Suicidal Monday Morning Quarterback

sanchez.jpg

Sometimes you just need to vent. This is probably ill-advised, but I just can’t care today.

Here’s what I’m thinking on this rather suicidal Monday Morning. To try and keep this a family thing, I’ve substituted the Mother of All Curse Words

with the first word that came up when I went to a a random word generator: export.

If this rankles you to my writing, makes you stand back in shock, I don’t give an export, because there’s only one day a year I realize that this team won’t make the playoffs, and today’s that day for me. Deal with it. Follow my exporting bad writing after the jump …

What the Export?!?! — If you were to tell me that Thomas Exporting Jones was going to run for a team best in yardage, that the team was going to knock the starting QB out of the game early and that that whiny export Terrell Owens was going to be held to 3 catches for 13 yards, I would be ecstatic. You CANNOT blame the defense for this game, you CANNOT blame special teams for one exporting bobbled snap, look no further than the starting QB who threw 5 INTs with a QB rating of eight point exporting three.

Rex, I Love You, But You’re an Exporting Idiot — Was I the only one who saw him throw down the challenge flag after the referee called that long Thomas Jones run a touchdown? The only way I can describe what he did is like this … ever have a conversation with someone who is just exporting waiting for you to finish talking to say what they want to say? I exporting hate that. That’s what that was like. He stood there, not listening to the ref, and then threw down his challenge flag. I know it didn’t matter but dude, PAY EXPORTING ATTENTION. YOU’RE THE EXPORTING COACH!!!

This Team is Wildly Exporting Undisciplined — Rex chuckled this summer on the first day of practice about a few fights that took place. I’ve watched every snap of every game so far this season, and in six games, I’ve seen more pushing and shoving, tangles after plays than I ever did during the entire Mangini regime. Sure this smacks initially of swagger, but the more you look at it, the more it just seems like childish henpecking. This culminated yesterday in Digs’ wrongful ejection. Marques Murrell took a swing at Derek Fine, knocking his helmet off a play which set the Jets back into the shadow of their own end zone on a special teams play. There’s room for being a bully, but there’s no room for being stupid, and Murrell was that, and it’s Ryan’s culture that allows this sort of thing from Day One. Add in the exporting myriad of penalties, and it’s clear that the passion that Ryan wants the guys to play with doesn’t translate to caring about the details. It’s an exporting childish way to play and coach, period.

Does Mark Sanchez Exporting Care? Does His Coach Care About Him? — I love the kid, but I watched him yesterday look blankly on the sideline as Schotty tried to talk to him, I watched him lock on Braylon Edwards too much, throw a lot of terrible passes, duck while he was chucking .. if that wasn’t the low point of his young exporting career, then I don’t know what is. Nowhere but up right? Isn’t that what Ryan told Sanchez two weeks ago? What does he tell him now? The same exporting stupid cliche? Sanchez threw more completions to the Bills (5 INT) than he did to his own receivers (3 Braylon Edwards) and never even tried throwing a pass to David Clowney. I don’t know what it takes to bench a player in Rex Ryan’s regime, but it’s clearly not 4 INTs and one of the single worst quarterbackings of all time. Un-exporting-real

Don’t Think I Didn’t See You Exporting Quit on That Play, Darrelle — Yes, yes, you’re world class, yes you are elite … all that stuff. And for as great as Darrelle was (after the two early shirt pulling incidents) on the all out blitz play that went for a Bills TD over the middle of the field to Lee Evans, he was the only man close enough to make a play once he broke the tackle, and he just gave up trying to even purse the runner … that was miserable.

How Does the Defense Feel Today — Jenkins is likely gone for the rest of the exporting season, and the team played decently enough to win (mind you, against the exporting Bills and a journeyman backup QB) and your team still lost the game. This is the second game that the defense played well enough to win, but Mark Sanchez crapped the bed for them. How long until you start seeing anonymous quotes in the paper? Not long, I exporting imagine.

Rex Has Misjudged His exporting Team — Ryan continues to stroke his guys’ exporting egos, telling them that they’re talented, special little exporting snowflakes, different and better than the rest of the exporting league. The exporting truth? This team might be talented, but so far, enabling them to read their press clippings and get their egos stroked is going nowhere fast for him. His players might be sad when he is eventually fired, but he’ll still be fired at this exporting rate, eventually.

  1. If Jenkins is actually done, we are completely exported.

  2. 1. Mark Sanchez stinks. He can potentially be the Qb of a winning franchise but he’s not very good. His size is small and I’m starting to think his IQ is lower Beetlejuice from Howard Stern.

    2. Rex Ryan thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. The quicker he realizes this, the quicker he’ll be successful. I’ve never seen a team blitz so much and not have results.

    3. Brian Schottenheimer is an awful play caller. We knew this coming in but isn’t it amazing how he’s still around…he for sure has compromising photos of Woody Johnson…with Mike Tannenbaum…supposedly.

    4. Darrelle Revis let all the talk get to his head. He didn’t necessarily cost them anything yesterday like he did on the Ginn play, however, his play has certainly dropped off.

    5. Are there more overrated defenders right now than Kerry Rhodes and Bart Scott? Do these guys ever make a play????

    6. The offensive line and defensive line depths are starting to cost them. We knew Jenkins can’t play 50% of the snaps, even when healthy and with some of their ages, both lines are seeing severe fatigue- that both helps to sustain drives for the opposition and stop them for the offense.

    7. Do we really consider Dustin Keller an elite TE? I mean really? Does he ever seperate? Can he block our grandparents??

I never rode the wave up with this team and I’m not going to let it get me too far down as well. I had 4-8 wins as an expectation this yr, basically a lower to middle team with no shot at the playoffs. I didn’t like the Sanchez move, still don’t and I think alot of the short term goals are costing this team long term. As I mentioned multiple times- we look everything like the Redskins from yrs back…their short sightedness is starting to show. It’s fun to have the team be so busy but are these the right moves?

