Kris Jenkins Out for Season?

by Bassett on October 19th, 2009 at 8:49 am

Want to feel worse? OK, here goes!

Would a season ending injury to the Jets world class nose tackle make you want to end it this morning? I guess we’ll find out. Hit it, Daily News!

The early indications are that NT Kris Jenkins has suffered a season-ending knee injury. Rex Ryan said after the loss that it’s “probably severe,” but he didn’t want to say anything definitive until an MRI exam is taken. But people familiar with Jenkins’ injury say he suffered ligament damage and the fear is that he’s done for 2009.

Leberfeld wrote on Jets Confidential that Shaun Ellis basically corroborated this fact, from what he heard from Jenkins.

Shaun Ellis said he talked to Jenkins after the game. A reporter asked Ellis if Jenkins was talking like he was done for the year. “It sounded that way,” said Ellis.

Guh. While, Shonn Greene sits on the bench, this is basically why we wanted the Jets to use a second or third rounder on a future NT for the team back in the spring. Kris Jenkins is a great player — there’s no doubt about that — but an injury like that to a guy his size was a risk that the team should have better prepared for.

Trade a second round pick for Julius Peppers ASAP!!!!

  2. avatar AKA...Drew says:

This is a nightmare that I just want to wake up from already.

Without Jenks we are an ordinary D at best.

I do not buy into the S Greene on the bench theory. We couldnt have draft a guy in the 3rd round to replace Jenkins or do a better job than Pouha would anyway.

TJ is out after this year and Leon has never proven he can carry the load. We needed a legit power RB to replace TJ (next year or injured) just as much if not more than Jenks.

  3. avatar john sec.125 says:

i’ve been saying it for forty years and i’ll say it again: we are done.

  4. avatar chicagojets says:

    There goes the season

  5. avatar Brendan says:

i will now light myself on fire…

  6. avatar Bent says:

“Trade a second round pick for Julius Peppers ASAP!!!!”

That would put them $10m over the cap.

  7. avatar jetsrdone says:

    Rex Ryan=Pete Carroll

  8. avatar AKA...Drew says:

We have a rookie QB and a rookie HC. I was drinking the Kool Aid and spooning it out to others 3 weeks ago.

I have now realized that we need alot of things to get better and fall our way to have confidence this year.

I still feel like I got punched in the face today….

  9. avatar Jetsrdone says:

Bent, there’s no possible way to fit him under the cap?

  10. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

    Wow, everyone off the bandwagon!

  11. avatar Bent says:

jetsrdone – Not even close. He earns $16m and the Jets have no cap room whatsoever.

  12. avatar john sec.125 says:

to lose to the bills AT HOME, with a backup qb is inexcusable….period.

  13. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

They should be in a sell mode rather than buy this week.

TJ and Ellis might actually bring us back some picks, and I would take a seventh rounder for Shephard.

  14. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Yesterday was more than just a loss it was as painful a game as I have watched in a long time. The roller coaster of emotions was almost unfair.

As the losing FG goes thru the upright and I crumble to the floor……my 2 year old son (wearing his brand new Jets jersey) crawls next to me and whispers “dont worry Daddy it’s okay”

As I layed there hugging him….. I said to myself. I probably said the same thing to my dad 30 years ago.

  15. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

I don’t want Julius Peppers anyway. He’s played like garbage all year. Theoretically its not over yet, but if they’re going to tank, let them tank. They have a limited compliment of draft picks next season and they’re going to need them to be as high as possible.

  16. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Basset, thanks for the Shonn Greene reflection.

For someone to say they could not get a decent back up nose tackle in the third round is absurd, that is exactly where most of these players are found.

Of Jenkins quality, probably not, but better than what is in house, entirely possible.

But now that Greene is here they may as well try to trade Jones off a great game.

  17. avatar Bent says:

This defense is deeper than last year’s unit. When Jenkins has been out, of course they are weakened, but they have done much, much better without him than they did last season.

Pouha has improved a lot and Pitoitua looked yesterday like he is ready to step up. It’s going to be tough to win relying on those guys filling Jenkins shoes, but you won’t ever see me quit on a season. I look forward to seeing them give it their best shot.

This team still has a bunch of talent, even if they have gone backwards since the start of the season.

