Bob Glauber wrote an article on the story of the game, and in the heart of his piece, he used some quotes from Jets Linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace.
“You have to be disciplined,” linebacker Bart Scott said of stopping the single-wing Wildcat. “It’s a gimmick offense. It’s pretty much an option type of college offense. You’re just doing it with better players. We have to get answers for it and be better next time.”
..
No one is saying the Jets could have gone through the season with an in-your-face defense at its best every week. But whenever they needed a stop last night, they simply didn’t deliver.
“We just didn’t make a play,” linebacker Calvin Pace said. “One play, and we change the game. Nowhere in the game did we affect the game and make them get away from what they like to do.”
Both Pace and Scott have points, in my estimation.
As far as Scott though, whether it’s a gimmick or not, so too was the spread offense at one time at the pro level. People laughed at the Old Ballcoach’s formations for the Redskins, now they are an NFL standard. The Dolphins are proving the single wing in it’s varied formations to be viable at the professional level, but viable with the right personnel, as Scott astutely points out.
While some of Pace’s other comments smacked of frustration, he makes a great point. One more stop, or just one turnover during the game could have made the difference in the game. The Dolphins took care of business, and the Jets didn’t make it much harder for them to execute their gameplan.

Miami played like it was the playoffs and their season was over if they lost. Because it would have been. The Jets didn’t match the urgency.
Again, too much is made of the Wildcat formation and not enough of the players who run it. When you have 2 extremely athletic and fast 230 pound backs, you find a way to maximize those assets. The fact that a Parcells team is doing whatever’s necessary to get the most out of what he’s got should surprise no one.
Rex didn’t come up with a good enough response to the heavy package that Miami put out there and paid the price. Round one to Sparano and Big Bill.

I don’t understand what talk less has to do with anything….. Say whatever u want I really don’t care just back it up on the field….ok we got beat in week 5…..did u all honestly think we would walk into every game and just dominate every offense?….we are a team growing with a rook qb and a rook coach we will have growing pains and this is one of them….we are still in first place it is only week 6….there is a lot of football and I don’t want our defense to stop the talk, if they do then they will lose that “it” factor that all of u raved about…
Our D, our coach, and our O will be fine…u all say same old jets…well how bout we all stop being the same old jets fans? Maybe that will be a start

They’re both right. Saying its a gimmick offense isn’t necessarily diminishing it. Honestly, when the rest of the NFL tries to run it, thats more gimmicky than anything. The Dolphins are good at running it. They have a strong O-line and solid TE depth to have multiple blockers involved. Add two good RBs on the field at the same time and it is difficult to defend against. Mainly b/c the blocking is so strong. But it is a gimmick offense. They started using it b/c their passing game wasn’t strong enough to beat teams, so they went with confusion and smoke and mirrors. But they combined that with power running and it works. They dominated the Pats last year in the Wildcat’s debut. Rex’s scheme didn’t work again this year b/c the Phins were ready to block it.
There were multiple 3rd downs in the 4th quarter and several 3rd and longs. One stop, and its a different game. But thats easy to say.

Ed L You said it best, Stop all the negative BS.
We will end up 6-2 with the bye coming in 3 weeks.
We needed to get Humbled & go back to work!!!!!!!!!
-
that’s the problem. they didn’t stop any of the 3rd downs in the fourth quarter. that’s inexcusable for a pressure defense.
-
I’m really starting to dislike Sparano too. He reminds me of Bob Hoskins. But he just gives me a smug-belichiky vibe.
What did people think of Josh McDaniel’s post-win celebration the other night? certainly unusual. I liked it though.

Ok john I understand thatbut our d has been close to perfect the first 4 games one hiccup and u want them all to shut up stop being what they are now (confident and outspoken) no just no….they need to stay where they are with there confidence n swagger if they don’t then they are not the real deal…

I honestly don’t think our defense was all that bad as the Miami offense was that good. I still believe our defense is one of the bests in the league. Let’s review what happened, they ESTABLISHED their league leading running game and killed us with creativeity and kept it evolving the entire game. Here’s 2 TEs and 4 RBs! Here’s Pat White. Here’s a Henne to Ginn bomb. Here’s a wildcat pass. some of it is kinda lucky – that 50+ screen happned to be called when he sent the kitchen sink. It wasn’t something they audibled into… they called it… they knew we blitzed alot. Luck that they called it then but it was a good call knowing we blitz like madman.
Not to mention Henne was really good especially in the 4th. Ronnie Brown was phenomenal.
No one can call our defense overrated or bad, because of this one game, against a phenomal offensive performance. Weeks 1-4 weren’t outliers. It’s still the same defense. The same one who beat the snot out of Hou, NE, Ten , and NO.

