Ryan Tells Miami Press “Boo Hoo Hoo” on Dolphins Losing Will Allen

crybaby.jpgJust when you thought Rex Ryan couldn’t top himself with the press, he goes out and does something like this with Miami reporters this afternoon.

On a conference call Wednesday with South Florida media, a reporter asked Ryan about the Miami Dolphins being forced to start two rookie cornerbacks with Will Allen done for the year because of a knee injury.

The response was classic Ryan.

“I don’t care about that,” the audacious New York Jets coach said. “We lost a Pro Bowl nose tackle and a Pro Bowl running back.

“So boo hoo hoo.”

Awesome. Now go win that game rather than let the team drive all up your (AHEM) in the last two minutes.

  1. As a much as the statement is funny, it doesnt make us feel any better because Jenkins and Leon are out and will be out for the rest of the season.

  2. I don’t see what’s wrong with that statement. Is he supposed to be blandly politically correct and say he’s real sorry Allen isn’t in there, or that he won’t count the win unless Miami’s at full strength?

I guarantee the Phins will be running gleefully at that big void where Kris Jenkins usually is.

  3. This is why I love the freakin guy. Whatever happens, win or lose, I always respect the crap out of Rex Ryan. I truly believe that he is the guy that can get this team to the next level. Rex Ryan is to me what Eric Mangini is Hank and Fonzie

  4. Love it. Whoever asked that question is a moron.

  5. Looks a little like you, Bassett. Maybe on some draft day some years ago?

  6. I love the passion and mouth of Ryan but if they run the Wildcat down our throat again and Henne looks like J Montana….They get the last laugh

  7. I agree that he shouldn’t feel sorry for the Phins but why throw the “Boo Hoo Hoo” in there? This guy has the class of a five dollar hooker.

What would have been wrong with just leaving it at

“I don’t care about that,” the audacious New York Jets coach said. “We lost a Pro Bowl nose tackle and a Pro Bowl running back.”

That little thing at the end of the sentence is called a period, Ryan need to learn when to use one.

  8. Classless, and I love it!!!! For the simple fact thAt it’s MIAMI!!!

  9. Phil — You could have stopped after the first sentence of your first paragraph but decided to throw in an insult.

I saw nothing wrong with his humorous emphasis — at least it wasn’t insulting and rude.

  10. Phil:

    >>That little thing at the end of the sentence is called a period, Ryan need to learn when to use one.<<

    It's called audacity, guts, nerve.

You ought to learn to enjoy it.

  11. a cheap shot AND a burn. i like it.

  12. I usually prefer folks being quiet, but I must admit I’m amused.

  13. Rex is still mad Sanchez stole his hot dog on sunday!!!

  14. I’ll wait till after Sundays game to determine if it was funny or if it was without class and fired up the Phish.

  15. NVJ:

    >>I’ll wait till after Sundays game to determine if it was funny or if it was without class and fired up the Phish.<<

Really? You're going to tie this comment, (which in no way disses the fish BTW), ot our team's success or failure?

    Isn't that absurd?

"Damn, if only Rex hadn't joked about their injuries we'd have kicked their butts."

    REALLY?

  16. Just don’t know how that’s inflammatory. I could understand people being upset if he was criticizing the Fins play, coaches, the way they dress on the way to the games, whatever. He was just basically saying no one wants to hear anyone whining about injuries. We’ve had our own. It’s a tough business.

  17. Bassett,

I feel ya, but think your last “two minutes” killed my drive.

Take a second to think it out. Dean

  18. StvDoe:

Nam Jet fan only touched on PART of the problem—–

The biggest part of the problem is that peolpe will remeber you, even long after you are gone, by the image you created rather than your accomplishments.

All koolaide drinkers/wagoneers should understand that EVERYONE HATES an arrogant loud mouth.

Proof in fact is most fans hated the GREATEST BOXER THAT EVER LIVED (being UNDEFEATED 31-0) while witnessing the greatest event in sports history !!!

Can you imagine what they think of the JETS with a six win and five loss (6-5) record. Thats not even counting a 55% LIFETIME losing percentage.

