home and hopefully if this keeps up the 2nd time we face them they will be done and no chance of the playoffs in which they might not be going at it 100%

  18. Does anyone know why we don’t play action pass more? We all know teams are stacking the box, so what better way to counter that by freezing the LB’s and Safties and hitting a TE across the middle. But we don’t seem to do that much. Instead we do the empty backfield crap.

  19. not sure why we dont use more playaction…sanchez looks like he got a pretty good playaction move

  20. First of all the Jets played well enough to win, the O did diddly squat, secondly the defense played great. Having said that , the defense will be better with Pace back and I expect to see a 3-4 sack game for the Jets not to mention qb pressures. The offense whould be strong enough to beat Miami. I keep hearing how Miami is going to win the game with ball control. You can’t control the game is your 3 and out. I expect the Jets to continue to be the dominating defense in the league, I think the Ravens miss Ryan now that he’s gone. Our D is the bomb. Jets win 23-6

  21. whats up with tom brady’s hat??

  22. love this edwards trade because maybe now within the next couple of weeks we can finally find out who can be our slot receiver…im guessing smith, clowney, and wright will all be getting looks at this position til one stands out as the best guy…my prediction i really feel wright might win this cause i think hes hungry and was one of sanchezs favorite targets in training camp and preseason

  23. I’m not entirely confident going into this game either. Mark Sanchez is not Peyton Manning and thats the effort that we may need to win. Their running offense is to me #1 in the NFL. They have an underrated O-Line and an underrated run Defense. Let’s hope we win the battle of Field position and time of possession. Shorten the field for Sanchez to make less mistakes.

  24. the only reason im worried about this game is the injury to j-co i know we got braylon but there is no way hes on the same page with this offense yet meaning we are gonna have to rely on clowney smith and wright

  25. denver and the pats goin to ot…hopefully denver can help us out

  26. Lets go Broncos

  27. DENVERR!!!!! yes now how sweet will tomorrow’s W be

  28. Broncos win .Still in 1st place!!!!!

  29. denver really did us a favor and my boy b. marsh went off. (thats who i really wanted but ill give braylon will do)

so wee beat new england head to head and they just lost a afc game making them 3-2 meanwhile we’re sitting at 3-1 and a win tomorrow pushes us to 4-1 and 2-0 in the division. so does this mean we really have a 2 game lead? if im wrong somebody correct me

  30. It’s always a good day when the Pats lose. I love football. Is anybody watching baseball, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!

    Go JETS!!!!!!!!

  31. McDaniels is the anti-Mangini. He took the lessons from Darth Belichick and applied them to his OWN team and OWN personality. He didnt just try to be Belichick. The guy is gonna be a good head coach and Im glad hes out of the division

  32. youngjet1,

    Yes, you’re wrong.

A win tomorrow puts us up 1 game and 3 tiebreakers (head to head, division record, conference record). A loss leaves us tied and up 1 tiebrealer (conference record.).

  33. oops, a loss leaves us up 2 tiebreakers. head to head and conference.

  34. I think this game is huge for us i cant believe Shepard is out again that was his major problem with the eagles he was good when he was out there but he is never out there. I think Lowry has stepped his game up so thats ok. If Cotchery doesnt play well i guess us fans are going to find out what Braylon Edwards we are going to get in that trade. Henne should be running for his life with calvin back.

  35. Too early to look at standings fellas

  36. I think we gut the Phins Monday night.

With Henne hurried and hit and lying face down on the carpet all night, as long as Chez secures the ball, looks the DBs off, and doesn’t try to force the ball onto coverage, this one could be a blowout.

    Jets 24

    Dolphins 6

  37. It crazy how a win tomorrow will actually give us a lil breathing room in first.
Imagine when we beat the Bills next week and hopefully the Titans get their first W against the Pats.

  38. Lets get that W first fellas really hoping keller, leon ,ad tj abuse channing crowder

  39. It’s never too early to look at the standings. Especially considering the good teams the Pats are playing. We need them to lose when they play good teams, because they’ve got a bunch of garbage left on their schedule, and if there’s one thing the Pats always do, it’s beat bad teams.

It is KEY to stay ahead of the Pats in the division. Saying it’s too early to look at the standings is for losing teams.

  40. lets talk senarios in week 11 right now we really need this running game to live up to the ground and pound rex wants. mabey braylon is the answer mabey he isn’t mabey thomas jones lost a step and mabey shotty is just a terrible playcaller when he fully has the riegns.

  41. My god, I can’t wait until it’s 8:30 pm!!! Friggin’ Monday Night Football……I Love It, & I Hate It!!! I mean theres nothing better then that primetime spotlight, when you know the whole country is watching your guys go to battle, a chance to show America that these boys are’nt “The Same Old Jets”……. Man, I can’t friggin’ wait!!! But that’s where the “Hate” enters the picture!!! All day, I sit, & I watch other teams sweat & bleed, & fight for every inch, while, I’m left waiting, wanting, craving for my “Gang Green” fix for the week!!! Needless to say…..8:30 pm can’t get here soon enough!!!
    SQUISH DA’ PHISH!!!!!!!!
