Game Recap: Same Old Jets? Umm-no!
All week long the question of whether or not fans have been witnessing the ‘same old Jets’ play down to expectations was debated. Argument was fiery, strident and sometimes un-neighborly, and it shot back and forth across cyberspace, including on these pages. While each litigant staked out his territory, both sides agreed that this upcoming game against Oakland, on the Left Coast, would be the litmus test. The Pessimists, led by Rich Cimini, were expecting a grim, unpleasant loss. On their side was a hole in the defense without All-Pro DT Kris Jenkins, other important injuries (Cotchery, Sheppard, Smith), a rattled quarterback, poor performances in three straight weeks, and, presumably, history. For the optimists, standing abreast of Dan Leberfeld and his thirteen readers, there was the memory of the first three weeks, and not much else. Who was right? That’s why they play the games. If you stood with Cimini, you lose.
The New York Jets dismantled the Oakland Raiders 38-0 this afternoon and, in Antonio Pierce’s terms, it was little more than a scrimmage. But, the game would prove costly as Leon Washington was carted off the field in the first quarter while Shaun Ellis made it to the sidelines on his own, but did not play after his exit in the second session. It was later reported that Leon’s season is over. A devastating blow for Gang Green, if it turns out to be true.
The game began auspiciously for the Jets. On Oakland’s first play from scrimmage, Calvin Pace, who had a monster game, tapped the ball out of JaMarcus Russell’s grasp and the recovery left the Jets on the Oakland six yard line. After three straight runs into the teeth of the Raiders’ defense, the Jets stood at fourth and goal from the one foot mark. Without blinking an eye, Rex Reed signaled for the fourth down try, another run, and this time Thomas Jones punched it in over Alan Faneca. For the Raiders, it was all downhill after that. The Jets scored, and then scored again a few minutes later when Mark Sanchez called his own number running a quarterback sneak to make it 14-0. By half time, it was 24-0 and the pirate makeup was getting heavy on the faces of Raider nation. Oakland, it turned out, never scored only coming as close as the two yard line, and only in the fourth quarter with barely three minutes to go. When Gradkowski’s fourth down desperation pass to the back of the end zone went high, the shutout was assured.
For those critics who had hammered Jets’ Offensive Coordinator, Brian Scottenheimer, for not running, and hammered coach Rex Reed for not hammering Brian Schottenheimer for not running more, this was your game. The Jets ran an astounding 49 times from scrimmage, not counting the Sanchez quarterback sneak, the Clowney end around and another Steve Weatherford risky but successful fake punt, the third in three games. This one fooled the Oakland special teams so completely, it could have gone for a touchdown if an Oakland player hadn’t turned around to see that the ball hadn’t been kicked after all. As it was it gained 26 yards. Even without Washington, the Jets collected 300 yards on orthodox runs. That’s the second straight week they have run for three hundred—and this week, they won. Every time you looked up someone was hitting the line and for the second week, Thomas Jones looked like he was getting paid to do it, following up on last week’s impressive 214 with a not bad 121. Rookie Shonn Green also finally got it in gear colleting 146 yards on only 19 carries. Even Danny Woodhead picked up some NFL yards in garbage time. The sound of pads slamming into pads was mighty sweet. Smash-mouth, finally, smash-mouth.
Mark Sanchez played well enough not to lose. Something his fans were happy to see after two bad performances in the past three weeks. He missed a few open receivers and seemed a bit rattled when the blitz reached him but, on the whole, it was a promising return to form. Braylon Edwards, doubled most of the game and covered by Asomugha often, still drew off the defense which left David Clowney open for a good game including his first touch of the season, a ball he made a nice adjustment on despite being double covered. There was also a Wallace Wright sighting (two catches for 21 yards). Dustin Keller only had one catch, but he made a nice move and broke it for 26. He still has to be more productive.