Now ask yourselves, if and when the Jets do win a Super Bowl, how do you want your kids to remember your team? By its greatest accomplishment, or by its BIGGEST LOUD MOUTH?

  19. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  20. hey hank…

parcels is a loud mouth….i dont here anyone doing anything else but worshiping him….

rex ryan is a great coach and a franchise like the jets needs something to wake it up and give it a sense of “swagger” “confidence” what ever you want to call it….face it for years the players believed they were the SOJ…and now maybe that has changed….so why don’t you just sit back and enjoy the little bit of success we are having…?

  21. StvDoe: Guess you did not see my tongue firmly placed in cheek. It is all very silly isn’t it. My only concern with the Jets and Rex is what they do on the field on Sundays.

As far as Rex’s comment (and I think what we are talking about is his style)—maybe it is because I am a bit older—but it is just something that you do not do. I guess I am more a kind of person who likes quiet confidence. That was what I loved about Shonn Green when he scored—not need to overtly celebrate–he was doing his job.

But in the end it is OK for Rex to be who he is. If this franchise get’s turned around what he’s said will be light and funny—if he does not he will be an arrogant ass.

  22. “All koolaide drinkers/wagoneers should understand that EVERYONE HATES an arrogant loud mouth.”

Hank – Whether you agree of disagree with Rex Ryan’s approach, everyone does not hate him. I get the impression that he’s actually very popular around the league. Living where you do, I’m not surprised you get the impression that everyone hates him because of course Miami fans do, but among impartial fans all I ever see is “I love this guy”, “I wish he coached my team” and “He’s the best coach ever”. Yeah, they’re just buying into some of his jokes and trash talk, but that kind of stuff actually can make you popular rather than hated.

If the Jets win the Superbowl and having an unpopular coach is what it takes, then so be it. Rather that than having a bunch of great guys as head coach and never winning one. Do you think the Giants or Pats would swap their unpopular coach for a “nice guy that finishes last”?

  23. I am a Kool Aid drinker and I love a loadmouth arrogant attitude….

  24. Hank, to answer your question, I pray that if/when the Jets win a Superbowl, they get remembered as a brash, trash talking, bad ass muthaf*****’ band of psychos.

My favorite sports team, of all time, is the 1986 Mets. They were the last batch of true bad boys in sports. Didn’t care what anyone thought of them. Went out and kicked the tar out of people, talking trash and smiling as they do it. And know how they’re remembered? As possibly the best baseball team to every win a championship in NY.

It’s what you do, more than how you do it. If the jets fall flat on their faces this season, just like last season, then people will remember us for that, not that Rex said “boo hoo hoo” in a conference call in week 8.

  25. Just proves the Ryan doesn’t learn. Beat the Fins and then you talk.

Right now it is Fins 1 – Jets 0….

  26. What hasn’t Ryan learned? They were pestering him with questions about losing the Immortal Will Allen, and he said exactly what every other coach thinks. You don’t get pity in this league, you heard the Jets players say it after Jinx and Leon went down. No sympathy cards in the mail. I’m tired of people getting on Ryan for saying what everyone else is already thinking.

  27. NamVet Jet,

I’m not a kid either, but I remember lots of trash-talking back in the day, especially when the NFL coaches would trash the AFL. Didn’t the legendary Vince Lombardi flat out say that AFL teams weren’t as good as NFL teams? If you were an AFL fan, the reason our league was loved was BECAUSE there was excitement, brash personalities and tons of trash talking.

Rex’s Dad was the epitome of a trash-talking coach and he’s a legend. Rex said on the Showtime AFL documentary, which is awesome, that his Dad has 2 Super Bowl rings. You would think he cherishes the ‘86 Bears ring…he only wears 1, from Super Bowl III. IMO, Rex is a throwback, not a guy from a different generation.

  28. SD 99 or anyone that knows – why do you think Buddy Ryan wouldn’t wear his bears ring as well? He is known for being the mastermind of that D so you’d think he’d be especially proud of that. Something with Dikta perhaps?