  18. avatar di3h@rdj3tsfan says:

lmfao brendan ur crazy!!!!!, thats funny, but thats the way i feel also were done with big kris out for the season, stick a fork in us time to look forward to next year!!!!

  19. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

What NT was taken in the 3rd that could step in right now?

And Wise Old Jets fan, you are ready to sell the entire season out week six? Just stop watching then, you aren’t a real fan anyway.

  20. avatar Bent says:

“For someone to say they could not get a decent back up nose tackle in the third round is absurd, that is exactly where most of these players are found.”

In this year’s draft, I still maintain that there wasn’t one. It usually takes nose tackles (unless they are elite) a while to contribute at the NFL level (exhibit A: Sione Pouha), especially one capable of two gapping like Jenkins. Any draft pick would not be ready to replace Jenkins now…in three years maybe. At the time, I said anyone they drafted probably wouldn’t be able to do any better than Pouha or Potty and I stand by that.

I’m not defending that particular move, because I didn’t like it, but if you can name me one nose tackle that was available on the second day that is contributing for his team then that’s one more than I can.

  21. avatar john sec.125 says:

crazy, it’s the real fans that realize what is going on. this team is poorly coached and mediocre at best. that was the worst performance by a jet qb in franchise history. this is how they respond to that game in miami? 14 penalties?

  22. avatar fonzie says:

    Aka Drew,

What about Jarron Gilbert? How can you say we couldn’t address the trenches. I said it the jets are only as good as their weakest link. The defensive line will go down first and then the offensive line. Both lines took big hits sunday but there is still half a season to go. The discipline and direction that I was talking about earlier this summer that this team doesn’t have showed again on consecutive penalities throughout the game. BUDDY BOY has shown that he only handles the entire team when they are about to go up in flames. Not a smart way to run the football team. the GOLDEN BOY has shown insipidness during times of great stress and cannot will this team together. We need leadership. Our head coach has not shown that.

  23. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m with Brendan and will be setting myself on fire. Losing is one thing. I’m a Jets fan afterall and have a thick skin for high hopes crasing against the grund, however losing Jenkins just plain sucks.

  24. avatar Rich K says:

Jenkins will be a great loss. Equally alarming is the lack of sacks from others on the defensive front 7-8. Calvin Pace? Welcome back- now tackle the QB! & Let’s not let Vernon (let someone else tackle the guy) Gholston off the hook. I charted his appearances best I could yesterday & I had him assisitng on one tackle. All the other times you could even find him in the defensive scrum of taklers, HE WAS STANDING THERE observing the end of the play or just arriving on the scene. Who ever scouted this guy in 07, I hope he went with Mangini to Cleveland & is still NOT scouting for the Jets.

  25. avatar Dennis says:

Before the season, I would’ve taken 3-3 at this point. Of course, I would’ve figured the losses would be to NE, Tenn and NO. What’s frustrating is we lost two games we should’ve won, especially this one. I was statring to drink the kool-aid after week 3 as well, but my pre-season assessment was the season would be successful at 8-8 if Sanchez developed.

The really concerning part of yesterday was Sanchez was pitiful. Fouts kept harping on the weather, and Sanchez needs to learn how to play in the wind and rain (and soon to be snow) quickly, because that’s life in the Meadowlands. It will be interesting to see if the wind is any different in the new stadium.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Fonzie – Gilbert might have bolstered the line (then again, he probably wouldn’t have been ready…he’s been inactive for the Bears so far this year), but he isn’t a nose tackle. He gives up 75 pounds to Jenkins. Even if they made that pick, we’d still be bemoaning the lack of a backup at nose tackle.

  27. avatar starz31 says:

If fluke means we beat them straight up…ugh ok, sure.

There aren’t many excuses for the past 2 weeks. Plenty of excuses for why we didnt play well, but there are no excuses for why nothing was done to fix those mistakes.
I used to think Mangini didn’t know what the word “adjust” meant, but its so clear now, that BSchotty certainly doesn’t know what it means either.

Most fans understand we have a rookie QB, and can deal with the faults that come with that…but what is mind boggling is that I dont think the Coaches think we have a rookie QB.

The guy is throwing picks? Hmm…Lets throw some more!!

