Danny Woodhead Signed to Active Roster

As we have all been expecting, Hutch reports that the Jets have signed RB-turned-WR, Danny Woodhead to the roster however not much else is known as the person who revealed this information is not allowed to speak publically.
The Jets have signed practice-squad running back-turned-wide receiver Danny Woodhead to the active roster today, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak publicly.
The move was likely prompted by the injuries to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quad). Cotchery is out and Smith isn’t expected to play, either.
While David Clowney will get the start the Jets are still short a receiver in the slot and I’m sure the team doesn’t want to use Wallace Wright often due to his work on Special Teams (and his non-stellar preseason on offense) which leaves it up to Danny Woodhead who was said to have excelled in his new position. Danny will finally get his chance to showcase his talent in regular season action and hopefully he will be able to make some good plays.
Edit: DT Howard Green was cut to make room. Does this mean another young gun (Ropati Pitoitua) will get his shot?

im surprised the team dosent trust w. wright especially he was a favorite target of sanchez during the camps and preseason…not gonna lie im a little curious to see what woodhead can do in the slot…hopefully he proves me wrong i was one of the few who thought he was a waste of a roster spot
hopefully sanchez can stop overthrowing his receivers especially woodhead who is only 5′7″
Although Sanchez and Wright seemed to be developing a rapport in the Preseason don’t forget Wallace is usually seen on Special Teams and I’m not sure if the Jets are willing to put their full trust in Walle which is why they’ll probably alternate between Woodhead and Wright.
Congratulations to Danny, although if Cotch or Brad can go, he’ll probably not be active.
Carroll will presumably be activated as the other gunner if Smith is out.
it will b exciting to see wat danny can do…in the pre season he was a game breaker…lets see wut he can do playing with the wolves!
just got good news from my sister that there is an extra ticket for the game 2morow! cant wait to go scream out J E T S JET S JETS JETS!!!!
Fans need to get loud tomorrow!!! J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS… Woodhead should be a nice addition to the passing game because it should put him in space!
I think this is a smart, creative move by our FO. Great example of using depth to address a need (this time it was slot WR).
If he can make one play tomorrow, which I believe he will, the bills def coordinator will have to account for him the rest of the game.
No matter what this a feel good story since Woody’s finally getting a chance at real playing time in a position he can actually succeed at.
Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!
Get ‘em Danny
How about those buckeyes, LOL!
Go JETS!!!!!!!
Wow! Congratulations to him. Yes, he might not be active but just making the 53 man roster is a big accomplishment. And to do it at WR – who saw that coming. This guy must be a really hard worker in addition to having athletic ability. I don’t know if he will ever truly make an impact but you’ve got to hand it to him for making it this far. Very impressive.
Oh wow, we have our own version of wes welker
It occurred to me that Woodhead’s speed coming out of the slot could be valuable in forcing the interior defense deeper, even if he never catches a pass.
similarly, faking an end around to him will get them on their heels.
Who was released to make room?
With the addition of Edwards and the emergence of Clowney we now have the ability to work the whole field sideline to sideline and up and back. That creates space in the middle whether it’s the slot receiver, Keller or Leon coming out of the backfield. It creates the potential for a multi-faceted attack that we haven’t had in a long, long time, if ever. We’ll now see if Shotty is as good as we have been told. There are no more excuses. All the weapons are in place.
I think this is a great move! This guy is tough!
Small for a running back… but the perfect size for a slot receiver at 5′7″ 195lbs. This guy will break tackles and gain yardage after the catch.
Could this be Chrebet II in the making??? I hope so, the Jets need another Chrebet type receiver roaming the middle of the field. If he can perform in this role it will open things up for Keller in the mediium to deep middle. It will also get ride of the 8 & 9 in the box and open up the running game.
Joe S.
Howard Greene cut.
I like it, but couldn’t they have just used Leon in the slot? We are still trying to get him more touches. Either way, I like the small speedy guy in the slot. Give em hell Danny!
The guy cut to make room might surprise you.
Bye, Howard Green.
Hello, Ropati Pitoitua?
I’m not prepared to say either Woody or Patty would make a particular contribution right away, but must say that I’m intrigued by the possibilities in both cases.
I’ll go as far as saying I’m curious, for now.
I reserve the right to gush or grouse after the fact. :)
Is Howard Greene taking the hit for the team overall for last Monday?
He was pretty poor, it has to be said, but he was so poor that he got benched so you can’t blame him for anything that happened in the fourth quarter (prior to which Miami only had 10 points!)