  29. If I had to guess, NYCPE, it’d be because of the status of the win. The Bears Superbowl win was with a dominating defense that Buddy created, but it lacked the importance of the Superbowl III win. That win legitimized an entire league in one game. The AFL served notice that it wasn’t a minor league for the NFL to whoop on. Just speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that win meant more to Buddy for something along those lines.

  30. makes sense, thanks. I had thought that as well but Buddy created a D in chicago that is talked about as one of the all time greats. I guess I’m just surprised that he doesn’t wear both rings, LOL

  31. Ed L:

I keep hearing comparisons of Rex to Parcells. Two points:

1)Rex has NOT, not even a tenth, of Parcells football accomplishments. Not as a coach, GM VP of OP nor Part Owner (I understand he is or Miami offered him Stock) So to compare the two I would say is somewhat PREMATURE by,say, 10-20 years IF AT ALL !!!

    2) Parcells got in his players face, never EVER seen or heard him get or carry a dumb “cat” fight with another teams player!!!!

    3) I don’t care what the Coach or the players think. The record shows the ARE the SOJ. Only this time with an arrogant big mouth coach that even if he wins they’ll be hated even more !!!!

    4) Atleast let them prove it first so at least they’ve earned the right to talk. What have they earned so far?

  32. Rumor has it Rex was eating a hot dog while he said it.

  33. Bent:

“……everyone does not hate him. I get the impression that he’s actually very popular around the league”.

The impression that you get must be from reading all the biased media press that adores controversy, and we know Ryan loves to feed them tons.

Walk into ANY CITY that repects their team and tell me what you’ll hear about our team and our coach.

If you’re comparing us to other losers, then you’ll still have to dig deep to find “fans” that respects this guy AND SPECIALLY his father !!!!

  34. Hank,

Living in NYC I have tons of friends from different cities. Maybe 2 or 3 of my friends are actual Jets fans. Almost ALL of my friends that root for other teams (some of them even rival teams) love Rex. And they don’t just love him for his soundbytes. They’ve seen me torture myself with Jets teams year after year, and they see this as a new age for the Jets. So I fully back up Bent’s sentiment that other teams and their fans like Rex.

As for the Rex/Parcells comparison, it is there. They were both defensive assistants before becoming defensive coordinators. Both innovated defensive schemes. Both became head coaches in their 40’s after years as assistants. Both are tough, hard-nosed “take no ****” coaches. Both are sound-byte machines for the press. No one is saying Rex is Bill Parcells. But comparing them is reasonable at this stage of Rex’s career.

  35. Hank – no, I wasn’t talking about the media. He is pretty popular with the media, I guess, because he is a colorful character, but as we know, they will pile on as soon as he struggles.

I was specifically thinking about comments from fans on other NFL blogs whenever I seem to look at them.

Maybe the comments I’ve seen aren’t representative of NFL fans, but that was the impression I came away with. I haven’t come across any fans saying “I hate Rex Ryan, what a loudmouthed jerk” that weren’t Patriots and Dolphins fans that probably were saying “I hate Mangini, what a rat / idiot / fatass / whatever” before Rex Ryan was the coach because they are going to hate the Jets coach whoever it is.

  36. Brendan:

I like most loyal, true diehard, New Yorkers, LOVED the Brooklyn Dodgers so when they moved you automaticaly became a Mets fan when they were formed in 1960.

I remember the ‘86 team. Davey Johnson, with his cowboy boots and blunt approach, was and is still my most favorite Manager.

I remember the team, the Series, Buckner and all.

I can tell you that from Dykstra to Backman to Grote to Davey, not one, not ONE, came even close to pulling the BS arrogant talk that Ryan is pulling with the Jets.

As a matter of fact, and I’ve been a dieahard sports fan of ALL NY teams, Yes including the ABA L.I. Coliseum Nets, and NEVER has there been a spectacle like Rex RYAN !!!

  37. Bent:

And thank again for bringing up Mangini.

Now that we are on the suject, let me say that he is one of the……….

