Game Recap: Bent’s Trip To America Ends in Tragedy

Our colleague, Bent, traveled to the United States this week for a look-see and a Jets game.  Tail-gaters were heard to O-o-h and A-h-h when the British celebrity passed by their car trunks, hat in hand, pleading for a hot meat pattie, or some other such American version of a British treat.   Bent’s real objective, however, was not a slab of greasy, fried fish or a lengthy grilled sausage on a roll.  What the man really wanted, was a Jets’ win going into the bye, but it was not to be.  The Jets, as it turns out, are a work in progress, and it may take until this time next season before we are a real contender.  Right now, pretender just about covers it.

As for the game, take away the atrocious coverage on two consecutive 100 yard (give or take) kickoff returns in the third quarter and the Jets win easily.  Take away the two, unnecessary, two-point conversions which were both unsuccessful and the teams are still playing in a tie.  Take away the Shonn Greene fumble, and it’s a Jets win.   But, adding all that up, the Jets still had a chance to win with more than a minute to go and the ball on the Dolphins nine yard line.  That’s when Alan Faneca, the multi-million dollar Offensive Guard, once again missed a block which drove the Jets out of gimme range and cost the team a crucial third down (Without looking at the tape it’s hard to know, but his man also got free and blew up the second down play, so we may wish to thank Alan still more).   Take away all the ugly, and you’ve got a nice, easy win.   But, ugly counts.

As for our rookie quarterback: better, a lot better.  But, he got off to a very tenuous start that cost the Jets points in the first half.  This young man needs seasoning before he can furnish a fourth quarter comeback.   I can’t tell you how hard I wish he had that in him now, but no cigar.  Not yet.  For those of you who are disappointed in the young man, two things:  He’s got the talent.  You couldn’t have seen the second half without knowing that.  And, he’s going to be able to give us the magnificent endings before long.   Give him time.  This kid, with good receivers and confidence, can win games.

There isn’t much to summarize (and I’d have to spill blood if I had to retell the story of the game in detail, so don’t expect me to).  The defense was heroic.  They gave up seven points, total.  Fifty-two yards rushing and 112 yards passing and the wildcat had one first down for the entire game.  If anything, it was a negative.   The Jets dominated the Miami offense for all but one series in the fourth quarter.  You could not have expected more.

The offense missed a lot of opportunities undoubtedly costing them points in the first half.  It was a question of rhythm and game plan, which I have to say, was peculiar.  On the first four series, the Jets came out determined to run and run they did.  By the fourth series near the end of the first quarter, Thomas Jones was thrown into the line repeatedly and they racked up four first downs driving it down to the nine.  But, then, inexplicably, Schottenheimer called a sequence we have all grown to hate: run-pass-pass.  The result was predictable, three points instead of seven.

Then, on the next series, after a successful run by TJ for eleven, once again, run-pass-pass.  Not only was it unimaginative play calling but, the fact was, Sanchez had hardly thrown the ball since the previous Dolphins game.  He was tentative and inaccurate missing a number of good opportunities.  Perhaps we shouldn’t blame the play calling but the run was working.  Why change it?  The next two series more of the same.  First pass-run-pass (3 and out), then pass-pass-pass (3 and out again).  Could Brian Schottenheimer simply be addled, or did he mean to abandon a strategy that was working and wearing down the Miami defense?  The game was 3-3 and your defense is playing like the Monsters of the Midway.  Be patient.  The mistakes will come.  Am I wrong?

In any event, the offense finally found some nice rhythm but not until after the disastrous special teams sequence made the game into a track meet with the Jets down by 14.  Shonn Greene fumbled into the hands of the defense, but he’s a rookie.  We expect them to make mistakes.  I know he gave up seven and we lost by five, but you can’t hang this loss on him.

Special teams lost this game.  First, Weatherford’s punting is barely NFL quality.  The only Dolphins’ points of the first half were set up by a lousy 38 yard punt in the second quarter.  It didn’t help that the Dolphins punter, Fields, was creaming the ball giving Shane Lechler a run for his money.   Then there were the two infamous returns in the third quarter.  Coverage was awful.  Izzo, the only sure tackler was easily out maneuvered but there seemed to be no one else at the point of attack.  Then, no one could make the tackle after that.  That is unforgiveable.  If Strickland, who is good but not 100% is our last resort, we’re in trouble and, in part, it cost us the game.

