Breaking News: Leon Washington out for the Season

Despite the Jets 38-0 rout of the Oakland Raiders after a three game losing streak it quickly became a bleak day as Leon Washington would go down injured early in the game and now ProFootballTalk is reporting that Leon Washington will join Kris Jenkins on IR with a broken leg.

A league source tells us that Washington suffered a fractured fibula in the first half of the Jets’ Week Seven game against the Raiders.  Washington will have surgery in Oakland because the bone broke through the skin, raising fears of infection.  He’s expected to be back to full strength in 2010, with a projected recovery time of 12 weeks.

This is a major blow to the Jets as they will lose a great special teams man and compliment to Thomas Jones in addition this now poses a huge question mark for his contract status come the end of the year (despite his stubbornness he should get what he deserves personally). The bright spot of this whole ordeal is Shonn Greene whose two-touchdown performance running well over 100 yards could be a sign of what we might expect out of the rookie.

This is going to be another hard loss to swallow but hopefully Leon will be ready to roll in 2010 and the Jets will continue to do their best with what they have.

  1. The way he looked and the way they held the leg together on the cart, it was clear the bone broke through. Too bad. Good luck recovering.

  2. Terrible

  3. Damn….good thing Shonn Greene looked like the real deal today. Good luck to Leon in his recovery process.

  4. Talk about a huge blow to our team. Just when I am starting to cope with life w/o Jenkins. Now we lose another indespensible player is Leon Washington. Damn!!! :(

  5. i can’t believe we lost him for the season. hopefully the FO will still give him the contract he deserves. does anyone know the status of b.scott or ellis either?

this was an awesome win though; we played well on all three levels. albeit, it was against the raiders, but they were coming off of a good win. sanchez still looked a little rattled, but the TD by clowney should give him a much need boost.

glad to see ryan and the players sought callahan out to give him the early shower. the offensive line play was amazing today.

    GO JETS!!!

  6. As great a victory this was……Today is a terrible day for the Jets organization!!! FRIGGIN’ HORRIBLE!!!

  7. Lets Lobby for Leon to get paid!!!! Tanny has got to bring him back

  8. And can Dierdorf PLEASE learn more than the basics before doing a game? He was saying the Raiders should be ashamed that a WR was getting rushing yards late in the game… Woodhead was statistically one of the greatest D2 RBs ever, and only last week became a WR. Dierdorf is a moron.

  9. You can’t blame Dierdorf for making fun of the Raiders. Is not his fault that he makes fun of them for their inability to stop our offensive running machine.

Plus he is old, I am sure he cant be keeping tabs on every single player of every team covers.

  10. I had the same injury. I’m still recovering from it. I had to get a titanium rod put
in my tibia and the fibula broke clean through. My thoughts are with him and
his family. 12 weeks sounds like he only broke the fibula, which is the small
skinny bone in the leg. It is not the weight bearing bone. But it is painful as hell.

  11. Leon should still get his money and the Jets will be okay as long as Joness, Greene and Woodhead remain healthy…SIGN JUSTIN MILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. prayers are with leon…hate to see it happen to anyone but leon especially.

  13. Why is everyone saying his seasons over?
The Jets have just said hes out indefinitely.
Broken fibulas take 6-8 weeks to return.

  14. Adam_Schefter RT @fb_outsiders Leon Washington’s fractured fibula isn’t death knell. Darren Sproles returned from fractured fibula in 2006 and is fine.

  15. mann im devastated leon is my favorite player he’s always come up huge when we needed him. Get well soon leon!!

  16. Jce100022- an alternate view on Leon’s injury:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/10/leon-done-for-year-possibly-ca.html

  17. I feel bad for Leon but we are not done. We still have a potent running game as was demonstrated today and now the Woodhead fans get to see if their guy really has it. He is going to get his shot.

This is a team game and nobody is irreplaceable. Every team has injuries and that’s why we have backups.

On to the Dolphins with a winning record and a chance to go into the bye at 5-3.

  18. Jeeeez ! Bitter sweet victory ! #83 Woodhead now need to step it up !

  19. Cimini just reported that Leon’s career may be in jeopardy…I thought it was just a broken fibula?? I feel really bad for Leon…He seems like a really nice dude..

  20. SIGN JUSTIN MILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Two key players out for the season… and a rookie qb that despite the victory still didn’t look good does not improve this teams hopes of making the playoffs.