  3. I’m going to struggle to keep a straight face the next time I get asked about export duties.

  4. now this is how you rant (sorry Andrew). I agree with pretty much everything here. nothing too knee jerk, just straight-up frustration which is what we should all be feeling this morning.

i’m starting to like the idea of benching Sanchez more. I mean, he doesn’t deserve to play. And we could lose our only good part of the time: the D. (if we didn’t already thanks to Jenkins injury).

believe it or not Francessa made a good point in his awkward TV appearance late last night. Mike’D Up I believe it was called, never seen it before. but he said: benching Sanchez is NOT the worst thing ever. great QBs have been benched early in their careers after stinking it up and have come back to be great. this won’t kill his career if he sits a few games.

  5. Same Exporting Jets.

  6. exporting brilliant!

  7. EXPORT!!!

  8. Can I go back to my original bitterness over the draft day trade now?

  9. What about Rex’s challenge of the punt return. Really? Risk a timeout for a 6 yard difference? Is Brad Childress running our booth review team?

  10. Oh yea- I forgot that. Great article!!

  11. Chris, another thing seems to be the defense gets winded if a drive last more than two series, not just Jenkins, the whole line.

Believe me I am glad the Manidiot is gone, but the two things he got right, on field discipline and conditioning, are badly missing.

The penalties are killing them, and the sooner Rex exporting realizes this the better.

  12. besides all the emotions in which many here would agree with, your points hit very close to the exporting truth.

i think im gonna have to sign off for the rest of the day if i want any chance at saving today’s worth.

  13. Export my life.

  14. Haha- you’re onto something Rudi….www.EML.com

  15. im over it,words can express how i feel i just don’t think Mark is the guy he looks like a pee wee QB out there.

  16. agree 100% … but the biggest thought on my mind, the numero uno issue on this team, is the playcalling. and not even just on offense (although please fire schottenheimer). it’s also the defense in the sense that, when the season started we constantly saw different blitz packages, people coming from all different angles … all of this being a byproduct of the constantly shifting on the defensive line to confuse the opposing offense. am i the only one who has noticed we don’t do this quite that much anymore? the last few games i could have sworn mangini was running this defense. so bottom line? rex, schott, pettine, et al. may be the biggest problem.

ps. disciplined players (which our guys are not) is a function of the coaching duties as well

  17. ok everyone…step back from the ledge.

  18. Too late Brendan, as I type- my face is laying on the pavement…this will hurt for weeks!

Once again, when didn’t have expectations, the Jets drew us in and then right in time- stabbed us in the heart…which by the way, this team has none of!!!

  19. i dont know whats worse, watching the debacle last night feel like it would never end or watching today as Jetsblog readers come out of the woodworks to say “i told you so” about mark sanchez and his, apparently, already completed career path.

  20. I just think it’s a bit premature to start saying Rex is a terrible head coach & Sanchez isn’t the future QB for this team. The kid had a horrendous game, which can’t be said enough. But he has shown positives, and he is a 22 year old rookie. There will be days where he plays like, well, a rookie. Ryan will learn to manage a game better, or he will be run out of town. He’ll realize real quick that this town has extremely sports-smart fans and when he screws up millions of people know it immediately. He’ll learn to be more attentive, or delegate those issues to an assistant to keep track of time, timeouts, challenges, etc.

  21. Hey Rex GET MY PICKS BACK FROM MANGINI! WHERE OHHH WHERE IS MANGINI WHEN YOU NEED HIM. REX IS NOT WHAT I THOUGHT HE WAS! HE IS A COORDINATOR AND THAT IS IT. GO BACK TO BALTIMORE NOW!!!!!! AND TAKE MOUTH ALL MIGHTY BART SIMPSON WITH YOU!!!!!!!!

  22. Schott is the biggest problem. If you watch the interceptions, at least 2-3 of them should of been eliminated just by either bad luck (ala the Edwards tip off his hands into the Bills hands) or bad play calling. Luck we cant control… but play calling is a must fix right now. Schott is the only disgusting piece left of the last era and as long as we have him, we will play like the last era did. Awful, predictable, unintelligent, thinks he is playing Madden, play calling. Bill Callahan needs to run this offense.

  23. I feel just as bad as all the other fans out there – I really got the same old jets feeling yesterday. At least last year we had 12ish weeks of “Hey I think we are pretty good – cant wait to bash the power rankings for having us too low.” This year we only got 5 weeks. However I do think Sanchez can be a very good QB, and this defense has enough talent to be very good (even w/o Jenkins). Theres a reason why people dont expect much from a team with a Rookie head coach and rookie QB. Look at the Giants – Coughlin was on the hot seat and NYers were ready to be done with the Eli era. Now they are a team (even though they lost yesterday) I consider elite. Things change on a dime this week, need to stay positive.

  25. I could care less if Sanchez cries. Favre is a regular waterworks and he’s 6-0 right now. I just want to see Sanchez learn from his mistakes, tears or not. I wasn’t a huge fan of the move up and agreed with Pete Carroll that he should probably have played another year at USC. However, he has shown some flashes and letting him play out the year, come what may, is probably the best way to maximize whatever ability he has.

  26. While I attended what had to be the worst game of football yesterday and have never been so thoroughly defeated as a Jets fan I feel its a little early to start calling for the head coaches job and just like Joe Torre I believe you let your players try and dig themselves out of the hole. However I am going to say something that won’t make total sense now but you’ll understand in a week or two: Thomas Jones is done. He’s just to slow getting to the wholes. And yes I know 210 yards yesterday but I feel fine in saying Leon would have done just as good if not better. Also Pace actually looks like he is being outplayed by VG. SAME OLD JETS and just like the editor I fine myself close to line of dropping this team.

  27. This season is exactly like last year… At least the jets spared me waiting till week 12 to realize it. This year I only had five weeks to get my hopes up.

What a miserable team to watch, and woody you think people are going to pay psl fees to see this, sorry but not me.

  28. Rex is learning on the job too, so I hope, as I know Sanchez will, that he learns from his mistakes.

Being a Jets fan is too much like drinking alcohol…it can make you feel great at times…and it can make you feel horrible, and want to hide in a hole and stay away from everyone…but we always keep drinking.

  29. if it’s a lost year, then let Chez play. Hope for the Colts turnaround from 10 years ago… Peyton was 3-13 his first year.

  30. you guys are nuts. Sanchez is going to be an excellent qb. Just stop it, please stop the gloom and doom talk.