  28. avatar GP says:

Jesus, what next? Revis’ hands are gonna fall off? Leon’s gonna suffer a career ending injury on Dancing With the Stars? This is absolutely awful.

  29. avatar starz31 says:

haha…i think i replied to a post that got deleted…im alright with that though lol

  30. avatar Brendan says:

I was fine with Schotty’s play selection for the most part. They rushed it to almost a 60/40 split (57/43 to be exact). They had big runs which explains why they held the ball for longer than we did. I just hated the end of the first half ‘settle on the field goal’ approach, which ultimately backfired. That’s the head coach, not the O-coordinator. And it was also Sanchez making horrendous reads, staring down one receiver, and throwing with literally no mechanics to speak of that lead to those INT’s, not the play calling.

  31. avatar Dave75 says:

Why Why Why? This team has a history of building up their fans hopes and then crushing them. The Kool Aid has run dry and we need to start accepting that this team is not bound for the Super Bowl or even a playoff birth. Sanchez seems to be going the other way. How much better would you guys feel today if we dropped the first 3 and then won the next 3?

Just figures as much considering I’m a Mets and Islanders fan also. i’m cursed

  32. avatar Brendan says:

Dave, I thought no one could have it worse than me being a Jets/Mets/Knicks fan. But Islanders give you the win. I wonder if people realize there’s an entire population of NY sports fans that are as tortured as Cleveland fans (Mets, Jets, Knicks ughhhhhhhhhhhh my life is terrible).

  33. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    WOJF Fonzie and others….

I will stand by what I said… I dont think there was a guy we could have taken in the 3 rd round that could come in and do a better job than Pouha or anyone else we have at NT this year.

The Greene move was a move to ensure we had RB’s going into a season with a rookie QB and good OL. Let alone the fact that TJ is on the last year of his contract and is prob gone next year.

Gilbert? really? the guy is a DE not a NT. Please learn your facts before challenging me on anything

  34. avatar starz31 says:

    Brendan…all true points.

But it seemed that Schotty didnt do a good job of reeling in Sanchez in the 4th when things were slowly coming apart. I dont know if he says, throw it deep, or if thats the read, but he should have said to Sanchez, kid, no need to make plays deep, we just need to move the chains. I didnt see that. Its like they let Sanchez try to do more when things were falling apart when they should have done the opposite. (all speculation though)

  35. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Just noticed Bents reply….

Thanks Bent for making sense as usual.

  36. avatar JesusRevis says:

The Bills needed us to throw 6 interceptions, botch a FG snap and miss a FG, just to beat us in OT. That just shows how hard the Jets had to try just to lose this game. Absolutely pathetic.

  37. avatar pound4pound says:

Brendan, I agree with you that the run-pass split was pretty good. My problem was with what kind of passes they attempted. Once it was clear that Sanchez was struggling with his timing (and the wind) on longer passes, I would’ve liked to see a LOT more short passes to the other WR’s and to the RB’s out of the backfield. The long attempts to Braylon were (literally) going nowhere, and it got us away from our methodical, ball-control approach.

With that being said, I’m a lot more concerned about our defense moving forward than our offense. Sanchez is going to have some games like this, and the run game is still rock-solid. The defense, otoh, is giving up big plays on the ground, which has to be driving Rex insane after he coached the best run defense in the league the past few years. And no Jenkins means even more trouble in rushes up the middle.

Do we switch to a true 4-3 if Kris is done?

  38. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Let’s have tannenbaum call mangini for Shaun Rogers.

I am so glad i was at a wedding and didnt watch or listen to the a game for the first time in since ’96.

Pathetic. 210 yds rushing and we lose? Rex ryan needs to get his head straight, FIRE SCHOTTENHEIMER NOW like ive been saying, and call up Jeff Garcia ASAP. Just to push sanchez and have a credible option at backup. I would also NEVER bench Sanchez for Clemens, that’s not a way to win.

As for Jenkins going down, theres nothing we can do, no cap space or picks for a trade so let’s just hope for the best. Look we can all jump off the roof or see a mediocre schedule for the next three games. If we can be 5-3 at the break thats not too bad.

Horrible weekend, just horrible. I had TJ on the bench on my fantasy team too. God, i hate schottenheimer.

  39. avatar WW85 says:

The casualty of this loss should be Schotty.