As for the defense, they pitched a shutout. Enough said. Revis was splendid in coverage again collecting a sweet pick and at least three pds. The secondary got a big boost from Donald Strickland, who brought some nasty hits to a unit that had been hard pressed for nasty, recently. The blitz got some nice pressure accounting for three sacks, all by Calvin Pace. Two sacks forced the ball out and were recovered by the Jets. Pace also blocked a pass and had six tackles, a really nice day. They did give up 94 yards on the ground, not counting Gradkowski’s yardage running away from pressure, which he did a lot more effectively than JaMarcus Russell, whose career would seem to be in serious jeopardy. The absence of Jenks, against a better running team than the Raiders, will probably hurt.
But, it’s not a day for caveats. This was a pretty overwhelming win in a game that the ‘Same Old Jets’ would have lost. What we have to do is sit back and enjoy this for a day or two. Then we can start gloomily anticipating the Dolphins rematch. We’re experts at that. Let’s just wait till Wednesday.

Andrew, to be fair Cimini predicted an ugly Jets victory. Also, if ever someone in the “media” owed Thomas Jones an apology the time would be now and the party would be you for last week’s unfair criticism.
uuuhhhhhh its the raiders im not too excited…….
So who’s going to get injured next week… Leon’s injury looked disgusting and if we dont sign him to a new contract, that could be the last we ever see of him, however unlikley that is.
Not to bad of a game report Andrew
I’m not opining one way or the other, but the logic is they’re not the same old Jets because they beat up the lousy Raiders? It was a nice win, but let’s see them at least get payback on the Dolphins before we start re-crowning them.
Also, Ellis did return according to Rex.
jeez jets fans lets enjoy this win just a little bit! fact of the matter is, the raiders still suck but can be dangerous after beating philly.
make sure you bring the noise next week vs MIAMI!!!!!!!!!
SQUISH THE FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally both sides of the ball played well. sanchez still looks shaky thoughand i’m starting to have some doubts about him. I was happy the jets selected him and I like the way he has bounced back twice but some of his throws today were horrible. I just wonder what if, if our running game wasn’t so good. Hopefully he’ll have another good game against Miami next week.
i know it was only the raiders but give them credit it was on the west coast the same ol jets would of lost on the west coast
Who’s Rex Reed? :o)
Nice report, Andrew, but I think you could have come up with a better headline:
1. The Poise Are Back in Town
2. Calvin Pace Returns from Six Game Suspension
3. Boom Boom Ow!
4. The Henne-moon is Over.
5. Danny Woodhead Carries Jets to Big Win
6. Raiders Inadequacies Mask Spotty Jets Performance
7. Schottenheimer Admits “I Got Gameplan from TJB Comments Section”
8. Thomas Jones Held to Disappointing 121 Yards
9. Clowney Fails Again as a Number Two WR; Plays Like a Number One Instead
10. Open Tryouts to be Held for Jets Roster Spots This Weekend After Multiple Injuries in Oakland.
bent
im gonna go with headline #2 he played awesome today
Bent- My faves are numbers 2, 7,8, and 9.
bent, i wouldnt be surprised if schotty was humbled enough by our outstanding run offense today that he would admit to #7.
haha number 2, awesome!
They did what they were supposed to do today…
It’s a step forward..
Hopefully the injuries aren’t too bad this week, aside from Leon (that sucks..)
Let’s hope they can have another great game against the tuna-nets, but be on the winning side this time..
I’m not impressed.
It’s the Raiders. You’re supposed to destroy teams like them. Plus we lost LW, possibly Sean Ellis as well. We don’t even know if Cotchery is back next week. I’ll only be happy if we win next week. I want my revenge.
Eastside
Having earlier this week offered my mea culpa on TJ, I can now report that he has credited me with his improvement saying he was stung by my criticism but went on to say “that sumuvabitch was right.” He sent me a game ball last week, whih I cherish.
Bent
I’m leaving “Rex Reed” in the Recap to make your post funnier, which I regret does not otherwise seem possible.
bent
I know enough not to try and top that.
rollercoaster
You don’t have to gush. You wild eyed optimists have got to take it down a notch.
Viva The Hot Dog!!!!!!
Andrew the only thing I disagree with is that the Raiders arent a good running team. That is the only thing that they can do on offense. Though its not consistent all the time, it was good enough to beat the Eagles…The reason that they are so bad is the horrible QB play they get loads up the box and puts the defense in terrible situations, their defense would be ranked higher if they werent always put in bad spots
Personally, I don’t know how I’ll get over the loss of LW. My favorite player. I’m crushed.