Schottenheimer is an impediment to Sanchez’s growth. His play calling puts too much pressure on the kid from day 1. It worked early but now TEAMS HAVE FILM. So they are learning. So what should you do Schoty? Give the ball to TJ. And it worked. So why get cute with passes when its not necessary AND windy?

Rex Ryan needs to get a reality check if he hadnt gotten it yet. He is green and despite having some great potential, he still has a lot to learn.

Jenkins’ loss isnt the end of the season if we play a tough, smash mouth running game. Keep the defense fresh and keep the time of possession on our side, we can rotate guys in and out of the line and keep a stout run-D. YOU GOT THAT SCHOTTENHEIMER? RUN THE FOOTBALL TO HELP YOUR D!

  31. Oh and someone get Jeff Garcia’s phone number!

  32. I still think Sanchez is going to be good, I mean he’s had some games this year when he’s looked like the real deal. With that said, this guy has to understand the team he is playing for. This offense is based off of the defense. Its kinda like Baltimore was. The number 1 strategy our offense should have is not to run alot, not short passes, but KEEP THE EXPORTING BALL! No turnovers. Its not the end of the world if we have to punt from the 50. The idea is that giving the other team deep in their own territory, let the d do their thing and force the other team to make mistakes, or 1 bad punt or good punt return away from putting the jets in scoring position. This isn’t supposed to be an offense that goes from their own 10 to score. Thats nice and all, but this is a no turnovers offense. Especially on that 5th pick, Sanchez has got to give up on the play, or just tuck it in and run. If we can punt that ball, we can put buffalo with a backup QB at the very worst case scenario at their own 20, and that’s how we’re gonna win the game, not by miracle pass attempts.

  33. They do need to be better conditioned. In that respect I agree. Also, has Bart Scott done anything at all lately?

  34. What happend to the Matt Ryan, Flacco treatment. They were protected…where is Mark’s?? Schotty you are done. Go away.

  35. I’ll take REX every day of the week over Man-exporting genius.

I’d like to see Garcia come in & settle this team down. Or I’d like to see a COLD, WINDY competition between Sanchez & Clemens. When’s the last time Harvard beat exporting USC????????????

  36. The last disgusting piece of the Mangini era is haunting us STILL. Until Schotty is gone, we will play the way we did last year. Predictable, unintelligent, Madden-like playcalling from a nobody OC thats only their because of his last name. Bill Calahan needs to run this offense.

  37. Do you think Schotty is lost without Brad Smith? I’m being half-serious here. It seems the only change of pace he ever shows are those predictable end-arounds, but it’s enough to keep the other team off-balance.

  38. It’s ok that Jenkins is hurt, because we have Howard Green… You know, that guy that Rex was so high on during the Offseason?

    Oh wait we cut him.

    We need Cotchery back. Fast.

  39. Misery – I’ve seen a few people bemoaning the lack of big plays from Bart Scott. I think this is unfair…basically, if Harris is making plays all over the field then Scott is doing his job.

He doesn’t get a free pass because he’s had some bad missed tackles in the last few games, but on the whole, Scott is doing a lot of the dirty work that has enabled Harris (who is on course for the Pro Bowl) to play in space.

  40. Heres another thing to look at besdies the fact that Sanchez threw horrible picks while B-Schott was forgetting the 300+ yards we ran thru the Bills D diring the game.

Teams have gone to school on our blitz packages. BIG TIME!!! When a backup QB and a horrible Bills team figures it out…problem!!!! Umm…. on 3rd down we overload the one side yea we get it. Maybe change that up a little since we havent sniffed the Qb in 2 weeks?

  41. We cut Howard Green because Pitoitua is better than him.

  42. EXPORT NUU FAAOLA!

  43. I tried to export my wife after the game yesterday, but my heart just wasn’t in it.

  44. aka drew,
I agree. Fitzpatrick was so incredibly inaccurate for most the game, it might have been better to have more guys in coverage — could have led to some INTs (oh wait, they would have called defensive holding on those plays anyway)

  45. Vinny- you say things like they’re so easy…when has a Jets defense played smashmouth in the last 20 yrs???

Bart Scott is all hype, the def line is old and now undersized, Kerry Rhodes is allergic to action and we couldn’t hit the Qb if they strapped a bottle of HGH on his back!

Smashmouth and the Jets did not go hand in hand…Rex Ryan is starting to realize that. The way to change it is rebuild via the draft which outside of Harris and Revis, we have been UNABLE to do!! (Sorry Rhodes is a lost cause and Lowery isn’t consistent enough)

  46. Sanchez lost this game and he knows it…. My problem is when the kid is playing that poorly you have to protect him.

i mean come on guys we ran the ball for over 300 yards?? there were time TJ wasnt even on the field for multiple plays in a row. I think there was a time he 7 carries for 150 yards? Feed that guy when he’s rolling.

Just a piss poor job of understanding the freakin game B-Schott.

Yea we get it you look to throw the ball but it was degrees jackass…..with horses just dying to run the ball for 400 yards!!

  47. “Teams have gone to school on our blitz packages. BIG TIME!!! When a backup QB and a horrible Bills team figures it out…problem!!!! Umm…. on 3rd down we overload the one side yea we get it. Maybe change that up a little since we havent sniffed the Qb in 2 weeks?”

I think they did change it up a little yesterday and it cost them a touchdown. They normally overload to the opposite side from Revis, so the QB has to throw that way. The Bills were anticipating this and setting up a (brilliantly executed, I must say) zone blocking scheme, so the Jets ran one to the other side and Sheppard got burned on a quick slant.

I agree it was disconcerting to see them pick it up so effortlessly on a few key plays, but they were dropping off and sending guys from all over the place. It’s risky because it puts a lot of pressure on the corners and they have not coped.

  48. At least Harvard QBs can play in the cold & wind.

  49. Drew – Jones was gassed, but yeah, they should have kept pounding away with Leon and Shonn (who I’m sure were itching to have a go after TJ broke those runs).

  50. Bent, you’re absolutely right about that play, but if Lito takes even a decent angle to Evans there, it’s a 8-yard gain instead of a TD. Still, it does make me wonder how Rex responds to that sort of shifting zone blocking scheme. Does he stick with the overloads to one side? Does he bring more pressure from safeties / CB’s and drop some of the overload guys back into coverage? Will be interesting to see.

