Game Preview: Jets at Dolphins 10/12/2009

by Bassett on October 12th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Here’s a quick preview of some of tonight’s aspects of the Jets at Dolphins game. Add your thoughts in the comments.

When the Jets run the ball …

The Jets have struggled to get a consistent running game going so far this season. Shonn Greene’s injection into the rushing attack last week’s game against the Saints helped, but was short-lived as he went out with an injury. The addition of Braylon Edwards should help the team limit the number of opponents that teams put up front against the rookie QB Mark Sanchez as compared to what they saw last year with veteran gunslinger Brett Favre. A looser front and fewer nine-wide looks from opponents can help make room and put the numbers in the Jets favor.

When the Jets pass the ball …

Dustin Keller could have a very big game. With Braylon Edwards clearing out space for Keller, and Cotchery likely to take attention away from the interior, the Jets could have a big night throwing the ball against this team. Keller has the ability to outjump and muscle the Dolphins Safeties, a big plus for the Jets.

Still, the team is going to have a tough task on their hands protecting Sanchez from one of the best groups of pass rushers in the NFL right now. CLF Newcomer Cameron Wake had a huge game last week against the Bills, expect for the Jets to keep their eye on him. Still, for as impressive as the Dolphins pass rush was against the Bills, that O-Line is Swiss cheese, the Dolphins will have a much tougher task on their hands, especially should Damien Woody play (which is likely).

When the Dolphins run the ball …

WILDCAT! Rex Ryan has proven last year that he can tame the feral feline, but is his personnel up to snuff this year? With the adding of Calvin Pace who will be key to holding Ricky Williams from getting outside the tackles, I’d be much more willing to say yes than two weeks ago.

Keeping the Dolphins to short gains on the ground will be the way that the Jets get the Dolphins into long passing downs, but also how the Dolphins could rope-a-dope the Jets into some Wildcat success. Keying on personnel and making sure that the Jets are aware of who is on the field where and when will keep the Jets in the game. This defense is very flexible, so look for the team to do better against the Wildcat than some other teams have fared.

When the Dolphins pass the ball …

Pressure Chad Henne. Get in his face. keep him guessing, bring players from unaccounted for blitzing spots (like safety or corner). Donald Strickland would be a nice player to have up for the game tonight, but Revis, Sheppard and Lowery should be more than capable of handling the Dolphins receiving corps. Look for the Jets to move Revis around tonight, rather than shadowing him on one player all game.

Is Shepperd going to play? I read he was listed as “doubtful”?

  2. avatar daleinct says:

I’m hoping to see a little bit of Shonn Green…maybe later in the game if we have a lead. Love to see him punish a few db’s.

  3. avatar Ben says:

looks like lito’s gonna miss his 3rd straight. strick is out too.

  4. avatar brian g. says:

This wouldnt be the worst week to have both Sheppard and Strickland out. The Dolphins have the worst WR core in the NFL and we will take out 1 of them with Revis.

I think we will need to suit up more DL and LB’s anyways.

  5. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Ben – thought Lito was 50/50, anything more solid to lead to “looks like he’s out?”

  6. avatar Dolphins fan says:

The dolphins will win this game. The jets aren’t good. They just got lucky and the Dolphins have been unlucky. I predict the Dolphins win 33-3.

  7. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Dolphins fan- Your parents must have dropped you… a lot.

  8. avatar Dolphins fan says:

I think the Dolphins will win this division. the Dolphins would go 12-4 NE 9-7 BUF 8-8 NYJ 5-11.

  9. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Further proof of my earlier hypothesis. Do you also believe the earth to be flat?

  10. avatar GP says:

Dolphins fan’s been drinking a few too many of Jimmy Buffett’s margaritas.

Ahhh Jets on Monday night…boy am I pumped.

  11. avatar Dolphins fan says:

You know the Jets aren’t good they just got lucky and if you were Jets were so good why were they 9-7 last year? And the Dolphins were 11-5.

  12. avatar SuperGrover says:

Dolphins fan…you must have found Rickys stash.

  13. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Epic collapse? Our team got a lot better. Also isn’t the QB who changed your team’s culture on IR somewhere?

Dolphins fan it worries me to think you have a driver’s license, maintain a job, for a single moment recieved an education within thsi country’s borders.

Bill’s 8-8? really? Dolphins 12-4? So you will only lose one more game?

  14. avatar Dolphins fan says:

LOL You can’t answer you’ll just collaspe like last year. remember you beat NE and TEN then fell apart. The same thing will happen.