  38. Hank,

That is just plain false. The ‘86 Mets trash talked with the best of ‘em. The called out the Cards, Astros, and Red Sox. They were arrogant. They were rude to the media. They were boozehounds who went out every night and made headlines brawling, womanizing and getting arrested. If that team was around in 2009, the entire world of sports media would be losing it’s friggin mind. To say that Rex Ryan is the biggest ’spectacle’ that NY sports has ever seen may be the most insane comment you’ve made on this blog, and that is saying something.

  39. “biggest spectacle” that NY sports has ever seen?

In a city that has hosted Reggie Jackson, Joe Nameth, Lawrence Taylor?

    come on Hank

  40. Brendan:

I guess you stopped reading before you got to the part where I say: you can’t compare accomplishments : “Not as a coach, GM VP of OP nor Part Owner (I understand he is or Miami offered him Stock)”

You said your friends have “……seen me torture myself with Jets teams year after year,”

I guess you’ve been impervious to the last three loses?

  41. That Muhammed Ali is universally hated for his trash talk and brash cockiness, right?

  42. Jesus:

You missed the rest of the definition of “Spectacle” which is: “an unwelcomed or deplorable exhibition, a painful sight”.

I don’t think your examples fit that definition.

  43. No Hank, I didn’t stop reading. But Ed was comparing Rex and Parcell’s makeup and personality. I guess you stopped reading after the first sentence of his post.

I have been tortured by the Jets, as have you. The only difference is I’m glass-half-full, and you are glass-half-full-of-poison. Am I impervious to three weeks of losing? Absolutely not. I broke my fair share of beer mugs in those 3 weeks, for sure. But I don’t write that off as SOJ because we lose a few games. I don’t know why you insist on carrying the SOJ cross, but give it a rest. This team is it’s own entity, and with exceptional veteran leadership, and a coaching staff finding itself as the bye approaches, I refuse to look at a 4-3 record (when most ‘experts’ had us pegged for a 2-5, 3-4 record at best) as a SOJ failure.

  44. Hank,

The fact that you think a few months of Rex and his team talking some trash is the biggest spectacle in NY Sports HISTORY is insane. NY Sports has been around since the dawn of the modern sports era (dating back to the turn of the century for the major sports). And in over a century of multiple sports with multiple teams, you think Rex calling out someone or some team is the biggest spectacle. My god that’s ridiculous.

  45. Glass half empty? Hank is more like a glass completely empty with several cracks in it. You cant find a more pessimistic fan.

    Hank,

I did miss the beginning of the discussion, either way I disagree with you about Ryan, even if its for the simple fact that he has only coached his team for 7 games and its way too early to start making those types of judgments on him. I personally believe that Rex is absolutely ecstatic about finally being a head coach, for a team who his father once coached for, and some of the things he says are a result of his overall excitement. I expect his comments and brash talking to digress, and I disagree that he is hated around the NFL

  46. Bent:

Atfer greatest achievemnt of reaching 31-0, at his greatest moment at MSG, Ali was generally despised as a loud mouth, arrogant kid by most fans and wanted Frazier, “the White Peoples Champion” to punish and teach CLAY a lesson, !!!

It took several epic battles (and AFRICA) after that for Ali to start getting recognition as “worlds most recognized figure”. But even today, he is still not recognized as the greatest fighter in history in part because of his “political” legacy.

  47. Brendan:

I did read and understood Ed L’s comments when he said “….parcels is a loud mouth….i dont here anyone doing anything else but worshiping him….”

If you think he is saying that Parcells is worshiped because he is a loud mouth just like Rex then I strongly suggest you go back and re read his comments.

Ryan is a “great coach” @ 4-3? Really?

  48. My God Hank,

Yes, Ryan is a great coach. Know what makes him a great coach? His players would run through a brick wall for him without hesitation. As a former athlete, the men I considered great coaches spoke to me as a man, not a subordinate. Rex treats his players like men, and doesn’t control them a la your boy Mangini. I know you’ll say the only way to measure a great coach is on the field. Well, Ryan took a team everyone expected to be mediocre at best, and has them right int he thick of the playoff hunt. A win this weekend and we’re on a path that leads to a playoff birth, and possibly a AFC East division crown. Not bad for a ’spectacle’ of a rookie head coach.