  51. As I’ve said in the prior threads, as bad as Sanchez was I don’t think he should be benched.
Schott is the main culprit here. He needs to be removed from his duties.
It’s inexplicable that the ball was thrown more than 20 times. Or even more than 15 times.
22 yr old rookie QB in cold, swirling wind conditions that he has no prior experience playing under, and he has him throw deep balls? Repeatedly? With the Run game clearly working well? WHY? Especially after the 2nd — hell, after the 3rd INT — he continued to call plays that only increased the likelihood of his Rookie QB failing.
All they had to do was call a few screens to Leon, a couple slants or dump-offs, short to medium range, and the game would have had a far different outcome.
How the SCREEN PASS isn’t utilized more often with a rookie QB and play-making RB in Leon is unfathomable.
    NO in-game adjustments whatsoever.
There should not have been ONE play in their gameplan that included a pass over 10 yards — I mean, it’s as if Schott was playing in the Meadowlands under such conditions for the very first time. Makes no sense at all, and only makes your rookie QB look far worse than necessary.
Remove the OC. It’s that simple.

[And Ryan needs to discipline his team, as the game would have been won DESPITE the crappy OC play-calling if not for 2 or 3 back-breaking and stupid penalties]

  52. Yesterday was an abortion. One of the single worst Jet games I have ever seen. It reminded me of a mid-ninties game against the Colts when they would battle in a 6-6 tie. TERRIBLE.

They cannot bench Sanchez, love him or hate him, he needs to be the starter.

If Jinx is gone, the D is done.

I have seen Pop Warner teams that have more solid tackling. Yesterday was pathetic.

I am truly disgusted to be a Jet fan right now. After the Saints game, I looked at the schedule and saw us making the playoffs.

Now? I will be shocked if they do. At least the collapse came early so I can have my Sundays back. I will not be tuning in for Oakland and probably not in for Miami.

    Pathetic.

  53. Guys,

Scott’s job is to take on lead blockers so Harris can fly and crush people. Just like in Baltimore with Ray Lewis, his numbers won’t be nearly as pretty as Harris’ but if Harris ends the season with a ton of tackles and big plays, know that Scott had a lot to do with it.

Also, you can’t run the ball every play. The pass was keeping the Bills from stacking the box, opening the passing lanes. It would be great if we could have a Georgia Tech win where we pass for 10 yards and rush for 350, but this is the NFL and you have to pass the ball in this league just to keep the defense honest. There may have been inopportune times to pass it, but you can’t blame Schott for Sanchez’s awful throws or the receivers dropped balls.

  54. For anyone who was at the game yesterday, wasn’t it completely freezing and ridiculously windy yesterday? It was!

Not that I want to excuse Sanchez’s horrible day, but… what the hell is Schotty calling for deep passes into that wind when our running game was working so well? We have Cotchery out of the game and Sanchex playing in weather he’s never played in before. Run, Run Run!!! We could have easily won this game.

We played most of the game with a lead and still threw… what 30 something passes??? Unnecessary.

  55. P4P – I don’t like to suggest what they should have done after the fact because hindsight is 20-20, but I think they should have just gone to a more vanilla scheme. Their OL was undermanned, so line up and see if your guy can beat their guy. Overall, I’m sure that would have been more successful. I think he was outthinking himself. I like the 46 and the overload blitzes, but they have relied too heavily on them.

When an overload is countered with an overload, then this makes it impossible for a blitzer to get through all the traffic, especially when you’re sending DBs. What it does mean is that there is not much protection on the other side, but it would take some crazy rotation to send a coverage guy from that side and then drop everyone else off to pick up the receivers of the guys who would rotate over. Help defense rotation schemes work in basketball but it’s a bit ambitious to attempt in a football game!

Hmmm. Tricky. Ryan has a much better defensive mind than I do, so I’m sure he’ll come up with some ideas to overcome this and the loss of Jenkins.

  56. Wow you guys can’t seriously be giving up on Sanchez! Did you all forget his first 3 games? And how he led the team to a 3-0 start? And played well enough to win in the Miami game? He had TWO terrible games in his rookie season! He is 22 years old and most QB’s that age are stilll in college. He won the first 3 rookie of the week awards which is pretty damn impressive! Yes, we might not be able to go far with him THIS YEAR, but this certainly shouldn’t change your views on him in the long term. He definitely has the skills and the brains to succeed in this league. All he needs to do is learn not to stare down his receivers, and not to trust his arm so much. Those problems are ALWAYS the case with rookie QB’s! He has only played in 16 college games, and is not accustomed to losing. He has a lot of learning to do, but I have no doubt that he will succeed in the NFL.

  57. Honest question. How many people here actually think…Bart Scott “is all hype”? Kerry Rhodes is a “lost cause”? and that a 2nd year player, Lowery is too inconsistent? (as a third CB, mind you)
and that “outside of Harris and Revis, we have been UNABLE to do…” build from the draft… ????

Lowery’s had some big plays this season, a few bad plays, but ill give you a pass on that one…the rest!? i disagree with them all. and i think reality will back me up.

  58. TruJetFan,
Yeah, it was freezing and the wind was really unpredictable (flags at the top of the stadium blowing west, flags on one goalpost blowing north, and flags on the other goalpost not blowing at all). Both QBs looked lost. Sanchez’s biggest problem looked to be indecision, though. He held onto the ball for a very long time, and some of the sacks he took were almost as bad as the INTs.

  59. Lowery also had our INT yesterday that (at the time) saved the game. And I must have been watching something else because I saw Rhodes making a lot of tackles at or around the line of scrimmage.

  60. I know this is crazy but I would go into the Oakland game and throw no more than 10 times. We already know what traveling out west does (please refer to an embarrassing loss by the Eagles yesterday) Why cant the Jets force us to react in the following way “we ran the ball too much”. Up until now, it has never ever happened. If Schotty wants to shut us up, than he should just run the ball until it fails.

  61. starz31,
Your are 100% correct about the stupidity of those comments. People are just bitter about the loss and looking for something to blame, when in reality, there isn’t really many people at fault. Its hard to blame a rookie QB for making rookie mistakes, and bottom line, that is the only reason we lost. I guess Schotty could be blamed too, but its hard to fault him for asking Sanchez to make some throws he has been making all season.

