I’ve Got a Bad Feely About This…Or Have I?

by Bent on October 24th, 2009 at 2:07 pm

While it would be nice to come away from Oakland with a comfortable win, I think most of us are expecting a tight game this weekend, which makes the role of kicker Jay Feely particularly important.
JF
Feely’s first quarter field goal against the Bills gave him a Jets record 23rd consecutive made field goal attempts, but he would later go on to miss a 44-yarder with his next attempt and was robbed of a chance to win the game in overtime when Steve Weatherford bobbled the snap as the Jets lined up to attempt an improbable 50-yarder into the swirling wind.

Prior to Feely’s hot streak, he was off to a rocky start with the Jets after replacing the injured Mike Nugent in week two. Feely missed four field goals in seven games and had at least another two missed kicks that didn’t count due to penalties. Should we therefore be concerned that now Feely’s streak is at an end, he might return to his unreliable pre-streak form?

Maybe it was my imagination, but it did seem recently like every kick was getting closer and closer to the goalpost until he finally missed one. It can’t have helped that he was jinxed by Hutch’s article last week saying how reliable he is, either. Manish Mehta was also very critical of how he reacted on the blown field goal play. Then there’s the outspoken views he often shares on his twitter account, which were the subject of a NY Times article last week, the result of which was that his twitter account was apparently inundated with messages, most of which seemed to be telling him to shut up and kick the ball. Should we worry that this is a distraction for him?

I think perhaps my pessimistic side perhaps has me worrying about what could go wrong next. On the whole, Feely has been outstanding with the Jets. The kick he missed against the Bills wasn’t the reason they lost, even though it would have helped. He nailed a clutch kick in Oakland last year to send that game to overtime, had the clincher in Buffalo and won the game in overtime in Foxboro, so he has been clutch on the road.

The Raiders are tied with the Ravens for most field goals conceded on the year, so it seems likely Feely will get a few chances to restore my confidence in him this Sunday. Let’s hope he gets a new streak going, although I’d rather see him booting extra points and kicking off to be honest.

How about the rest of you? Are you still confident in Jay Feely, or does he make you nervous?

I’m confident enough in Feely, it’s all the other factors in this game that are troubling to me.

The loss of Jenkins at precisely the time it becomes necessary to limit Sanchez’ throws is a bad confluence of events. I expect Oakland to pound the middle of the Jets D and, if they are successful, Russell has less pressure on him and might make some throws. We all seem to want to pound and ground but that’s what Oakland will expect and defend against. If the O goes a few three and outs and, particularly if the Raiders get a lead, Sanchez will have to throw under less than ideal circumstances, without two familiar receivers.

Of course, if Sanchez shakes off last week’s debacle and plays well – as he did in the first three games – and Rex’s schemes overcome Jenkins’ loss, the Jets could win handily.

Im not sure why this should be considered a close game…

The Raiders are not good…from the top down.

If the Jets want any shot at making the playoffs they must not only beat this team but beat this team convincingly.

In my option we should be 5-1. think about it, which game team actually “beat” the jets?

Did the Saints “beat” them or did we turn the ball over in the worst possible way resulting in 2 scores.

Did the Dolphins “beat” the jets…or did we get burned by the wildcat. Of course the dolphins run they wildcat, thats the only chance they have to score is by running that annoying offense. The Jets offense still played well enough to win, maybe if we called those 2 time outs it would’ve been different.

and of course the Bills game…I dont think that the Bills beat us.

o what I am trying to say is that I expect the Jets to roll over the Raiders…Yes roll.

This is a team that is capable of beating any team in this league…From the Saints to the Raiders. The only team the Jets need to worry about is the Jets. If they dont beat themselves (ie 16 penalties and 6 TO’s last week) then this team can go far and will (hopefully this year).

    35-3…we get on track.

If not then I’m not playing with the Jets on Madden for the rest of the season…thats how I will vent :)

the JETS are an awsome team with spectacular talent. I use to think it was the coaches fault we never reach the big game. Now, after watching a gladiator such as Rex Ryan and the writer around the Jets including with all due respect the author of this article become doubters and begin to accept jets losses. I have to now blame the Jets organization for not having the courage to be winners..Remove the gloves and gags from the coaches and players. Let them have fun at what the do. This is NY CITY THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD. Let the players play smach mouth football at least when they talk trash..they have to live up to it. And there is no greater glory for a gladitor than to talk about it and then do it. Thats why the JETS started 3-0. After sensorship they are 0-3. Im just saying the organization should stop fearing success. Let the players play. im too young to know but it seemed like Bway Joe and the guys talked a lot of trashbut then they had to live up to it. henceforth the big game in 63

Feely’s the least of our problems.