As is said before the game—this was the most critical game of the season so far. I like the fact that we won a game that we were supposed to win and that it came off a miserable performance last week. It was also a very complete game—-a solid team effort. As far as who you beat—-when you beat any team in the NFL 38-0 you have played well. Oh by the way—next week is the most critical game of the season so far.
Cotchery is coming back next week. The whole point in us keeping him out this week was so he would be 100% for the Dolphins.
RIP Leon
Looking forward to next week’s matchup, it would be nice if we can use Miami’s own game plan against them. Much like we did this week, it will be essential to dominate possession time. The more we run, the less we depend on Sanchez, the less our defense gets winded, the more opportunities we have to win the game. I think this week flat out smacked the formula all over Schotty’s face. Looks like the o line is starting to click too…
Leon’s loss is a heavy one, but lets not overlook the fact that Shonn Greene looked like our best runner in a while today. Its not a fluke… he did the same things in college.
it sux that we had to lose Jenkins to play some real football. the defense played great and dare i say that the offense looked good today. i usually cry even after a win about how bad things were.
The o-line is doing a great job in the run department but why cant they give sanchez some protection. Im glade Leon was not in the game(not to get hurt) those designed dump offs to the guy was killing this team.
Of all teams i hate losing to the Phins. we have to beat them this weekend.
Ellis came back into the game, so his injury couldn’t be that bad. I was alarmed when I saw him leaving the field towards the locker room with about 5 minutes left in the half. I didn”t see him come out with the team when the second half started and I was concerned, but I saw him playing in the fourth quarter.
It sure was a fun game to attend. My usually obnoxious Raider Fan Friends were real depressed. They booed Russell very loudly and cheered for Godkowski when he came in like you would expect Hank would cheer for Pennington. Jamarcus has NOTHING on Sanchez.
Bent, was that you at the New England game today in your Jets jersey?
WW85,
you should join the leon washington fan club on facebook. loll im the president of it
No way! You won’t catch me at a London game unless it’s the Jets.
I will be attending the Jets game on Sunday though!
whoever is saying this win is no big deal cause it was against the sucky raiders i think is wrong… we beat them on the west coast !!! in which last year we went 0-4 3 of those teams were sub .500…so actually today was a good win because not also we won but we annihilated them and calvin pace is back in game mode just in time for the fins
London the Ultimate Road Trip. Gotta fly into Amsterdam, spend a few days and then take the train accross the channel. Hope the Jets go soon.
Gotta run the 5-2 defense this week against Miami!!!
Is it crazy to suggest that Jenkins may have been a liability in some ways? He always seems winded, breaks down as the season winds down, gets caught in the game in ni-huddles and hurry-ups but gets tons of reps because of his ability so they never take him out. Defense seemed more numble today, but mebb cuz the team they played was just awful…
sorry “nimble”…
Rusty – Yeah…and it wasn’t at 1pm either!
Nam – I actually would hate it to happen. Would much rather travel over to watch the Jets in America than sit with a bunch of fans who are there for the novelty factor and get so bored that they spend the last three quarters doing the wave.
If they do a game in Mexico then the Jets are a no-brainer for that, but if they do ever come over here I’ll do what I can to accommodate any TJB readers that make the trip.
Today’s game was an absolute JOKE. That’s supposed to be a home game for the Bucs, but there were more Pats “fans” and the media coverage and build up was all about New England.
STW – Maybe, but I noticed that the Jets gave up one of the biggest runs of the day on a play in which they had 3 DTs on the field. As the Raiders showed with their defense, stacking the box can lead to big plays too, because you’re only one big block or missed tackle away from the second level.
Happy about the win. Take care of mush face Henne next week and I will sleep well for two weeks
i think its the fans job this sunday to stop the wildcat…i think if we get loud it will def mess with brown and williams since they are not qbs…maybe if we get loud enough we can force some false starts and delay of games in which in return we can get another game ball
bent
only if we stayed on the eastcoast played only 1 oclock games and wore those titan jerseys everygame we would have a chance to go undefeated
a better headline would be some kind of play on sanchez eating that hotdog…something like “jets hot dogging it in victory” haha
bring on flipper!