  62. Brendan- Harris was a beast before Scott got here. And Ray Lewis was the center of the defense, a role that Scott was supposed to inherit in NY.

He may make some quieter plays at times but that is not worth $40m! They could have easily gotten a cheaper version for a role player.

    Scott is overrated, bottom line.

  63. This team needs a defensive line makeover, they are old and not very good. Are there any players in the upcoming draft that can replace a Jenkins? Too bad the draft is is really not set with all the conditional picks that the Jets have up in the air.

Just disgusted with this team they constantly play to the level of talent of the opposing team, never play to their own level, maybe yesterday was their level. At least I didn’t have to wait for the end of the season for the Jets to show their true colors.

  64. I response ot someone saying we dont have a smashmouth running team, really? Last year we did early and it got us a few players into the probowl. The personnel didnt change. The offensive philosophy changed and i hate it. I like having a run game. The flashy passes, wildcat, brad smith at qb, those are nice every once in a while, but to win you need a running game especially with a rookie qb. We have the players, so let’s do it.

Bottom line: every experienced coach and OC knows that to win consistently in the NFL you MUST RUN THE FOOTBALL.

  65. I think a Sanchez benching should be done immediately. It will send a message to the kid.

and…do not get on this kid this early in his career..a benching is a must..but do u remember another kid who came into this town and everybody was asking for his head?? and the coaches head?? yeah his name was eli..look at him now

  66. Dylan –
Schotty is CERTAINLY to blame. It’s his job to take into account varying conditions and make in-game adjustments.
Calling plays the include deep balls in swirling winds is just STUPID — especially after it DIDN’T work the first 3-4 times.
You don’t call the same plays every week; passing plays that work 1 week under certain weather conditions with a certain opponent may not necessarily work the following week. Game-planning 101. Schott knows nothing of it.
He blows, and may be in danger if hampering the rookie QB’s progress at this point.
Instead of calling plays that would minimize potential for mistakes [especially if several mistakes were already made], Schott continues with the poor playcalls and makes no adjustments.
Without doubt, the OC is to blame — at least for the Offense.

  67. I think that without Jenkins, the Jets should switch to a 4-3. We should put Ellis and Douglas at DT, and move Gholston and Thomas to DE. Then we can put Scott and Pace at OLB and Harris at MLB. I think that is definitely our best chance at succeeding. We should be able to stop the run easier, and maybe Gholston can have some more success as a pass rusher at DE.

  68. Vinny- other than Harris- give me one smashmouth defender?

Sorry Jenkins is a beast but you need to stay on the field to be considered smash mouth.

The defense is soft and has been for 20 yrs!

  69. Bet Mr Kraft is wondering if he can revise the blueprints & get us a dome next year?

  70. vurtualife,
Yeah you are right the play calling was very unimpressive. The coaches can be partially blamed for the loss, especially Schotty. I still think that its stupid to blame Rhodes, Scott, and Lowery for the loss, though. They are definitely doing their part to help us try and win games.

  71. I am so exporting happy right now that this website exists so that our beleagured fan base has a true place to exporting vent about the garbage that was yesterday. HOWEVER please remember a few things. Sanchez has NO FRIGGAN CLUE on how to throw in that wind. So pretty please, with an exporting cherry on top, learn from yesterday. He was also throwing to a wideout who has been on the team for two weeks, a lifetime fourth WR who has been cut by other NFL teams, and a TE who is supposed to “stretch the field,” but he doesn’t because he’s not Antonio exporting Gates.
The offense is garbage and banged up. Whether or not Rex starts getting “more involved” in the offense, we are still screwed. This is why organizations clean house. I have to exporting stop right now because I could write a paragraph and I feel like exporting garbage because I sat through a half of that cold abysmal export fest yesterday.

  72. mr. kraft??

  73. i hate days like today..

  74. “Are there any players in the upcoming draft that can replace a Jenkins?”

Players like Jenkins only come along once every few years. Having said that, this is one of those years. Terrence Cody will probably go top five though and unless the Jets really fall off, it would be cap suicide (assuming there’s a cap) to trade up there yet again.

Hopefully, we’ll see over the course of the rest of the season, that this scheme doesn’t necessarily have to have a Kris Jenkins to be successful.

  75. Hey if Sanchez actually turns out to be pretty good in the long run, most of the people on this blog should remember this week and do themselves a favor and root for another team

I can understand being really, really upset but to say he’ll never be good or he cant do this or I TOLD YOU SO after 6 games into his rookie campaign ( 4 decent or good games to 2 awful) is premature and just plain ridiculous. I never blogged before in my life and only really come on this site because basically all my friends and family are Giant fans, but it seems like most of the Jet fans love to point fingers or get off on the Jets misery.

  76. Not sure why the sudden hatred for Scott is developing….The guy does his job for the most part and is a good guy to have on our team. The guy is a huge upgrade over Barton and allows Harris to blitz at will.

I am also a little confused on the Rhodes nonsense. I actually thought Rhodes has done a pretty good job recently especially in run support. Something I thought he has been a little soft at in recent years.

This day is to abuse Sanchez and B-Schott I dont see any other culprits here….

  77. Very similar to last year’s game against Denver in the rain where the Jets did not design many plays meant to use the weather to their advantage…counters, short passes, SCREEN PLAYS.

If in the first half, Mark could have dumped a pass to Leon for a 30-40 yarder, or a short slant instead of 30 -40 yard posts, his confidence would have risen. Why no screen passes? It seemed to be all or nothing yesterday.

Dont make a young QB play “up” to an NFL system so early; make the system come “down” to him, ESPECIALLY in bad weather.

Schott should be fired, or at least have much more instruction by someone who knows something on designing his plays each week.

  78. It is hard for me to find any confidence right now in anything we have done in the last 2 weeks.

Just imagine how the players feel? Rex better find a way to get this team under control…..and fast!

  79. Pretty sure Bob Kraft owns the Patriots.

  80. It dosent matter about weather or wind…..

It has to do with flow of the game and what is working… the fact is the entire Jets nation could see Sanchez and the passing game was struggling except for our OC.

We should have run the ball until the Bills proved they could stop it….Which never happnened. As usual B Schott took chances and got cute when the running game was roilling.