Don’t you guys recognize an attempted reverse-jinx when you see one? ;o)

  6. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Nice, reverse play!

Faked me right outta my jock. Now, let’s hope the Football Gods are buying it!

I tried the same thing throwing an Irish wake for Mr. Met a my local sports pub… just couple weeks after the All Star Break… didn’t work though.

Mother Nature, Father Time and Every Other Nursery Rhyme just kept snapping hamstings and heartstrings.

    Ya Gotta Belive!

  7. avatar greg sec 130 says:

figured it was a double head fake, but no position relies on confidence more than a kicker — so the miss and the muffed snap could play a role if he is asked to kick a long one eary.

  8. avatar nyckage says:

The real problem is our blitzing nature, In our first 2 weeks are blitz looked unbeatable, because their was no film on that kind of D, and the Titans got limited film and used most of it and started using a zone block scheme, but now there is a lot of Jets D film to go around, so Rex has ot go to his old ways in Baltimore and see why people couldn’t interpret the film then and now they can.

  9. avatar Bent says:

Kage – click the link above where it says Manish Mehta was critical of Feely. That article contains two great examples of the Jets varying their blitzes successfully to overcome that issue. Hopefully the Jets defensive playbook is growing too, which will make the blitz harder to stop as the season goes along. Great news if that’s true.

  10. avatar Big Teasy says:

I hope this post is a joke. The man missed one field goal for cryin’ out loud, and now suddenly his twitter account is a distraction, and now suddenly he is evoking memories of when he struggled. C’mon.

  11. avatar supercooljetfan says:

every jet kicker since ive been a fan makes me nervous

  12. avatar ibcode3 says:

I not mistkaken, but haven’t the Raiders owned the Jets for the past decade. You Jets fans are in for a real surprise.

  13. avatar supercooljetfan says:

what surprise that we might actually win this time…thanks for the vote of confidence

  14. avatar Jason says:

Im not in love with Feely, but he has been good for the team ever since that Raiders game. My guess is we will get the streaky guy back now who may miss a kick that costs a game, but other than Vinatieri in his prime I cant think of any automatics in the NFL in recent memory. So I guess he will be good enough.

He did go insane on that field goal play. I think he felt that Weatherford didnt even make an attempt on the snap. I also thought he was mad that the pass did not get thrown to him. I dont think there is much hangover from it. Im more worried about Weatherford. It amazes me that we can not find a competent punter.

  15. avatar Johnny Hector says:

If this game is decided by a Feely field goal then this team is in serious trouble.

  16. avatar Dean Barbella says:

Hmmm… Do ya think Mike Nugent is available?

During Nugent’s four-year career at Ohio State he broke or tied 22 school records, including most points in a career by any player at OSU (356). He was a consensus All-American and he won the Lou Groza Award in 2004, as the nation’s top kicker. He became the first kicker in Buckeye history to earn team Most Valuable Player.

2004 Nugent was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round and played four seasons with the team.

Feb 25, 2009 … Kicker Mike Nugent has declined an offer from the Jets to return and will test the free-agent market.

Mar 4, 2009 … The Buccaneers have signed 27-year old placekicker Mike Nugent to a 1-year deal.

October 5, 2009: Bucs cut kicker Mike Nugent a day after he missed two field goals in a 16-13 loss to the Redskins.

Dude, get yourself a sports psychologist, already?! I miss Boomer singing “Cat Scratch Fever!”

  17. avatar JOEY TRAVOLTA says:

Are you kidding me JAY FEELY is da MAN !!!

  18. avatar supercooljetfan says:

im glad nugent tested the market because he never lived up to him being a 2nd rounder he missed alot of field goals…if obrien dont miss 2 fgs againts the steelers in the playoffs we dont waste our 2nd round pick on a kicker…btw thanks to doug jolley we didnt have a 1st rounder that year either

  19. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I more worried about Weatherford catching the snap than Jay Feely. The guy can get into a funk, but for the most part he makes the kicks he is supposed to make. He is a professional caliber kicker who has made some big kicks in his day, at least he is not a rookie who will be overwhelmed. Like someone else said other than Vinatieri, no one has been automatic in the league for a while.

Feely or no feely, the Jets dont shoot themselves in the foot and run the football with some consistency, they should pull this one out without us really getting crazy nervous

  20. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

The only thing that really worries me is that I dont see guys like Bart Scott said ” taking it upon themselves to get pissed off”.