Five things:
1) If Leon is really that hurt, which given how great he has looked would be sad and harmful to the team, I hope he is still happy with the gamble Keels advised him to take and which he took. He could have had a contract, albeit payable next year, with guaranteed millions. If he is really hurt….
2) More than most of you younguns who have no idea who Ike Lassiter or Warren Wells were, I loved this victory. But, the Raiders got in trouble by not running the same game plan Shott did (pun intended). They were running through us like sh-t through a loose goose. They lost this game with two interceptions, one for a TD, a lost fumble inside their own 10, on a passing play and another lost fumble on a passing play. Miami will emphasize its running game against us and what looked great in Oakland may well look suspect in the Meadowlands. We did miss Jenkins and Ellis.
3) Sanchez won a caretaker game at QB. He missed passes to open WR and did not look too confident. No fumbles, a running TD, no picks, and a TD pass so he did not lose us a game. However, I hope he learns how to throw in the cold soon.
4) Clowney did well against blitzes, but did anyone besides me note how hard it was for gang green (oh, the wrong colors) WR to get separation. Even the TD was a come backer.
5) Shonn Greene is going to make TJ look good. If he can ever learn to pass block…
harlan
SIGN JUSTIN MILLER!!!! He’s a big-time KR and maybe Rex can get him to finally live up to his potential at cornerback…
This has to be the most bitter sweet win of the season..Losing the key player to our defense last weekend(JENKINS) and now the loss of Washington…Shonn Greene looks like he’s ready to be the number 2 behind T.Jones so that is a plus…Sanchez is acting so immature on the sidelines and in-game he really needs to get a grip on what it takes to be in the NFL…Hotdogs, interceptions, and hanging the ball out like its a Easter Basket sounds like a winning combination to me…Lucky our offensive and defensive line play well cause as the pun goes,”i wouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket expecting Sanchez to win us a game.”Grow up kid your not at USC anymore…..
It’s terrible to lose Leon, but Shonn Green finally got his shot and made the most it. I think Danny Woodhead will also surprise us all and the combo will cover nicely.
As for today’s win: while elated, the pessimist in me says it was those gag enducing throw back uniforms. They never seem to lose when they wear them.
if we keep running like that, sanchez can hide all he needs to. Schotty!!!! KEEP RUNNING!!!
Poor Leon. So sad for him. My fault for buying his jersey this year. I apologize.
trujetfan
thas why i havent bought a jersey in like 3 years bought a keyshawn traded him then coles lost him to free agency pennington injury then vilma injury and trade
giants losing by 7 i must say i think we got the louder crowd
Andrew-
Nice analysis. Accept for the part where you admit you were flat wrong about Thomas Jones.
Exactly how many times does he have to do this before you cry uncle?
Good game. I have two thoughts that I’d like to vocalize:
1) The Jets still need more sacks, and they need them from a larger variety of places. I’m very happy with Pace’s game, but they still have a long way to go in this department.
2) I believe Bart Scott had 3 tackles, and he did miss a tackle or two. Anybody else ready to call this guy overrated?
It was the raiders……..
Very sad about Leon. I actually didnt even watch the game. First time in a long time. Birthday. Had a party here. The game was on, didnt watch. WTF.
Good win. But it was the Raiders.
Oh yeah, and whoever said the thing about signing Miller, I agree with you. Does anybody know if he’s still available? I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for him to develop into a legitimate cornerback, but he does have return skills.
So Bart Scott had a game of three tackles, now he is overrated. Rex Ryan likes the guy thats testament enough to his talent, Id listen to a defensive genius before some disgruntle fan.
Bart’s primary responsibilities as the TED linebacker:
1. Cover the TE
2. Take on blockers so Harris can play in space.
Since Zack Miller, oakland’s leading receiver did nothing and Harris was his usual self, I’d say mission accomplished on both fronts.
JETS..JETS..JETS!!!! SANCHEZ…I LOVE YOU!!! See you next week…HENNE better recognize!!!