  40. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Brendan…

I know the % was okay but the fact is Schotty tried to get Sanchez going with playaction and cute roll outs when it was clear he should have been sticking the ball in TJ/Leon stomach.

These the games you just wear down a beaten and undersized D that couldnt stop our running game at all.

We saw this against the Eagles 2 years ago. Our running game is dominate and Schotty gets cute in the passing game.

With that said. Sanchez was horrible.

  41. avatar JesusRevis says:

Enough with Jarron Gilbert, im sick of hearing about this kid. He could never play NT, hes way too small, he played for a smal lschool and has never played a snap in the NFL. Some of you act like hes some dominant player, which he never even was in college. Losing a player of Kris Jenkins calibur is going to sting a team, regardless of who your backup is. Please, enough with Gilbert. I can jump out of a pool too.

  42. avatar starz31 says:

Things could be worse…we could have Dick Jauron as our head coach!

  43. avatar subwayfare says:

Bent said: “I think that even if they lose this game, the jets will improve on both sides of the ball over the course of the season and next year. If they happen to lose for whatever reason (maybe sanchez turns it over a lot, maybe Jenkins has issues with his back and the defense struggles, whatever) do you seriously think the jets will give up on the season at 3-3?”

Jesus, Bent. Can you please turn that clairvoyant voodoo around into some positive force?

I took Buffalo to cover in my pool this week, because all that, “Can’t wait to beat up on that pathetic Bills team to wash away the Miami loss,” talk made me nervous. That and the wet, windy weather report, Sanchez’ southern California arm and no Cotch or Brad Smith were a stew of bad omens. Still, the Bills needed every one of those five picks – and one from the punter – to pull out an OT win.

I’m not giving up on this team, coach or QB, yet. Rookie growing pains on the sidelines (taking the opponent too lightly, too many penalties, not overruling the OC if the game plan/play calls weren’t appropriate, poor use of challenges) and behind center (bad throws, bad reads, taking long sacks, fumble on a handoff) were expected by most rational, dispassionate prognosticators for a reason. I give credit to Ryan and Sanchez for outperforming expectations the first 3 games. I’ll take that as a positive for the future even if the present might get a little ugly at times.

  44. avatar Bent says:

“Let’s have tannenbaum call mangini for Shaun Rogers.”

We need to give up on any trades. The Braylon Edwards move used up all available cap space.

Mel posted a rumor from Adam Schefter yesterday that the Jets were looking to trade Marques Douglas. I couldn’t really understand why…maybe for picks with Pouha having moved ahead of him on the depth chart and Potty emerging. I guess that won’t happen now.

  45. avatar starz31 says:

“Let’s have tannenbaum call mangini for Shaun Rogers.”

Hmm…Shaun Rogers and a 3rd round pick in return for James Ideghibo, Erik Ainge, and Danny Woodhead?

  46. avatar Bent says:

Sub – Amazingly all that happened and they still would have won if not for a bobbled snap or a Hartsock hold or any of about twenty other things that would have been enough to put them out of reach.

I was impressed with Pitoitua yesterday, maybe he will emerge to be a force on the defensive line and the downgrade from Jenkins (who was sitting out a high % of snaps anyway) won’t be as bad as we thought and then the offense will take off once Cotch returns.

    (Fingers crossed).

  47. avatar starz31 says:

subway fare…great points in that last paragraph. No one said this was going to be easy. It seemed that way after were 3-0 but seriously, Bill Parcells is right everytime lol…Never as good as you are and never as bad you are.

  48. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Speaking of James Ideghibo…..

This guy should be suspended for just being an idiot and having no common sense or understanding if a situation.

This guy is a pet peeve of mine for 2 years now. Yea he hits hard but he also acts like he a effing superstar and he barely plays…..and when he does he makes one the most ridiculous stunts I have ever seen. With the game on the line!!!!!! How Westoff didnt kick him in the chest is amazing to me.

  49. avatar Bent says:

“Do we switch to a true 4-3 if Kris is done?”

The defense will stay the same, but maybe they will use the 4-man front options more often. With Pace out (and even since his return), they’ve hardly played much conventional 3-man front stuff anyway, apart from on passing downs when Jenkins is not in the game anyway.

