The Rundown: The Crypt Keeper Is Mixing Up His Offense, But How Exactly?

Corey made a great point yesterday on his fantastic radio show, asking whether or not the Bills would run the Wildcat. “When you have the personnel, and believe me, [the Bills] have the personnel … in Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson,” Corey stated. “This is a team that is desperate for a win.”

Miami showed other teams that it can be done to the Jets. Could the Bills be employing a Wildcat offense this weekend? Reporters are limited in Jauron’s regime from seeing much of practice, so it’s hard to say. Still, reporters did noting that the offense is in shambles and that the team has been clamped down on talking about it this week. Antenna up yet?

The Buffalo Bills no-huddle offence has suddenly become the no-comment attack.

If the Bills intend to scuttle running the offence they’ve used since May, no one was willing to say after practice Thursday as the team prepares to play at the New York Jets this weekend.

A Bills media relations official told reporters to ask only injury-related questions to Dick Jauron, though the coach has often discussed other topics on previous Thursdays. When a reporter asked Jauron about the no-huddle attack, the coach walked away without saying a word.

Bills players also declined to discuss the topic. Receiver Lee Evans said he didn’t know. Receiver Josh Reed said he didn’t have time to talk because he had to go to the trainer’s room.

Running back Fred Jackson would only say, “No,” when asked if the no-huddle attack was being pushed aside.

To that wrinkle, add in that it sounds like there is yet another rookie planning to start on the line this week.

With Jonathan Scott questionable with a sprained ankle, the Buffalo Bills might start Jamon Meredith at right tackle against the New York Jets on Sunday.

If that happens, Meredith would be the third rookie starter on an offensive line that already includes guards Eric Wood and Andy Levitre. Throw in second-year left tackle Demetrius Bell and the Bills could have four linemen on the field who hadn’t taken an NFL snap until this season.

Meredith worked with the first-team offense Wednesday, while Scott watched from the sideline. Scott wasn’t at Thursday’s practice during the time allotted for the media to watch.

Coach Dick Jauron wouldn’t say if Meredith would start, but didn’t rule it out either.

There’s a lot of moving pieces for the Bills right now, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Right now, times for Head Coach Dick Jauron seem as desperate as they come …

  1. I dare them to run the Wildcat with that Offensive line, we’ll blow them out of the F’n stadium.

  2. as a bills fan, the jets should be embarrassed if it isnt a blowout.

  3. Against possibly the worst offensive line in football, the Jets better be able to get some serious pressure and total a bunch of sacks or else i’m going to lose faith. If you cant get it done against this offensive line, then you never will.

  4. There is no way that the Bills are going to try the Wildcat against the Jets. First and foremost, they do not have the personnel – sure they’ve got two decent running backs, but their offensive line is the greenest in the league. You need experienced lineman to execute the Wildcat, and the Bills don’t have them. And what do you think TO’s reaction would be if the Bills shifted even further away from their feeble passing attack? He’d probably start playing for the Jets half way through the game. The Bills, already under heavy fire, aren’t going to purposefully draw any more negative attention to themselves. No one on that offense is on the same page as anyone else, and adding the wildcat five games into the season isn’t going to help anyone get into synch. But let’s say that Jauron grasps for straws and tries it against the Jets. As pissed off as the Jets defense is right now, I think Scott and Company would shut it down with such violence that the cameras would have to pan away from the field during tackles. And how would that make Buffalo look? They bring a gimmick offense into the Jets home stadium and the Jets tear it apart like Dobermans. The tiny bit of respect that anyone has for the Bills would evaporate if Jauron tried to pull such a schmuck move.

I think the Bills are going to ditch the no huddle, try to collect themselves, and get back to fundamental football. Unfortunately for them, it’s not going to be enough. Jets 47. Bills 3.

  5. No chance they run the wildcat. Miamis version worked on us because it was an actual offense, which I still do not think we prepared for, When other teams run it, ourselves included, its a gimmick. Maybe it works once a game for a few yards but that is it.

  6. In my best Jim Mora..

    Wildcat!? Wildcat!?

The Bills false started something like 10 times last week. Against the ex-Jets. Their offense is in a shambles and the cure for that is to learn a gimmick offense and run it in one of the loudest, most hostile stadiums they will play in all year against a pissed off team?

    Pretty please, run it.

  7. I love how you refer to the Browns as the ex-Jets. I’ll have to start saying that.

  8. Miami’s Wildcat works so well because of Ronnie Brown and perfect execution that the Dolphins have worked on for 2 years. With a terrible OL and backs unfamiliar with the formations, I hope the Bills run the Wildcat.

  9. I vaguely remember the Dolphins Ravens playoff game last year. Why didn’t the wilcat work then? And what is Rex going to do to make sure it doesnt work 3 weeks from now?

  10. Miami has been working on this wildcat for 2 years….the caught the jets at a perfect time and played a perfect game to beat us on the last play of the game…..

The Bills are not going to learn how to play the Wildcat in a weekend to be able to have any impact on this game.

I dont care how we win this game but winning htis game is a must…. There are no must wins in Oct but this is needed to get the horrible taste of everyones mouth…..especially our HC!

  11. JesusRevis,

I think last week was the first time I have seen the Dolphins actually pull the QB off the field and play just 1 WR. Last year it was usually Chad lining up wide with at least 1 more WR on the field. This week they completely pulled Henne off the field essentially making the field 11 on 11. They also ran the formation for a ton of plays whereas last season you would have seen more personnel on the field because they wanted to catch you off guard with either the Wildcat or a standard look with Pennington at QB. There was no fooling this time.

They will work on different things for the next matchup. My guess is you will see the DE’s being asked to break off the line at the snap as they were often unblocked or simply picked up by the fullback. I think you will also see a much tighter defense. The Wildcat basically goes in 3 directions, most of which is their “power” up the gut. I thought that was where we got murdered because they overload blockers and our guys were too far outside. In some respects having all those extra linemen worked against us because they were all out of position for where Miami actually attacked.

  12. Why would to put a picture of the crypt keeper!? I’m going to have nightmares for days now. Go Jets !!

  13. To most teams, the Wildcat is just a gimmick series of plays (see: Brad Smith), but to Miami, it is a well correographed and executed scheme with the perfect personnel to run it properly (including the O-Line).

I would welcome the Bills trying it on the Jets!
