Look Who’s the Team’s New Receiver?
Randy Lange wrote on Twitter this morning that it looks like there’s a new receiver for the Jets … can you guess who?
New roster out shows Danny Woodhead with a new uni #, 83. He’s still on practice squad but working today at WR. More from Rex later.
Many of you have suggested this, and to be honest, I’ve been doubtful of whether or not this would work. Here’s what I will say. It’s clear that the organization likes Woodhead as a person and as a player because of his guts and the work ethic he demonstrates.
That said, this pretty much shows to me that the Jets don’t think he can be an NFL running back. He’s a great player in space and he had some flashes in the preseason, but against starters or second stringers, he’d be better served in space than between the tackles. If he’s going to be a receiver though, again the size is the issue. The biggest thing that he’s going to face is his height. It’s less important as a running back, but as a wide receiver, even a slot receiver, 5-8 will be a hard target to hit.
Thanks to Mike D. for the heads up.

it would be great to see him on the field. if he can learn to run routes, he could be effective in the slot. we already know he can catch the ball and is very quick.
height is less of an issue to me. he is not an outside receiver or a redzone target. wes welker is 5-9.
Beat me to it, Brian. And if Welker is a true 5′9″ I’ll eat my hat.
Very interesting. You gotta just love the kid and anyway to possibly get another playmaker on the field, why not give it a try?
Well with Stuckey gone we do not have a true slot receiver so I guess it makes sense to try woodhead there a…la….welker.
Catching slants and screens being small can be an advantage.
maybe giving him #80 would create a little buzz…. but i doubt they’re giving that number out any time soon.
Biggest difference between Welker and Woodhead is Welker has been a WR since high school……I dont think Woodhead has every lined up as a WR in his life.
He is probably just giving the defense a look at what R Parrish would look like on Sunday. A small fast bubble screen WR…
Woodhead is not a WR guys….come on
probably right that it’s just a practice squad thing for the week, but he doesnt have to be a true wr. he has to be able to catch the ball.
you can slot him out wide, you can line him up in the backfield, you can have edwards, 2 te’s and woodhead and run it, you can have jones, richardson and woodhead in the backfield, you can do all sorts of stuff. its intriguing.
Welker is practically the same size, I love this move. Hope he can contribute by the end of the season.
Yeah, I’m 99% sure that it’s just this week’s scout team assignment and that they won’t stop thinking of him as a running back any time soon.
If he does a good job though, it might change their view of his usefulness if he displays extra versatility.
I know everyone is all of the sudden saying woodhead is 5′8″ but I clearly remember when he joined the team he was listed as 5′6″….I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here!!! With that said, the kid has tremendous speed and heart, why not give it a shot!
Would much prefer Leon in the slot. Leon is listed at 5′8″ and looks taller than Woodhead on the sidelines.
Lee Evans, also listed at 5′9″, is #83 on BUF.
With everyone banged up they probably just need someone healthy to play Evans for the scout team.
I love the idea of Woodhead in the slot. Imagine Leon and Woodhead on the field at the same time, along with Edwards, Cotchery and Keller. Also, if there is an injury to Edwards, Cotch, or Clown, Woodhead would make a much better slot receiver than Brad Smith. I don’t think he will do any damage at WR this year, but next year is a real possibility. He has Welker size, is quick, and has great hands so I don’t see why he couldn’t be a good slot receive in the future.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually give him some burn at WR. He’s got that quickness, in and out of cuts, that makes slot receivers so valuable. It’s what made Marvin Harrison a household name. Not blinding speed (which Woodhead does have, don’t get me wrong) but speed coming in and out of cuts. That’s how you take a 3 yard quick slant and turn it into a 13 yard first down on a one step drop.
I like this move. worth a shot.
If he has hands and can make cuts running routes like he does when carrying the ball he can actually be a good slot WR.
Yeah this is a good move. Cotch will def. be out two games, thats how those hammy injuries are and we shouldnt even need him for the next two games. Adding this kid, who has a chance to be special, it’s a low risk move. Let him line up a few times and lets see what happens. This could be another gem a-la Wayne Chrebet.
What happened to Jamaal Westerman?
ITs just math.
Cotch and Smith did not practice.
Edwards and Clown are with the main team today with probably Wright in the slot.
So Henry plays Owens on the scout team, someone needs to play Evans, may as well be Woodhead since he resemble from a size perspective.
Do not read anything into this except they are short (no pun) of recievers right now.
“Imagine Leon and Woodhead on the field at the same time”
I’d rather not.
i like the pun lol
I’d like to imagine Leon on the field as the #1 RB…hopefully one day…as a jet.
i guess though, if he is working as a receiver to emulate roscoe parrish, why even bother to change his number … it’s changed on the Jets website too.
i get the sense that maybe with jerricho getting injured and that they need some more receivers than runner right now, it’s more telling than just a one week thing.
so bassett ur saying that wes welker is a hard target to hit cause he is 5′8 also yet he has the most receptions or top five in receptions the last two yrs i think making danny a reciever is a great idea and it should work out for us in the near future if he is still with the team
i think they are serious about getting him looks at receiver. rex stated so at his presser today.
it is obvious he likes the kid, but with TJ, LW and Greene ahead of him at RB, he has virtually no chance to see the field.
with injuries to JC and Brad Smith, receivers are obviosuly really thin. why not give him a shot? height is a non-issue
Here is a quote from Rex Ryan:
“He could be a slot receiver,” said Ryan. “Sometimes you stumble into it, but he did a great job of being Wes Welker (Patriots) when we were preparing for New England.” …
Aka Drew and others:
The other difference between Woodhead and Welker is that Welker is the best slot WR in the NFL and has been for the past three years while Woodhead is a RB. It is crazy to think that Woodhead could even approach Welker’s skill or achievement in less than a couple of full seasons.
