Jets Add More Depth to the Line
With the loss of Kris Jenkins for the season, Howard Green has returned and Antonio Garay (journeyman practice squadder) have been signed by the Jets. Green although released last week, was a player who the team was obviously going to re-sign once a roster space cleared, as he was a Ryan guy, and the loss of Cotchery and Smith last week precipitated the need to promote Woodhead to the active roster for now.
Green has shown flashes during the preseason, but at 6-2 320, he’s not ideally big enough to play a classic 3-4 NT and the same is true for Sione Pouha. Although I’m sure they’ll be asked to play nose some, the Jets would be wise to ask these guys to play more a two tackle scheme, that is, if they want to stop the run.

Ugh what a sad day. No big trade, just a signing of two large meatbags. I hope the running game will improve and sanchez will get himself under control, we need to control time of possession in order to win games now, gott akeep that defense fresh as can be.
With all the hype that Rex created at the beginning of the season, I think in a way brainwashed fans to think that the team was a lot better than they actually are. I do not blame him for doing this and it psyched the team up to have a fantastic start. but here we are back to reality. Rookie QB, Rookie coach, some tough injuries, and a depressed fan-base. I highly doubt they will make the playoffs. As long as Sanchez and Shonn Greene make some strides this year I consider it a decent season.
Injuries happen, nothing we can do about it. There are no good free agent DT’s out there right now, plain and simple.
Look on the bright side, at least were not bringing back Dwayne Robertson lol
I’m always all for trades, but in this scenario i’m happy the Jets didn’t make a desperate move at the expense of our future. Kris Jenkins is a great player, probably the most valuable guy on our defense not named Darrelle Revis, but Rex Ryan has a system with proven success, he should be able to account for the loss by manipulating schemes and plugging guys in different spots. I still have full confidence we will finish with a top 10 defense, my concern is the offense – limit the turnovers, water down the play book and different formations, and just run the damn football.
I’ve said before and i’ll say it again, this week at Oakland give TJones 25 carries, Leon 15 and Shonne Green 10. Lets pound it at the Raiders 50 times and dare them to score on us.
The raiders are going to dink and dunk us all over the field, that is all they can do. We will have a tough game out there, no gimme’s in this league. By the way their D is pretty good.
Have been saying this for weeks. We should be running the ball 70% of the time unless someone stops us.
We have 2 legit backs and a kid we picked up in Greene with bigtime potential.
This is the major reason for not trading T Jones. We should have all three guys rolling to protect this kid. Then next year TJ can leave and we can open the play book up a little for Sanchez with Leon and Greene sharing the load.
Not sure what is more important to Jet fans….The protection of our franchise QB or a 6th round pick or our aging ( but still productive ) RB?
Right now the Jets are first in the league in rushing attempts and 2nd to last in passing attempts per game.
Tell schottenheimer not the fans we need to run more consistently.
I dont think TJ is going away next year because his contract is cheap (1.4 mil right?) and he’s healthy and producing. Why let him go? If we have a solid draft and pick up good o-line and d-line prospects, we can keep this guy too. Sorry, Shonn Greene has potential but also cant get himself minutes. I wonder why. Maybe because hes gets hurt taking off his skirt.
Cabras, I’d be very upset if the Raiders were to “dink and dunk” us down the field, Jamarcus Russell has thus far completed only 45% of his passes.
That being said, the Raiders playing against the JETS is probably a golden opportunity to get Jamarcus on track, and I expect him to have a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
Brendan…
I understand what the stats say…the fact is it not consistent enough ……
This has been a B-Schott problem for years. Understadning the flow of the game. Especially when our defense is pretty good…..punting is not such a bad thing when your rookie QB is throwing picks intot he wind
The guy Garay that we added to the practice squad, he’s a Jersey guy who won the the state championship as a heavyweight wrestler. He was a wild animal that crushed everyone in the state, including in the finals. i was a high school wrestler at the time, and knew the guy that Garay decimated in the finals (and THAT guy had crushed everyone else, so i was blown away with how easily he got handled). he continued thru some of his time at Boston College and was successful on the football field and wrestling mat. he broke his ankle his senior year (when he was team captain) against VTech but still ended up getting drafted.
obviously he’s not dominating the pros, grinding it out now on the practice squad, but he’s got balance, strength and knows leverage, so maybe he can learn a thing or two from the big rhino jenks. and help us out later this year.
jersey represent.