I gotta say this is karma for all those Dolphins fans coming over and rubbing our noses in it last week. Jets win 38-0 and the Flippers choke away a 21-point lead. See those chumps next week.
Cut out the it was just the raiders [stuff], just like it was just the raiders seahawks and 49ers last year. An NFL win is an NFL win, and one that puts us at 4-3. enjoy it, the leon injury is horrible, good news is greene looked excellent, it will leave a void though. D looked excellent, Sanchez looked like a different man out there, this is a great way to go into the fins game. Let’s get to the bye at 5-3 and put the dolphis away. Jets will be alright, even with all the injuries.
One of my favorite aspects of this victory is the Revis interception. Any of you guys see that NFL network commercial they’ve been running with Nnamdi Asomugha intercepting a pass intended for Cotchery? Well, Revis was the one who had the amazing interception. After seeing that commercial a million times, it was oh so sweet to watch that fantastic interception by Revis.
i don’t get the big deal about sanchez having a hot dog at the end of the game. .. the media try to make a story of nothing..
Brandon from Illinois -
I’m with you, I hate that commercial. And I think Revis went a long way in the ‘best corner in the NFL’ discussion today. Asomugha whiffed on Clowney in the first quarter, while Revis made every tackle he was near along with the pick.
This game just reminds me of the terrible games we played in weeks before, im still baffeled as to how we lost that buffalo game. But the running game is looking amazing, i wasnt to worried about leon he’s great but i loved shonn greene in iowa and i believe he our future and will be an pro-bowl back in this league. Hopefully we can just substain some consistency going forward and continue to run and play solid d, Lets go JETS!!!
Is there any place where I can watch a replay of the game in full?
I was nto able to watch the game today and I don’t have the luxury of DVR or Tivo :(
Revis interception.
Just gorgeous

you can always download the torrent of the game. I live in kentucky now so I had to watch the game on http://www.atdhe.net and that footage was without the commentators…….. Felt pretty weird watching the game without volume. But all is well, the jets looked a bit shaky in the pass game but that will improve with time I hope. But I see that our run game is finally clicking on all cylinders
but make sure you download a torrent engine (utorrent or VUZE) Google it
then go to this site
http://leech.tenyardtorrents.com/
and sign up then after that the just browse the site looking for any football game you like
If the jets game isn’t there, which it isnt as of 2:48am EST on Monday Oct. 26, 2009 then just wait a couple of hours. but I will guarantee you that it should be there by about Noon EST
BTW, BEAT THE FLIPPERS
Yeah in my Dreams tonight..LOL…
Check NFL.com I think they might have a service like MLB.tv does
Great win, and I loved how Sanchez was eating and Rex helped dump water on Callahan. Rex has changed the complexion of this team. Football is now fun not drudgery, just ask Cleveland fans how they like the Mangina.
I hated losing Leon, but it opened a door for Shonn, dang he looked good running up the middle and on the edges. Clowney got a chance to shine. Lastly, I love the fact Schotty called the game to our strenghths. If he keeps this game plan up I will retract my calls to fire him at the end of the season.
The defense played great, and yes Bart has struggled. That being said he is a catalyst that we need and he doesn’t always have to make the big play. Our team gelled today , and it was a great win because Oakland has our number.
Every year they schedule us in Oakland, I think it is retribution for the Heidi game.
Also, Kudos to Westhoff for putting Clemens in as the holder. He should have been doing it from the start of the season.
Also, I loved watching the dolphins having such a large lead then blowing it. Henne is in for a rude awakening this week.
Let’s get one thing straight: Sanchez is an absolute idiot for eating a hotdog on the sideline.
He should have gone with the boneless chicken wings. The hotdogs in that stadium are gross. I’m not even joking. The chicken wings? Scrumptious.
Speaking of hotdogs, his dunk was better than Drew Brees’ dunk too. Left handed and off two feet? Definitely more “flava”.
out of the 2 stories about the jets 1 of them that darn hotdog is in the headline and the other being about leons injury the writer still throws a hotdog line in it…what a bunch of weiners
sorry the 2 stories comin from the daily news
not only did i just buy a leon jersey, but i bought the white titans one he wore yesterday. it’s at the cleaners getting hemmed.
f…
btw, who are frontrunners to be new returner? woodhead, leonhard?
