Defensive Analysis: Whose Fault Was It?

A little film study can do a world of good.  Especially, when it comes to giving credit where it’s due.  Yet, on defense, there isn’t much credit to go around.  But, Kris Jenkins was exceptional, again, and David Harris played very well.  Shaun Ellis and Marques Douglas didn’t embarrass themselves either.  Still, this loss has to hang to some extent, not on the Jets’ defense, but on the Dolphins offense, which out-executed the men in green.  In the end, no matter what the film shows, we didn’t give them the game, they took it.

But, some players ought to be called out for their real roles.

Kerry Rhodes tooketh, and he gaveth away.  He had a few stellar plays but was the principal villain in the Ted Ginn post.  Revis appears to see Rhodes coming over, and to release Ginn.   It should be noted that making Ted Ginn look good is a cause for immediate removal from the Pro Bowl ballot.  The other safety, Jimmy Leonhard made a play or two but whiffed on a critical third down tackle in the fourth quarter (not so much his fault as Calvin Pace let Ricky Williams run right past him).

Howard Green played poorly early, and was pulled for most of the rest of the game.  Of the two outside backers, Brian Thomas had a so-so game making two strong plays on sweeps, yet losing contain on two wildcat snaps that each went around his edge for 10+ yards and first downs.

There were two players on defense who contributed more than any others to the defeat.   Calvin Pace played atrociously in the first quarter and in the fourth quarter, where the Fins did almost all their scoring.  He had repeated problems holding the edge and was slow to play off blocks.  He got almost no pass rush from either side.

The other culprit was, surprisingly, Bart Scott, who had easily his worst game as a Jet.   The principal problem was gap discipline (which was stressed by every defensive pundit leading up to the game as an essential part of playing the wildcat).  Time and time again (on at least four wildcat plays), Scott followed David Harris into his gap, rather than holding his own.  He was repeatedly trapped there, vainly reaching out to a runner who had cut back into his lane.  He was also absent on pass coverage.  He whiffed on Ricky Williams screen, in the first quarter, where he was the defense’s only option (they were blitzing) and Williams broke the play for big yardage.   He was also late covering Fasano on the fourth quarter touchdown.

The good thing is, these problems are correctable.   Pace did improve his play in the middle of the game so I am inclined to attribute his problems to the adjustment to the speed of the game and his ring rust.  In Scott’s case, his major issue appeared to be over-reaching.  I think he is so anxious for this team to have a top-tier defense, that he thinks he must carry the defense on his back.  Almost all of his errors were over committing.  Let’s hope this game will encourage him to relax and let the other parts of the defense catch up.  It’s worth remembering this was only their fifth game together.

  1. Not surprised Scott was the culprit here. Ideally against the wildcat, the DT’s will eat up some blockers, the ends will contain and turn the play back inside, and the backers gobble up the RB’s. The LB’s appeared to be out of position often – I think they played too downhill trying to make the play in the backfield which made it easier for Miami’s OLine to get the the second level and trap them. The entire team needs to step up next time and try to make the routine play – not the spectacular play.

  2. Good point on the time spent together. In the past, it’s taken 2-3 years before Jet defenders really gell when a new system is instituted. I’m still encouraged on how well they’ve played up to this point and I can’t see a performance like this one happen again. If it does, at least the offense and special teams has shown the ability to pick up the D.

  3. IF THERE IS SOMEONE AT FAULT THAT WOULD B E THE BIG FISH. BILL PARCELLS HIMSELF. ITS DIFFICULT TO BEAT ONE COACH BUT TWO COACHES. THE BIG CAJUNA DOES IT AGAIN!!!

  4. Scott did get owned, but I believe we stomp the wildcat out next go round.

Go Jets make T.O.’s life hell on Sunday.

    Go JETS!!!!!!

  5. I didn’t see a lot of over agressiveness, although Scott jumping into Harris’s gap could easily qualify. There was a lot of planned agressiveness that just didn’t work out. On Ricky Williams big screen play on the first or second series, the scheme left Bart Scott alone to cover Ricky out of the backfield and he just flat out missed the tackle. They also missed some plays late in the game out of heat and fatigue. They became somewhat tentative as they became tired in the fourth quarter. If this game’s in the Meadowlands, it may have had a different ending.