  50. avatar fonzie says:

    Aka Drew and Bent,

We didn’t NEED a backup nose tackle. According to BUDDY BOY’s scheme and how we ran the defense it was about getting the scheme adjusted to the players not the other way around. So we could use any defensive lineman and pettine and Ryan could use them effectively. The bears run a traditional 4-3 defense which means they rely on their ends to produce pressure and sacks. Having Gilbert and his EXPLOSIVENESS of which NO ONE ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE has this year would be a positive. We didn’t need a nose tackle. We simply needed beef on the rotation and someone who could assist jenkins after tradig coleman and pick up that fat tub of lard Douglass. The bears have good defensive linemen ahead of gilbert. He will develop into a good defensive lineman some day the jets had their chance.

  51. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

lol i cant believe people are actually talking about trading for shaun rogers. ITS NEVER HAPPENING BECAUSE WE HAVE NO MORE CAP SPACE. A real shame though because if it were possible, it would be a great deal. If Jenks’ knee exploded his career may be in jeopardy.

  52. avatar Bassett says:

Bent … what about Sammie Lee Hill?

He was available in the third round. Now he might not be ready this year, but my point is that the team needed to start bringing someone along THIS YEAR to prepare for the inevitable injury that Jenkins was going to sustain.

The Jets lines are both paper thin … this was the gamble the team took this season, and between Woody, Jenkins and Faneca’s spotty play, was the risk they took.

  53. avatar Bent says:

Drew – How about Murrell? It was him who actually landed a punch and probably should have been the one to get ejected. It was kind of a sucker punch too. If Digs and the other guy were just brawling one-on-one then there’s probably no flag.

If I was the NFL, Murrell’s fine would be double that of Digs and I’d suspend him too.

  54. avatar Bent says:

That’s my point, Bassett. He was one of several NT prospects, but none of them would be ready to help out now.

Again, I’d have liked them to bolster the line depth in the draft too, but I don’t think it would have helped them when Jenkins went down. I wish they’d drafted an heir apparent in 2008. The Ainge, Henry and Garner picks were terrible wastes.

Unfortunately, there will be no quick fix in next year’s draft either, unless they use a high pick.

Let’s hope Pitoitua can be the guy.

  55. avatar Brendan says:

At least Hunter looked good yesterday coming in for Woody. If he pans out that would be huge.

  56. avatar slink88 says:

They are who we thought they were (most of us anyway). After 6 games they are 3-3. They could have been better given the start but the bottom line is that this is a .500 team. It’s everyone’s fault for buying in to the Super Bowl talk after 3 games (don’t we know better by now?). I admit to being smitten with Ryan, Sanchez, and the defense also.

Anyway, I am still thinking Sanchez is the future of this team and there is some hope on defense to keep them in most games. However, we are in for many more ups and downs this year. The defense has done a nice job keeping points down (except that Miami debacle) but it is still void of big plays. There have been very few sacks, INTs, and or fumble recoveries to say that this defense is dominent.

It’s time to reset the expectations back to where they were before the season started and look for signs that the future is brighter than the present. (That doesn’t mean throwing in the towel either. This still could be a playoff team but probably not more).

  57. avatar JesusRevis says:

How bout that holding call on Hartstock? A little knitpicky or a good call? I didnt get a chance to see a replay. Ideghibo’s punch didnt bother me, the other guy swung first, but we all know in this league the guy who acts second always gets caught.

But someone please answer me this; the referee said a player is automatically ejected for throwing a punch, but if any of you saw the Giants Redskins game week 1 when Corey Webster and Santana Moss both thre punches, and neither was ejected?

  58. avatar RJF says:

Grady Jackson…. Dont know if he’s already on a roster or not, but i’ll give him a buzz. We need some meat in there. Ok maybe not 12-4 or 11-5, but 10-6 should be wildcard worthy. You cant really blame Schotty yesterday. Now granted he deserves some blame on this losing streak, especially the Saints game. This game falls on Sanchez’s shoulders. ****, Schotty wasnt throwing picks out there like hotcakes. Sanchez made poor reads, missed easy completions and didnt throw Clowney one damn pass. How can this guy catch 3 passes for 70yds and some change. Not 1 pass his way.

  59. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Bent

Like i said i just have it in for Digs…. Murrell is also an idiot. Just shows me that we have 2 guys who just dont get it on what might have been the most important drive of the game.

