Who could fill in for J-Cotch?

It seems that Jerricho Cotchery who has been battling a hammy injury will take a seat against the Bills (even if he doesn’t his participation will be limited) and while we are all wondering who will be able to step up and take the reigns (i.e. Mr. August, Brad “Butterfingers” Smith or Wallace Wright), PFT says that Danny Woodhead could see some time as he has “impressed” at his new position.
Practice squad running back Danny Woodhead, who became a PFT favorite during training camp, is learning wide receiver. He could play the slot Sunday against Buffalo.
Woodhead impressed the Jets while pretending to be Wes Welker on the scout team before they played the Patriots. In the process, Woodhead may have earned a role as Ryan’s version of Troy Brown.
Obviously the Jets want to get Danny Woodhead involved somehow because of his ability to make plays and it seems that he has been doing so at wide receiver as of late. Though he has made impressions as a running back the position is filled (of course the inconsistency might drive “Schott” to use Danny at some point). Needless to say this is an interesting turn of events for the little guy but my issue is his height, how effective will he be against a usually tall secondary for opposing defenses? If Cotch hits the bench we might soon find out.

Plenty of Clowney and Keller. That should give anyone fits.
Nice i like to hear this..If danny is a quarter of what chrebret was our WR staff would be awesome….Edwards, Cotch, Danny, Clowney…Nice!!
i love woodhead…but leon could do anything he could do 100% better…
Line up Shone Greene and Thomas Jones in the backfield with leon as WR…
how about that stuff?
The forecast is for rain, so I doubt there’s any chance that Cotchery plays with a bad a hammy in slick conditions. Let the Woodhead experiment begin.
Woodhead has better hands and is faster than Leon (though not as explosive). We use Leon in the backfield and Woodhead would be used in the slot, so he wouldn’t be taking reps away from Leon.
I think Danny brings a different aspect to the game compared to leon… Hes got heart and performs great evertime hes ever givin the opportunity (College and preseason) So to say Leon can do everything 100% beter than danny is ignorant, Because danny hast been givin the opportunity to perform In the regular season to compare him to leon. PLEASE dont judge him on his height, weight, and color of his skin Because I think he can do certain things BEter then leon givin the chance.
this could be what he needs. the ability to make plays in space. Welker is 5′9, Woodhead about 5′5.
This could be something to keep an eye on. One more guy who can make a play isn’t a bad thing.
I agree with dylan
Mikeyyy…i wouldn’t go so far as to say ignorant…I am 5′ 9″ and played fullback / tailback in high school and college…as i said i love Leon and if you want to talk about HEART and performing…i will still say Leon can do anything better than Danny…look at the college film etc…i am all for danny getting his shot but LEON is a FAR better football player and i will take him in any situation over danny
my opinion but not an ignorant one my brotha!
Oh yeah…have you played football before?
Danny Woodhead could turn into an excellent slot reciever. I can see him performing a Wes Welker type role. Although I am definitely not saying he will have anywhere near the production of Welker who in opinion is an unbelievable player.
Give Woodhead a shot, he will prove to be explosive.
L7 wienie……..Actually!!! I currently live in Tampa FL and I play defensive back @ USF…..Im just sick of people pre-judging athletes on just the way they look (happens to me allllll the time)…Every chance danny has been givin he preforms at a high level…Leon is great but I certainly believe that danny can do certain things that leon cannot…If danny is givin the chance I guarantee he will succeed at a high level…and yes you are ignorant, as is everyone else who wants to judge Danny on anything besides his performance in football.. Stick to watchin the sandlot BROTHAA
Mikeyy, no offense dude but shouldn’t you be on the field right now? Cincinnati is beating USF right now with 6 minutes left in the fourth.
Well, I guess the Bills are the equivalent of pre-season 3rd-stringers, so Danny should do just fine against them.
We need all hands on deck at WR until Cotch is 100% (considering Smith is likely out too), so I’m all for this.
I really can’t see Danny being very productive at wide receiver, unless defenses assign linebackers to cover him.
Dan in OK
Lmfao Bro!!!!!!! Hey Mikeyy, How does it feel 2 be exposed as a FRAUD!!!
I really like the idea of Woodhead in the slot!!! Maybe it’s just me, but I love players that, on every single play, they give 110%!!! They play every play, like it’s they’re last!!! I mean, think about it people….Think about how much talent never gets the opportunity 2 show the world that they belong in the N.F.L., that they’re the next great talent!!! I don’t know…maybe I’m wrong, maybe he’ll suck big floppy donkey dong, but who knows unless he’s given a legitimate shot at it!!! All I know for sure is this kid plays with a ton of heart, and he really loves the game & those are the kinda of players I want on this team!!!
J-E-T-S, JETS,JETS,JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mikeyy………..FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!
Send in THE CLOWN, send in Li’l Woody. Play all our young high cards and let the good times roll. And a pinch of Westerman. Empty the freakin closet. I’m hungry for that winning feeling!
No matter if he’s called on or not…. I like throwing the idea in the Bills defensive coordinator’s head on simply the possibility of having to worry about a Wes Welker type of threat. Keep em guessin.