I’m upset that we lost this game but I think it is time we all reevaluate the Dolphins. They did win the division last year and they have a dynamic running game. Nevertheless, I think we are way way better than what we showed last night. This was a must win, season saving win for the Dolphins. Going 1-4 and losing at home on a Monday night game is a major major let down for an organization. They HAD to avoid that. We did not match their intensity last night. That being said, we had an almost non-existent defense and our offense and special teams had us in the lead with one drive left in the game. In the long run, its a good thing that our defense got a reality check because now both sides of the ball have been humbled and we can actually start grinding games out without expectations or a sense of entitlement. I hate to compare, but the Giants were about ready to fire Coughlin after a quarter of the season the year they won the super bowl. That adversity early on in the season clearly helped them gel and get hot at the end. I think fans have been humbled as well. I can’t explain how I feel today but I can tell you that nothing would make me happier than to rebound from this and get hot as we fight for a playoff spot. I lost respect for out opponents after we started off so hot. Damn.. what a let down last night…

i’ll be there as usual sunday. believe me, if that d doesn’t come to play, they will hear it, no matter what they did the first four games.
-
john sec.125, me too… btw im in sec127, howdy neighbor
-
John I wish I could be right there next to ya doin the same

Great post NJets. The Jets D did many things last night that had not happened this season. Arm tackles, letting a WR get deep and allowing the QB to be comfortable in the pocket. I’m not off the bandwagon. I think the defense is too good and Rex too smart to allow a breakdown like this again. 3 winnable games are ahead and let’s see how the D responds.
-
i felt the d went on a good roll after miami’s opening drive til about 5 mins left in the 3rd qtr…i think it was the o-line playing better and all the 3 and outs our offense had in the 3rd qtr that made our d implode in the last 20 mins of the game…the bad thing about this loss it makes the next 3 games a must win now
-
I agree with you, I think people get a little to caught up in “the sky is falling” mentality. We lost to a team who runs the ball very well, at home, on Monday night. The Jets are still tied for the lead in the AFC East with 3 winnable games before their bye. The Defense needs to re-group and learn from their mistakes. We can’t expect the Jets to win every game.
-
Just read Cobbs is out for the season and R Williams “tweaked” an ankle. I don’t wish injuries on anyone, but I’ve been saying that Miami’s O involves a lot of contact on their RBs. I’d be surprised to see both Williams and Brown make it through 16 games. Without either one of those players their Wildcat is a lot less formidable.

Thanks Sack… its almost therapeutic at this point to talk about how we might actually still be good. I was there last night… it was rough to have them win on the last series like that because the walk out of the stadium was that much worse…all these drunk guys in your face spitting nonsense…
I agree, weird, uncharacteristic arm tackles last night. Revis getting beat… just did not match their intensity. That being said… if we are 6-2 going into our bye, we can really make a splash as we gear up for the playoff push. Ive seen way too many teams be good early in the season. Im looking forward to seeing if we can get hot late in the season. We have rookies in important leadership roles (including head coach). Everyone is going to make mistakes. You have idiots like Mike Francesca spending hours of their show talking about how Rex should shut up because the defense stunk and he didn’t use his time outs. The time outs are not why we lost that game, so to focus on that is just a waste of time. Lets try and get smarter as a team and as an organization. The “same old jets” thing isnt going to make us smarter… we are clearly different.
-
the sky might not be falling, but it would have been a hell of a lot brighter if we pulled out that game. for all we have been through for forty years and as recent as the collapse last year, our frustration is warranted.
-
NJets, I listened to Francessa today and I said the same thing. Hes an arrogant prick if you ask me, and hes never played a sport in his life. I tried calling up during my lunch break, but couldnt wait on hold that long. The time outs had no effect on the game
-
i loved our improvement on offense and i will take a loss anyday to see that kind of improvement. the defense had a bad game SO WHAT. i think as our offense improves we will furthur solidify ourselves as afc champs.
-
kenb, get ready for a lot of obnoxious miami fans in three weeks.
-
JesusRevis… thank god youre on board with that… hes such an ass. The only effect it had on the game was that we might of had 20 seconds more or something to throw it up to Braylon or something, but thats just stretching it. Hes just harping on the timeout thing because he doesnt like how Rex talks.
-
Exactly. turning mountains into mole hills because he doesnt like Rex.
-
The timeouts definaty mattered. It’s a bad sign, Herman Edwards would have known to take the freaking timeouts.
On a side note, nice to finally see Clowney in the field. He’s GOTTA be our number three WR.
-
Francesca’s best friend is Parcells for those that don’t know. They both race horses together and were close friends since the days with the Giants. He is always quick to hop on the negative wagon against the Jets. Dont take what he says seriously. The Jets have a great Defense who didn’t show up for 1 game. This isnt the 2007 Pats – Lets cut them some slack. Not many have overcome this wildcat. Rex is a damn good coach and I feel real proud to have him then 90% of the coaches in this league. Francesca does the same stuff with the Mets btw.

http://www.newyorkyankeesnews.com/colin815/weblog/8592/the-jets-will-only-fly-if-their-offensiv.html
Jets need to get their offensive line playing to their capabilities…
A strong running game will help all areas including the defense….
That’s the most pressing need at this point.

the answer is to talk less, admit you got beat, and MAKE PLAYS. next time.