Digs attempt to land a punch after the whistle was just insane though…. I mean are you watching thegame Digs? Unbelievable!!

  60. avatar JesusRevis says:

I am still very high on the defense. They have been exceptional this year. You have to account for all of the points allowed on pick – 6′s, and the fact that the Jets have allowed over 30 points off turnovers, and then consider that the Jets D is still in the top 5 for scoring defense. Thats is amazing

  61. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Bassett…

I am confused? You are calling out the Greene pick beacuse he isnt playing alot but agreeing that none of the NT prospects were probably going to be ready to step in and would be on the bench?

Is that any different than us drafting Greene to be ready next year to replace TJ?

  62. avatar Bent says:

JR – It was absolutely a hold, but oh my…it didn’t need to be. Jones had the hole anyway (and even if he was stopped at the line, they’d have still been in decent shape FG-range wise).

He really should have realized that the last thing they could afford was a holding call and just let the guy go, but when he beaten to the inside he grabbed the guy up around the shoulder area.

I was even saying aloud “no penalties”…that was just as bad in terms of knowing the situation as what Digs did.

  63. avatar JesusRevis says:

The Jets really can’t get out of their own way sometimes. They just continue to beat themselves and in my mind that is the worst way to lose.

However, nothing bothers me more than when people begin questioning our rookie QB and 1st year HC 6 games into the year, because these are the same 2 guys we all loved after 3 games. I’ve learned over the years to be patient with the Jets and I will continue to do so. For those of you worried about Sanchez, I suggest you find some rookie tape of Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, or any QB not named Peyton Manning, that should make you feel better.

  64. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Bent,

But someone please answer me this; the referee said a player is automatically ejected for throwing a punch, but if any of you saw the Giants Redskins game week 1 when Corey Webster and Santana Moss both threw punches, and neither was ejected?

  65. avatar GP says:

^^ Didn’t Peyton also stink his rookie year?

  66. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Almost every penalty in the 4th and OT were just not knowing the situation and being stupid!

High football IQ is something that needs to be explained in the meeting room this week.

Just dumb football played yesterday…..all around

  67. avatar JesusRevis says:

His numbers werent good, I believe he threw 28 int’s, but he was on a horrendous team and anyone who watched him his rookie season would tell you that he looked very impressive.

  68. avatar Bent says:

“At least Hunter looked good yesterday coming in for Woody. If he pans out that would be huge.”

Good point Brendan, although I noticed they protected him a lot with Turner or a TE/RB staying in to help him block. Brick was great though, in both phases.

In a similar vein, if the defense can still perform without Jenkins that will be a great sign for the future too. If the scheme can still be successful without the endangered species of a 360 pound athletic NT anchoring it, then we can stop panicking about how to replace him and just load up on defensive linemen of whatever size and shape (kind of how Fonzie suggests, whether Gilbert himself was the answer or not).

  69. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Jesus…

I dont think it helped when the Buffalo player had his helmet ripped off and then a punch is thrown…

  70. avatar Bassett says:

    AKA Drew –

I don’t know what Sammie Lee Hill could or couldn’t do this year, but I assume he can play Nose Tackle better today than Shonn Greene can. :)

My point is that the team is sitting Shonn Greene this year, where there were clearly more pressing needs elsewhere that the team hasn’t addressed (as Bent pointed out) for two years.

  71. avatar JesusRevis says:

Peyton Manning threw for nearly 3,800 yards with 26 TD’s and 28 int’s. Like I said though, it wasnt about the numbers, just watching him play as a rookie I knew he was the real deal, i’ve never seen a rookie QB of Mannings calibur and I doubt I ever will. Besides Marino, I don’t think there is a QB in Peytons class, just my opinion.

  72. avatar Bent says:

JR – I did see that. Wasn’t it on the first play of the game, or at least very early?

Either (a) they made a mistake or (b) since it was two guys that were guilty, they decided to let it slide rather than punish both teams (something like offsetting penalties).

  73. avatar subwayfare says:

    Bent-

I hope you’re right about Pitoitua. I’ve liked the flashes I’ve seen. And agree that they’ve spelled Jenkins a lot this year and Pouha has also improved. Hopefully Ryan’s pedigree of defensive creativity will be up the challenge. The wounded underdog role might actually suit this team better than the bully on the block IMO.