Could not agree more Bent….
The two foot dunk was ala…The human highlight man himself D. Wilkins… left handed no less.
Maybe it was a turkey dog…alot less fat but still rich in protein.
Bent…
What the status on my favorite horrible waste of talent Justin Miller? Is he still on the street looking for work?
As some know I hate this guy with a passion but he can retrun some kicks and make things happen.
Um….anybody want to rethink the trade T Jones nonsense?
I know its probably been talked about all night and day but maybe Andy Reid and B-Schott should talk about running the ball gameplans…. how did the Eagles lose to this team?
This game was the boring enjoyable mess that i thought the Bills game would be.
I think D Deirdof has a love crush on D Revis. Not that i dont but…..come on bud….we know he great…. and Danny Woodhead is a running back not a WR get the facts straight
Just a side note…anyone else remember when Mr t brought M Austin in for a look and every Jet fan blew a gasket saying he wasnt worth a 2nd round pick?? Just saying
were is “phinsfan” today?
oops, i mean where is “phinsfan” today?
Drew,
Miller is still a free agent. There’s gotta be another fast little guy that can return kicks out there (dare I even say it….Woodhead?). I’m with you and think Miller is awful.
And I couldn’t care less if Sanchez wheeled a food cart out there and had a Thanksgiving feast on the sideline. He did his job for the day so who cares.
I am sure there are plenty of guys that are fast but only a few can take it to the house….as much as I hate J Miller he can score points for us on specials….
if the guy is still out there something is wrong. Maybe he is out of shape. I would think someone could use him in the return game.
AKA…Drew, the NFl is proving itself to be schizo once again. The Eagles could win their division and lost at home to the lowly Raiders. The Jets could win their division and lost at home to the Bills. Even the Giants went 5-0! Just kidding, But it’s just one of those things. 16 games is a decent judge for what teams deserve the playoff berth, one week is not. I hate the term any given sunday, but if you are the Eagles and Jets, you forget last week.
And I posted above about Dierdorf and someone defended him that he doesn’t need to know every player on the team. He is pathetic (Dierdorf that is).
I knew it!!!! I knew it!!! Jenkins is already out and now Ellis on the defensive line. We won’t be able to stand defensively without a stout defensive line.
Also, Miller would be only returning kicks — no one wants to see him in coverage. If Lito and co. get injured again, I’d rather bring in Corey Ivy than have Miller play D. And with the new return rules (no wedge), I’m not sure Miller’s abilities will translate well into a new system. It might, but I would prefer a possession guy (remember Miller’s rookie year he fumbled so much they had to put Leon back to PR in his place (thus the birth of Leon the returner)) who has some ability. Maybe Brad Smith? He can break tackles and is shifty and has good hands.
Oh, and Ellis did return to the game I think… on that fumble recovery where the ball was ripped from DeVito’s hands on Pace’s FF in the 3rd Q, and the ball trickled out of bounds — I could have sworn I saw #92.
I just watched the replay of Pace’s 3rd sack and the DeVito FR — not only was Ellis was back in the game, he is the doofus that grabbed the ball out of DeVito’s hands and ran with it (then fumbled out of bounds).
This was in the 3rd Q, after his injury. Obviously he will play next week, though he may be limited in practice.
Jets have their own Wildcat on specail teams….Weatherford is a better runner than a punter
Ellis returned…so I am not sure why the fonzie rant is taking place.
Miller’s problems were on punt return not KO returns. Leonhard handles the PR anyway.
Again I hate Miller and would never want him near the fiels unless its a KO…….but his talent is that he is fast and breaks open field tackles. he is a great KO guy.
Just wondering myself why it always go west to play the Raiders so much. Well it is true somehow that the schedule makers have had us since 99′ play 7 times out west the Raiders East 2 times and 04′ and 07 no games between the 2 teams.. How does that happen?
Won a battle but losing the war?