  6. Really strong points about Scott and Pace. They were really the only guys in the front seven hurting the defense badly, because I never felt like their offensive line beat us so badly that their were wide open holes. The holes created had players assigned to them who were out of position or missed tackles.

  7. Only Jenkins, Revis and Harris played well on Defense. The Defensive ends and OLBs were clueless and played terrible. And why Drew Coleman is still on the team has me baffled. Does he realize a DB actually has to cover a WR And Hollywood should learn how to play football instead of telling us how good he is. Bart Scott should worry about playing Defense instead of worrying about whether Rush Limbaugh owns an NFL team. I want you to play excellent football and not give me your biased political views. Overall it looked like the same old JETS showed up on Monday night.

  8. Not that I’m a defensive expert, but it seems to me to beat an old time offense (wildcat was actually in vogue in the 1930’s), you need an old time defense. I say you play Miami with 5 defensive lineman, all head up on the O lineman. 2 linebackers (Harris and Scott) and 4 DB’s. You could also switch out a safety (Leonard) for an extra backer (Murrell). Simply, you do not let any of the O lineman get to the linebackers. The D lineman hold their ground, and the linebackers run to the ball carrier. It may sound simplistic but I think it would stop the wildcat cold.

There would be pressure on the DB’s if they passed out of the formation, but Revis is fine and you give Lito help with the safety.

  9. I take full responsibility for the loss at Miami. I should have had the team better prepared, I’m sorry.

  10. After watching the replay of the game I was willing to give Harris (who consistently makes the right play and is starting to get alot of attention by OL) Jenkins who at times was a force and maybe Revis some credit.

Everybody else was a non factor. Rhodes did make a “then” game saving tackle on 2nd and goal. Alot of people think Rhodes can be sof tbut he shed the FB block and made a great play of Brown.

B Scott was a mess. It seemed as if the Dolphins were paying attention to Harris and then letting Scott screw up. My buddy was at the game and said the same thing during halftime.

When our defense plays a game on national TV and wants to send a message and they dont get a single knowdown on inexperienced QB or force a TO????Then the whole defense gets an F….including the D and HC

  11. The problem isnt our defense….we got outcoached and we couldnt figure out how to rattle this QB becasue of the wildcat.

The only thing that gives me some relief is I dont think our D can play any worse and they couldnt have played any better on offense and they won the game on the last play of the game to win.

Can they repeat this masterpiece in a few weeks in Jersey? I would probably say no….

  12. Just to chime in on something that has been irking me post the Fins game. Everyone was touting Revis as a top 3 shutdown corner. Ted Ginn Jr. makes a play and now everyone is doubting Revis is as good as they thought.

The Ginn play wasn’t on Revis that was all Rhodes. I think and hope that the team bounces back and goes on a run.

  13. It was a zone. Why are idiots doubting him?

  14. one game doesn’t a defense make. this game was mainly about the jets being way to sure of themselves coming into the game and taking the dolphins too lightly. sure they had one loss, but it was easy to pin that one on sanchez. the saints loss didn’t really deflate the rest of the team, which was riding high.

you know the fins have been seething since that playoff embarrassment against rex ryan’s defense and have had this game marked on the calendar ever since he became coach. jets got complacent figuring they had the wildcat D perfected from last year. the fins gameplaned against it and smoked it. plus the fins were hungry for respect. i can’t blame them. i watched the ESPN pregame show and came away thinking i was watching SNY or something. EVERY story was about the jets.

monday night’s game certainly sucked but let’s not blow it out of proportion. the jets were simply outcoached and outplayed. it happens. i’ll tell you one thing, they will be highly motived now for this sunday.

  15. we need a pass rusher. i think we should give JAMAAL WESTERMAN a chance i think he’s going to be a great player. he already has one sack on limited playing time. GIVE HIM SOME MORE PLAYING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO JETS!!!!!

  16. @ Green Lantern

Its the sports media industry. One person says something and everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

Ray Lucas said something to this degree: He’s shutdown 3 top WRs in the first 3 weeks and cant make a play against Ted Ginn Jr.?

