Link: Rex Ryan Humbled .. Yes, You Read That Right

Rex Ryan spoke to the press on a con call today, and he told reporters that he’s still venting over the loss in Miami.

He called it ‘unacceptable’ and ‘a humbling experience’ and said he was ’still mad’ over what had happened. He also said ‘I wasn’t happy with our scout teams,’ believing that the scout-team offense didn’t provide enough of a look at Miami’s tempo in the Wildcat formation.

“The way you improve on game day is to improve on the practice field,” added Ryan, who called the Buffalo game on Sunday a ‘must-win.’

Hmm … well let’s hope that Ryan subscribes to the 24 hour rule. Now it’s time for the team to figure out how they can correct those mistakes, and let’s remember the team is still in first place tied with the (grrrr) New England Patriots at 3-2.

Ryan is right, this Bills game is a pace-setter for the rest of the season. The team rose to the challenge up until they played the Saints, but I didn’t expect a better record for the Jets going into week six when I thought about it over the summer and at this point of the season, it’s just who they’ve beaten so far this year. The Jets have two chances to get right (and healthy) before they take on the Dolphins again in New York in three weeks.

  1. Why hope he has a 24 hour rule? I hope he stays mad till his next win!!

  2. He better be humble. He and Pettine got their asses handed to them by Henne and Henning. They were dominated as much (if not more) than the D players on the field. D was unprepared, to say the least. I can’t believe we let Henne beat us. I never would have thought that would happen with what I thought was a stout, aggressive D. Last night we were anything but – more like the Mangini read n’ react days. URGHHHHHH!

  3. Lets get past is and take out frustration on Buffalo – who always seems to play the Jets tough.

  4. we need sheppard and strickland back asap…

  5. and i can already look to april and say we better draft the best pass rushing/run blocking DE

  6. well for scouting next game, the wildcat is a 3-4 killer. If your going to play that defense against it you will most likly lose the battle. You had Jenkins ,Ellis and the other guy ; / against their line .They cause a bunched line push and the RB creaps behind till one guy gets an openning. after the openning the guys were up the field three/four yards then had room to run or got stopped. Its hit or miss but you always get positive yards.

The jets cant be a running team, we need to be a team that passes when need and runs when it works.

Dont want to be a crybaby but i thought the refs were against us all game. I felt that in crutial plays in the game they were missing calls like Holding on Jenkins.iif your not allowed to make plays then how can you.

  7. I think the D rallies around this… Much like Sanchez rallied around last week. They’ll be crisp and focused during the week, and foaming out of the mouth on Sunday. I’m also putting us down for a win against Miami in three weeks. At home, not in the oppressive heat, mentallly prepared and something prove. Hell part of me still thinks we win that game if they didn’t call the PI on Edwards… We would have scored, we were move the ball well at that point, we score the 7 – they have 2 less minutes and run out of time get and settle for a FG, tie it and flip a coin. Either that or the refs call grounding on Henne on the last drive – I still don’t understand what the hell that was all about.

  8. Zartan, we got every big call. I don’t think that’s where we lost the game. The refs kept us in it actually.

  9. The bills game is a must win but I’m not worried about that. We need to win every game that’s before the bye week to prove werenot the same jets. We already got threw the hardest part of the schedule. We have a chance to become 7-2 before the bye. Get enough rest and close the season strong. If we can beat new england one more time the afc east will be won by the jets

  10. refs defintely missed some holding calls. but we also got an incredibly iffy PI call on the edwards bomb. i thought it was a decently officiated game

  11. I Don’t want Rex to get humble.

What the hell does being humble do for anybody?
Get DETERMINED. Get SMART. Get PREPARED.
Everything else is poppycock and you guys, of all people, should realize it.

  12. No scout team has me and the Jets haven’t faced a RB with my size yet. I am a beast and fall forward after initial contact for at least 3 yards.

  13. Just watched the 4th Q again and, for all the Wildcat talk, it was two 3rd down pass plays by Henne that sealed the win: 3rd and 5 from the 30 to Camarillo, who beat Coleman, and then 3rd and 10 from the 16 to Camarillo again, beating Lowery on a comeback at the 4. Stop either of those it’s field goal, overtime.