But, then, to kick away again after the first one hundred yard return?  Hubris, nothing but hubris.  What were they thinking?  I could have asked third graders what they would do in that situation and gotten a chorus of “Squibb it, dunderheads, they got no offense.”   Since we were clearly vulnerable on kickoff coverage, why not squibb it?  So they get the ball on the 35.  Where are they going with it?

As for the coaching, this game was not their shining moment, either.  Two point conversions to gain what advantage?  You’re five points down, make it four.  Then a field goal can’t hurt you.  You can always tie.  Eleven down.? Make it ten and you don’t need to execute a two-pointer on the next one if you miss it.  What happened?  Instead of being within three points in the fourth quarter on fourth down at the nine, they were five down and had to go for the touch.  They were short two extra points.   No touch.  No win.

So, as for me, I am lowering my expectations.  I think this defense is going to be a force.  I also think this quarterback, now that he’s got some receiving threats, is also going to be a force.  But, for now, there’s just too much work to do and the absence of Leon Washington is hurting a lot.  I think they’ll win more than four in the second half.  But, the easy part of the schedule is nearly over.  There aren’t many sure wins on tap.  Five more wins is just about all we can hope for.  No playoffs.  That’s probably off the table.  But, there’s promise.  For now, that’ll have to do.  It’s the break, boys and girls.  Two weeks of misery and only a nasty loss to look back on.  But, the team is 4-4 and has some promise for the future.  When that future is realized, I guess we’ll know it when we see it.  For now, it remains the ugly present.  Any room on that flight to England, Bent?  I could use a break myself.

  1. It’s official, I hate the Fins more than the Pats

  2. Of all the units, I never expected Westoff’s to breakdown.

  3. You should hate the Jets not the Fins. The Jets lost another game

  4. Not a fan of 3 straight pass plays on 2nd and 6 for the NFL’s leading ground game to end the game.

  5. A few things:

Re: kicking to Ginn the second time. If anything that was the one we should have had wrapped up- Izzo and I think another player (51???) missed tackles so they were not completely outschemed again.

-I agree the playcalling was a bit predictable in the first half but still if not for the three long returns they still would have won.

And as for the two point conversions- the second one they definitely had to go for, the first one was questionable but I didn’t mind the call. And Miami went for one they shouldn’t have either so it kind of averaged out (and their decision was worse than either of the Jet ones)

  6. Nyckage, I’m sure the second game against the pats will make you rethink that.

Where are Wallace wright’s sure ST tackles? Is brad smith still injured?

I mean seriously. Why? Why would not run the ball on 2nd Down & try to make it 3 yards or less to get a 1st down? Terrible play calling.

And another thing, do quick slants exist in this offense? We’ve got two big physical receivers & i rarely see them running short routes over the middle.

  8. AFC Playoff picture

    Division Winners
    Colts, Patriats, Steelers, Broncos

    Wildcard
    Bengals 5-2
    Texans 5-3
    ___________________
    Ravens 4-3
    Chargers 3-3
    Jaguars 3-3
    Jets 4-4
    Dolphins 3-4

One of the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals will drop out because they’ll beat on up each other. Same goes for the Patriats, Jets and Dolphins. The Chargers are not a good team at all. Their only saving grace is that they are in a horrible division but that may not be enough to save them.
We won the head to head battle vs the Texans.
We have a game against the Jaguars at home coming soon and end the year with the Bengals at home.
We are right in the thick of things. We get the bye week at a great time, right at midseason. We can work on some things, get healthy, study some more film and we’ll be in it til the end.

  9. Bent:

I LOVE YOU MAN, KEEP THE FAITH !!!

Check out First (1st) Ave. after 10: PM

  10. 1st kickoff return is all on Feely. A line drive kick to the goal line. At best we could have only stopped them on the 40.