I called giving Woodhead a chance at WR 2 months ago, great move Rex.
Go Jets beat Bluffalo.
Here are the official combine heights (ie accurate direct comparison).
Woodhead 5′7″ and 5/8
Welker 5′8″ and 3/4
So, Danny is 1 and 1/8 inches shorter.
If he’s going to play Sunday, they’d need to activate him first (and cut someone else).
thatd be pretty cool to see woodhead out there in any position id like to see him on a reverse or wr screen. aaaaaaand schot has nothing to do with this cuz this is a good idea and schot is an idiot so its imposible
The big question will be Woodhead’s durability..Can he go over the middle and take the pounding by a safety or linebacker…Skill set he does have but for how many plays can he take the pounding in the NFL…
HAHA Mikey…Good stuff!
hopefully sanchez can get him the ball seems like hes been overthrowin hiis receivers recently
One thing I have learned is that people who say they played high school and college usually played high school. Those who played high school, college and a little semi-pro usually played high school and college. Etc.
But besides that, I can never understand why playing sports qualifies you to judge anything more than those who watched. Look at all the ex-athletes that are terrible judges of talent. Often times, watching instead of playing gives people an edge on judging talent from off the field.
I think the only way we will know if Woodhead is the next Chrebet is to give him a shot—and I think this week is the best week to try.
ganggreen,
I would think he could take hits from DB’s (mostly) and LB’s…he is a RB after all.
The guy is actually about 10 lbs heavier than Welker (wikipedia) – Did you see the smacks to the head he was taking in the Eagles preseason game? Woodhead seems like a pretty durable guy. I hope he gets an opportunity
As much as the defense let us down last week I am confident they will bounce back on Sunday with a big effort.
As to Cotch…. This brings up my real fear for Sunday. The weather is going to be a factor. Its not a shock that Sanchez struggled with the wet ball against Tenn and now its going to 30° colder for a kid who never plays in cold weather….and now without his most consistent WR. Not so good
Brad Smith (while at times I question his roster spot) has made a few plays this year. He is on this team for this reason. He has to step up and make plays as Edwards will have coverage rolled towards him all game.
And maybe Sanchez could remember that Keller is the guy wearing #81 that is just waiting to humilate LB’s.
I also our first real taste of S Greene this Sunday. Cold, Rain and smash mouth War Machine
the next Wayne Chrebet.. Go Danny GO!!
I know everyone is in love with D Woodhead but the guy has never played WR and now is going to be Wes Welker (who has played WR since HS) becasue he is the same size?
The guy should not even be lined up as anything other than a special teams guy or occasional RB. This is not the time to start experimenting with PS players at new positions.
I like the kid but he was undrafted at his best position and is now going to solve our problem at WR?? A little bit of a reach guys…..
i like the idea, and this is a good week to try it…..edwards, the clown, jco, woodhead, brad smith and the 3 backs…AND keller….by midseason we should start doing some serious scoring
Brandon- understandily so but as a running back he has the ball handed to him as a receiver not so…on the inside slant route where he has to catch the ball as a LB or Safety is putting the crosshairs on him will he be able to take the abuse…Running backs get low and try to square their pads on a defender as a receiver in the slot many times you dont get that opportunity and are left victim to a defender come’n at ya with a full head of steam…I’m not doubting his play making ability I’m doubting the frame he carries it on…
Supposedly his hands are phenomenal, and he’s very quick, if he’s one half of Welker, why not? If no CoCo or Brad Smith on Sunday, maybe Cole will be released and Danny activated, now that Lito is healthy.
Haha defensive back for USF…yep, and I’m currently the starting quarterback at Florida. Nice try, Mikeyy.
You’ve got to send in the Clown here, folks. We’re potentially sitting on a gold mine with this guy’s speed. Playing a team like the Bills gives us a little breathing room to give a guy like Clowney some decent looks, but let’s not go crazy and toss Woodhead out there just yet. Just cause the guy looks and plays like Welker on the scout team doesn’t mean he can contribute like Welker does for NE. That system greatly benefits Welker’s skill set, as well as his intelligence. I’m not sure that Woodhead would fit that way for us…at least not immediately.
Finally some talk about Danny Boy!!!! The thing about Danny is that he’s willing to help his team in ANY way that he can!! If he gets approached to attempt WR, he would say “Where is the playbook so I can learn this new position!” And if this rumor IS true, the Jets coaching staff must’ve seem something that makes them believe that Danny CAN be valuable to the team. All of you doubters are NOT coaches or NFL talent scouts, that’s for sure!!! GO DANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s funny the current defensive back from USF was posting while USF was playing cincy…I guess college doesn’t have the internet media rules that the NFL does during games.
Woodhead,
Correct, all the doubters aren’t coaches or talent scouts, but neither are the supporters. The only thing that can prove Danny is an NFL caliber player is to see him play. I like the kid, he’s a feel-good story, works his butt off, is a coaches dream, etc. but his size is a legitimate concern. He has that home run ability and if he can make it at WR we have multiple guys who can take a 2 yard catch and take it 40, 50, 60+ yards (Leon, Clowney, Woodhead…even Braylon and B.Smith are on the fringe of that big play speed)
Is he any smaller than Wayne Chrebet or Jimmy Leonard?