  15. avatar Dolphins fan says:

How did your team get better? Sanchez yeah a rookie LOL

  16. avatar Dolphins fan says:

You go 9-7 with one of the best QB of all time and you replace him with a rookie. and You tell me your better? you got to be kiding

  17. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Sanchez? You’re a schmuck, but I’ll take him over Henne. How about Scott, and Leonhard. Plus if Braylon Edwards is a bust he is still better than ANY WR on the Dolphins.

    Coaching has also vastly improved.

    Are you ten?

  18. avatar GP says:

I don’t think I would even be able to show my face in public if my team was 2 years removed from a 1-15 season, had Jennifer Lopez’s enormous ass parading around the front office, and counted Ted Ginn and Brian friggin’ Hartline as my starting receivers. The Dolphins haven’t been respectable since Ray Finkle impersonated a female police sergeant and kidnapped Dan Marino.

  19. avatar Row says:

    Ignore the troll.

    also ban his IP.

  20. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Edwards led the league in drop passes. at least our WR catch the ball. Leonhard and Scott are overrated. People think Scott is good beacuse he talks alot.

  21. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Face it the Jets are bad the Phins are good.

  22. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    Watch tonight. Enjoy it.

  23. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

and for the sake of the world please don’t breed.

  24. avatar mole57 says:

    Dolphins troll,
Enjoy Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan and Jimmy Buffett. Don’t you worry that your team’s ownership is banking on non-football-related has-beens to drive interest in your team because the product is the “wildcat”, which has been figured out by 28 of the 32 teams?

  25. avatar Dolphins fan says:

    I will.

  26. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are unstopable thats why we are good best rushing team in the NFL.

  27. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    You’re “good best”? Haha

  28. avatar Dolphins fan says:

You have no chance this game. we will wild cat you all day.

  29. avatar GP says:

I think there are actual dolphins out there who could put up a better argument than this clown.

  30. avatar adornoj1 says:

dolphins fan…your an amusing guy lol. I heard dolphin receivers are smearing peanut butter on their gloves to assist them in the art of ball retrieval

  31. avatar Dolphins fan says:

I love when poeple make fun of grammar because it means I’m right and the can’t say anything else beacuse they know i’m right. keep making me laugh

  32. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

So by your logic Joey Porter is bad too, he also talks alot.

So do you as a matter of fact. Your DB’s cant tackle as evidenced by dallas clark shredding your pass d last time you guys played in primetime.

  33. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

i heard tony sparano is smearing peanut butter on ted ginn’s buttcrack to soften the blows.

  34. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Gp whats wrong with my argument here is the facts MIA 11-5 Jets 9-7 The Jets lost one of the best QB of all time and replaced him with a rookie who turns the ball over like crazy and you expect a better record come on.

  35. avatar adornoj1 says:

lmao @ “Face it the Jets are bad the Phins are good.” Riveting argument phins fan! Why dont you just look at the head to head over the last few years buddy

  36. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

That isn’t grammer. You failed to make a coherent sentence.

You can’t even talk trash well. Tragic

  37. avatar adornoj1 says:

ohhh i see what the problem is Dolphin fan…your newspaper was upside down… ::turns it over for you::

  38. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Joey Porter won a super bowl and was one of the Steelers best players and a reason why they won that year. Bart Scott never won a super bowl and was never one of the best players on the ravens defense.

  39. avatar mole57 says:

Yes, you will “wild cat” us. That’s the only play you run. Maybe after the wild cat has been stuffed, you will try to distract the defense with Mark Anthony’s ass.

  40. avatar Dolphins fan says:

adoronj1 look at last years standings.

  41. avatar adornoj1 says:

Emilio Estevez was listed as Probable for tonights game…should be Henne’s main weapon

  42. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Just a green guy your making fun of how I’m saying something not what I’m saying. That means I’m right

  43. avatar mole57 says:

Look at last year’s standings? Look at THIS year’s standings.

  44. avatar adornoj1 says:

lol porter was sooo important to that Superbowl team, that they let him walk the same year into Free agency. They have a WAYYY better LB at James Harrison, and won another superbowl..porter is a joke and i just feel bad for crowder

  45. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Has anybody looked at last years standings???

  46. avatar JIm G says:

One of the good things about living in South Florida is going to Landfill Stadium and watching the JETS squish the fish!

  47. avatar Dolphins fan says:

This years standings are only four games not the whole year. Remember the jets were 8-3 and in first place. Thats why you can’t judge early on in a season

  48. avatar Dolphins fan says:

Porter is just as good as Harrison.