  22. Good Luck Leon. And what is Cimini talking about Sproles came back from the same injury and someone here even experienced the same thing and they are fine?

  23. How did Sanchez not look good today?

  24. Hope Leon doesn’t become the cautionary tale for why you *always* take the guaranteed money, as he seems like a good guy.

  25. Scott and Ellis are both fine.

  26. Sanchez’s 114 QB rating would say he had a pretty good game today.

  27. Poor Leon. This will not bode well for his contract negotiations. I hope he stays with the Jets.

  28. I think Justin Miller is available, I think, or maybe we kind just use the guys we have like Danny Woodhead or Lowery and maybe Brad Smith

  29. well after reading that cimini artcle i hope its only speculation that its career ending that would be devasting…especially that leon sat out his jr year at fsu to get a job to help his mom out with money…i guess we will know more tomorrow…the sad thing too is the only reason why his agent is gonna care is because he didnt get his comission on him

  30. As bad as it sucks for Leon….I think the offense will be just fine…Greene looked great!!! I loved his burst..

  31. jeff, it’s Dierdorf’s job to know every player of the teams he covers. What else does he have to do with his life? If he is too old to do his job, he should retire.

  32. Good update on fractured fibulas on Football Outsiders.

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/extra-points/2009/leon-washington-and-fractured-fibulas

“Although Leon Washington will miss the remainder of the season after fracturing his fibula during the Jets’ Sunday afternoon victory over the Raiders, if the injury ends up being strictly a fractured fibula, Washington should be able to continue his career without a dramatic loss of ability.”

and “In our injury database, there’s no halfback that saw his role dramatically decline because of a fibula injury.”

  33. Hate to see leon injured…he is definitely a key component to our offense and I’m sure we will feel his absence sooner or later…I agree on the justin miller signing so he could be back there reutnring kickoffs in leons place…our running game looked good wit jones and greene…on to the phins!!!

My prayers go out to leon! He is 1 of my fav jets! Good luck wiith the recovering process leon!!

  34. Oh and I think Shoone Green is going to be voted Rookie of the week, and could be a nominee for ROY

  35. That’s a bad injury for Washington but hopefully it will heal right and he will be ready to take the first kickoff next year….. We’re all pulling for you Leon.

Great team win over the Raiders…..we have to repeat that performance next week against the Fish.

  36. Jets would be stupid (and unfeeling) to hold this against Leon. If it were to (god forbid) be a career-ender, it would be ammunition for everyone to hold out, and not wait for promises “to be be taken care of” by the team.

  37. What a price to pay for a win! I never imagined in all my life that Leon could ever get hurt. He was always the constant offensive/ST threat since he was drafted. It is difficult to imagine gang green without #29. To make matters worse, the pain from the loss of Kris Jenkins still haunts us. This news just breaks my heart.

  38. There’s a reason Justin Miller is available.

    a) he sucks
    b) the world hates him
    c) he sucks
    d) he didn’t get enough attention as a baby
    e) he sucks
    f) a, c and e

  39. Sanchez was good…At least Schottenheimer learned from last week…Hopefully, Schotty runs the offense like he did today for the rest of the season…Run, Schotty! Run!!!!!!!!

  40. Brendan…. He threw 15 passes two of which should have been picked.. He didn’t look to good today…

  41. AKA Jack, he sucks as a cornerback, but he’s a good kick returner, and I’d prefer him to Lowery.

  42. glocknsoul
i agree with you… but this is a business and unfortunately for leon the front office has the upper hand now…also if leon loses his abilities and is not as good anymore will you be mad at the front office for giving too much money to damaged goods when they could spent that money on a better player??

  43. He threw 15 passes to reduce his role. Since when did it come a QB’s fault be cause he only had 15 designed passing plays and wow 2 were supposed to of been picked it doesn’t matter they weren’t.
You people can be sooo stupid sometimes.

  44. AKA Jack, are you serious?? The Jets need a kick returner and Justin Miller is an awesome one..He is actually a pro bowl kick returner and was only cut from the Raiders because of an injury (turf toe)…He’s at close to 100% percent now so the Jets should sign him ASAP!!!! Don’t forget that even though he has performed poorly as a cornerback, Rex brought him in a few weeks ago for a look….Now that they need a kick returner, the Jets should sign him tomorrow!!!!!!!

  45. This just in…. Cimini is an idiot

  46. Joe B

You think we have room on our roster now for a guy who only returns kick offs and who the rest of the league has passed on after we cut him?