  14. yeah usually im quick to give the refs hell but lastnite i felt they were fair…between the wildcat working and marc anthony celebrating in the booth this loss is hard to swallow

  15. Watching Obama from the start of the game to the superbowl atmosphere, it felt like we didn’t have a snowball’s chance.

We just need to get back to basics and we will be fine.

Also I am not betting on my favorite team ever again.

Also would it be wrong to sit TJ for a half just so we could get ahead by say 10 plus by playing Leon and Shonne before we just go 3 and out like we do with TJ?

  16. Lets take it out on the Bills on sunday. If we lose our season might be over

  17. All that is being said can continue being said about the WIldcat and the Jets D collapse. The real story was the play of the Miami Offensive line. They are huge, created a big push, gave plenty of time and were the difference in the game. They were the difference. This game was clearly won in the trenches by the Miami O-line. Period. End of story.

  18. He should be humbled…He got his ass handed to him by D Henning. Our defense was punched in the face by a suspect OL and inexperienced QB. This is where Rex has got to get his head on straight and not get to angry and let it dictate the week. Its a bad loss…every team has them…even his old Raven defense had games like this.

Compose yourself and be a leader Rex… get mad and be angry but get this team ready for Sunday. ASAP!

  19. Man this coach is too freakin emotional..

  20. Like Drew said, every team has losses like this. At least he owned up to it and walked the line last night in the press conf. This Sunday is a big game. The Bills are a mess and an inferior team. Plain and simple, we have to beat the ever-loving piss out of them. We do that and we are right back on track.

They straight up blew the grounding call with Henne, there was no reciever within 20 yards of that throw, they gotta call it both ways after they got Sanchez when Keller was visibly in the area.

  21. I agree w you Drew.. Im not gonna get all worked up over a game.. But He better get these guys up instead of clowinin his boys on Nat TV cuz this was def a lack of preparation for the wildcat.. We looked like a deer in headlights.. Ricky Williams still got it and wth is goin on with oour secondary? Its hard bein a Jet fan folks so some of the knee jerk reactions are only normal when this is what we’ve been a customed to.. I still believe in this team gettin it done but Rex keep your composure man.. All the great ones do… Neva let em c u sweat!! Defense step up for us and lets get ready and beat buffalo like a drum!!! I know we can bounce back wit the rt attitude and preparation!! J> E >T S jets jets jets

  22. i agree with david..there offensive line pushed us around like ragdolls. the fins were alot more physical with us and we cant get a basic pass rush so the few times we sent all out blitzes we got burned. the defense better come prepared sunday otherwise buffalo will slam it down our throat too..buffalo always runs the ball well against us

  23. I saw 2/3 calls that I didn’t understand. Everyone saw Jenkins being held on that one pass and then you can’t call grounding on Sanchez but not on Henne. Ref was afraid to make that call at that point of the game. Still, the PI call was iffy as others have pointed out and the Defense’s inability to gett of the field was the difference, not the Refs.

  24. Lets all take a deep breath – Good things come to thosse who wait. The Jets Played a team that was powerful in areas where we were weak – this happens. The Jets need their fans support at home this Sunday period.

  25. PS IM done with Hollywood Rhodes – Id love Brian Dawkins instead of this candy

  26. anybody know whats up with westerman??is one of the few guys on this team that has a sack and i havent seen much of him since week 2 is he hurt or was he playing that poorly that he hasnt been making the field???

  27. happy that clowney finally made a difference maybe he can work out at as our 3rd receiver…it is so evident that we need a pass rushing de soooo bad ellis is getting old and douglas blows….this what pisses me off about vg he such a waste of a pick he was supposed to be our new young pass rusher but i think he is light years away…its funny how vg aint got a twitter page im sure there would be a lot of negative comments on it

  28. The Dolphins have THE TUNA, the Jets have the Big-Mouthed SHAMU! Henceforth, until he beats Miami, the D-Rex is now the whale SHAMU!! We got rid of the PENGUIN and replaced him with a Big-Mouthed SHAMU!!!!!!!!! Show us or shut up.

Wonder what Cowher is thinking these days?