The penalty on the successful 2 point conversion was killer (I still didnt see the penalty)

The ending of this game is exactly the same as the last game, the only difference is that Miami were down 3 last game on their final drive. On the other hand, we were suppose to be down 3 if it wasnt for the penalty mentioned above.
But as we see from the standings above, nothing has been decided yet.

  11. this should have been 25-9, Jets win, but one day the D plays good and the Offense stinks it up, the next its vice versa, now when they both actually play great, it has to be the Special Teams to keep the Same ol Jets phrase stuck in my head.

  12. well that sucked.

we’re not making the playoffs guys, just get that stupid thought out of your head. Wouldn’t even want to see this embarrassing squad playing in the post season. After this loss, home games just became an excuse to kill a couple thousand brain cells in the parking lot each sunday.

    terrible coaching, period.

  13. it is impossible to tolerate:

    1) two penalties and a burned timout on 2pt tries,.
    2) schottenheimer’s total lack of feel for momentum of game in calling his plays
    3) not running the ball with the spread offense on 2nd and 6 from the 8 when you just blasted them
    4) rex’ not at least throwing the red flag on that fumble.

scottenheimer must go – let callahan call the plays – he’s won something, schott is sh-t and hasn;t won anywthing

  14. Who would of thought with the D playing well and the offense doing ok (especially in the 2nd half), that it would be special teams that did us in. SPECIAL TEAMS! How on earth do you give up the 2nd TD, after being burned on the 1st. Unbelievable

  15. And then to make it worse, I’m watchin favre just dissect the GB secondary with ease………I long for the day to have a reliable qb.

  16. When is this Organization going to realize that we cannot WIN with schotty calling the Plays.

  17. I also thought offense was too conservative in the 1st half. I know we are a running team but there is no way for Sanchez to get into any kind of rhythm throwing once every 5 or 6 plays. Why have we thrown one screen in weeks. Why no draws? etc etc. etc

  18. Schotty does have to go after the season.

  19. this team could only get better the jets need to play every team same they should of open it up sanchez plays the fins good but if you notice they had him locked down in the first half it should of been a rout by the jets fins cant stop the past that should of been the plan we will get better but callahan should run the offense shottie chocks on his calls at crunch time

  20. “Same Old JETS!” Every week it is something new. When dumb luck happens and everything works, they win. Mostly they lose. This is why I refused to pay Woody The Weasels extortion fees disguised as PSL fees. And this is why I have given up on the JETS after the first Fish loss. Fortunately I wasn’t able to see today’s or I probably would have puked.
What the JETS need is a winner like Derek Jeter on their team. They don’t have a winning tradition thus they don’t win consistently. There is only one owner in the NY metropolitan area that is fully committed to winning every year and that is George “The Boss” Steinbrenner. It is too bad he didn’t buy the JETS.

  21. sigh. I hate to always be the voice of opposition, alas poor Yorick (that’s for Bent and the other misguided members of the fallen empire who come from a place where they play football with their feet and give out yellow cards for being mean) but that appears to be my fate. But can we give a rest to the blame Schotty for everything crap?

Last year he was tossed a moody “icon” who came to camp at the last second and then demanded that the offense be tossed out in favor of 5 plays, total, that;s right 5 total plays, that he wanted to run. Ok maybe that was an exaggeration. Maybe it was 8 plays. Bottom line, the offense was limited to what Favre agreed to run and it was fine until he got hurt/old/bored. Maybe it’s me but I don’t remember him taking a lot of heat when we were 8-3 and playoff bound. This year, he was given a very raw, very young rookie QB with a ton of potential, a very short resume and a fragile psyche and told to win immediately but don’t you dare bruise his confidence, particularly after he starts throwing picks like they are daisies because he is being paid a metric pant load and will be the face of this organization for a decade. Alrighty then.

Same with today. We have a team that ran for 300 yards in each of the previous 2 weeks. That has been done a total of 6 times in NFL history. Does Schotty get props for that? Or does he just get hacked for the fact that we were dominating the fish on O today before the special teams gave it up like a coke whore 2 days after her last fix?