I wanted to wrong Ray’s neck for saying that.

One other thing, Calvin Pace really needs to shut up about the Wildcat formation. The Jets were outplayed physically by the Fins and they all need to be humble about that. Recognize your errors and correct them, Guys.

Lets make TO cry on Sunday!!!

  17. I agree EpidmikE We were overpowered and looked to be gassed early. Things that better change if we want a top defense.

Glad to see the Clown did well though and of course Braylon.

  18. When you cant get off the field on 3rd down and the opposing team puts together double digit scoring drives in the 4th quarter….you should be gassed

  19. During the preseason, I worried that Rex Ryan’s practices were too chill and that his players wouldn’t be conditioned well enough by the end of the year. I hope I was just being stupidly paranoid.

  20. i think it was the fact that the jets offense scored so quickly and the dolphins offense had half quarter drives.

means the jets were still in the game but the defense was still on for more time. i dont know how the game actually broke down, maybe the teams were even on playing time, but by my estimate the dolphins wore out the jets defense just by the amount of lengthy drives they had.

bills do not have the wildcat. far from it, they have a bruiser and another runner who is containable. lets hope the jets get a nice comfortable win to silence the critics.

  21. I think that Pace was very rusty. He whiffed on a bunch of tackles that he normally makes. Hopefully, he is getting back in the flow.

The Fins, and Henne, had a dream game. They were ready for the Jets game plan. Let’s give them credit and then crush them at our house.

Brown and Williams are exceptional backs that are extremely hard for anyone to bring down. They deserve a great deal of credit and respect.

If we had three minutes left on that clock — we win that game. As good as their offense was and as bad as our defense was.

  22. THE JETS QUIT ON ME LAST MONDAY NIGHT FOR THE LAST TIME, SO I AM FINALLY QUITTING ON THE JETS
    By The Ed(itor)

Last Monday night, the JETS had a huge game with the Miami Dolphins. A win would propel the JETS into 1st place in the AFC East and give the Fish a 1-4 record. JETS fans were worried that their Offense would score enough points for the JETS to win. But surely the JETS Defense would show up and dominate the Dolphins running game and make Miami one dimensional. Thus ensuring a JETS win. But instead, the “Same Old Loser JETS” showed up on Monday night. The Defense never showed up and thus turned a sure win into another typical loss by this sorry franchise. And possibly ruining this season for all JETS fans.

I have been a long suffering JETS fan for about 40 years. I watched their Super Bowl victory in 1969 and became a full fledged fan in the mid 1970’s. I became a season ticket holder in 1978. Thus I have been going to games and watching the JETS mostly lose for a lot of years. I have thousands of hours invested in this team by watching them on TV or attending their games. And for what?? I could have spent those hours volunteering at a non-profit and would be more fulfilled. The JETS leave you with that empty helpless feeling every year. But I kept on coming back with the hope that they would produce a winning product on the field and eventually get back to the Super Bowl. I even lobbied for the original and only Boss, George Steinbrenner to take over ownership of the team. But he was much too smart to take on this losing franchise.

After their initial success in 1969, the JETS have never been to the Super Bowl again. This will be the 40th year of JETS breaking my heart and I am fed up with their inconsistent and sometimes lackadaisical play of so called professional football players.

This year started with optimism with the hiring of Rex Ryan. But things went quickly down the hill as Woody The Weasel announced exorbitant PSL fees for the right to purchase tickets to his new stadium which none of the JETS fans wanted. Woody wanted the new stadium so he could personally earn an additional $75 million a year. Woody didn’t care about the JETS long suffering fans. All he wanted to do was line his pockets with more cash. So despite being a season ticket holder for 30 years, I either had to pay his exorbitant PSL fees which they had the audacity to call an investment or be relegated to the upper deck. Now the upper deck would be fine in good weather, but in bad weather it would be better to stay at home. And of course there were the two worthless so called exhibition games you had to pay full price for. Woody, because of greed, did not build a dome on his stadium. At $300 million, Woody could have paid for the dome in 4 years. But Woody opted for cash in his pocket instead of convenience of his fans. At last look, even Jerry Jones build a dome on his new stadium.

