We hadn’t gotten a chance to post this play on the site yet, the definition of ‘circus catch.’

Make sure to read Rex’s lips. Honestly, Riveron blew the call. The shin was down, but who cares if he’s not contacted until he’s into the EZ…

(Sombrero slant to Fifth Down, who is discussing the call)

hahahahaha gotta love Rex. He’s nearing Bill Parcells’ “turn-the-kids-away-for-his-closeup” territory for the mouth and obvious words he is using.

  2. avatar Jack says:

I believe Rex said it in the most eloquent way possible.

  3. avatar leon's legs says:

i believe rex need to get a few sacks on sunday

That blown call should have cost the Fins a timeout, which may have resulted in them having to settle for FG at the end of the game.

  5. avatar Bent says:

I think it’s possible that either (1) the guy’s leg made contact with Braylon as he went to catch the ball, in which case he is down when his knee hits and the ball is short of the line or (2) the ball had not broken the plane when the defender touched him on the goalline.

However, there was no decent angle shown to substantiate (2) and therefore the overriding evidence to overturn the call on the field (even though it perhaps was wrong) did not exist, so the call should stand.

They scored on the next play anyway, so it doesn’t really matter (other than Mole’s comment, which does make sense). You expect the home team to get the benefit of the doubt though. If the call on the field had been down by contact, would it have been worth challenging it? I say no, because I don’t think it would have been reversed and the Jets would have had one less timeout (notwithstanding the fact that they didn’t use them – at least they’d have had the option).

Maybe the Jets would have been better off scoring on third down, then the Dolphins would have had less time to drive at the end!

    mole57:

The Phins did not use any time outs in the last TD.

We know the defense will show up Sunday, the question is, will Franchez?

This game will go a long way into the making or breaking of a rookie QB. Remember the Dolphins have a good, to very good OL and they sacked Henne, what? five or six times?

Jets will win but Franchez can not be intimidated into turnovers!!!

  7. avatar mole57 says:

    Hank,
The Fins had one timeout left when they ran the wildcat up the middle. Do you think they run that play with ten seconds left and no timeouts?

Second, I believe they did use a timeout on that drive, right after the they converted the third down at the six.

  8. avatar mole57 says:

    correction:
They used a timeout on the play right after that.

  9. avatar john sec.125 says:

the call was wrong….period. i expect at least one blown call per game from nfl officials. it could have made miami attempt a pass play rather than set up in the wildcat with ten seconds to go. then again, just the fact that more time would have been on the clock if the jets didn’t have to run that extra play could have made the entire thing moot. they would have scored no matter what they ran. the jet d was that bad.

at the time i though it was incredibly ballsy by the dolphins to challenge that call. after wating the replay 20 times, i still do not believe there is conclusive edivence to overturn the call on the field.

still – why even bother challenging? you are risking a time out in a tight game, to spot the ball at the 1.5 foot line at best.

  11. avatar hank/naples says:

    mole57;

I stand corrected !! I knew the Phins had 2 timeout left @ the 2:00 min warning. I thought that a pass had stopped the clock. You are right, the Phins did stop the clock with 17 sec. left.

However, remember Brown had said then (2:00 min mark) that they were “going for the win, no field goals”

  12. avatar NamVetJet says:

That game is over—-only concern is Buffalo.
    Go Jets.

  13. avatar Dirty#6 says:

Don’t you need to have overwhelming or somewhat obvious evidence to overturn a call? I mean it could have went either way, but how the hell are you going to reverse a TD based on that! Utterly ridiculous! And who knows the impact, but thats more time on the clock and 1 less Miami TO.

  14. avatar bernie says:

This illustrates exactly why the replay rule needs to go. Call on the field was TD, replay did not have conclusive evidence, and so they… overturned it? This happens all too often. In my mind, if there’s conclusive evidence, it should take no more than 10-15 seconds to review. If it takes longer, there is no way it’s conclusive.

  15. avatar Bent says:

The replay rule does not need to go, it needs to be enforced correctly. In this instance, it was not. Next time, on an occasion when it doesn’t benefit the jets, I’m sure they’ll get it right.

No replay? Would you be saying that if the call on the field was incomplete?

  16. avatar mole57 says:

The officiating was pretty horrible the whole game. The PI that set up our last touchdown was very questionable (and that’s being kind), as was Sanchez being called for grounding with Keller in the area.

And Bent, remember that the replay rule was put in place because the Jets finally had a call go their way (Vinny’s 1-yard-shy-of-the-goalline TD vs. Seattle).

  17. avatar Bent says:

I haven’t forgotten. Leaving aside the fantastically glorious nature of that occasion, it was outrageous and if it went against the jets, we’d still be hearing about it now.

I did get a kick out of when they measured for the first down and it was good by about 2 yards.

I disagree on the interference call though. You don’t expect those on the road but that little tug on his arm/jersey was the difference between him getting fingertips to the ball and having two hands on it.

  18. avatar Zartan says:

i believe guys were saying the refs played fare. we got 1 questionable call, cool. the refs missed too many calls that should have gone in the Jets favor. Thats the reason the jets couldnt make plays to stop the Phins. It was like Kobe or Jordan knowing the other team cant touch them and taking advantage.

  19. avatar StvDoe says:

It’s bothersome that even with the benefit of replay some calls, such as this one, are still gotten wrong(No conclusive evidence, call should stand.)

But it’s still a hell of a lot better than the days before replay. Now at least most of the obvious mistakes are corrected, even while the less obvious are sometimes still misjudged.

BTW, on a side note probably of interest only to me, this call cost me my fantasy match. My opponent had both Sanchez and Jones. The stricken TD pass by Sanchez cost him 4 points. The Jones TD gave him 6.1 points. (0.1 for the yard rushing.) Net gain 2.1 points. I lost the match by 2 points. If the EdwardsTD stands I win by 0.1.

In spite of that I’m still 100% behind replay. IMO it’s the best rule change in football history.