Well, what I’ve seen for most of the season is TJ running into a brick wall. The O-line was struggling and teams were stacking the box with 8 or 9 guys. Teams forced Sanchez to beat them, and he did for 3 weeks. Now teams have started backing off, and we just ran wild for 318 yards. We don’t know how many times Sanchez audibled out of running plays. I do know that the play calls weren’t as bad as everyone here makes them seem. Yes, Sanchez threw 5 picks, but most of them were forced throws when he had easy dumpoffs to throw to. I’d fault Schott more for not having Sanchez mentally prepared than for his playcalling.
As to the defense I think a 4-3 is really the only way we are going to consistently stop the run….it also allows players like B Scott, Gholsten and Ellis to play more natural positions and maybe make a lot more plays
It will hurt some players like Pace at DE and some of the DL that will have to rotate in at DT but it might be the only option to win games.
Green, Pouha, Devito, Douglas, Pitoitua all rotate along the line.
Brendan
If they are allowing Sanchez to continually check out of running plays when we are rolling a 300 spot on the Bills in a 30 mph wind storm then…..we have a much bigger problem than we think.
I just think the witch hunt mentality is a little much after 6 weeks. No one was complaining about Schott when we were 3-0.
Why didn’t they just draft Ron Brace?
Not sure what witch hunt your reffering to….the fact is I could have run for a 100 yards against the Bills Sunday and for some reason Sanchez is throwing the ball 30 times when it was clear from his first pass it was not going to be his day.
I am not one of these B-Schott haters. I praise him for a great game called and call him out for games like Sunday. The problem has always been his understanding when somethingis working stick with it.
I dont need this guy trying to invent the wheel in a game like Sunday with those conditions. get the offesne and the kid under control….if not we lose games like that
drafting ron brace would have been great.
but so would drafting ed reed.
bryan thomas is the bane of my existence.
I’m already looking at the 2010 draft….maybe Terence Cody of Alabama (6′5, 380 NT run stuffer at Alabama)?
its not a witchhunt. This guy is going to stunt the development of our future QB. We cant mess this up like the 49ers did with Alex Smith. We need this kid to come along and become what he can become an elite qb. He has the footwork, good hands on the football, can take a hit and has a strong arm. We cant let the coaching derail him. I dont like this guy and he reminds me of PAUL HACKETT. Remember him?
Pick Six…
BT over Ed Reed almost ranks up there with my Kyle Brady over W Sapp…..nightmares
DSmizzle,
Spoken like a true Jet fan,
Jamarcus has a breakout game against us!
The Eagles got dinked and dunked and used their TE in patterns to keep the pressure off of Russell, On D they used a great scheme to keep McNabb guessing. The 3,000 mile trip, plus the lack of confidence on this team is worrisome. Oh and the injury to Jenkins….ouch
The Raiders were able to do that to the Eagles becasue the Eagles have like 4 LBS on IR and were playing a 40 yr old Trottier to cover the TE.
I am alot more worried about the Raiders D then J Russell hitting 40% of his screen passes
AKA Drew,
The witch hunt I’m referring to is when the team hits a rough skid people hop on here to talk about who should be fired. Before last week the teams that fired their O-Coordinators before the season had like 2 wins combined (3 teams). Firing an offensive coordinator midseason on a team that is playoff caliber is completely unrealistic and probably would hurt this team more than help it.