Then there was the move to New Jersey which included state of the art practice facilities. But Woody didn’t build any stands and instead of training in New Jersey, he sent the team to up state New York. I was planning on taking my grand kids to see the JETS in Florham Park, but instead that turned into a FloP.

Monday’s night’s game was the last straw for me. You can only take so much from an owner who doesn’t care about the team’s long term fans and the players who take the money and don’t show up to play. So after 30 years as a season ticket holder, I am quitting the JETS before they have another opportunity to quit on their fans and me.

  23. Hey Editor…beat it !

  24. The Dolphins got the ball with 7:58 left in the third quarter trailing 13-10. From that point on, the Jets had three possessions: 2:00, 1:24, and 1:43. That’s 5 minutes and 7 seconds of the final 22 minutes and 58 seconds. The rest of the time, the defense was on the field.

  25. new head coach, rookie qb, new defense..3-2 record and in first place..not so bad is it?…i would have jumped at that at the beginning of the season..edwards will be huge as he learns the offense..5-3, probably 6-2 at halfway point would be great..they should only get better..everyone get off the ledge..playoffs are in the future

  26. Ed,

Take a deep breath. You are a Jet fan. You are not going to become a Giant fan or a Steeler fan. You are a Jet fan.

Is Woody a waste of life? Yes.

Does it suck that the Jets play in Giants Stadium in New Jersey? Yup.

Has the cost of going to a game, parking, and eating, skyrocketed out of control? Absolutely.

Do we have a spirited new Head Coach, an exciting young QB with all the potential in the world, a brand new 6′3″ receiver for him to throw deep to, a young running back who (once he gets healthy) will tear up the league, and a host of very talented core players? Damn Right!

Suck it up and stop complaining!

  27. Kerry Rhodes made a nice stop on Ronnie Brown, but for a guy who can’t stop talking about how good he is, allowing that TD by Ginn is unforgivable. Overall, I am pretty damn disappointed with Kerry’s performance the last two seasons. I thought this year he was going to be all over the field making plays? Heck, that’s what he’s told us repeatedly! Maybe he was too busy posting something funny on Twitter like “At Miami gme it is hot n herre LOL!” rather than paying attention to what Revis was doing. Cheap shot? Absolutely. Deserved? No doubt about it. Come on Kerry! You’re better than this!!

  28. The Ed, cheer up it will get better. It could be worse, like watching the Tennessee Volunteers play in college football. Kiffin is a fraud who puts forrest gump ie… Jonathan Cromton on the field each week at QB. It costs $80 a ticket for the games and they want you to give a donation ie…PSL to get the seats. They got lucky and beat Georgia, but will get killed by Alabama. I still pull for them , but its rough.

The Jets are on the right track and will give Buffalo a thumping and Miami in 3 weeks will be like return of the Jedi.

    Ronnie Brown going Down!!!!!!!!!Like Cobbs.

  29. Hey ED(Itor):

I know exactly how you feel and like you, I learned my lesson about 20 years ago. I got fed up with the coach changes, moving the team, losing, lack of vision etc, etc, etc. Just like you, I decided to quit on the Jets, not the team mind you, but the ownership that is only in for the money. Know what I did? I stopped patronizing them. I gave back, not sold, my deluxe season package in th Loge 45yd line with ALL the frills, stopped buying anything Jets, even stopped buying Hess gasoline.

But I never left the Jets, Just cant. And why should I?
Why should I deprive myself of the axcitement, pleasure, fun of rooting for a sports team, my home team, just because of an owner that owns the team just to make $$$$.

I realized that I didn’t have to deprive myself of the enjoyment of rooting for MY TEAM (not a transient owner’s) my sports team. The only thing I needed to do was to JUST STOP GIVING HIM MY $$$$$.

  30. Ed(itor)

One more thing. You are one of a few, a handfull of TJB fans that offered his view ( often contrasting to mine and others) in a very respectfull, classy manner. So, stick arround, this blog needs more fans like yourself.

  31. Why dont you start your own website Hank

  32. Ed(itor), do hang around, since you speak for many long-time fans who are sick and tired of rooting for the most dysfunctional team in all of sport. But who — as Hank/Naples stated well — can’t stop ourselves.