By the way in addition to over 1,100 carries in college, here’s Woodhead’s numbers as a receiver out of the backfield:
44 games 119 receptions 1,388 yards 11.7 avg 32.3 YPG 8 TDs
He’s two inches shorter than Chrebet and 3/4 of an inch shorter than Leonhard, but he’s 15-20 pounds bigger than both.
I don’t think he’s going to solve any problems, but if he gets a chance and makes a play or two, then great. If he doesn’t then what have they lost? I don’t think we should be restricted to only adding players to the roster that have a realistic chance of being Wes Welker.
If he wasn’t good enough to make the roster at RB, his natural position, then how is he going to be on the roster as a WR?
I am all for adding players that can make plays to our team especially when we have guys like Cotch and maybe B Smith go down
I just am really confused by the lack of common sense when it comes to Danny Woodhead. Comparing him to Cherbet and Welker are almost insane.
The kid is a tough hard working easy to root for player. The problem is he was undrafted at his best position and now has played 2 weeks at WR in practice and the fans are so excited that he is a difference maker? Let alone Cherbet or Welker? Seriously??
There is a much better chance that he is in the slot and runs the wrong route or bobbles a pass that leads to a turnover than to this being a success this Sunday. this si what happens when you learn a new position on the fly in the NFL. We have seen this before…its called Brad Smith and he has 4 years trying
I hate to the “that” guy who throws cold water on everyones Woodhead = success story dream.
If he does well I was wrong and will be thriled about it
Hopefully he won’t bobble a pass as he’s supposed to have great hands. Running a bad route seems more likely.
Bent – is he really 2 inches shorter than Chrebet? I remember always hearing that Chrebet’s height was inflated to 5′10″ and that he was really a 1/2″ or so shorter. Maybe the same is true for Woodhead.
“If he wasn’t good enough to make the roster at RB, his natural position, then how is he going to be on the roster as a WR?”
We have 3 roster spots for running backs and 3 healthy running backs. No room.
We have 5 or 6 roster spots for wide receivers and 3 healthy wide receivers. Bodies urgently required.
It may not be a full time thing, but as short-term emergency cover there is some logic to it. In the event that he does well, then maybe they will look to develop that aspect of his game (and I am talking longer term), but right now they are just considering their options in a short week.
Drew – I think you’re over-reacting. People are rooting for him, but not many seriously expect him to be as successful as those guys.
The combine heights were 5′7″ 5/8 for Woodhead and 5′8″ 3/8 for Leonhard. Unfortunately, I don’t think Chrebet went to the combine, so there is no reliable accurate comparison. If you think Chrebet was closer to 5′9″ then maybe Danny is just over an inch shorter than him. Bear in mind that Chrebet was a rookie over a decade ago and players these days are generally a little bigger though.
Bent
I am more reacting to the love affair for the kid coming out of preseason. I am sure you remember.
Again I want the kid to play well i just think some fans are a little dramtic in what they think this kid can do. I just think this game is so big and we need to win it badly. If Woodhead is thrown into a postion to make a play and screws up….I might have a heart attack….lol
Playing the slot is not easy. Things happen alot faster than coming out of the backfield.
There was a definitely a big love affair with Danny Woodhead all summer. I remember making jokes about him and people getting legitimately offended and angry. I’ll root for anyone in a Jets uniform, but I don’t have any confidence in Woodhead making any sort of an impact.
The Jets had their chance to sign a veteran WR during camp, possibly Bobby Wade, and they passed on it. Right now we could really use an extra guy, and we dont have one.
there would be no use for a player like bobby wade on the roster. we have edwards and JC as the #1 and #1a. clowney is the speed guy. brad smith and wallace wright are key special teams contributors and deserve a roster spot. i would rather have the clown than a semi-effective veteran. we are fine at receiver, when everyone is healthy.
perhaps some criticism should be why isnt a WR on the practice squad. but there are only 8 spots there, you cant have every position reserved on the PS
i dont think people are saying woodhead can be wes welker. that is ridiculous. but it is an absolute fact that the coaching staff loves the guy. the people that simply discredit him right off the bat are basically saying they know more than the coaching staff. he has great hands and is incredibly quick. to play the slot, you need that great burst / elusiveness in the first 5 yards from the line. i think he has this. the guy is really shifty and can make defenders miss in space. he just needs to learn the offence and route running. it is clear that he already has a head start on this from the scout team. so the coaches seem to be giving him a legit shot. why try to shoot this down? and to me, his height is irrelevant – we are not throwing him fade routes or jump balls. would wes welker be any less effective if he was 5-8 instead of 5-9?
Bent brings up a good point, as usual.
Despite the emotions on Woody, this seems to be about the numbers game this week. It’s about bodies flying on and off the roster.
Perhaps it’s best to think of this as a Ten-Day Contract signing, like in the NBA. At least, we’ve HEARD of Woody, as opposed to most of those b-ball roster moves.
Anything he provides is gravy.
good point miketaliaferro……..unless he screws up playing out of position
