Murrell, Ihedigbo Suspended

by Weeks on October 21st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Many of you might have seen James Ihedigbo and Marques Murrell go off on Derek Fine? Yes? Well, Rex Ryan said that we would see about their punishment earlier in the week and Marques and James were finally handed their punishment today by the Jets front office.

New York Jets safety James Ihedigbo and linebacker Marques Murrell were each fined $5,000 by the NFL for their roles in a scuffle with Buffalo’s Derek Fine.

Jets spokesman Bruce Speight confirmed the fine Wednesday, and said coach Rex Ryan plans to make both players inactive and not travel for New York’s game at Oakland on Sunday.

    good job by Ryan.
Ryan is going to be here for a number of years and its good that he puts the hammer down early on.

  2. avatar Kentucky Jet says:

They should have been cut! Hitting a guy with no helmet from behind is chicken shirt! He ought to join the ARMy is he wants to fight! MURRELL should know better! He belongs in Oakland in the Black Hole filled with goons and gobllins in black costumes!

  3. avatar jlb0183 says:

Im suprise with ihedigbo, I wouldn’t think he would do something like that, Ryan should somewhat see some light in this, because Murrel was being attack and his teammate was there, ” take out one of ours and we’ll take out 2 of urs” isn’t that his motto

  4. avatar Bent says:

I agree with the decision, although what would he have done if it had been two higher profile players?

  5. avatar mole57 says:

Not making them fly to Oakland is a punishment?

  6. avatar Electric Ham says:

I was at the game and haven’t seen any clips of this anyone have a link?

  7. avatar fonzie says:

Ryan is only hurting his team by deactivating these two players who excel in special teams. The blame should be put on Ryan ultimately for not putting his foot down on westhoff. When Mangini was head coach of the jets, how many times the jets team fake a punt in a game. I can’t remember. So against the dolphins on Monday night two fake punts show that Westhoff wanted to call those plays but Ryan simply knew they were gimmicks that may not work. Luckily they worked but they showed pure desperation. Ryan loves his video game view playing with real chips. Lets hope he doesn’t cause too much more damage to the team.

I totally agree with Rex. Both these players cost the team. There is a BIG difference between being tough and being stupid. Rex knows he’d better control this team (14 penalties vs off the street Bills) or this season will continue to go down the drain fast.

  9. avatar ian says:

Regarding the high number of penalties: Walt Coleman was the head referee of that officiating crew, and he is notorious for calling a lot of penalties.

  10. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Fonzie,
The first Weatherford run fake punt was not a fake punt, he took his sweet ass time, the rush came and he realized he wasnt going to be able to get it off…I watched it twice, watch it again. And the second one was a GREAT CALL, the Jets were in-between makeable field goal and punt distance and only needed a few yards. Learn more about the game before you blame the Head Coach who is not Mangini for everything that goes wrong

  11. avatar um says:

Fonzie, stop speculating on stuff you or anyone else has any clue about. You just like to bad mouth any decisions made by rex.

Please do us all a favor and join this blog http://www.dawgsbynature.com/ so you can pretend to be close to Mangini…

  12. avatar e_man says:

Ihedigbo said Wednesday he didn’t realize he had thrown a punch until he watched it on replay after the game.

Oh come one, are we supposed to believe that!

  13. avatar supercooljetfan says:

they should of been fined more because of it being a tied game and sanchez was playing like poo where every yard is important

  14. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

yeah i dont think either player was such a special teams ace, but i like murrell, he should have been suspended and Ihedigbo cut.

They better be hitting hard in practice and figuring out ways to win. We better win this week.

  15. avatar greg sec 130 says:

fonzie, you think Westhoff called fake punts without Ryan knowing about it? Ryan green-lit them both, and then actually wanted to call another fake and Ryan did not green light that one.

“Believe it or not,” Westhoff said, “there was another one.”

So now spin spin spin it away from your original statements, because Ryan actually did the thing you said he should have done — stopped after the first two worked. You just made Ryan look great.

    Looking forward to the spin.

  16. avatar ramble914 says:

Good for Rex! This will only help the team, there has to be accountability. That was total BS on their part (Murrell & Ihedigbo). The penalties have to stop too.

    fonzie…you’re so predictible.

  17. avatar Brendan says:

    Hah Fonzie,

First punt was a botched attempt and was not called. If you didn’t notice the entire Jets coverage team was taking off downfield anticipating a punt. And how is it causing damage if both this “fake” punt and the called fake punt worked?

  18. avatar supermangg says:

The Ihedigbo “punch” looked more like a push where his hand slid off of the other guys jersey. Haven’t watched it since the game, probably will go do that now, but that was how it looked to me.

  19. avatar DanFerr says:

Does anyone know if Fine was also fined for throwing a punch as well?

  20. avatar Bent says:

    Seems not.

  21. avatar Kyle says:

Rex suspended them, not the NFL. Bills can’t afford to lose 3rd stringers at this point. I doubt Fine will be suspended.

  22. avatar Bent says:

Correct, but the NFL do appear to have fined Digs and Murrell but not Fine.

  23. avatar Cabras says:

    Non story

  24. avatar miketaliaferro says:

I’m still hot that Rex has decided to lump this penalty in with Twitter-gate, making this as harsh a penalty as you get for whining about your playing time on Twitter.

Tough guys, huh? Now, I see that the problem of the Walk not following the Talk is not reserved for the field alone. It also seems to be coming from the coach’s office.

  25. avatar BigKatFan says:

what the h### happened to the whole “swipe at one of ours, a swipe at 2 of yours”? coach Ryan is contradicting himself

  26. avatar Brendan says:

You guys serious? I’m willing to bet anything that when Ryan made his ‘swipe’ comment, he meant it as legal hitting. Hard, legal hitting. No Coach is going to encourage his players to just throw punches.

And how is fighting in a game not just as bad, if not worse, than complaining about playing time? You punch and fight in a game, you should be disciplined. Rex has got to get the discipline back, 14 penalties, almost all mind-numbingly stupid, is unacceptable.

  27. avatar Johnny Hector says:

I believe Rex is searching for ways to get through to different players. Clowney was inactive for the Titan game and Rex said the Clown responded in a good way. Lets hope this works for Murrell and Ihedigbo.

  28. avatar James in TN says:

Schittenheimer should be fined for having Sanchez throw long passes in 25mph winds. Murrell and Idhegibo may have been provoked, no one here knows. It was a bad decision especially with the flag happy refs, but we need to move on. I hope Oakland gets lots of BS penalties this week.