I read Ed’s comments and understand them. You pull a partial quote out as if it’s Ed’s overall point. His point was about their makeup. Personality. Brashness. They have very similar football DNA makeups. They both want to win more than anyone else in that stadium. Ultimate competitors that refuse to accept a loss, whether it happens or not. Anyone who thinks Rex is on the same level as Parcells is clearly wrong, but no one is saying that. What we’re saying is we see a lot of young Parcells in the way Rex coaches, acts, speaks, etc.

  49. Jesus:

Wow, I find some of what you are saying to be partly true specially when you said 7 games is too early….

But that is exactly my point. Where has he earned the right to be so arrogant, loud mouth Head Coach. What has he earned . What has his father earned as a head coach?

The huge difference is that with the Rvens Rex was obnaxious within the confine of the locker room and the local press. He was muzzled so to speak. Now he speaks infron of the national press and his ego has exploded !!!

I don’t beleive in fighting with your mouth because there will always be someone bigger to put your foot in it.

But if you are, at least earn it, this way you will only look like half a fool.

  50. Brendan:

Just started to read your comments but have to run….

My first observation is that they sound like a punch drunk fighter.

  51. I just don’t see Ryan’s comments as being so derogatory to anyone. He basically said the Dolphins shouldn’t whine about injuries, everyone has them. He agreed with Ronnie Brown’s comment that the “toughest 11 will win.” He said he took the loss “personally,” and can’t wait to play them again. He said he believes the outcome is going to be different this time.

That’s the worst trash talking in NY sports history? Worse than Joe Namath guaranteeing a SB victory over the best team in the NFL, the heavily favored Colts?

At least Ryan comes out and says what he actually feels, as opposed to Belichick, who makes snidely, disingenuous comments about respecting the Jets while tossing in belittling, insulting comments about going down to play them in “Giants Stadium.”

  52. Sure, Hank. Punch drunk. Or bored at work and tired of watching you put down our head Coach while pumping up some penguin shaped wax statue who chews gum on the sideline like some bovine chomping on cod.

What has Rex earned? He earned the right to be a head coach, in his own way, and be himself. He’s not putting on a show, he is being himself.

And his father? He oversaw the greatest defense in the history of the NFL (or one of the few in the discussion). He coached our Jets during their lone Superbowl. There’s more than one way to skin a cat (not that we need even one way to skin a cat…weird expression) and Rex is trying his out. So far, I love what I see.

  53. Ryan is a great coach based on performance:

During Ryan’s tenure, the Ravens defense never ranked lower than sixth in the NFL. Since 1999, the Ravens rank first for fewest points allowed (17.1 per game), fewest rushing yards allowed per game (87.3), most shutouts (9), most takeaways (337), most interceptions (212), most interceptions for touchdowns (29) and third down conversion defense (33.9 percent). They rank second in the NFL since 1999 in total defense (280.7) and fourth in sacks (416). In those 10 seasons, the Ravens allowed an NFL-low 18 100-yard rushers, including none over the last 35 games.

Whether he is a great Head Coach remains to be seen. It will take more than seven games to determine that but, at 4-3, he is currently outperforming the expectations of virtually every credentialed NFL prognosticator.

  54. Hank – You’ve proved my point about Ali. Yes, he was despised at the time, but now, history remembers him fondly and you originally said:

“Now ask yourselves, if and when the Jets do win a Super Bowl, how do you want your kids to remember your team? By its greatest accomplishment, or by its BIGGEST LOUD MOUTH?”

So, my point was that I think if he wins a Superbowl, people will remember the fact that he was a success, not his negative points.

  55. - Brendan

What doesn’t he learn.. interesting question.

How about he doesnt say Boo Hoo… I think if he says -injuries are part of the game, that doesn’t really change our game plan, we had a couple of big injuries oursleves lately….