  49. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I countered what you said and you didn’t respond. I’m convinced my trash can is smarter than you and I feel you insult your team by presenting such a piss poor arguement.

You claim that the wild cat will own us and it is well documented that Rex whipped the Dolphins last year.

Your QB who lead your team to it’s best record of the decade is on IR.

Steelers never tried to re-sign Joey Porter, because even they thought he was overrated.

You’re a waste of my time, but great for a few laughs. I really hope your sterile.

  50. avatar E. Weeks says:

Not quite sure why you are harping over last year standings Dolphins fan. For starters who cares that Miami won the division and went to the playoffs — they still managed to screw that up losing to the Ravens in first round and secondly its 2009 get your head out of the past.

  51. avatar adornoj1 says:

i agree…my co-workers are gathered here chuckling in my cube…thanks Dolfan!

  52. avatar mole57 says:

Your argument (I’ll be kind and say that you actually have one) is that last year will be the same as this year. Is that correct?

So I guess that since the Fins were 1-15 two years ago, so they couldn’t have finished 11-5 last year.

  53. avatar Dolphins fan says:

The ravens stopped the Wild cat not the Jets.Rex Ryan was not on the Jets last year. Pennington is not a big loss Henne is just as good. How do you know the Stelers didn’t resing him beacuse they thought he was overated. Maybe they couldn’t afford to pay him?

  54. avatar mole57 says:

Now I understand why my brother sent his kids to private school after he moved to Miami. (BTW, he’ll be there tonight rooting loudly for the Jets, as will half the stadium — nice home-field advantage you have there.)

  55. avatar Dolphins fan says:

They have the same team as last year. as I said before Pennington is no big loss. They also have Jason Taylor now.

  56. avatar Bart Scott says:

    HOW DARE YOU!

  57. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Dolphins fan is actually right guys. The Dolphins were good last year. The Jets collapsed down the stretch because of our coach.

I’m just gald we are playing with this year’s team, not last year’s, or Pennington would have beaten us again. Henne will be amusing to watch tonight.

Good luck Dolphins fan, I hope you are watching this year’s game.

  58. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Henne is just as good? He has 1 start, a slow release and is a statue. You can’t be this dumb.

The Steelers came out and said he wasn’t worth it and they won the Superbowl last year without him, so how much could he really have meant to the team?

Rex did come to the Jets and the Jets held Drew Brees to 0TDs and 1TD overall.

Didn’t you guys have 44min of possesion againt the league’s other best QB and still lose? Didn’t Peyton have 3TDs that game? in 15 min?

  59. avatar um says:

    you guys are getting trolled.

Dolphins were a 1 hit wonder last year. Gimmicks can only get you so far… they can only hide the short comings of your team for so long.

  60. avatar Dolphins fan says:

I got to leave Lets go Phins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. avatar mole57 says:

    Heading back under your bridge?

  62. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Pennington is no big loss? for YOUR team he is. Chad Henne is a complete unknown right now. How can anyone with any sense say that penningon is no big loss when he was runner up for MVP last year?

  63. avatar AKA Jack says:

    >>You can’t be this dumb.

I disagree. He has made a strong case for being exactly this dumb.

  64. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Dolphins Fan – your blow hole is spouting nonsense!

Don’t you realize last year’s win in the final game was a gift from the team to Chad? Rex wasn’t so charitable when he came to visit you guys the next week, now was he? OOOOOH, he seemed so scared by that wild, wild, wild cat.

Appreciate Jets Mgmt hates the Bellicheat NE Patsies so much that we were willing to give one up for the good of the AFC East, and make you silly phish fans think you actually had a team (with easiest schedule in the league last year)…no wonder SFla education system ranks next to Miss and Ala.

We had an old man who blew out his Bicep on a hit, and then decided his continuous game streak was more important than his team…thank god the EGO has been replaced by the Sanchize. You’re beloved fish will be lucky to go 5-11 this year.

  65. avatar jeffjets12 says:

haha this guys the funniest thing ive seenin a comment sectoin in a while

  66. avatar Ben says:

    @JetsFan4Life:

cimini at the daily news (jets stream) seems pretty confident he will miss it. not much more detail, but he usually is pretty accurate.

  67. avatar john sec.125 says:

if that guy doesn’t epitomize 90% of the miami fans out there, i don’t know who would…….. they are some of the stupidest fans( ooh, ooh, a fish on the helmet!!! i’ll root for them!! ) in all of sports.