I loved the game as much as anyone for all the reasons commented above but;
Feeling really bad for Leon, he should have taken the very fair deal offered by the Jets. Wonder if Keels is twittering about the contract negotiation moving sideways this morning? Think they may have taken a small step back, eh, hope you lose all your clients over this Alvin.
IF Bart Scott injury is serious how foolish will Rex looks for leaving the starters in trying to protect the shut out?
Wtf was Sanchez and Jones and the other starters doing in the game up 31-0?
I have to find something to complain about, between those things and the stupid hot dog eating contest on the sidelines (what is he looking for an Nathans commercial?) the whole end game stunk for lack of class.
As for number 7 above, thank you thank you thank you, finally they ran the ball and ran it again, finally playing to their strengths, what an exporting concept.
Please, lets not somehow credit Schott now for coming up with this terrific gameplan, this is what they should have been doing since the first game of 2009, he was the last one to the party.
Good win, MIA looked very good at times yesterday, should be a fun battle this weekend.
Fonzie is just looking for something to harp on. Ellis was fine, came back, and will be ready to take someone’s head off on Sunday.
Correction, should read first game of 2008!
I have been fueding all week with those of you who have been asking to trade Thomas Jones, After back to back 300 yard performances, I think its clear that Jones is an asset to our team and by no means should be traded.
Maybe Leon going down was a blessing in disguise, maybe the Jets just got a chance to unleash the next big thing in NFL running backs. Remember when LT went down and people got a good look at Michael Turner? I’m just trying to put a positive spin on the Leon injury, but man did Shonne Greene look good.
I cannot say it enough, how good is Darrelle Revis?
Where’s Hank and Fonzie to sing the praises of Mangini’s masterful performance yesterday? Aaron Rogers is sacked a league record 25 times in 5 games and the Browns get zero sacks. THE TACTICIAN AT WORK!
There is no way the Leon injury was a blessing in disguise, man how could you Jesus?
Didnt need an injury to one of the classiest and best players on the roster to get Greene reps, they were coming sooner or later.
As for the trade talk, one of the main reasons that I wanted to trade TJ was to begin the transition to Greene, he was drafted specifically to replace TJ.
The way to attack the TJ trade argument is using the Leon injury leaving them short of backs. Obviously, a Leon injury, no way predictable, would have made the trade look horrible if it had happened, but Greene’s performance would have made it look good too.
I never said TJ stunk, just that he was the lone tradeable vet that could bring back a pick. He is still gone next year with nothing in return but obviously he will now be more important going forward this year.
Disgruntled fan? I’m not really disgruntled, I’m just voicing an observation. I’ve seen Scott miss more tackles than he’s made this year.
How about that?
It’s amazing to me how I stay even keel from week to week, and most everyone else either jumps really high or wants to get high, yet I get labeled the disgruntled fan. I was one of the few people not ready to cook the Jets last week.
Yeah, mission accomplished. Against the Raiders, who would be lucky to go .500 in the UFL.
Bart Scott and Kerry Rhodes need to start making plays, period.
Wise: Yeah, I don’t think “blessing in disguise” is exactly how I’d describe it, but JR is correct that at least this cloud might have a silver lining.
J=M: I’d like to see Scott miss fewer tackles too, but overall he’s doing a great job in those areas that don’t necessarily get noticed or show up in the stat sheet. (Although in advanced stats such as QB hits, pressures and stops he is grading out really well, so far).
Wise Old Jet fan,
No, the argument against you claiming the Jets should tarde TJones is the fact that he is a very good runningback. You, and anyone else who made the suggestion is nuts
The Leon comment was a joke, just trying to get the spirits up.
Looking ahead in the schedule, boy do the Jets get a big break playing the Bills in the comfy indoors of Toronto. Not having to expose Sanchez to the fickle Lake Effect Winds of Buffalo in the late part of the season can only be a positive.
Very true kd bart
Now I’ve been thinking about this all night… CBA or not; I’m sure the Jets Front Office is working on a new contract for Thomas Jones going into 2010. With the current money on the back end of TJ’s contract I believe it may be paid to him over the next two years. I’m sorry but with Leon’s injury possibly hampering him next year (by either affecting his explosiveness, his cut ability, or making him favor his leg during games), the Jets would be foolish to let Jones (a team, and offensive leader/playmaker) walk if Leon is unable to play to the degree he was at this season!