Rex is demanding that we stop saying it’s the SOJ. He comes here from another town and a slew of other teams, cannot even bring himself to mean “Jets” whenever he says “we” or “I,” assumes anyone cares what he did with other teams and somehow assumes his name means “King” in NYC, too. Sorry, bub.

It’s not even November fer crissakes, and we’re watching you get outclassed (which happens to everybody at some point), then watch you absolutely blow up and turn classless before you can get out of the woodshed? Sorry, Rex. We’ve lost mightily over the years, yes, but we’ve always held onto our dignity, and at least attempted to hang onto being classy. We’ve taken our poundings and our broken hearts, and showed up, ready to go the next week, the next year. I wasn’t embarrassed by the game — we got beat. Big deal. Tuesday made me embarrassed to be a Jets fan. Even Kotite couldn’t do that.

After Monday’s game — and mostly, after Monday’s embarrassing aftermath — you’re clearly on Coach Watch.

    Who are you, really, Rex?

You had our confidence. You’ve lost it. You’ll just have to earn it back.

Tuna? Or Kotite? Which way will you go?

You have a talented, exciting scheme, yes. But you cannot demand that NFL offenses simply stand there and let you hit them. They’re trying just as hard to beat your brains in as you are to beat in theirs. Your system will work well with every passing-oriented team in the NFL. But it won’t work on Miami — who haven’t been able to field an NFL-caliber passing attack for years. So, Tuna sees what lemons he’s got, makes lemonade and creates a running team. Big deal. He then seizes on an idea from an asst. coach, and they’re off to the races. And smacks the NFL in the face. It’s been in all the papers.

We lost Monday’s game on the previous Wednesday, when you somehow missed what the world already knew you’d be seeing at gametime. I’ve seen few teams so ill-prepared to play an NFL game. All you gave these guys was swagger. And the Same Old Scheme — which anyone could have told you was vulnerable to this type of attack. A few new assignments would have helped. And a few new wrinkles, designed to defeat the other guy’s new wrinkles, would have been nice, too.

This is an extremely talented Jets football team. It should provide the type of excitement everyone on here is lusting for. But we face two major challenges:

The coach and players had it right in training camp. The talking brought an entirely new confidence to this empty Hess truck of a team. It was fun and exciting; it was great to piss off the rest of America for once. The ongoing defense of their talking was that it would force them all to step up and do the walking since they knew their yakking clearly put them on the map and on the line, and they didn’t want to embarrass themselves out there. Absolutely correct. Four weeks in: so far, so good. Amazing, even. Week 5: Oops, guess what they forgot to pack into their wheely bags? Maybe Rex was worried about catching the plane, but someone should have checked that they had all their equipment. They left all their “walk” back in Florham Park. Instead of worrying about having each other’s backs, players should have worried about having their own gaps.

The other is, Rex has to understand, this is New York. Yes, he certainly did give us the best July and August sideshow we’ve seen in these parts since Weeb or Tuna. And he did a wonderful impression of the Tuna for a few weeks.

But, you want NY? Well, baby, you GOT NY! Rex doesn’t seem to understand yet that there’s a full week between games in the NFL. Now, maybe in the Clevelands or Baltimores or Arizonas of America, folks wake up Saturday and dream of victory on Sunday. In NY this is 24/7, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And loud. So, to pull a Kotite, and to be so thoroughly unprepared for what any fan on the couch could tell you was coming at you, is borderline lunacy. Of course you’re going to be hammered by fans all week afterward. Just say, “My bad,” and move on. We don’t need King Lear.

There is only one man who can dispel the spectre of SOJ. That’s Rex. And THAT can only be done with “walk.” “Talk” is just the sideshow.

To boast about what you’re “going to do to Buffalo, boy” — is pretty hollow. The cows are clearly out of the barn. Buffalo is tailor-made for your system, so stomping on them or other offenses in the league is a given. No big surprise there.

No, we want to see if you can play chess with the masters, or not. Your test will be when Miami and their different system comes to town. Then, we’ll see if you’ve learned anything. Assume for argument sake that Tuna will assume you’ll make all the needed adjustments, and will adjust his attack further. It’ll be fun to see if you’re able to adjust to Tuna’s adjustments, so that we might have a chance in that game — which looks doubtful from the evidence of the moment, I’m afraid.