I love Leon (although he should have taken the money) but he did nothing this year on kickoffs and we are doing ok. I’d rather fill the roster spot with another wide body on the D line.

  47. Horrible news.

Try to remember that the Jets put a perfectly reasonable offer on the table and Keels refused to accept the fact that the extension couldn’t kick in until next season. Has the Jets caved, they wouldn’t have had the cap room to make the Braylon trade.

They actually did more than they were required to in an attempt to extend him. Remember they could actually have controlled his rights for a couple more years without extending him.

I don’t think this is likely to be a career threatener, despite what Cimini says, but it will depend how the surgery goes. These things happen from time to time in soccer and CAN end careers, or cause 12-18 months of rehab. Hopefully though, this is a clean break in which case he’ll be fine for next year and if anything, that is easier to get over than serious ankle ligament damage. This is all wild speculation on my part, admittedly.

The fact that this sort of thing can happen underlines why teams are reluctant to extend players early and overpay their core guys. Sure, it may be seen as a lack of loyalty, but the Jets would have a big problem if they gave Leon 12m guaranteed and he never fully recovers. I hope he gets back to full fitness and gets the contract he was after. Every indication is that the Jets were willing to do that, as long as he is healthy and the extension starts in 2010.

    Good luck, Leon!

  48. one game at a time.

  49. AKA Jack -

Plenty of teams have guys on their rosters that only return kicks. Sure, they could probably get by with Lowery but I’d rather have a guy who’s proven at the position.

  50. Franchez did a fine job of doing what he was told to do. If you throw the ball get it to the guys in the same colored uniform that you are wearing. If you can’t do that throw it away. Oh yeah and hand the ball to the running back. He did what rookies are supposed to do.

  51. noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  52. Green lantern… I’m Not an Idiot….I am just not ready to say that Sanchez is the greatest QB in the NFL.. He has 6 TDs and 10 INTs and a handful of fumbles…how is that above average??? How does that make me an Idiot..You must not Watch the games!!!! I would say that makes you the IDIOT!!!!!

  53. Joe B-

Agree to disagree. Next week we have a couple guys returning including Lito and Cotchery. There are only so many roster spots to go around. I don’t see anyone on the current roster I am willing to give up for a very limited, one dimensional player we already gave up on once.

    Bent-

Totally agree. I suffered a dreaded high ankle sprain in college (back in the dark ages when we called it torn ligaments) and it took over a year before I felt right again. Broken bones can be pinned and the healing time can often be much shorter.

And as much as I like Leon, I also agree that he had his chance to take a very fair contract but he decided to hold out for an ultimate contract. It sucks that he got hurt and I wish him a very speedy and full recovery but I am damn glad we didn’t overpay him last spring. We would be killing Tannenbaum right now had he given Leon a guaranteed big dollar contract.

  54. When will players’ union get strong enough to demand the guaranteed contracts that these players deserve? Sure owners will say can’t pay guaranteed money – too many guys get hurt. But…hello? that’s the reason they should get guaranteed contracts. They are modern day warriors, many of whose lives are worsened/shortened due to the stress of playing such a violent game. Meanwhile, the owners get filthy rich. It’s time for guaranteed contracts. Let the owners figure out a way to insure the contracts.

  55. AKA Jack -

You realize that putting Leon on injured reserve frees up a roster spot, right? And that Cotchery and Lito were never off the roster? We wouldn’t have to cut anyone to sign Miller.

  56. I’m with Jack on Justin Miller. He had his chance – let’s give someone else an opportunity to return kicks. We have plenty of guys who can run fast and make people miss in space, let’s give one of them a shot. (Feel free to make suggestions and pick a favorite below). With this many injuries, there’s not much room to add anyone to the active roster because all the healthy bodies have a key role.

Fingers crossed for a straightforward recovery for Leon.

Please no calling each other “stupid” or “idiots”.

With that said, it has been an easy night for me tonight spamwise…on Sundays we usually get a few hundred during the games. Today? 13. I wonder why…

  57. Glocknsoul

Leon was offered a $5 million contract with a $5 million injury protection clause. Both guaranteed. He trurned it down.

10 million guaranteed. Is that not enough? Really?

What kind of jobs do you guys have where the average career is 3.5 years and 10 million guaranteed is not enough cause I need to apply.

    Joe B-

You do realize that there is a difference between being on the roster and being active, right? Next week Cotchery and Lito come back. Who are you going to sit to let Justin Miller, a guy we cut after multiple chances, plays 2 or maybe 3 plays?