  74. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Bassett,

Since when is the draft used to replace holes immediately? There’s not one player the Jets could have taken who would have had any impact playing NT for this season. Greene maybe on the bench now, but his chances of making an impact this season are still favorable.

    I understand Bassett

i just think Pouha and Pitoitua can do as good of a job as anyone they drafted this year.

They left themselves open for fans to be critcal but i just dont agree that its a huge issue….. even though Jenks is probably gone for the year

Would I like more depth on the OL/DL yea but I also thought we needed a TJ replacement and another horse with our Rookie QB and really good OL

  76. avatar JesusRevis says:

Bent, it was very early in the came, but it always lasted nearly a minute and continued into the endzone, about 20 yards away from where it started. I just find it interesting that they would kick out digs for one punch (which didnt even conncect) and not kick out Moss and Webster for a fight that carried on.

Further proof that the Jets get absolutely no love from any officials

  77. avatar JesusRevis says:

    * but it ALMOST lasted nearly a minute…..

  78. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

I think pitoitua is better suited as an end, hes really tall (listed 6’8″) and that means he doenst have a low center of gravity. But im hoping for production.

  79. avatar Bent says:

“…there were clearly more pressing needs elsewhere that the team hasn’t addressed (as Bent pointed out) for two years.”

    Right.

They obviously hope that undrafted guys like Turner, Pitoitua, Devito etc can eventually fill these positions of weakness. I actually have more confidence in those guys than I ever did in Henry, Ainge or Garner, but we will see.

I think UDFA prospects are no less of a crap shoot than late round picks in a lot of cases. In fact, because they are long term developmental prospects, these often emerge better than late round picks. (Which is why Bender and Garner were overtaken and dropped). Drafting a guy doesn’t necessarily mean he will be the answer, but of course those guys get drafted because scouts think they are more likely to make it.

  80. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I could not agree with Bent more

i like the Jets targeting a player and drafting him. We have done pretty well so far with that.

We do need depth but do not think a 3rd round NT would have helped the Jenks situation.

  81. avatar Bent says:

JR – Yeah, we were surprised nobody was tossed for that one.

The incident yesterday was unacceptable because Murrell nailed him with a punch after Digs had knocked his helmet off.

I don’t really want to see that out of my team (even though I’m sure he was retaliating to something the Bills guy did).

“You take a swipe at one of our and two of ours will take a swipe at you” – or whatever it was – is empowering and inspirational in a press conference, but when it costs your team field position in a crucial OT game, it suddenly loses it’s luster.

  82. avatar Shamik says:

Sanchez was epically bad, however, remember that Peyton, Brees and countless others looked absolutely terrible and had their fans calling for their heads in their rookie seasons. My solution is this (similar to what I do every damn year): don’t expect another win. Expect the Jets to lose in every terrible way possible. Its what I did during the Buffalo game after the Miami debacle and I slept like a baby. Low expectations are the only way for Mets/Jets/Knicks/Islanders (dear god) fans to survive.

  83. avatar Mark says:

go Rangers, but haven’t given up here yet!!

  84. avatar JesusRevis says:

I will argue against Peyton, but yes 99% of rookie QB’s look awful. I think we all had our expectations raised severely after the first 3 games, when in reality we are on pace to be just where I thought we would; around 8-8

  85. avatar Bent says:

Another example – Ron Brace – went in the 2nd because NT’s are such a premium, although I would only have given him a 5th round grade.

He has 1 tackle and has been inactive three times.

As Bassett suggests, a pick like this is very smart, because when Wilfork is done, Brace might be ready to take over by then (and the Pats have enough picks that they could afford to overpay for a guy like that and wait on him to emerge as a contributor). If Wilfork tore his ACL on Sunday though, he’s unlikely to be able to fill in anywhere near adequately enough to keep their defense at the same level.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Potty have a better career than him though.

  86. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Bent,

It’s an insignificant point, but just something I have been wondering about. I do agree with you about this team mentality, it’s great when approprate, but when youre on the field, you gotta play smart.

I still think the Jets will have a top 10 defense even without Jenkins, our talent level is still elite.