Yes Rex, it is and will be Same Old Jets until you make it otherwise. We dearly hope and pray you do. You’ve embarrassed us once; grow up, and don’t do it again.

  33. miketaliaferro:

Know what? You’re sooo freeking right, it disgusting !!

I’ve only read half, and I’m saving the second part after lunch so, I can digest it better. You column, that is.

  34. Wow, Mike. Well thought out post that makes a lot of solid points. And I disagree with almost all of them.

“cannot even bring himself to mean “Jets” whenever he says “we” or “I,” assumes anyone cares what he did with other teams”

How can you infer the meaning behind him saying “we”? Who else would he be talking about? Him, Buddy and Rob? I’m pretty sure he’s referring to his team. And clearly people care about what he has done in the past, otherwise he wouldn’t be here.

“We’ve lost mightily over the years, yes, but we’ve always held onto our dignity,”

As a life-long Jets fan, how can you say we’ve always kept our dignity. I love this team. I really do. But even I can’t say we haven’t been a running joke in this league for long stretches. Kotite and his 1-15 season couldn’t embarrass you, but Rex saying he is taking this loss personally, rips into his defense and vows to not let it happen again embarrasses you?

“After Monday’s game — and mostly, after Monday’s embarrassing aftermath — you’re clearly on Coach Watch.”

REALLY!? This might be the most absurd of all your comments. We’re 3-2 and in first in the AFC East. We’ve had a tough schedule to this point, and before week one we all said we’d be thrilled being 2-2 after the first four weeks. How is Rex on Coach Watch, as you put it?

“Your system will work well with every passing-oriented team in the NFL. But it won’t work on Miami — who haven’t been able to field an NFL-caliber passing attack for years.”

Hmm…I’ve killed my fair share of brain cells over the years….but didn’t Rex’s system absolutely decimate the Dolphins in the playoffs last year? That happened right? I’m not delirious, am I?

“And the Same Old Scheme — which anyone could have told you was vulnerable to this type of attack.”

What? I’m pretty sure this is the exact opposite as our previous scheme, which was read-and-react.

“Rex doesn’t seem to understand yet that there’s a full week between games in the NFL. Now, maybe in the Clevelands or Baltimores or Arizonas of America, folks wake up Saturday and dream of victory on Sunday. In NY this is 24/7, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And loud.”

Rex has been around football his entire life. In big markets, in small ones. He lives the game of football. You think he wasn’t thinking about the game last Wednesday? Must be why when the team got back to Florham Park before dawn on Tuesday morning Rex stayed at the facility watching every play of the game over and over without ever returning home. Yeah, definitely doesn’t live football 24/7.

“To boast about what you’re “going to do to Buffalo, boy” — is pretty hollow. The cows are clearly out of the barn. Buffalo is tailor-made for your system, so stomping on them or other offenses in the league is a given. No big surprise there.”

Why is it hollow? We’re division rivals. We hate each other. We should want to stomp the crap out of them. Good teams kick the tar out of bad teams. Would you rather win 24-3 of 17-13? I’ll go with the former. And nothing in this league is a given (other than Peyton Manning being the best QB and the Raiders being awful) which is why he changes his blitz packages on a week-to-week basis to keep opposing teams uneasy.

“Yes Rex, it is and will be Same Old Jets until you make it otherwise. We dearly hope and pray you do. You’ve embarrassed us once; grow up, and don’t do it again.”

Rex has been like this since day one. You can’t pick and choose when you’re embarrassed by his brash speech. He is loud and obnoxious and that’s why most of us love him. Grow up? This is his game. This is the way Rex’s Jets will behave and act. So either deal with it or turn off the TV for the next (hopefully) decade or so.

  35. miket,

Wow, we’re indicting a guy who is 3-2 in his first full season as a head coach? A coach who immediately manned up and took personal responsibility for the loss? Also, that he lost this round in the chess game against Miami was a bit of a surprise to him, which he acknowledged. He DID stop the Wildcat twice last season with Baltimore, including humiliating the Fins in the playoffs. That Rex and his defense (led by Bart Scott and Leonhard, who were both a part of the Wildcat dismantling last year) were caught off-guard was disappointing to EVERYONE, players included.