Guys like Ellis, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Lito Sheppard and Kerry Rhodes to a certain extent arent the Baltimore type guys that actually try to hurt people. Im only basing it on what Ive seen in post game interviews, while talented players, they strike me as soft spoken Southern gentlemen. “Hey we lost, we’ll try and do better next game”. Ellis threw a snowball, that was the extent of his rage.

As crazy as he sounds sometimes, I love Ray Lewis’ passion for the game. When the Ravens lost to Cinncy in the game with all the penalties, it was like he lost a loved one. The dude was so angry and upset, he was crying. Bart Scott has gotta back up all the junk he talked and knock a ball loose, so we can pick it up and run it back. 3 and outs are fine, but we have to start beating people up again and Rex has got to stop telegraphing the overload blitzes.

Id take a one point win if thats what we can get, but Id rather see them just beat the Raiders up like they did Houston. Just hand them their ass on a paper plate, “here ya go”. I know the Raiders get paid too, but the Jets are top to bottom a better football team. All my Giant fan friends and family have really been busting my balls these past two weeks, and I keep telling them that the Jets are a lot better than there record. Im just hoping that the Jets who played Weeks 1-4 (i’ll eat the loss in NewOrleans, they played their guts out, NO just made more plays) is the team that shows up in Oakland and for the rest of the season

Alrite I feel better…felt good to get the out…Squeeze it easy Jet fans

  21. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

deevee, Jets were beaten three times, you are what your record says you are. Why is this considered a close game, well, let me count the ways.

Jets are 3-3, 1-2 on the road, are on a three game losing streak and have a horrible recent record on the West Coast.

Raiders are 2-4, 1-2 at home coming off a win.

Jets are missing their MVP Jenkins and their second and third string CB’s AND WR’s and their RT is limited.

The Raiders best player is possibly the only CB in the game that is better than Revis, and he figures to neutralize Edwards, the Jets biggest weapon right now.

The point spread is bizarre, which in truth is the only thing giving me confidence today.

  22. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Despite all of the above I believe Jets wins a tough close game that will be more exciting than anyone believes.

Ryan will finally put a choke hold on Lil’ Schott and simplify the offense.

Sanchez had a wake up call last week and now realizes he needs to be more game manager than gun slinger. They will get Leon and Wright involved underneath, maybe even Keller will catch a pass or two.

Feely will revert to Ole Reliable (reverse jinx works!) and kick five fg’s and Jets will score one of those defensive TD’s we heard so much about in pre-season bluster. Jets 22 points.

Oak will move the ball on the ground, but will also have to settle for FG’s as the Jets will tighten in the red zone, except for TD from Miller. 19 points.

    Jets 22-19.

Wagers, OAK +6 and the OVER.

  23. avatar Kyle says:

Pouha and Ellis in the middle of the line, Pace and Gholston as our ends.

MILB is David Harris, weakside Scott to cover tight ends, and we alternate Thomas and Westermen on the strong side for the pass rush.

Are you going to tell me this 4-3 defense won’t work?

  24. avatar Bent says:

It’s not a bad line-up and it’s likely we’ll see most of those personnel on the field a lot of the time.

If I were to pick it apart, I’m not sure Bryan Thomas has the agility to play as a 4-3 linebacker and Westerman, while I’m pleased with his progress, is IMO not ready for full time action yet (and neither is Gholston, really). Also, the strongside guy would be the one to cover the tight end, so I would swap them over.

Some version of that is likely to be the sort of thing we see, but I don’t think they’re likely to pick one line-up and stick with it anyway. We’ll see the same scheme adapting for various situations, as we have all season. Not having Jenkins might mean more four man fronts but I’d expect to see an extra DB in the box and Marques Douglas as the other DT before we get a Spags-style 4-3 lineup with 4 DEs on the field at once.

  25. avatar Kyle says:

Douglas in the middle could work as well, maybe alternate Ellis to the end, and keep Pace as a weakside linebacker, alternating with Thomas.

  26. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Ellis was a very good pass rusher as a 4-3 DE, not that I think they are going 4-3 full time as long as Rex is coaching, but if they do expect Ellis to stay outside.

I read that OAK has REALLY struggled, as opposed to just their normal struggling, against 3-4 defenses, so if anything should see 3-4 90% of the time today.

Next week vs. Wildcat you should see plenty of 4 man fronts as well a five and even six on the line at times.