So, no, he’s just been cut because Potty and Pouha are better than him.
is it true when the team was practicing for the patriots woodhead did such a good job acting as welker that this is why hes getting his chance at slot??
That’s how they’re reporting it, but it wouldn’t be happening so soon without the injuries.
He did a great job preparing them though! He was held without a catch!
(oh, right, he didn’t play)
I’m thrilled for Danny.. the kid just won’t quit..and he’s dangerous in open space.. if he gets a catch plus two steps..yeah, just two steps,, he’ll break it wide open.very crafty runner.. can’t wait!
In this weather Woodhead can break a couple, in my opinion. Short strides.
I didn’t realize he’s 195lbs. 5-7 195lbs is small but not tiny. I dont know How Sanchez can see him: 6-2 QB to 5-7 slot just past those huge linemen? How does that work? Hope I’m wrong. Would love to see this work out!
He’s actually 205 if what they said in camp was accurate…and he’s closer to 5′8″.
I think he is actually 5′ 7 5/8″ with his cleats on.
This can be something special if Woodhead pans out.How do ya cover all these options. If we field keller, edwards, cotch,&woodhead put washington in the backfield there is so much speed on the offense it will cause havoc on opposing defenses.Imagine Woodhead and Washington in the Seminole formation this could be the one two punch for the 8 or 9 man fronts we’ve been getting everyweek..Let one of these two guys break a long one and watch the cover 2 we see for the remainder of games…We need to put Danny on the field to let these teams know this is no decoy and when they realize the speed and abilities of offense they will back off and open holes for Jones and Washington…Greene needs to see the field more he is a solid 5 yards per carry…J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets
What are the chances 83 suits up tomorrow?
I’ve never seen so much excitement about a practice squad player getting promoted out of desperation.
This isnt about Woody, it is about lack of depth at a a position due to injury.
He’s gonna be the next Wes Welker?? C’mom, reality check folks.
Doubt he will get more than a few reps, and I would greatly prefer and expect them to use Leon in whatever roll you envision for him. He is a one week emergency WR.
Rusty has it right, Sanchez has been prone to overthrowing recievers, a common problem with the less tall QB’s in the league. How is he going to find Woodhead, if indeed he does get reps.
Then, remember the weather.
He is a non-factor this week.
OMG pure genius!!!!
How did the coaching staff not realize before this that Woodhead is the answer to all our problems?? There’s a rumor he can throw the ball ninety yards in the air too!!! They will have to play cover three with him in the Seminole.
The Bills coaching staff didnt sleep last night gameplanning against the magnificent Woodhead. This really threw a curve at them, jeezus, what great strategy by our great FO waiting until Saturday to promote him.
Defenses around the NFL are quaking in the boots.
That’s more of less how I feel. If he’s a non-factor then he did his job…whereas if he has to play and his inability to make an impact IS a factor, then the Jets offense might struggle.
I don’t get the negativity though. He’s worked extremely hard to make it to the NFL. We should applaud that, not knock it. Now he’s a Jet, so why not support him along with the rest of the team?
If Darren Sproles can become a full time NFL player, then perhaps so can Danny Woodhead. He can’t prove that sitting on a practice squad.
i think this shows he wasnt just a pitty practice squad addition, they really liked him. Good Luck to him I hope he does well, maybe he can be our smaller version of Wayne Chrebet
I am not negative about his accomplishments, he is to be commended. My sarcasm is aimed at the commenters that are comparing him to Wes Welker and Chrebet. Hes never played the position and the lone reason he is lining up out there is he is the only remaining skill position player on the roster.
They may have a play or two drawn up for him, but he is hardly going to be the go to guy on third down, is all I’m saying.
I hope he does not play, in truth, because it means everyone else stays healthy and is doing a good job.
Just read the news this morning out here in AZ about Woodhead. Now let’s hoope he is activated for the game. I have been saying all along that his position on the Jets might be slot receiver, with the team being loaded with great RBs. He does add so many thing to the game with his speed and quickness. Maybe if he does get in the game, he will be overlooked by the defense, initially.
Remember Ryan saying that the Jets had a secret WR, and that Woodhead had two of the best hands on the team. Maybe it is time for him to get his chance. That is all he is asking. He would do anything for the Jets, on or off the field. These guys that are pissed that he is even still on the team are very unhappy people. Very sorry that they are so negative. Remember, guys, you have a choice to be happy or not. Get on board with everyone else, and wish good luck to Woodhead. The team needs everyone in their corner.
Maybe we will see two great former D-ll running backs in the same game, as Xavier Omon plays for the Bills.
In the world of Danny Woodhead, wonders never cease. Go CSC Eagles!!!