He has done this in the past… when it works he looks (the few times it does) good. But there are way too many times he looks like an idiot in his play calling and understanding the game and its flow.

  81. Don’t Jump!

  82. Drew – All the talking from Scott and Rhodes rubs a lot of people up the wrong way. I can totally understand that. They’ve raised people’s expectations, so when they get criticized, they only have themselves to blame.

Fact is, Scott has been a huge upgrade over Barton (even if it shows up more in Harris’ numbers than his own) and I thought Rhodes actually played very well the last two weeks and was awesome against the Patriots.

  83. Please, SPARE US the Jeff Garcia talk!

  84. We need to export more to save the US economy.

But in all seriousness, Sanchez will learn from this. Schotty might even as well.

Is there even 1 Schotty defender here?

  85. Here’s one. YOu can’t blame Schott for the throws Sanchez didn’t make and the balls the receivers didn’t catch. He rushed the ball 60% of the time. Sanchez was eyeing down receivers, holding the ball too long, and make poor decisions. For every long pass he threw into the wind, there was one or two missed targets on short routes. The play calls weren’t terrible, the decision making was.

  86. Eh, I was afraid to even check this website today to see what was being said. Of course, there’s people who want to fire Rex, put Clemens in as starter, switch to the defense to a 4-3, trade Edwards back for the picks so we can start over next year, and people saying we’re going to go 3-13 now. Sheesh, don’t take this the wrong way, but comments like that make it really really hard to like fellow Jets fans. Teams lose games, you know. Rookie QBs make huge mistakes. You want to see a rookie QB that had a terrible season? Take a look at Eli. They stuck with him.

I will only concede that Schotty really screwed this up. He needs to relax. I don’t know why this guy is calling the plays he’s calling and I don’t think I’ll ever know why. But, when Schotty makes plays (IE the Weatherford fake punt for 25 yards), we love the guy. When he calls stupid plays (IE the Weatherford throw last night), we want to put him in a crate and ship him to Siberia. We are a very up and down team with very up and down fans obviously.

Also, ever notice how Buffalo always seems to screw the Jets up? We watch them blow the game vs. NE week 1, suck for 4 weeks, then beat us. It’s always like Buffalo finds this way to make our lives miserable. I frequently found myself, over the years, reading the scores for other games and seeing Buffalo losing to a team I wanted them to beat. My friends and I usually just scream “Dammit, BUF!” This was a very dammit buf weekend.

  87. The Weatherford “pass” was a botched snap that he tried to make a play out of. It wasn’t a designed play. And even if it was, special teams plays are Westhoff’s calls, not Schott’s.

  88. Y’day sucked, yadda, yadda, yadda, we get it. But let’s get real, when the schedule came out and before the hyperbole started, 3-3 at this point looked ok. Sanchez and Rex will both move this team in the right direction, but obviously not fast enough for all those who like my wife and kids “WANT It NOW”!

Also, who’s team would you rather have today, us or the Bills? Let’s go to the Black Hole and get some redemption on JaMarcus’ big butt…maybe Sanchize just needs a week back home in CA…

p.s. y’day also reminded me of another blast from the past, game in the early 90’s at RFK, equally cold and windy, Redskins 6 Jets 3, but have to admit, at least y’day we didn’t get rained on like that stinker vs. Denver last year.

  89. True, although it was actually a decent snap, he just botched the hold.

I wasn’t expecting Feely to make a 50-yarder into the wind anyway, but…

  90. ya get some lemons, make lemonade!

  91. Yeah, I expected the FG to miss, which made the INT actually a positive play (in my mind). My point was that no one called that play, and that Schotty wouldn’t have been the guy making that call even if they did fake it.

  92. My problem with Schotty is that he didn’t adapt to how the wind affected Chez. I don’t have a huge problem with throwing except when we were going into the wind. I’m not sure Chez made bad decisions as much as he was incapable at cutting through the gusts.

I also agree that Buff always seems to have our #

  93. One last thing. At the time, I thought we should have pooch punted instead of that botched FG. Our D was playing well overall & Buff wd have been pinned inside their own 10.

  94. “…when the schedule came out and before the hyperbole started, 3-3 at this point looked ok.”

Yeah, but 3-3 with no Jenkins for the rest of the year didn’t…

However, I agree with the sentiment of the post. There are teams in far worse shape around the league and Jets teams from the past that have been far worse too. All the things they are struggling with right now (depth, scheme, coaching, QB play) should improve with time.

  95. “Buff always seems to have our #”

Yeah, so do Oakland…who we play next.

I was calling for a pooch punt too! Glad I’m not the only one.

  96. The good thing is Oakland has already won so their urgency is weaker.

  97. If Sanchez couldn’t cut through the wind yesterday, then he was forcing his throws into the wind which is still bad decision making. He should know his own limitations and he has pre-game time to decide what those limitations will be due to the conditions on the field.

  98. Brendan, Yeah I guess I agree-he could have checked down knowing his arm wasn’t capable.

  99. one glaring problem with sanchez is that he holds the ball way too long. he also is very quick out of the pocket. learning on the fly is one thing, but 5 interceptions? against buffalo? un-exporting-believable!!!

  100. Players I would threaten to replace if the draft was tomorrow and I was hired as GM solely based on the fact I was Woody’s best fwiend:

Kris Jenkins: Heartbreaking but we rely too heavily (no pun intended) on a man who’s unreliable. Like Bent mentioned, Bama’s Cody would be the obvious replacement but players like Husker’s Ndamukong Suh who lack his size might make up for it in strength and versatility.

Marques Douglas: Don’t know much about you but since we don’t generate any pressure on the passer with 3 or 4 man rushes, I’m just going to assume you’re not very good. The aforementioned Suh would be an ideal replacement.

Kerry Rhodes: Potential is a hard thing to live up to. You were supposed to be our Ed Reed but you actually look worse than ever. Taylor Mays is similar to your size but bigger, stronger, more aggressive and smarter.

Bart Scott: What was that BS about talking giving you better conditioning? Out of position, doing the Barry Sanders air-hug against players like Ricky Williams and Fred Jackson. A lot of good, big LBs coming out next year. Florida’s Brandon Spikes is a terror and Bama’s Rolando McClain is a sure tackler who can punish in coverage and at the line of scrimmage.