Justin Miller is an answer to a question we don’t have.

  58. Glock – I wish they’d put something in place where the player was compensated if they lost their career to injury, but without the team being affected. Whether they could do this through a league wide insurance policy or make the team still pay the money, but give them some kind of cap credit so at least they can replace the guy, I don’t know. I’m sure they’ve approached it from every possible angle.

Of course, in this example, Leon’s agent got greedy and turned down some guaranteed money, so the Jets owe Leon nothing. They always planned to bring him back though, so as long as he makes a full recovery, I don’t see that changing.

  59. Thanks Bent—the civility at this blog is one of the things that makes this place special.

  60. I think Woodhead will be moved back to RB and I have a feeling he would be a good KR

  61. Does anyone know if Woodhead returned kicks in college.

  62. It sucks that Leon got hurt, but a broken fibula is not career ending, Cimini is way off and its pure speculation. And our offense is not done by any stretch of the imagination, Leon is awesome and its a weapon taken away, but we have good players on offense who can make plays and Shonn Greene looked great today and if he can stay healthy, can be a force out of the backfield

  63. Nam – he apparently used to line up as a return man regularly, but nobody dared kick to him!

He ran back a few in preseason and did okay.

Clowney has experience back there and you may remember Lowery had a punt runback last year in preseason.

  64. Who said he was the greatest QB ever? Who even said he was above average? Compared to last week this was a good game for Sanchez, give credit where it is due.
And I think I was being Nice either your an idiot or you aren’t a fan…take your pick.

  65. I say let Danny Woodhead give it a go at kick off returns! Rex would be stupid not to give this guy a try since he is small, fast, elusive, and has great hands.

Screw Miller the guy is a bum!

  66. No Leon’s broke AND injured.

I hope Alvin Keels is out of a job tonight.

  67. another reason why leon was crazy for turning down that contract was the rule change on kickoffs where you can only use 3 man wedges and not 5 anymore making it alot harder to get td’s on kickoff returns…meaning leon’s ko production was gonna go down which i think has since last year meaning another bargaining chip for the front office…so with the new rule and being an undersized rb he should of took what the jets offered

  68. This was the last time you will see Leon in a Jets Uniform.

  69. Especially if Woodhead steps it up, which he is totally capable of doing.

  70. kyle
i hope your right about woodhead… but wrong about leon

  71. Leon man I feel for you and you still deserve to get paid in my eyes. I wish you a speady and full recovery. I hope Alvin Keels can live with the fact that he put a very good person and football player in a bad situation. With that being said shonn Greene looked prettty damn nasty today. If he can keep it up we’ll be alright! I hope the Jets organization does the right thing and still pays Leon and he’s back on the feild for gang green next year!

  72. what makes this worse is you can almost see this comin at the begining of the season…im pretty sure leon could careless if i got hurt on the job but i still feel bad and wished he would of listened to himself and took that contract…hope you had fun at alvins pool party leon cause thas the only good thing that came out of this partnership

  73. Broken Leg or not Let Resign Leon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He’ll be fine by next year lets get this guy locked up

  74. I feel bad for Leon. Its a crushing blow to him, though I don’t think its a big deal for the team. I hope the Jets do give him an offer that matches the 1 year tender they would have given him as a RFA. Let him try to come back and if he cant at least he gets a few million on the way out .

I’d sign Justin Miller tomorrow to return kicks. I think that’s a move they should have made a few weeks ago when it became pretty apparent that Leon was not going to have the same impact in returns due to his increased role in the offense.

  75. Leon hasn’t been all that spectacular so far this year

This was his make or break year, and he broke. He is 28 next season, and damaged goods. The front office owes him nothing. They offered him the contract, and Leon decided to listen to his agent.

Now he is broke in more ways than one, and I don’t see Tannenbaum offering him any kind of big contract next season.

  76. Hey if we aren’t confident in Woodhead, Larry Johnson is getting cut soon. haha

  77. Understand this:

Tanny didn’t give Keels the contract they wanted because of the possibility that Leon would get injured this year.

Not only did Leon have no leverage, but there is always a chance of injury. The fact Tanny offered him 5 million per year is astounding in the first place, considering Keels and Washington had no leverage. And if they had no leverage then, then now all they have are their schlongs in their hands.

