Cotchery Out for Raiders
While earlier this week Ryan said that Jerricho Cotchery might play, it seems that due to where his progress was by today, it’s better that he stay home for the weekend, while the team travels to Oakland for their matchup against the Raiders.
WR Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) has been ruled out and same thing for WR Brad Smith (quad).
Rex Ryan wants to keep Cotchery at home and have him rehab so he can go next week. DB Lito Sheppard (quad) is also out.
“I was hoping, I know he is getting better and all that,” Ryan said on Cotchery. “At the end we are just like, we definitely don’t want this to happen all the time and each week we are wondering is he going to be up. We don’t want to make it worse. If we get a chance to get him 100 percent or near 100 percent that is probably the best option.”
Mark Sanchez clearly misses Cotchery as a target, as the last two weeks have proven. He’s locked onto Braylon Edwards and forced the ball to Keller. It’s a good thing that the Jets are playing the Raiders, but Cotchery’s absence is dearly missed in this passing game.
The Jets have been lousy with injuries so far this season, and it would seem that the hope is one more week away for Cotchery might instead of making him 70% for this game and 70% for next game, get him closer to 100% for next week’s matchup against the Dolphins on November 1. Although when he’s played he’s been decent, the rash of injuries that Lito has seen isn’t helping his chances much (they weren’t that high anyway) at getting that $10 million bonus this offseason,
Thanks to Brian B. for the heads up.

We were pretty much injury free last year. We are paying for it big time this season.
I dont think the Cotchery injruy affected Sanchez last week. I mean he played well in Miami and Cotch was half speed and caught one ball.
i wont get into last week anymore but I think if we can run the ball decently Sanchez will find guys open out in Oakland. Last time i checked it wont be 45° and 35mph gusts so he should be able to make throws to Edwards, Keller, Clowney and the backs….
Did I mention that I miss B Smith …..which amazes me.
Cotchery doesnt have to be there to catch balls. He has to be there so that we have another legitimate threat out there. Cotchery with 1 healthy leg >>>> Clowney and Wright.
Understood Ronnie…. I am just saying he posed no threat to the Doplhins defense 2 weeks ago and Edwards/Sanchez were beating the coverages.
But Oakland’s cornerback’s are pro bowl caliber compared to the Dolphins. If Asomugha can shut down Edwards, we have no chance this game.
They really need to stop with this week-to-week nonsense, getting our hopes up. It happened with Lito and Strickland. Every week they were ‘questionable’, Lito wasn’t seen for 3 weeks and now he’s out again, and we still haven’t seen Strick. I doubt we see Cotchery until after the bye week, but we’re gonna get this same ‘limited in practice, hopeful to play’ line next week too. Like I said before, either this team has no idea how hurt its guys are or they’re being purposefully deceiving.
maybe this is my inner-mangini, but i dont see the point of telling your opponent, 2 full days before the game, that 3 of your key players are not going to play.
the raiders now have the chance to gameplan around this fact. they can now deovte all efforts to taking away edwards and stopping the run. they dont need to worry about anything else.
on offense, they can tailor a gamplan for their #2 receiver to take advantage of lowery’s weaknesses (although i think that lowery has played better than lito overall).
i am certainly glad the secrecy of the mangini era is over, but it seems to me that in this case, a little withholding info would benefit the team
Doesn’t Phily have to forfit the draft pick we are going to send them next season with Lito not seeing a large % of playing time?
yea, we are only going to give up 1 pick which is the 3rd rounder. This creates a problem because we also gave up a 3rd rounder for Edwards.
Ronnie,
It’s a 5th rounder or 2nd rounder for Lito, there’s no conflict with Braylon’s pick.
We only give up a 5th for Lito
I’m sick of hearing people make excuses for the kid. You can’t blame a bad game on not having a particular receiver, especially when he’s not even your #1 receiver!
Use the receivers you have on the field period.
I like Sanchez I do, but let’s not blame the wind or the injuries. You can blame tunnel vision, you can blame receivers tipping the ball, or you can blame a tight end that didn’t feel like coming to work, but you can’t blame injuries or environment.
YEah the raiders can game plan all they want they still cant stop the run. Let Braylon Edwards draw Asomugha away from the plays, run the ball and occasionally check down to Leon and Keller, we should be coasting. The last thing we want to do is air it out early, maybe late if Sanchez is playing well.
Lafflin,
You can blame injuries and the environment when that injury is to your best receiver (one week of Braylon doesn’t make him our best receiver) and the environment is 40 degrees with 30 mph winds.
Wonderful, we’re seeing this team decompose before our very eyes…
Cotchery needs to sit until hes is 100% healthy in my opinion. For us to risk having him re-injure himself is waste when all we should be focusing on is running the ball and clock possession against Oakland. We will need him healthy down the stretch and to force him into a quick recovery is a big big mistake. Clearly Lito was not ready last week, and now what?
Guys are over reacting with Sanchez. The o-line is playing like crap, we have no receivers for the guy and Schotty is calling the plays factured in with the kid being a rookie. The Saints game is one i thought we most likly would lose. The Miami game the Defense let us down. Sanchez didnt help us win those games but could have. A rookie doesnt have that skill yet. The rook gift rapped the last game but we could have easily been 5-1. let see were he goes from here and if he doesnt bounce back then maybe he needs to be benched a bit.
The way I look at it Sanchez has had his ups and downs even when they were 3-0. What matters right now is which Sanchez shows up this weekend. I’m hoping its the bullet throwing Sanchez so that he’ll get back his swagger when it comes time to play against those damn Fins.
I am beginning to think it is the conditioning that is causing all these injuries (minus jenkins). One thing I did like about Mangini, and there arent many.. are the players were always well conditioned and played penalty free football.
Hopefully they use a lot of screens and run the hell out of the ball on Sunday. With an experienced o-line and at least 2 great half backs, the Jets offense should be able to get the job done without putting pressure on Sanchez to play like a veteran QB. Even if the Jets D plays poorly due to injuries, the Jets should win, as long as they protect the ball.
wtf!!!!no cotchery again i cant believe we are about to lose to the raiders
sec133,the penalties show that the guys have no disipline. I personaly loved Manghini. If he just showed a little more emotion, he would be a great coach. Rex needs to learn about the offense to be a complete coach like Bellachick
Hey guys:
I don’t know what you guys are talking about, but this is terrible news for Franchez AND Keller.
if the raiders stack the box like they are expected to do then we should get them with screens and dump-offs to Leon..there’s no need for Sanchez to bomb it down field, our defense can shut down their offense.
it totally sucks but id rather have him vs miami next week
Smiths quad… Can anyone remember when their was so many quad injuries ? Wonder if this has anything to do with Strength and Conditioning routines for this year.
Guys:
WHAT”S GOING ON HERE?
Am I beginning to see some of you come over to BRIGHT SIDE and actually think that Rex should have borrowed MORE pages out of Manginis coaching manual?
Be careful, you might get yourselves fired, or atleast your homes burnt down…….just kidding.