Plus, I maintain that it wasn’t the Wildcat that killed the Jets, it was Henne’s passing, including the pass on 3rd and 10 to Camarillo from the 30 to the 4 yard line. That was the killer. There wasn’t much film on Henne, who made all the right plays. So, over-confidence coupled with an unknown quantity resulted in a blowout? No, it wasn’t a blowout, it was a 4 point loss in a road game against a hated divisional rival playing for its season on national TV. The “same old jets” would’ve gotten blown out and embarassed on national TV. Instead, the US was treated to a terrific game and the coming out party for two young QBs who could end up dueling for AFC East supremacy for the next decade.

If the Fins come up here and win, then let’s get on Rex for his defense’s failure to make adjustments or if the Jets lose to the Bills or Raiders, then you can make the (incredibly unfair) Kotite comparisons. But, throwing Rex under the bus for a narrow loss, on the road, to last year’s AFC East Champion, c’mon give me a break!

  36. Brendan…

I’m with you…I love how supposed Jet fan quitters are coming to explain why they are quitting on the Jets on a jetsblog. Hilarious. Rex Ryan doesn’t have to prove anything right now…he has already changed the culture, he has already surpassed expectations (NO ONE expected us to win all three of those first three games). Rex Ryan doesn’t miss tackles. Rex Ryan doesn’t get 2 yard per carry. The same old jets is a myth. We aren’t the only team that hasn’t won in 40 years. We have the most solid Jets team I have ever seen (I wasn’t born when they last won). To throw this team away right now is a waste because we will be good for the next 10 years. I’m amazed at these reactions. To be upset is fine… to quit??? That doesn’t sound like the “same old jets” to me, that sounds like the “same old jets fans”. The team has changed, but the fans haven’t evolved at all. Its about time we get over the Miami game and support this team, because this is the best shot we’ve had in a long long time.

  37. I hope you guys quit on the Jets. That way I can come to this website without having to listen to your constant whining. Rex on the hot seat 5 games into the season when the Jets are 3-2? Thats pathetic.

  38. Weiss, I did not watch the tape as you did and perhaps I would see something different if I did, but I keyed on the D Line push on almost every play.

What I noticed at the time was Jenkins, when in the game, was a monster, but everyone else consistantly getting blown off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they held a bit and ended up being in on a play, but it was almost always two to three yards downfield from the line of scimmage.

Did not matter what formation the Fins were playing, their offensivie line simply was better than the Jets front 7, and I do not see that changing in the next meeting.

Yes Scott, as I pointed out rigth after the game, is losing his gap while apparently trying to do too much and I guess that is correctable and perhaps Pace will be better with some games under his belt, but maybe not.

  39. BUDDY BOY is so pathetic…….

Green got pushed off the line repeatedly on the first series, but he was replaced through most of the rest of the game. Ellis and Douglas stood their ground pretty much. DeVito was too easily slid down the LOS and Pouha was a little susceptible to this also, although neither was pushed off the LOS consistently. It really wasn’t line play, though, that hurt. It was the consistent failure to fill the gaps by the linebackers across the whole line. It’s got to be a well oiled machine. four linebackers, two setting the edges, containing the play inside, and two filling the two gaps left by the three linemen. Unless all four assignments are discharged, there’ll be a hole and Miami has the backs to run through holes.

Pace will certainly play better in the next meeting and I believe Scott will be more disciplined since he wlill have seen film of the cutbacks through his lane. I also think rex will play his safeties on the line in the traditional 46 more often. This worked but they inexplicably abandoned it late. The Fins really don’t have any wide receivers that scare you and Strickland should be back by then. With some effort, too, the offense ought to be more dominant, assuming Cotchery gets well and Braylon Edwards gets to know the offense better.