Vinny,
Schott taught Drew Brees and Philip Rivers while in San Diego. I think he knows what he’s doing when it comes to QBs. Sanchez is still a rookie and when he’s in the game, Schott can’t make his decisions for him. I have faith that Schott can bring along Sanchez, it’s just a matter of how long it will take.
Cabras, Zach Miller caught 6 passes for 139 yards. If my memory serves me correct from the Week 6 highlights, he made a couple huge individual plays which involved blocking downfield and breaking a tackle or two.
Aside from these 6 completions for 139 yards, he had 85 passing yards on 22 passes, for an average of 3.8 yards per completion, and was 11 of 22 passing, for 50%.
That’s not “dink and dunk”. That’s being horrible all game long and having 1 or 2 big plays (one of his receptions was for 86 yards), so aside from that play Miller had 5 receptions for 53 yards.
Let’s not make this performance by Jamarcus Russell to be the classic frustrating Chad Pennington performance (when he is effective against your team).
*3.8 yards per attempt.
I remember in the Oakland game last year Russel actually looked pretty good against us. I hope it’s not a repeat performance.
Brendan
I am just sayong I have never called for B-Schott’s head. He frustrates me with his play selection
Buttle always says on SNL that “you pass to score and you run to win.” Sanchez has to pass adequately for the Jets to score more than 13 points. On Sunday, I did not think Sanchez tried to force any passes that were intercepted, besides the ill-conceived bomb in the wind. The rest were just bad passes with terrible ball placement combined with poor decisions. Four of the INTs were on passes to Edwards and, IMO, Sanchez’s ball placement was way off. Edwards is 6-3, Sanchez needs to place the ball high for Edwards, who will either have a chance to make the catch or will be interfered with. Plus, I keep on harping on the fact that if Hartsock doesn’t hold on 3rd and 5 at the Buffalo 24 in OT, the Jets likely win the game. There is no excuse for holding on a running play…NONE! I’m willing to accept growing pains with Sanchez, for now, but veterans making dumb mistakes just can’t happen.
It’s always easy to blame the Offensive Coordinator when your QB throws 5 interceptions. It’s always easy to blame the GM when a draft pick is a bust, it’s always easy to blame the coaching staff for not preparing the players; when things go wrong there is alays someone to blame, rather than pointing fingers, we should look at the team as a whole. Rex, Shotty and Sanchez are all responsible for what goes in with the offense, no 1 is to blame, blame all of them.
We could all make predictions, but all I am saying is we tend to play down to our opponents level, and this game could be one of those. I hope we wake up and find the team that played in the first 3 games. Oakland is going to try to pound us w/the run, and throw short passes. We seem to have trouble getting off of the field on 3rd down. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Jesus:
You keep calling for Rex’s pound ‘n ground, pound n’ ground, fifty (50) times a game? What will happen is they wil turn into ground per pound very quickly then what, back to the rookie?
You must remeber that other than D’Brick and Mangold the rest of the OL and T Rich are NOT spring chickens.
Cabras,
Oakland only runs the ball for 88 yards per game, and their 3.3 ypa average is horrible. They are also at the bottom of the league in rushing defense, while the Jets are second in the NFL in rushing offense. If anything, this game is taylor made for the Jets to get back on track. Pound the ball, win the time of possesion, have Sanchez make a few throws here and there, and dominate against against a far inferior team. Oakland shouldn’t be able to move the ball very well on us either. Hopefully what “should” happen will happen, but hey, this is the Jets we’re talking about.
I do agree that the Jets struggle to get off the field on 3rd downs, which is a direct result of giving up too much yardage on 1st and 2nd down. We have to be more stingy against running plays on 1st and 2nd down so we can put Oakland and their horrendous QB in difficult 3rd and long situations, and then you know whats coming, a monster blitz.