  87. avatar john sec.125 says:

comparing sanchez’s and manning’s rookie years is ridiculous. sanchez just had one of the worst pro qb performances of ALL TIME. he won’t have 26 td passes, but he will have more than 28 picks if this keeps up.

  88. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Who compared the 2?

  89. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    bent
i was thinking about going to a 4-3 too we have the defensive line to do that but we really dont got the linebackers to goto a 4-3…the only way i think it can be done is if scott or harris can move to the outside

  90. avatar Jack says:

    >>Expect the Jets to lose in every terrible way possible. Its what I did during the Buffalo game after the Miami debacle and I slept like a baby.

Me too. I crapped the bed and cried all night.

    That’s went you meant, right?

  91. avatar john sec.125 says:

previous posters were trying to make a point about how poorly some rookie qb’s have played. sanchez played like he was a drunk rookie.

  92. avatar john sec.125 says:

maybe we should have, forgive me, stayed with mangini another year. next year, holmgren, shanahan, cowher, and dungy will all be available. i like rex, but he looks confused. the team is just so undisciplined. he reminds me of chris from family guy on the sideline.

  93. avatar joe c from CT says:

Hey Rex GET MY PICKS BACK FROM MANGINI! WHERE OHHH WHERE IS MANGINI WHEN YOU NEED HIM. REX IS NOT WHAT I THOUGHT HE WAS! HE IS A COORDINATOR AND THAT IS IT. GO BACK TO BALTIMORE NOW!!!!!! AND TAKE MOUTH ALL MIGHTY BART SIMPSON WITH YOU!!!!!!!!

  94. avatar furman77 says:

lol,why are you guys surprised, these are the jets man, come on fellas,we excpect these thinags all the times, only the jets can rush for over 300 yards and still manage to lose the game, lol.

  95. avatar furman77 says:

maybe if the jets move to los angeles, then sanchez can play better in nice weather conditions, lol.

  96. avatar furman77 says:

same old jets, lol, this is sooo funny,im hurt on the inside, but laughing on the outside, but im not surprised at all,we always find ways to lose games,i truly believe that we are cursed, and will never win the superbowl or even get to play one.

  97. avatar Lageman says:

    Thoughts:

    Jenks injury breaks my heart.

Sanchez needs to legitimately learn to sell the play action and to look off the DBs. He telegraphs where he is going. He will learn to do this I’m sure. Pick off Edwards fingertips wasn’t his fault, but the rest was ugly.

Jets do need a draft where they go for quantity and keep a bunch of picks. A gap-filling draft is due and needed, especially with potential cap problems.

The reason I was for Clemens starting year is because the OL is a built to win right now line. I am all for Sanchez getting a year like Manning got. It is too late to bench Sanchez now in my opinion. Once you start your Sanchise, you have to stick with him.

  98. avatar Brendan says:

…still behind the jets in the standings big guy…

The loss of Kris has shattered jets nation as i knew it. Our defense is now back to its 06 & 07 suckiness. And worst of all, it was something out of the control of EVERYONE. There isn’t even somebody to blame for this; and it’s just killing me.

  101. avatar the BIGONE says:

the way the jets played yesterday was pathetic. sanchez throws 6 interceptions, not even stafford threw that many interceptions( and they’re both rookies) . Our D was not great at all. The jets first 3 games were to good to be true. When the saints beat us, thats when the jets lost all there confidence. ehh there’s always next year.

  102. Kris Jenkins loss is gonna hurt our defense considerably. His size and skill are going to be difficult to replace and makes us vulnerable up the middle, so expect to see our opponents attacking with up the middle runs.

Sanchez needs better decision making. Why is he not considering tucking the ball and running with it when the defenders are covering receivers. Seems like picking up a few yards and an occasional first down is a much better decision than trying to force a throw in difficult weather to receivers who are covered. In particular I am thinking about the OT int.

The Black Hole in Oakland sure isn’t gonna be an easy win especially after they are coming off a big win against Philly.

  103. avatar JesusRevis says:

Sanchez seems to refuse to run with the ball even though it seems open so often.

  104. avatar the BIGONE says:

yea, why doesn’t he run, i dont think i’ve seen him run once yet

  105. avatar rythejet says:

just wen i thought it couldnt get any worse…… jesus christttt