  27. avatar john says:

pace should be moved up to d.e …

  28. avatar oleosmirf says:

what worries me is not the defense its the fact that with Cotchery out and Braylon being shut down we have noone else who can make a play (Clowney can only run a vertical route)

i hope they play Woodhead and see what he can do.

  29. avatar Bent says:

Kyle – Yeah, I like that idea a little better, at least while Gholston and Westerman are still in development. On the whole, we’ll see a variety of personnel, just like we have all season. It’s not like Jenkins was in on every play anyway.

  30. avatar AKA Jack says:

    oleosmirf-

Don’t runs of 64 and 71 yards count as big plays? If we get in the way back machine to the beginning of this season, Ryan said he wanted a smash mouth running game. We have one. We have the number 2 ranked rushing game in the league and it is only now rounding into form.

Keep pounding the ball on the ground. When they stack the line or bring the blitz, screens, dump offs to Leon or draws are the key to this offense controling the ball and wearing down defenses. If we get back to what this team was built to do we will be fine.

  31. avatar Ben Nevis says:

I agree with Johnny Hector: If this game is decided by a Feely field goal then this team is in really serious trouble.

And if we lose today–after the embarrassing loss to the Fins, and the REALLY EMBARRASSING loss to the Bills–well, it means that we suck. Big time.

  32. avatar firstdown77 says:

I have a terrible feeling about feely.

I was seated in between the two goalposts last week (but on the opposite side of the field) and:
His first kick sneaked inside the right post.
His second kick hit the right post and deflected inside for 3 points.
His third kick just barely missed the right post.

What I think Feely has to do:
    Make mid-game adjustments.
    Aim further to the left.
    Correct his mistakes.
    Use his head.

    What I predict from him:
He’ll miss at least two kicks today.

  33. avatar klecko71 says:

just saw the video of what indelibajo and whoever else punching that guy on the bills…

both of those pieces of toliet should have been cut monday morning….

  34. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

There was a fierce wind last week, supposed to be perfect today, not concerned with Feely in the least.

Persusing the stats, the one big advantage the Jets have is the running game, averaging 4.9 ypc vs. 3.3 for the Raiders.

Running defense (both ok, caveat? with Jenkins), passing offense (both suck), and passing defense (both ok, Jets slightly better offset by Raiders superior pass rush) are about equal.

Raider kicking/punter game better, Jets return and coverage teams better, offset.

Jets need to commit to running the damn ball, need to stop the run and not try to do too much in the passing game and they should prevail.

But if the Jenkins loss hurts as much as I suspect this could be a very tough game to win.

  35. avatar john says:

the idea that the jets cant get past the jenkins injury is a joke … the guy is good but out of shape and often hurt .. he shows up half a season ..by the end of november he’s usualy done …and invisable

  36. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

John I agree with every one of your critical points about Jenkins, all of the reasons he was available, but there is no denying he was a force when on the field, often occupying multiple blockers, and will be very difficult to replace.

I hope Pouha has matured and can do the job, but from what I have seen in the past he is not close to Jenkins, and then there is the question of who gets the reps that Pouha used to get?

  37. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

John, I’ve thought the same thing about Jenkins just never could bring myself to say it or type it here.

    McFadden is out for Oak…

    Can we hit JaMarcus Russell

  38. avatar john says:

no doubt..i agree the guys a huge talent … but very hard to rely on or count on late in the season .. his game is big plays …. but he needs a lot of plays off too … he adds nothing to the pass rush .. and we aint great on the run either…. they’re better off not depending on him, having guys have to step up .. the different looks might actauly help the pass rush.

  39. avatar chris philly jets fan says:

people worried about feely are rediculous, the man is an accurate kicker, and hes just a fiery guy who wants to win, what is wrong with emotion? stop worrying, watch the game, the injuries will be tough, have a little confidence though guys, the team can get it done, if you guys wanna really change a culture, change your own culture, stop waiting for the **** to happen, roll with the loss, and come back harder, even as fans it makes a difference, stop expecting the worst, the only thing separating jets fans from fans of other teams about as good as us, is we dont expect wins, and accept losing. living in philly, i know jets fans are just as rowdy and passionate as birds fans, but when the eagles lose, people get pissed yes, but they get back on their horse and come out expecting a win the next sunday, im wearing my green jones jersey and hat to the bar, and then to the flyers game immediately following the jets, i will be dressed as a jet all day because thats my confidence. and it dont matter what people say to me, because i know this team is good

  40. avatar jay says:

hey where is ibcode3 at you were right the jets were in trouble today good call you freak 38-0 now shut up.