AKA..Drew
the worst part is we drafted BT while we had Ellis AND Abraham still.
and had let my man victor green go… went thru reggie tongue, damien robinson, all those sucky safeties. i’ll never forgive bradway for that. not ever.
kyle brady was a hlluva stomach punch too.
but NO MORE.
now, NOW we’re a team that makes GOOD decisions. a new era if you will.
i’d love Cody, but can’t imagine we’re going to draft high enough to get him.
Hank,
It’s more a question on timing rather than focusing on a number of rushes. For instance, if the Jets pick up good yardage on 1st down, there is no excuse for not running on 2nd and 3rd down. The pass plays on 2nd and short and 3rd and short need to stop.
I’m not concerned about our offensive line wearing down due to pounding the ball. Fanaca and Woody may not be spring chickens, but they still need to do wat they are getting paid for. Fanaca needs to start earning his contract.
I have to say, drafting Bryan Thomas over Ed Reed was worse than choosing Kyle Brady over Warren Sapp.
Bryan Thomas was is far from being a guy who JETS fans should still be all over, all of the time. He made one very controversial (yet honest) comment about his work ethic prior to his worst year, and he’s been killed for it ever since.
Its as if it would be better if he never said anything at all, and we just KNEW the truth. But once he admitted to falling into a trap many players before him had fallen into, the criticism never ends.
I was calling for Schotty’s head for a while, but I think Jesus is right. It’s so easy to blame the OC for every loss. I do think Schotty has gotten better over time.
Brendan;
Did you notice how Drew Brees and Phil Rivers EXPLODED once Schottie was NOT there anymore? just sayin’…
As for Bryan THomas;
we could have done ALOT worse. Look at detroit and oakland just for starters. He is an OK player, serviceable and can tackle. Once his contract is up he’s out the door, so whatever, its next year and we have depth in that position if Gholston continues to innch along.
Drafting that dude from Alabama seems like a great idea if he falls to us. Someone mentioned him in a thread yesterday and i watched some highlights, he can be a monster maybe even better than Jenks…
Dsmizzle,
until BT wins a defensive POY award, and makes a habit of causing turnovers, scoring touchdowns, and blocking punts, then he will remain on my bad list.
not his fault at all. dam you bradway. i don’t care about anything he said.
there is just no way he should have been a 1st round draft pick over ed reed. especially when we had 2 probowl DEs and were desperate for a safety at the time. i remember espn showing ed reed hilights during the draft coverage (they were all sick) and talking about what a great fit he was going to be for us….sigh…
and when we gave BT the 5 year $25 mil extension a season or two ago i cried inside. and maybe a little outside.
Ed Reed and BT are totally unrelated to each other.
BT is BT. It was he who was drafted by the JETS, the JETS decided to draft him.
He had no control over that. He has been a decent player, at times making very important contributions.
Any team that selected a player in front of Ed Reed can say the same thing. BT probably is better and has done more in the NFL than many of the players selected in front of him.
David Carr
Joey Harrington
Wendell Bryant
Donte Stallworth (extremely unreliable prior to his traffic incident)
William Greene
TJ Duckett
Players fall through the cracks in the draft.
Is it reasonable for other teams to suffer constantly because Leon Washington fell to the 4th round? They had more than 1 chance to get him?
excellent point dsmizzle. I would have jumped eyeballs first onto a rusty spike if we drafted wendell bryant.
Dsmizzle,
I understand your point, its the same as saying “why didn’t we draft Tom Brady? We had 7 chances at getting him”
But the difference is, the Jets already had 2 young D-Ends and they needed a safety, which is why picking Bryan Thomas can be criticized. It’s not just the fact that the Jets passed on a great player, they passed on a great player who plays a position they needed to fill.
D Smizzle
The problem was we needed a safety not a OLB when we passed Ed Reed.
The Brady thing hurt me the most because i was there. The only time I was at the draft and will never go back after I was chanting “We want Sapp” and then took Brady.