  78. Are there any insurance policies for this type of senario ?

  79. Nope.

Leon is screwed. He will most likely get a franchise tag now, and depending on how he performs next season he may or may not get the original contract his idiot agent was asking for.

  80. >>Now he is broke in more ways than one, and I don’t see Tannenbaum offering him any kind of big contract next season.

Broke? Dude, did you make over a million dollars before you hit 30?

Seriously, wtf? Leon was offered a contract this offseason that would have made him $10 million including this injury. He, not his agent, Leon himself, turned it down.

Leon is a great kid and I wish him a speedy recovery but this stuff as if he is some sort of victim of evil agents and more evil owners is crap. Leon rolled the dice against long odds. He lost.

Worst case, he will have to fall back on the college education he got for free and the millions he has already made.

    Just like you.

  81. Alvin Keels ruins guys careers, Leon should fire him tommorow

  82. Leon has people whispering in his ear that he is worth this and that. His head got big, and he did roll the dice, and he did lose, and now he doesn’t get anything but a new agent.

  83. Rich Cimini is a !@%!^ tool dooshbag.

It is a broken leg, a bad broken leg, but just a broken leg, he will be back in time for OTA’s next season.

I hope Cimini gets rectal cancer of the mouth.

  84. Kyle, your hysterical and desperate posts are mostly incorrect.

    1) Keels cannot force Leon to sign or not sign a contract. As an advisor, he can only advise. Leon turned down all that guaranteed money so Leon would be a moron to fire him.

    2) Leon will not likely get a franchise tag. It would be too expensive. Moreover, there is a very strong chance there will be no new CBA by next March so he will only be an RFA. That means the Jets can tender him something like $3 mil and lock him up unless another team gives us a first and third draft pick.

    3) If one is a moron and only judges players based on TDs, then Leon was not having a great year. If one judges a player by how much he contributes, how well he runs with minimal blocking, catching passes, making something of nothing, getting big returns at key times, Leon was having the type of year that would have justified a $5-$6 mil year. He was running much better than TJ.

    4) Because Leon will have little leverage to go elsewhere, assuming he gets healthy, it is most likely that he will play at least one more year in a Jets uniform because the players like and respect him, other teams will be cautious after the injury and will be unlikely to give us a first and third round pick if he is an RFA or the huge contract he wants even if he is a UFA, and we can force him to play here very cheaply relative to what he may be worth.

If you want to worry and be desperate, worry about how we will stop the Fish’ run game given how Fargas and the bald guy were gashing us on running plays. The passing game killed the Raiduhs, not our run D.

    h

  85. >>Leon has people whispering in his ear that he is worth this and that. His head got big, and he did roll the dice, and he did lose, and now he doesn’t get anything but a new agent.

Well yeah, that plus the contract that he and all professional athletes take with Lloyd’s or their equal for millions.

Seriously, Leon is a millionaire. He’s good no matter.

If you want to worry about tragedy, it’s going to cost me a butt load more next year to fill up my boat and I actually work for a living. Pray for me.

  86. Mr. T looks like a genius for holding out…I feel bad for you Leon and I have no doubt you’ll be back, but how do you like your A-hole agent now?

  87. Terrible, terrible news. Lets just hope that Leon makes a full recovery and is able to sign a good contract. It certainly shows you why players hold out. It’s a very tough, risky business. Things like this can (and do) happen at any moment. Good luck, Leon!

  88. As a Met fna, I am not shocked at all. Just another sign the God hates me!!!

  89. I feel terrible for Leon, a great player and seemingly a class act.

That said, those of you saying “pay him anyway” are being foolish. It’s still a business, and the Jets still need to field a team every year. You can’t choose to pay somebody for not contributing.

Leon foolishly turned down a deal ALREADY worth more than his contribution. He took some horrible advice and now he’ll suffer for it.

The Jets can’t choose to reward his stupidity. It would make them dumber than he was.

  90. StvDow – my sentiments exactly

Now lets just enjoy the remaining games and get our untested players some experience. Keep our expectations reasonable. Beating the Raiders is not an impressive feat. We have a lot of work to do with few draft picks. Hopefully Clowney, Woodhead, Lowrey, and the rest of the role players prove to be useful pieces going fwd.

  91. A grievous injury like Leon’s — and be very wary of the optimistic prediction that he’ll be able to play football again in 2010 — only reinforces my belief that football players should get as much money as they’re able to, even breaking dismal rookie contracts, because injury can take you out at any moment.
I feel sorry for Leon because he was not able to get a new contract that would pay him what he’s worth this training season.
All you fans so exercised about players holding out should keep your big mouths shut.