Alan Faneca: Has anyone aged faster in a year? Doesn’t have the speed to get out in front and is only effective when pulling. Looks sad in pass defense against mediocre pass rushers. Callahan, find a replacement and look beyond Nebraska, please.

Damien Woody: Your greatest fault is that I hate seeing that Wayne Hunter export on the field.

David Clowney: No player prays for blown coverage more than this guy, a byproduct of his inability to do anything but sprint down the field. At least Stuckey could run more than 2 routes. Cincinnati’s Mardy Gilyard is a Desean Jackson like speedster who has Clowney’s skill set plus talent.

  101. Howard Green will probably be re-signed in the absence of Kris Jenkins. He’s a body to plug into the line. Not much talent or technique.
Beating up Bart Scott seems senseless. His errors are typically because he over commits trying to do too much in a defense where a lot of guys are still learning their roles.
If anyone in the secondary deserves any blame, it’s Lito Sheppard, who was rusty and a step slow. Just because Revis happened to be in the area doesn’t mean he had the angle to catch Josh Reed with a head of steam.
I can’t blame Sanchez. I’ve had the night to think about it but I still can’t do it. Parcells used to talk about young players as still having diapers on. That’s how they ought to be treated. If he’s gonna get thrown into the fray without any diapers on, who’s to blame if he fails, him or the coaching staff? And, while we’re on the subject, it is my considered opinion that a quarterback can only have success if he has three reliable passing options. For evidence, look at Brady before, and now that Welker is back healthy. By any standard, Sanchez had one reliable option yesterday. I don’t know what was going on with Keller but he failed to extend both arms on one play, then flat dropped another third down pass. I don’t know what happened to Clowney. Somebody with tape of the game from an end zone view will have to tell us. But the kid, IMO, spent all afternoon looking for his one reliable receiver, Braylon Edwards. That’s a recipe for failure.
As for the offense, my big problem yesterday was that you had to make Buffalo stop the run CONSISTENTLY. Schottenheimer seems to feel that you can’t just run it down another team’s throat. Yes you can. It’s been done to us in the past by hall of fame coaches. We were ripping off big chunks consistently. Schotty, however, too often reasoned like this: First down – seven yard run, second down – run for no gain, third down – I must pass because the run won’t work. Time and time again he abandons what’s working because he values the mixture of plays, or some other such homily. IMO, football is about imposing your team’s will on the other team. If the offense is ripping huge holes in another team like it was yesterday, why pass, especially on a wet, windy day with a rookie quarterback? Obviously you can’t run on every play. But, let’s stop trying to finesse our way down the field.
Note: The Baltimore Ravens are 3-3 and they gave up 33 points yesterday.
As for beating up TJ, yesterday, I humbly apologize. My blood was up.

  102. scott and faneca are untradable / uncuttable. no one would take their contract, and cutting them would be a huge cap hit (if there is one). we are stuck with these guys

  103. RE-POST==UNREADABLE WITHOUT SOME WHITE SPACE

  104. whats kerry rhodes doing wrong? he isnt doing enough but nothing wrong

  105. i’ve said it before on this site, but the defense is not the problem. it’s the offense. HOWEVER, the defense has some serious issues and like the offense i feel like much of it is play call related. first couple weeks we were reeking havoc on opposing offenses with constantly shifting on the line, multiple blitz packages, different looks, etc. etc. the last few games we’ve seen this only here and there. WHY? WHY? as much as i’m frustrating with guys like scott, rhodes, and many others, we weren’t saying that 3 weeks ago.

  106. At least half of his interceptions are entirely due to the fact that he ignores the value of the run when coverage is tight. During the last 3 INTs, Sanchez had a vast open space in front of him to run in. He needs to weigh the value of the run much higher if he is going to be a good NFL QB. He’s trying to force it instead of taking what the D gives him.

  107. agreed, jetsfanw&l, sanchez had lots of room to run and instead threw. why? i dunno, my guess is that it has a lot to do with his hesitation and trying to do what schott is asking him to do. he should be letting his football instincts guide him.

  108. Guys, after last week’s game everyone wanted to cut Thomas Jones, and everyone loved Mark Sanchez. This week, everyone wants to cut Mark Sanchez and put TJ in Canton.

Sanchez had a disastrous game, but it was only one game, the sixth of his career. I’ve seen enough of Sanchez at this point to be pretty confident he’ll be fine for us long-term, and so have the rest of you.

Schotty is awful, and he should go, but we all knew that already.

Ryan is terrible at in-game strategy, but let’s remember that it’s only his sixth game as well. Once he realizes that his job is more than just player motivation and drawing up blitzes (and granted, he should’ve realized that long ago, but the guy is a football player in coach’s clothing, so what did you really expect?), we’ll see how he actually does making in-game decisions. His fourth-down decisions, at least, have actually been pretty good, in my opinion.

Now having said all that, without Kris Jenkins, this season is over. It was fun while it lasted, but now we have to get Sanchez the reps for the future and focus on drafting some defensive help. Thomas, Douglas, and Ellis should all be thrown out ASAP, along with Faneca and Woody. How we’re going to do that without our 3rd-5th round picks, I don’t know. The gamble of trading depth for very good players fails once Jenkins goes down, just as it failed last year when Jenkins and Favre got hurt (but still played). On the one hand, I like the strategy of building a team where the best-case scenario is Super Bowl. On the other hand, I would love to accumulate depth so that we had a certain baseline of competence every year. Now that we have our QB and a number of other studs, maybe we can start doing that.

  109. I agree that without big jinks the rest of the season looks pretty bleak. The d might’ve held their own against buffalo without jenks, but won’t be able to against a real offense.

    The penalties are ridiculous.

Thanks to pound4pound to writing one of the funniest things I have ever read on this blog. I exporting LOL’d!

  110. I just read that the Jets had 6 penalties in OT! 6!!!!!
    WTE!!! (i.e. WTF!)

  111. I feel so exporting disappointed and it’s only week six. At least last year they waited until week nine to export me.