Sorry jesus … I just basically re-posted what you said 20 mins earier…lol
Jesus:
I really don’t understand your reasoning when you say “it’s more about the timing than the amount of rushes” Fifty times is fifty times. Also,
The problem is you should be concerned about the OL wearing down. If you remember last years collapse during our last five games ( I know all about farve) we ran the ball over 50% of the time to no avail !!! If we got 80 yds per game was a lot, with the same line we have today !!! I remember one time beign stuffed TWICE on 4th and what, one?
That tells me they were running out of gas!!!!
Is the late, great Duane Robertson so awful that he cannot be resurrected to back-up duty? He may be just as productive as Gholston……..
Hank,
I’m asking for more rushes AND better timing. It needs to be a combination of both.
I’m sorry but I still blame Brett Favre for our collapse last year, not the offensive line. I am not concerned with this line wearing down, and if they do, then it is time to sign some new lineman.
All good Drew. Great minds think alike
Favre had his part, but the implosion of the D was at least as big a factor in last year’s collapse.
Subwayfare:
It was a combination of factors with Farve beign the catalyst and mostly responsible!!
The defense got no help from their old phony QB, who was almost always giving the opposing teams offense excellent field position with his “lets throw it up and see what happens” interceptions.
I’ll be the first to admit that I was ecstatic about getting Favre and I was a victim of drinking the kool-aid, but it’s clear he blew the season for the Jets.
People can pile onto the goat of their choice for last year’s collapse. All I’m saying is the barnyard was well stocked.
JR – The trouble with deciding in advance how much you are going to run the ball is that the other team can load up on the run and stop it and if they do that, then the Jets have to show they can pass. At least it won’t be so windy this week, but teams would be wise to continue to stack the box. What if 45 carries means 15 three and outs?
That certainly seemed to be what happened in the Buffalo game. Yes, the Jets got a ton of yardage, but (as often happens when teams stack the box) this was made up largely of several big plays (because there are fewer people at the second level).
Schottenheimer has been widely criticized for his playcalling, but having gone back over the play-by-play, it’s difficult to see what he could have done differently. If it’s second and four and you run and don’t get the first down, then can you expect to get the first down running on third and four? The Jets passed the ball 29 times but many of them were in situations where they had to pass – and maybe situations where the Bills stacked the box, so the pass was the best option.
Sure, the Jets averaged 8 yards per carry, but take out Jones’ two big runs and he only averaged 3.7. Take out Leons’ two big runs and he only averaged 3.1. If the Jets are getting stuffed most of the time and only breaking the occasional long one, what do you call on 2nd down?
Similarly, with the box stacked, short passes are unlikely to be too effective. Jones and Leon combined to go 5-63, but that included a 33 yard gain when a great block by Brick enabled Leon to get to the second level. Apart from that they weren’t getting to the second level. One other pass nearly got Leon killed and TJ dropped one that appeared to be going nowhere. Other than the big play by Leon, 6 passes to the RBs netted just 30 yards. The only passes that were going to pick up significant yards were downfield, but these were made trickier by the winds.
I expect to see the Raiders try to stack the box and make Sanchez beat them. We can’t expect whoever Nnamdi covers to do much, so the pressure will be on the others to step up. At least it won’t be so easy to load up on the short to intermediate routes because Sanchez should be able to throw downfield without the swirling winds.
I would like to see them go run-heavy this week, with all that said. Wear the defense down early, even if it does mean several first half punts and then hopefully get the lead so that you can keep the clock moving. The average doesn’t even need to be high, as the first 3 games showed. Just don’t turn the ball over and hopefully the defense can force some.
Bent:
I have only been able to watch two Raider games this year and both were run heavy slug fests.
We can expect the Jets not to be greeted nicely in the Black Hole. Rex MUst prepare his Gladiators for a fight to the deat !!!!
Rex is going to get what he wished for since the “kissing the rings”, you slug one of ours, we take out two of yours” preseason schtick!!
No excuses Rex, no BS. Scott, no Hallow words “Hallowood Kerry Rhodes”!!!!