  68. avatar chris philly jets fan says:

Miami will start tough, possibly taking an early lead, jets will have it evened up by half, and win going away in the 2nd half. 30 – 13 NYJ tonight ladies and gentlemen, and just so everyone knows, I am going to a bar 6 blocks from citizens bank park during the phils game in denver tonight, and requesting the jets game… gotta have balls to watch em round here, LETS GO JETS BABY!!!

  69. avatar joe sciulllo says:

Jets are a little above average at stopping the run. Miami’s O-line will punish them like they did Indi. The jets have not faced Donald Thomas and Jake Grove on Miami’s line at the same time and they are the differnce. Most are betting with Ny and that is when it goes the other way…..thats how Vegas makes money!

  70. avatar JesusRevis says:

It bothers me that some of you respond to this person. He/She is clearly a child with no knowledge of football. The only way to ban the “trolls” is by not responding to their comments. Especially when they are as pathetic as the ones coming from “Dolphins Fan”. Just ignore people when they do that, its the only way to beat it.

    Lets go Jets baby!

  71. avatar SackDance99 says:

Back to football, isn’t Joey Porter also banged up? Is he out tonight?

  72. avatar brian says:

did anyone ask dolphins fan how according to his argument the dolphins go from 11-5 with pennington to 12-4 with henne?

  73. avatar JesusRevis says:

No Joey Porter would be a huge plus.

If you combined the Jets and the Dolphins into 1 team I believe Joey Porter would be the only phin to crack the starting lineup. True?

  74. avatar brian says:

definitely a huge game tonight. throw out the records when these two teams meet, especially on monday night.

it’s not going to be an easy game for the Jets. they need to protect sanchez and washington needs to get going.

I think it will come down to the last drive with the jets narrowly escaping.

  75. avatar SackDance99 says:

    JR,

I like Langford. Maybe he’d start over Douglas? Also, I’d take Ronnie Brown over Jones (and I’d be tempted to take Ricky over him, too). Besides that, I agree because I would play Porter over BT (but, I’m curious to see what BT does tonight back on the weakside).

  76. avatar JesusRevis says:

Yea I agree, my point was that the Jets are superior in talent to the Dolphins, so a loss is inexcusable.

  77. avatar phxcyots22 says:

Not sure about you guys, but I ate clam chowder for breakfest today in honor of Leon!!!!

  78. avatar J!E!T!S! fan says:

Nothing any miami fan said on here made any sense. Last year was last year. The jets have only allowed 2 touchdowns so far this season on defense. The defense is fierce! Given that the dolphins are the only team to perfect the wildcat, that’s all they have. You cannot win a game without a passing attack. And if any ridiculous dolphins fans want to talk about stats, the last 22 times the jets have played the dolphins, the jets won 17 times, the dolphins have won 11. LET’S GO JETS!

  79. avatar J!E!T!S! fan says:

I’m sorry 5 times. It was 11 times the jets beat the dolphins on MNF

  80. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i think dolphins fan was a jet fan…he was writing nothing to hurtful but if im wrong thas gotta be the biggest moron…maybe just as annoying as those saint fans only because the moronic statements…

  81. avatar rusty sanchez says:

im kinda glad sheppard’s been out…because of his injury we might not have to give up a draft pick this year for him now and its not like lowery hasnt been playing good…i feel strickland is more of a loss and it seems like this ankle problem aint goin away soon

  82. avatar colt fan at least last night $$$$ says:

    20 to 24 jets

  83. avatar E. Weeks says:

According to ESPN, Cotch is expected to play tonight.

  84. avatar joe sciulllo says:

I seem to remember another really good defensive team going to Miami on MNF…the 1985 Chicago Bears and they got their butts whooped…..Jets fans just dont want to accept what is going to happen tonight…..Sanchez is no Peyton Manning and he will look like he did last week……..maybe worse. Dolphins will beat them soundly!!

  85. avatar AKA Jack says:

And this isn’t 1985 and Chad Henne isn’t Dan Marino.

The Dolphins are 1-3 and they have only beaten the worst team in the league. I can accept what will happen. Seems Dolphin fans can’t accept their team is a lot closer to the 1-15 ’07 squad than the team that played the weakest schedule in the league last year and got by with gimmick plays.

You guys talk a lot of smack for a last place team.

  86. avatar jeffjets12 says:

are we gettina an inactives post anytime soon?

  87. avatar hank/naples.fl says:

    Bent:

Great, great game. I’m sorry Pennington is not playing !!. It would have been delicious !!!

Tell Pete 57 that I concede. let me how he wants to hanlde our commitment.

  88. avatar nyjets90 says:

why is Westerman inactive? this kid has got to be in the game he’s a beast.

  89. avatar Brad says:

    Jets tse gehinnom……