Jones, Greene, and Woodhead will be interesting to watch for the remainder of the season. I bet Danny (now the #3 RB) will be inserted into some of Leon’s plays because of this speed, elusiveness and great hands. We might even see him in kick returns next week against the fish.
By the way…. I have no issue with Sanchez eating that hotdog yesterday, when your hungry you got to eat!
JR, I agree that while no one wants Leon hurt, I feel there will be a positive impact from it. I do not think Leon was being used correctly this year. Where are the screens? the passes to the flat? He was basically being used as an every down back. Shonn Green is much better suited to that roll.
Also should be noted that Pace had both forced fumbles working out of a 3 point stance in 4 down linemen sets. I know some people on here worried that he’d be less effective coming from a traditional 4-3 DE position, but seemed alright yesterday.
I, too, believe there is a silver-lining with Greene now taking more carries. I love Leon’s game, but as I’ve said since his contract negotiations heated up, he’s not an every down back and if he carries too much between the tackles, he’d get injured. Greene is great between the tackles and, unlike TJ, he has a low center of gravity and powerful legs. So, when the defense is a little tired, Greene comes in and he’s just a load to get down. He ran through arm tackles like Riggins. IMO, Greene improves the basic between the tackles running game.
Leon should’ve only been a third-down and passing situation RB. I never though he could take the pounding inside. Leon is a great kick returner, change-of-pace back and pass-catcher. His overall excellent play will be missed. But, the basic Jets running game is better with Greene.
On the hotdog, if Sanchez had eaten a power bar, nobody would say anything. Just another instance of idiotic criticism.
Did anyone notice the hit Michael Huff put on Shonne Green? It took SG a little while to recoup from that blast, and for a few minutes I wondered if he would, but he did, and I’m happy about it.
Sack,
Yes, that was the point I was trying to get across.
Another thing, everyone keeps wanting to say last rites over this team because of “lack of depth.” Jenkins was definitely missed, but when the Jets had to, they clogged the middle and stopped the running game. Also, everyone said the OL has no depth, anyone notice Robert Turner road grading after Moore left for a couple of series? And, Pitoitua finally got a deserved few plays and he had one of the hardest hits of the day. Leon and Jenkins are Pro Bowlers, but instead of Jets Nation all crying, we’re talking about Greene and how the Jets just dominated the Raiders, who only won the punting battle yesterday.
The Fins game is just HUGE. A win there would rival the Pats game as most satisfying win, so far, and would be a great way to enter the bye.
Yeah, Turner was great. I continue to have high hopes for him.
The run defense bent-but-didn’t-break, which I’d usually a pass defense philosophy, which I thought was interesting.
I’ve been arguing the “depth issue” for quite some time now. I have always believed that it is nearly impossible to judge offensive line depth. The majority of the backups never play unless there is an injury, and the only way to judge them is preseason, when they are going against other backups. I dont believe the Jets depth on the offensive line is anywhere near the issue it has been made out to be.
if ellis is hurt its not that big of a loss considering the jets are the only team in the nfl in which the defensive line has 0 sacks which is pathetic…it seems ellis hasnt got to the qb since abraham was traded to atlanta
the game next week against miami is a playoff game already…if the the jets win i like them to mak the playoffs…if they lose they are in big trouble
Ellis did have a 12 sack season without Abraham, but he has had a significant decrease in production. He had 7 sacks after 8 games last year, it would be nice to see him get a few, soon.
We also run a scheme where d-lineman don’t come away with many sacks. Frank, you can’t seriously mean losing Ellis wouldn’t be a big loss. The guy is our most versatile D-lineman (can play any position on the line) and still makes plays, despite what the stats would have you think.
Raiders averaged 3.3 ypc before this week, 6.9ypc vs. the Jenkins-less Jets.
In the first half, they rushed for 11ypc on First Down.
Cable should be fired for that gameplan, Jamarcus the fumble machine throwing on the first play of the game from his own ten with Jenkins out is a crime.
Jets would have won anyway, they were the better team, but the coach never gave them a chance.