  29. scjf – If you recall, when he got his sack, it was on a delayed blitz and came about because VG overpowered a double team.

He isn’t active because he has several guys (rightly) ahead of him, but he’s still young. Plenty of time to move up the depth chart over the rest of the season and beyond. He played a little last week, but not enough to draw any conclusions from.

  30. simplysimon2, –
    Thats utterly silly

    Rex is the man

  31. The day after……..and I still feel sick 2 my stomach!!! that’s 2 weeks in a row, we truily should have won!!! In New Orleans, it was Sanchez, and the Offense, but this week, it was completely on our Defense!!! PISS POOR TACKLING……PLAY, AFTER PLAY!!! Which, IMO is way nore disappointing, simply because we’re supposed 2 be relentless on Defense!!! I MEAN…WE NEVER EVEN GOT A HAND ON HENNE….NOT FRIGGIN’ ONCE!!! Oh well, what more can be said??? Maybe in this next game against Buffalo, we’ll be firing on both Offense, & Defense……If not…..It’s gonna be a long, long season…..ONCE AGAIN!!!!

  32. This loss will hurt until we beat the Bills

  33. Pete57:

Good opine: Sorry that we (I) didn’t get to see Penningotn last nite. It would have been perfect for him to have been there.. I am not too sure he woul’ve made those two ropes for strikes in the fourth qtr to pull out the win though.

I see where Payton is playing lightsout and Pennington is out for the season and will not statrt (barring injury to Henne) for Miami ever again :o(

So, how do you want to handle our wager, kill it or consider my loss. It’s your call, sir.

PS. How do you like Pennington’s clone with a BIONIC arm?

  34. LargeBarge,

I feel the frustration brotha. But I wanna see them do that to us TWICE. They added some wrinkles to the Wildcat and Max Protected Henne and out schemed our coaches. But do it again to a Rex Ryan led defense. If they can, then I’ll be the first one to kill Rex, Bart Scott and CO. But you dont win playoff games in the NFL running the Wildcat. There is a reason why the Pats, Colts and Giants dont even run it. You can only run it so many times and do so many things with it, until it just becomes the single wing.

But If nothing else, Sanchez to Edwards is starting to look like a deadly combo for years to come.

  35. How about our players (Scott, Pace, Rhodes) just shut the hell up and play ball. We look so stupid with the comments these guys make. I love them to death, but show some class, kick some ass on the field and let THAT do the talking. Pace in particular comes off like a complete moron after last night.

  36. LOOK FOR PACE TO HAVE AN INSANE GAME SUNDAY

  37. Hey FinFan,

You guys had a good win last night. You outplayed, out-schemed and out-coached the Jets. Congrats. Here is some food for thought.

Number one, get to .500 first. You have Drew Brees and NO to contend with your terrible secondary and then NE after us. Pretty rough 3 game stretch.

Secondly, its getting pretty cold up here, and its only getting colder. Id say in about three weeks it’ll be in the 40’s. Come up here in Nov and try that garbage gimmick stuff TWICE. Granted you outplayed and outcoached Rex and Co. last night. But you guys always win at home in the first 4-6 weeks of the season. Once the temperature drops you guys dont fair so well now do ya? Cant win football games in the cold, thats a problem.

Dont even whine about what could have been if the referee had or hadnt done this or that. If my aunt had b@lls she’d be my uncle. Henne got away with grounding the ball, Will Allen cant cover Braylon Edwards and Jake Grove had Jenkins around the face mask on Ginns TD catch.

Good win last night. But before you start talking like Joey Porter, beat the Saints. Then beat us TWICE. Then beat the Pats like we did. But if you think you are gonna do what you did to our defense up here in Nov, I wouldnt get your hopes up.

The AFC East goes through us because we’ve won more games this year and are in 1st place, plus, we get another crack at you in 3 weeks…READ IT AND WEEP!!!

  38. I hate the freakin Dolphins as much as I do the Patriots but give credit where credit is due. Woulda, coulda, shoulda has been the Jets montra forever. As pissed and as sick as I was/am,I still think this is a different Jets Team. I expected them to be 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 by this point so 3 & 2 is a plus. Let’s see if they jump back against Buffalo.