  92. Leon should of held out.

He will be missed, especially in the short passing game. Shonn Greene cannot catch. Jones is not great at catching either.

They will miss his explosiveness too….

Keep Greene in perspective, he was playing the Raiders. He will not get the Raiders every week.

  93. I agree with Harlan that (due to this injury) Leon will have little leverage to go any other place next year, assuming he gets healthy. I still do not believe that he deserved $5-$6 million a year (more like $4.5 million a year which he was foolish to pass up) but I’m sure because of his loyalty and also probably to save face with the fans the Front Office might reciprocate that loyalty and offer Leon a contract somewhere around $3 million.

Now I’ve been thinking about this all night… CBA or not; I’m sure the Jets Front Office is working on a new contract for Thomas Jones going into 2010. With the current money on the back end of TJ’s contract I believe it may be paid to him over the next two years. I’m sorry but with Leon’s injury possibly hampering him next year (by either affecting his explosiveness, his cut ability, or making him favor his leg during games), the Jets would be foolish to let Jones (a team, and offensive leader/playmaker) walk if Leon is unable to play to the degree he was at this season!

  94. With any luck, Leon should make a full recovery and I would expect him to get a deal similar to the one they would have given him anyway. I can’t see him signing a deal for $3m a year unless he is unable to prove his fitness level.

I’m not sure I understand your Jones comment, but if you are suggesting that they bring forward half of next year’s salary to this year, they don’t have the current cap room to do that.

My view on Jones has always been that if next year is an uncapped year, they’ll keep him at that salary and maybe even extend him with a lower salary for the following years and not much extra guaranteed money. If there is a cap next year, they will negotiate with him and bring him back for whatever they can agree on. If he keeps playing like he did the last two weeks, it will be close to that number anyway and maybe they agree an extension as detailed above. If he plays like he did in the first 5 games, they won’t bring him back at that salary and if he refuses to come down to meet their asking price, they will have little choice but to release him or trade him (which won’t get them much in return due to his age).

No team should overpay for a guy when they have other talented players that are cheaper at the same position, especially when up against the cap. If TJ thinks he’s worth more, then he’ll either get that elsewhere or realize he wasn’t as valuable as he thought.

  95. Kewpie to Bent for perfectly summarizing how teams must operate in a capped year.

But, Bent, if the operating CBA next season makes him only an RFA next year, Leon may not have any choice but to accept a $3 mil tender. How many teams will offer him $5 mil or more if doing so forces them to give up a first and third for a former (until proven otherwise) occasional, explosive back.

For all those criticizing MT, he has proven what he does best. He has given us leverage on both of our vet backs where we may get them cheap, with no long term commitment, but with all the aces on our side of the table. TJ would appear to be expensive next year but if Leon does come back, Shonn learns to pass block and continues to develop, given TJ’s age, Tanny may be able to force a less costly deal on him too because how many teams will overpay for a 32 year old RB (hint: ask Shawn Alexander).

    Harlan

  96. where are all the people clammoring for TJ to be traded now?

fact is, the guy is having a good year. 4.9 YPC is probably inflated because of the last couple of games, but you still have to give credit to where credit is due. he is durable, doesnt fumble, and is a true pro. listen to his post game presser – just an amazing show up support for LW and it is clear this guy is one of our leaders

i am still very hopeful for a full recovery for LW. broken fibulas are not career threatening. in fact, you see many players come back in the same season. i just hope there is no infection or other consequences from the bone through the skin. that being said, TJ is clearing out playing his contract this year – if 2010 ends up uncapped, it would be great to see the FO guarantee TJ for 2010. he would get another payday and be insurance for LW

  97. Harlan – I am assuming that Leon will recover fully, in which case, if the Jets didn’t extend him I think Leon would be very disgruntled.

If his recovery is less certain then a low tender is one scenario where they could retain his rights but that would still only be for a year and then, once he proves he’s recovered, he’ll still end up getting the $5m or whatever.

  98. can u guys please stop with this woodhead guy..hes a practice squad d2 player…he will never return kicks for the jets and u will not seem him on the sideline, never mind the field when cotchery and sheppard are active

  99. Um….Frank? He’s already on the team, plays on special teams and had a few carries to run out the clock yesterday. He’s going to be on the team as the 3rd RB until/if Leon gets back.