  41. I’d bet lunch the Miketaliaferro and hank/Naples are the same person.

To say that Rex is on coach watch is complete nonsense! We lost a game, did anyone think we were going 15-1? I’ll be happy with 11-5 or 10-6, so get ready for 3 or 4 more losses. Rex will change the culture of the Jets, its just not going to happen in the first 5 games of his tenure. I’m not even looking to this season for anything real productive this year; I think next year will be the real test. Next year should see us make a quantum leap in winning.

I think you are losing your mind……

  43. aren’t fonzie and hank the same person too?

  44. No, hank, fonzie and mike are not the same person.

We do check for that and discourage it, so we’d prefer if anyone posting under multiple names (yes, I know who you are) would stop.

As for quitting the jets after they lost inside the last ten seconds to the defending division champs on the road in a year when many experts felt they’d finish last, that’s a pretty bizarre straw to break the camel’s back after some of the crap I’ve seen just since the mid eighties…I’m sure if you wanted to quit you’d just quit whereas if you wanted attention you’d announce it on a blog.

  45. I’m sure it’s more out of frustration than actually really wanting to leave the team.

  46. ramble914:

I’d acept the lunch bet, but I really can’t afford to put on any more weight.

However, I sincerely appreciate the compliment of thinking my style of writing is the same as Mike T’s. I think he is a great, great poster and always on point.

No, I never met Mike T, and Fonzie is my son, away at college.

  47. Bent:

Saying that….”As for quitting the jets after they lost inside the last ten seconds to the defending division champs on the road……” suppurts Mike T’s and our argument that Rex did not show any class when his first words on national TV were that he was “embarrassed” by his defense.

Like you implied, embarrassed after his team was leading and only lost a HARD fought game in the last .06 seconds? C’mon, at least give some credit to thewiner. You have to admit he WAS classless.

  48. When Bill Parcells lost a game as Jets’ coach, he reported to the media that he was physically ill and yes, embarassed. Are the rules different for proven winners and for rookie head coaches? If it was Mangini, he would have talked about “consistency in all three phases.” That made ME sick.

One question. What could Rex Ryan have said you would

  49. One question. What could Rex Ryan have said you would NOT have criticized?

  50. Andrew:

You have to take everything that is said within context of what was said referencing the moment.

I can not believe Parcells woul.ve said tht after his team just lost A HARD FOUGHT GAME by four points in the last -06 seconds. That moment, It just doesn’t merit that arrogance, sorry !!!

I think, if he can’t at least congratulate the winner or say something diplomatic, you should just , like Big Jenk said, keep your mouth shut and wait ’till you’re NOT PO’d.

  51. Different strokes for different folks. People have their own notions of how a coach should speak, behave, react, etc. If you’re a fan of the way Mangini operated, Rex Ryan will likely irritate you and vice versa. If you loved Tony Dungy’s approach, you probably weren’t a fan of Mike Ditka’s. They both won Superbowls. Personally, I’m not too hung up on style. I can appreciate different methods if they lead to wins. After 40 plus years of my dysfunctional relationship with this team I just want results. Five games is way too small a sample to determine if Rex Ryan’s coaching stye is going to be successful. I’m encouraged enough by what I’ve seen so far, in spite of some rookie HC growing pains, to give him the benefit of the doubt. Curious to see how he prepares and gets the team to respond vs. Buffalo.

  52. I was excited by Mangini that first year. I defended him and said that he had earned one more chance at coaching. But, bottom line, the guy couldn’t deliver. Still, even though I had doubts, I kept faith with the guy.

If you’re gonna bail on this coach after a 3-2 start and some very promising play, then you’re a faithless jerk and good riddance to you. This coach and this team don’t owe you a damn thing except their best effort.

I watched Namath play Unitas in person. So what? Do these players and this coach owe me more becuase I was a fan in 1969? Bull!

I’ve still got excitement and enthusiasm after forty years. If you don’t, anymore, go to the website of your new team and write some upbeat, hopeful trash for your new friends. I don’t need or want your epitaph. I’m a Jet fan, first, last and always. If you’re not, don’t waste my time.

  53. Andew:

Aside from your eloquent way of telling some one to go fork-off, what would you say to your fighter that was ill prepared by you but nonetheless fought a great fight but was knocked out in the last minute of the last round? Would you tell the world that he embarrassed you?