Did Schotty throw those dog poo passes in the first half or did Sanchez? Did Sanchez call that impressive 2nd half game plan after being down by 2 scores or did Schotty?

    Schotty is not our problem.

  22. That’s right tyrone. The fins were starting 2 rookie corners against or wide outs. How can you not pass more. I like the running but you have got to play smart. You can’t expect to run for 300 yds every game

  23. #51 is Ryan Fowler.
No idea who he is, but he cost us 7 points on the second kickoff return for TD.

  24. Hey PrEd(itor:

Are you nback, are you really back?)

  25. The jets should just have a mass suicide and kill them selves….I hate the jets now, Im sick of the BS

  26. Firstdown77- I thought Izzo was more responsible than Fowler, but either way they were to blame more than poor scheming/kicking the ball to Ginn. And I just watched the highlights on NFL.com and the broadcaster said the Fins call to go for 2 was curious but not the Jets ones.

  27. Wow, who knew less than a decade later, we’d all be missing Paul Hackett’s conservative play calling.

  28. Be happy we dont have to endure any heartache next Sunday

  29. 2 weeks to rest any body needs mental rehab

  30. we will be there at the end we are 4/4 not 2/5 remember 2002 its not over yet you guys jets needed 3 runs not 3 desperation pass shottie blow that another coach wins that game on the run sanchez is a rookie you cant expect him to win a game like that 2 min 1st 10 inside 20 you have to call run plays maybe a screen pass first down its what they needed to close game and win

  31. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  32. OK. So, we’re .500 at the midway point.

That’s what we are. That’s who we are. With 8 games to go. Tuna said it a long time ago: You are what your record says you are. Period.

Now, do we go forward? Go backward? Stay at that level throughout?

Many folks thought 8-8 for the year, which is where we’re heading at the moment — although no one could have expected the exact path we’ve taken. We’ve beaten those who should have beaten us, and we’ve lost to those whom we should have beaten. Go figure.

I, for one, think our expectations change at this point. While it’s Rex’s job to keep the team focused on winning the SB, that’s a less realistic goal for us on the outside of the clubhouse. Seems we’re now in a early stage of a soon-to-be dominant club. Injuries have hurt as they have for every team, so that’s not a factor. What are the missing pieces?

How far have we come with a rookie HC and a rookie QB? Where are we going? How high can we actually hope to reach this year? What needs to be added or subtracted for next year to take us to the next level?

  33. I figured this would go to the end and it did. We just can’t seem to seal the deal. I suppose the Jets are not who I thought they were….they let’em off the hook. Lot’s of ways we could have won this one and the only thing I wish was we would have run it our last 3 plays. Oh well……..

  34. Special Teams lost this game. The two KO returns for TDs, the poor punting of Weatherford and the penalty that denied a successful 2 point conversion are what killed them. Probably the worse total special teams game a Westhoff coached team has ever had.

  35. Am I the only one who looks at the past 40 years and realizes that during every season it’s just one predictable excuse after another why this franchise continues to lose and disappoint? I don’t think so.

How about implementing a pay for performance plan?
    :-)

  36. I think the Carolina, Tampa, Jags and Bills game is a win, Bengals and Falcons at home, well their winnable, but the games that scare me are when we have to go to Indy and NE.

  37. I hope Rex and Co. will finally shut the f__k up. Talking smack and then not backing it up — REPEATEDLY — shameful. I’ve been a Jets fan for 30 years, but can’t remember a time I’ve been more embarrassed then today.

I hope the players and coaching staff feel worse than I do.

  38. I’ve been a Jets fan my whole life and its days like this that hurt the most. The jets outplayed the fins on both sides of the ball and lost the game on special teams……who would’ve ever thought the jets would shut down ricky and ronnie and still loose. Its to early to say “same old jets” but…um….same old jets.

  39. mike-

    Good analysis.

I fall into the camp of I thought we would be about where we are now. We have the makings of a damn fine team but we aren’t there yet.

At the end of last year we had a very good O line, a very good run game and a couple good weapons at receiver. We lost one, Coles, and it took some time to find a new play maker and it cost us (anybody remember Trunsik who was a stalwart on the kick return team?). Oh yea, and then we replaced a first ballot hall of fame QB with a rookie who started one year in college. Who could have seen struggles coming?