  39. here”s what i don’t get about teams playing the def against the wildcat:

why do they need deep safeties or coverage on wr’s when ronnie brown or ricky williams take a snap? if the fins don’t have a b on the field, i think defenses could play five DL five LB and one deep safety. really, i would happily risk ronnie brown throwing to a wr or te down field and just play goal line D.

  40. i think if the crowd is anything like the patriot game the bills dont stand a chance…cause if we lose this week your gonna start seeing and hearing the word meltdown in every piece about the jets…i for one cant take that 2 years in a row

  41. Just watched game again on DVR keying in on turning points – all came down to last two minutes on the two third and five’s were Henne made great passes. But, who did they key in on? Yep, Coleman and Lowrey! Absence of Shepard and Strickland were definitely felt y’day. Also, don’t quite understand why on final play Big Jinx wasn’t right over the nose, seems he was slightly off center to the right…anyways, game could’ve went either way and what’s done is done.

Also, to all the TJones bashers, he really didn’t look bad, yeah he’s slower to the line than Leon, but he makes good cuts and picked up solid gains most carries.

  42. Bills don’t even come close to standing a chance. This game will be like when we played the Rams last year, something like 40-17

  43. i wish the nfl would of drug tested ricky nelson i mean ricky williams before last nights game

  44. Rex’s reaction to Monday’s loss is starting to worry me. It’s looking to be more of a meltdown.

You have no hope of besting an opponent unless you feel they have value and strength and learn what that strength is. Then, you begin to figure out how to neutralize that strength, and replace it with your own, until you control your destiny.

Rex seems to be living in a vacuum here…

If that’s how he’s going to proceed, I fear for the rest of the season.

I’ve seen waaaay too much damned losing here since 1961 to watch a talented coach and team sink under a mountain of hubris, tossing the chance for an historic season into the dumpster of bloated ego.

If we do not respect Miami, we cannot respect Buffalo, or the chance that they might beat us, too. If we can’t respect Buffalo, we may not win another game.

This may be one of those crossroad moments good teams face during a season. And it looks like gut-check time is upon us.

  45. I think REX needs to take this team back up to Cortland and get back to where they started at the being of the season…This defense is playing like they won something already instead of scrap’n like their life depended on it…I’m seeing to much Hollywood and not enough Brooklyn in their attitude…What happened to the statement you take a swipe at one of us we’ll take two swipes back at ya…We must of caught the first round K.O. punch last night cause I seen no Rocky Balboa in there eyes at all…We got into a dog fight last night with a Pit Bull and acted like a cha-wow-wa…REX dont crawl into a shell and humble yourself..Get this team pissed off for taking an embarrassing loss and turn buffalo into a big pile of GROUND CHUCK….

  46. The game was won by the Dolphins offensive line play. No pressure on ANY QB in this league leads to losses. I didn’t see real aggressiveness from the Jets D too many times. Also, being down your No. 2 & 3 DBs is hurting us and may account for lack of aggressiveness.

On Rex… humbleness is a good medicine against arrogance. Arrogance will breed failure, but humility will breed preparation and success.

Rex not calling timeouts because he thought his defense would stop them is classic underestimation of your opponent, borne out of arrogance. I hope he learned something from this and doesn’t let us down again with boneheaded coaching moves because of arrogance.

  47. jibes — the media asks them questions and they respond honestly. It’s only been 5 games and already you are pining for the Eric Mangini days of no one being allowed to speak? I don’t see a correlation to not being able to “play ball” when you speak to the media four days before a game. I really hate when fans take out poor play on players not having their head in the game because they are doing things that every player in the league does, like speak to reporters or spend some down time with family or doing some PR work. They all do it and it does not affect the game. These losses happen — remember, every 12 win team last year had four losses, and they each had two straight at one point. These were tough games. If they don’t beat the Bills soundly, I’ll be worried. Every other good team has beaten the bad ones by wide margins this year in the NFL, so I don’t care to see a close game.

  48. And jibes, I’m not saying you claimed the latter about them not playing well because of it, I know you just said shut up and show it on the field, but again, that is Eric Mangini stuff that is out the door this year and everyone loved it for four weeks, but I suppose the honeymoon is over after one loss.

