Taming of the Cat!!!

Can they?  Can the Jets stop the Wildcat? They couldn’t the last time they faced the Dolphins.  It’s a shame that Gang Green didn’t employ that “Seminole” offense more with Leon Washington this season.  Maybe they’ll start it up with Shonn Greene.

The Dolphins ran the Wildcat a season-high 16 times, accounting for 110 yards – 89 on the ground, 21 on a pass completion. The Jets acted like they hadn’t seen it before, missing at least one tackle on five of those plays and yielding nearly eight yards per carry on outside runs – and that was with Kris Jenkins at nose tackle. Now he’s done for the season.

What do you think?  Over/Under on Wildcat plays this Sunday:  12.  Any takers?

  1. Not much of a fan of Shonn Greene in the Seminole, but you are forgetting that our best QB in the formation has been injured for a while — Smith. I think he is a better Seminole leader than Leon, being an ex-QB.

I’ll take the under on the WC from MIami for a few reasons. One, they will be losing, which cuts down the amount of wildcats. Also, they will have more three and outs than last game, which cuts down their time of possession. Lastly, I think Henning tries to throw a curveball by running less WC early on, and it bites him in the ass, giving us that early lead, which leads to the first two points.

  2. I go under as well. I think Miami tries to make this Henne’s coming out party. With Will Allen out for the season you have to figure a pass-heavy attack… In this league you have to match points with points… and I forsee a huge passing game.

  3. Under, I think the Dolphins know the Jets and Rex are on to something, so I think they won’t use the wildcat as much as they did in week 5, and plus it kinda scares them that Rex was looking at the Game until like Thursday, which probably resulted in the Bills loss. Or maybe they just might be arrogant and overuse the wildcat anyway.

I thought Henne’s coming out party was against us three weeks ago? It’s gonna be interesting to see how Schotty calls this game. On the one hand, the weather should be fine, Sanchise has his full complement of receivers and the Dolphins are without Allen. On the other hand, how do you go away from the run after back-to-back 300-yard games?

  5. I say over. It all depends on how the first few series break. If they get the wildcard going early, they’ll stick with it late into the game even if its success tapers off. Conversely, if it is unsuccessful early, they may stay away from it later in the game.

My personal bet, as I mentioned above, is that they will run it over 12 times. I think the Dolphins will get the ball first and score a field goal on the first possession, giving them carte blanche to use it as long as they’re either ahead or down by less than two scores.

  6. i think they will try to run it all day even if we keep stopping it they will just keep running variations of it…wouldn’t be surprised if they ran it 15-20 times.

  7. I would say over but then again I was shocked they went away from it with such a big lead over the Saints.

  8. I really think they can (stop the ‘cat) – and I’d say the Dolphins give up after about 10 tries. Although, a mediocre performance from Henne could mean they start it back up late in the game. Ryan is defensive mastermind, and I would find it hard to believe that he hasn’t drilled the remedy into the front 7 all week long.

I know missing Jenkins is huge, but defending the wildcat really comes down to discipline. It’s there to get 7+ yards an attempt, so if it’s held to 3-4 average, they’ll give up on it pretty quickly.

It’ll probably be a close game until the 3rd quarter, then look for the Jets to pull away with 2 scores. The Dolphins have no comeback powers because they rely on the run so much.

    IMHO

  9. joe B,

Yeah, Henne had a great game, but I’m sure the team would like to eventually motion away from the gimmicky nature of the wildcat. Against the Jets they lined up Brown, Williams, Henne and White behind center…maybe even Cobbs.

I think if Henne is going to become their “future” they need to let him settle in… and trust him in the fourth quarter rather than rotate signal callers and have 4 RB sets.

  10. Joe B,

Also, will be the first game (since Miami actually) that we’ll have our WR corp back at full strength playing against a legit run-D. Don’t get me wrong… I would love to see us run for 300 every game… I just don’t see it happening this week.

  11. First Jets play, play-action deep to either Cloweney or Edwards, because of overly playing the run and 2 rookie CB

  12. I think the Dolphins will run the wildcat 20 times, if the Jets don’t stop them. They did not impress with their run defense against the Raiders, so I think they will struggle against the Fish on Sunday. I also think they will stay on the field longer than anybody would like, but play better than their last meeting and force a couple of turnovers/get a couple of sacks.

  13. Over. We couldn’t stop the cat the last time, so my guess is that Miami makes us stop it by running it over and over again.

As for the Seminole, I agree with greg: Brad Smith is our best weapon in that formation. Would love to see a double reverse to Brad with the option to pass deep to the Clown, or Woodhead underneath, while Braylon & JCo draw away all the coverage.

  14. +20. Easy. Why wouldn’t they? They ran all over them last time. Respect is earned. And the JETS are bi-z-not-ches from Miami’s POV. So… finger’s crossed, but not banking on nothin’.

  15. Why do the Jets still carry 4 QBs ?

  16. 20+. Will run it until the Jets stop it, and so far they have not come close to doing so.

This is not a gimmick for this team, it is essentially their base offense. Reading the MIA papers, the coaches totally regret going away from it last week, so it only makes sense they will run it all day today.

As for the “Jets” Seminole, it should be retired. It was not very successful to begin with and without Leon it simply makes no sense and is completely unecessary they way the running game is firing on all cylinders right now.

Brad Smith sucks on offense (800 total yards from scrimmage lifetime) and would be cut if not for his great special team ability. He scares no one, his skills have not translated to the NFL.

He has done nothing to warrant additional reps and should be buried on the depth chart now that Clowney has proven to be a capable every day receiver.

  17. Chris, it does seem like overkill but Clemens will be gone next year and they like the other two so guess they dont want to have to look for a QB in the offseason.

  18. WOJF, Brad Smith has a 10.8 yds rushing avg. this year (5 youches) and 6.7 yds lifetime in his 50 or so limited touches in 4 seasons. He may not be a great receiver yet, but he can be effectively used in the right situations. That is on the coaches do so. Be patient, he was a QB and is still learning and honing his WR skills.

  19. i think Jenkins absense will leave holes for the LBs to get into, that or Ronnie will.

  20. I think today we are going to see alot of players on defense step it up big time in the absence of jenkins…look for tight discipline and gap control. this will be a game of finesse and if the jets can control the LOS then i like our chances with pace and thomas on the outside – like bush said “we’re gonna smoke em outta their holes” !!

  21. For all the hype the Wildcat got against us, it was Henne’s passing that beat us. He went 20-26 for 240 yards and two TDs. I’m more worried about shutting down the passing than I am the running game.

If we can shut down Henne we’ll win regardless of what the single wing offense does.