I guess the reporters were trying to Goat him into a comment – and i guess in this case they were successful.

    time to learn

and for those attempting to compare Rex to Ali or Parcells – well right now in history you are NUTs

  56. So now we’re going to nit pick over wordage? I don’t care how nicely he puts it, he is saying what we, the team, the media, opposing players, opposing coaches, and opposing fan bases all know already.

And no one is comparing Rex to Ali or Parcells in terms of career and history. Ali and Parcells have pretty much ended their legacies, while Rex is just beginning his. What people were trying to say is, is that Rex and Parcells are similar people. Not similar in career arcs, similar in personality/character/speech/mindsets/etc. Bent was saying that if Rex ever wins a Superbowl, people will remember him in a similar fashion that they remember Ali. Not for his verbal barrages (although that is part of it), but for his end result. Being the best at one time or another.

  57. Nobody was comparing Rex Ryan to Ali. I actually compared the trash talking of a hypothetical superbowl winning head coach to the trash talking of a great former boxing champion to illustrate how such a person might be perceived by some hypothetical kids I might one day father.

P.S. We don’t allow name calling or personal attacks on this site.

  58. Bent -

You think i was calling someone a name or personally attacking them? I guess i was talking of a hypothetical person who might actually think Ryan is in that class right now.

Let’s see how when the JETS can get to double digit wins before we start theorizing the greatness of Ryan.

His dad was a great D coach and a terrible terrible HC – let’s hope the apple fell very very far in this case.

  59. I think this whole issue comes down to there being two types of fans in pro sports:

Those who are proud of their teams because they succeed, and those who are proud of their teams regardless of their success or failure.

The former live in dread of failure, the latter don’t.

Rex is a problem for the former, not the latter. Rex’s mouth scares the former, not the latter.

We all want our team to win, but only the former fear we’ll lose.

I’m glad I’m of the latter because I get to enjoy the games whatever happens.

If you’re a player, you damn well want NONE of the latter on your team. I understand why some fans feel that they need to share that attitude. But in reality they don’t. Our attitudes have no bearing on the team.

Should we ever win another Super Bowl, we’ll all enjoy the victory equally, but only some of us will enjoy the ride regardless of the outcome.

  60. NFLFan – That’s fine. If you were calling ME “nuts”, then we would have a problem…whereas if you were calling a hypothetical person that would believe Rex is in the same class as someone like Ali “nuts” because you can’t believe anyone would put him on such a level without being crazy (and at the same time accepting that my explanation proves that this was not what I was saying), then it’s all good.

That made sense in my head, honestly.

  61. If calling someone nuts is going to be perceived as a personal attack I’m fearful that I will no longer be allowed to post on this site.

  62. Once and for all:

Who gives a hell if we’re hated? It’s better to be hated than to be irrelevant. As long as Rex wins football games he could be the world’s most hated man. I couldn’t care less. What’s with the obsession that our coach be liked? Why does it matter to you?

  63. Bent:

Making belive this is all hypothetical, then we must assume this would not count because in reality it would not exist.

Am I right to say this all conjecture, Bent and therefore consider this whole discussion moot !!!

  64. Joe B.

You’re a man after my own heart. Applause, applause !!!

  65. Hank – I can’t disagree with that kind of logic.

    Conclusion: Go Jets!

  66. I have 2 field level seats for sale on ebay. Check out my listing. I have “buy it now” or ‘best offer’

  67. Bent:

Right on, right on, right on !!!

One last comment. Every time I come to this thread to post, I swear that baby looks more and more like Bassett. Don’t you agree?

  68. Hey Hank,
we missed you last week when Shonn Greene (the guy Tanny gave up too much for) ran all over the Raiders. You call people wagoners, but you yourself crawl back under whatever rock you call home whenever the Jets win and you can’t pile up your own anti-Jet, Woody-Tanny-Rex-Sanchez BS. You are on your own bandwagon

Drinking a tall glass of green kool-aid before bed, keep ducking me you Mary