  112. I’m not going to defend B-Schott…..But I don’t care how well your running the ball you cannot just keep running the ball and not pass. If you were watching the same game I was they were poorly thrown balls or Sanchez was locking into his WR….1yr-2yrs ago we wanted a QB that could go up top and wanted us to throw those balls from time to time. Well now they do it…And if you know anything its that if your running the ball and they are stacking the line you can go deep with ease. You have to throw more than 10 times if you want to win no matter how well your running the ball and even if your defense is lights out. Look at last years rookies they were throwing in the 15-25 attempts range. I feel snachez should have been pulled after his 4th interception….Put clemens in for the remainder of the game that is all then go with Sanchez in Oakland….I just want to send the kid a message….thats all he will be a good QB but you have to be accountable and you have to learn from your mistakes….I felt as though he just went back on the field and did the same things over everytime….that has nothing to do with play calling or defense. You can’t lock on to a WR and you can’t force throws that are there, throw the ball away! Also you cannot take a 14yard sack..

  113. He’s a rookie. Honestly, did you think he was going to come right in and lead this team to the Super Bowl? Jeez, have some faith. He’s 22 years old and is learning. There are very few exceptions. Mark will be fine.

  114. Bassett,

That had to be one the funniest exporting things I have read in a while. Between the article and some of the exporting posts, it changed the tone of exporting bad day.

That being said, The jets gave us three Exporting wins we didn’t expect in August and three exporting losses we didn’t expect 4 weeks ago. The up and down of jets fan.

  115. Guys…trust me, I get the frustration. We have all seen sooo many Jet games like we saw yesterday. BUT, let’s all get a grip. Sanchez is a rookie. He’s 22 years old. Since it seems necessary at this point, can we allow him to fail like Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning and many others have had to fail in year 1 without attempting to run him out of town? Good grief! Yeah…the annual losing fest is hard to deal with, but allow the kid to “fail forward” like so many has done before him. If not, we fans are just as responsible as anyone else for the culture of losing and being bad losers as the team we are imploring to win.

  116. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  117. I agree that we should not get too down on the team right now. We have rookie coach and a rookie quarterback.

Just to throw some stats out there, through Peyton Manning’s first 6 games, he had 6 TD’s and 14 INT’s!!! Now I’m not saying that Sanchez is Manning, but look where patience got the Colts. Give him some time. I want a championship, not another quarterback shuffle.

  118. What I’m bummed about is not Sanchez. The kid’s a rookie, and we knew he was going to have games like this (okay, maybe not QUITE like this).

What really gets me, and I go back to the Matt Robinson days, is the stupid exporting coaching decisions (Red flag for six exporting yards? REALLY, REX?), or the atrocious, incredibly exporting moronic play calling (which really has been going on for about 3 years now, and I’m looking at YOU, Schotty (Mr. “I should be a exporting head coach by now!”)). The undisciplined play (If I see Ihedigbo make one more stupid exporting foul I’m going to punch HIM in the exporting head).

This, youngins, THIS is what we mean by SOJ. You can only take so many losses over the years to teams like Buffalo. I can remember soooo many. It gets really harder and harder after so many years. I totally understand the Ed(itors) pain from the Dolphin loss (which many of you excoriated (look it up) him for).

By all means, continue to support the team. I will also. I can’t help myself. I’ve loved this team for so long, I can’t stop now (sorry Otis). Just remember, sometimes, love is unrequited.

  119. Schotty threw Sanchez under the bus in the Buffulo game. The offensive play calling is truly unimaginative and does not adapt to the ever changing “chess” game the other team is playing nor to your strenghts or anything else…Schotty should have not been retained and should be fired. If Sanchez survives this mentally I wil be very, very glad and also pleasantly surprised. He is an exporting rookie for god sakes! However, two very disturbing trends that will only result in mounting losses: 1) stupid/penalties (showing little if any dicipline), and 2) missing makeable tackles in the open field (apparently the defense can only tackle the QB that’s if they even get to him).
Well, at least it lasted three games…no biggie. I predict 5-11. If any of you had any doubt: Jets will lose at Oakland!
At this point, Sanchez should start the rest of the season. Let him learn. Of course, if Schotty keeps calling the plays Sanchez will be scared for the rest of his football life and will be just a shadow of his promising potential. But what can I say that’s our J-E-T-S!!!!

  120. Various thoughts –

    1) A Rex rookie mistake:
Rex locked on Sanchez right at the top at the draft/mini-camp, the same way that Sanchez locks onto receivers. KC in camp had the same chance Clowney had in yesterday’s game. Slim –> None. Perhaps not wise for a brand, spanking, new freshman Head Coach just walking through the door to take over a long-time, snake-bitten franchise. Keeping all options open might be thought of as a good thing.

    2) Bassett, Bent: Any chance of getting a clip of the play with the punches in it? I’d like to see for myself what Murrell was up to. I “know” I saw Digs throw a punch at the guy with no helmet. I’d like to see it again for my own process. It sure looked like Digs was the guilty one out there.

    3) Anybody know if Rex has spent that final timeout yet today?

    4) Someone please explain the concept of videotape to Rex. In camp, he repeatedly said on camera that the Jets would “ground and pound” to protect Sanchez. So everyone just planned on having 53 players in the box. Voila! No ground game. Then, he began to overuse the same blitz techniques, and again, teams had plenty of film on it. Voila! No pass rush. The rest of the league can, in fact, look at something the Jets do and game-plan against it. So, it’s up to Rex et al. to adjust.

    5) Rex is going to have to forego some of that HC paycheck if he’s only going to be a DC. His one-dimensional approach to staffing the sidelines — delegating everything that’s not DC — is allowing teams to adjust at will since no one on the Jets sidelines has responsibility for the Big Picture. It’s one thing to give your coaches great latitude, and another to have almost no clue as to what they’re doing. We’ve been thoroughly out-head-coached so far this year.

    6) Rex still needs a bench coach.

    7) Just what happened to Pace’s Game in Vegas? And why did it stay in Vegas?

    8) And, aside from The Punch(es), was Pace’s penalty the most hurtful / painful of that sad, long conga-line of penalties?

    9) Rexy seems to have misplaced his Sexy. Rex’s stunned pressers are slowly starting to look like Herm’s. Now’s the time for Rex to show his leadership, and not look like any other coach who can’t take a punch.

    10) Ya think the rush to buy those PSLs slowed up any over the last three games, compared to the first three?

    11) Good luck, Kris. Heal fast. And please stay around the locker room. This team needs you THIS year.