  49. miketaliaferroI :

You are, again, DEAD ON, in your observation and comments on Ryan not respecting the opponent. This stems from his father and it’s the old bully (I mean Buddy) mentality. .

However, one other MAJOR other factor bothered me. It was right after the game and Rex disparages his team by say they ambarrassed him when in fact they had just fought a very phycical, tough battle and the loss decided in the last 6 seconds by four (4) points.

I felt it was a disgrace!!! If you can’t at the very leastc ompliment your opponent at a time like that, keep your mouth shut. But then we all know it’s D-Rex.

  50. here we go again. the games we have to win are in front of us, buff and oak. history shows we are not very good in these situations. lets change that.

  51. greg sec 30…It’s not all of the media questions that gets ridiculous answers. Pace calling Henne a clownand the wildcat a gimmick is asinine when you just got it stuffed down your throat on national TV…Rhodes providing a nickname for the “D” three games into a season was not an answer to a meaningful media question…and Bart Scott’s “How Dare You” post game was also embarassing. I despised Mangini and his cloak and dagger crap, and don’t mind talking before a game, but these comments just make us look stupid. I listened to ESPN radio yesterday and heard whiney fans claiming doom and gloom for our squad which is ridiculous. I’m a 42 year old fan who can call this loss what it is…one loss. A learning experience for the coach and the team. I’d just rather the guys kick ass with class. Win first – talk later.

  52. its walking a fine line when you talk junk. Its like going all-in fult tilt in poker. Sometimes you may make a move and be like I told ya so. Sometimes you are left with egg on your face. This is what you get when you got Rex Ryan. This is how is he is all the time. He doesnt fake the funk. The dude brings it and I respect the hell out of him. No Mangini and “we didnt play complimentary football” or “I have to look at the tape and see what went wrong” BS. However, he gets a shot at redemption in a couple weeks. Before you guys start jumping off the GWB and calling him a disgrace, lets see what he can do when the Phins come up here.

Rex didnt say the team embarrassed him. He said HE was embarrassed and that HE didnt have the team ready to play. He fell on the sword and took responsibility. He stood up like a man and took the fall. Stop putting words in people mouth Hank.

  53. Eddie DiGio – Others…

Classy BLOG to delete me entry :)

Eddie – why would the Fins need to get to .500 to discuss use beating you?

If anyone ran gimmick plays on Monday it was Ryan with the fakes. The Wildcat isn’t a gimmick, i know you, Jet Nation and Calvin pace refuse to belive it.

Funny for you to call out the Fins on winning early and losing late – isn’t that the yearly Jet way of life. Check last year schedule on both teams and i think you all lost the last game of the season at Giant stadum against us.

Whos’ whining about REF calls? Oh yes – most of the Jets fans. Henne didnt ground the ball – he was outside the pocket, it was a roll-out. Look at the game..

I assume you all are ok with Pace calling aHenne a clown? What class – -

Oh, Eddie – the division will go thru you all if and when you ever win another AFC East Division crown. When was the last one?

  54. finfan:

I’ve been a Jets fan since arround ‘67. About 42 years or longer than most of these Jets fans, and lots of WAGONEERS, that LOVEEE the Jets only when they win.

I can tell you from personal experience, that if you hold fast to contradictory opions, they will rile up with vangace and question your intelligenceand character.

I read different blogs every day (Jets (all) Browns (all) and Phis (all)), and I can tell you that Jet fans are unique and separate from all others in that respect , specially when trolling.

  55. Yo Flipper,

I just wrote a well thought-out retort but I dissed Hank so they deleted it.

Ill keep it short and sweet, if the Fish can come up here in a few weeks and do what they did to our defense AGAIN, then I will retire from this blog and go on whatever Dolphins blog you go to and say “the AFC East goes through the Dolphins”. But if that doesnt happen, then you crawl back to whateva rock you came from and leave the Jets Blog to the Jet fans.

Hank-dont ever call me a bandwagon fan or front runner Jet fan. Im on here every week win or lose, unlike you who only puts his two cents in after a Jet failure so you can toot your own horn…