Sanchez is raw but he flashes and the receiving corp we have now is one we can grow with and be as good as anyone. The run game speaks for itself. This is going to be a very, very good offense over the next decade.

Our D was ok last year but they are developing into a dominant bunch. We haven’t had our first team together much, one game actually, because of suspensions and injuries and they are still learning a new D but they are showing signs of being one of the best.

Ironically, the special teams (ahem* Trunsik) has been one of our strengths and they cost us the game today. Justin Miller was Justa Guy, never understood why so many here were wet over bringing him back. But Feely was very good on field goals and kick offs save for the line drive that went the other way.

I don’t believe in curses or whatever the SOJ crap is supposed to mean. We have the talent to win on this team. Once this team starts believing in itself and the talent they have we will win. I expect to see a much more confident team after the bye. We may get into the playoffs this year, probably not, but we have the core of a very good team going forward.

All I ask is they shut up and play ball. After they win the championship they can talk. Until then, just play.

  40. we can easily finish this season 6-2 to end 10-6. the only question is will that be enough?

jax, @ ne, car, @ buf, @ tb, atl, @ indy, cin

    W W W W W W L W

    then again knowing the jets…

    L L W W W W L L

  41. 10-6 should deffinetly be enough, i think we could even get in on 9-7. The AFC is having a bit of a down year with the chargers looking week, and the titans waaaaaayyyy out of it the jets have a good shot at the wild card. And remeber we own the tiebreaker with houston.

  42. Anybody think the Jets will do better than 8-8? I can’t see them managing more than 4 wins from their next 8 opponents. I’m not a same-old-jets believer, but I must say that the way the Jets have lost games this season would support that way of thinking. It seems like they can’t get all 3 units to play well at once.

  43. i know special teams screwed up today but Schotthemier has to go…his play calling is horrible and we can all see what play is coming next 95% of the time…..Rex needs to take the offense as passionately as his defense and then I will consider us a contender….Douchingheimer must GO!

  44. Schotthemier is doing a great job. The jets offense was NOT the problem today. And did you see the sanchez bootleg? no one saw that coming and the defense was looking under the pile for the ball 10 seconds after the play was over. The Jets also have the best rush offense in FOOTBALL! So shotty is the guy for the job and he should keep his.

  45. Richie,

Did you see the 8… 3 and outs when we could of put the dolphins away… Schottheimer is too predictable and its obvious the offense and sanchez have no faith in each other…

  46. Richie,

Did you see the 8… 3 and outs we had today? we could of put the dolphins away all 1st half….run run maybe pass doesnt get it done… Schottheimer is too predictable and its obvious the offense and sanchez have no faith in each other…

  47. jets burn list.

    1) Special Teams-whos on our kickoff team, Danny Woodhead and Ryan Fowler, really!!!!! Larry Izzo special teams god allowed ted ginn to run right through him, vernon gholstons only on kickoff because he makes so much money, hes teriible.
    2) Kerry Rhodes- make a play, something kerry, he was quick to jump in joey porters face but he plays scarred. Wasnt he supposed to be Rex’s Ed Reed in his system, ummm not quit.
    3) Shotty- his playcalling is terrible, he’ll have trouble finding a job when we let him go.
    4) Rex Ryan- if you take the extra points both times you can tie the game with a field goal at the end, just stupid
    5) Mark Sanchez- forgot how to throw a football in the first half.

  48. red – it has nothing to do with sanchez being scared and playing it safe or maybe that miami had things covered pretty well. Geez – I guess if a child commits murder its the parents fault.

  49. PEOPLE LISTEN TO YOURSELVES!!!!!!! JESUS CHRIST ITS JUST A GAME!!!!!!!!!!GOING INTO THE SEASON WITH A ROOKIE HC AND QB DID YOU EXPECT PLAYOFFS? AND IF WE DID ITS NOT LIKE WE WERE GONNA WIN THE SUPERBOWL!!!!WEATHER ANYONE ADMITS IT OR NOT THIS WAS A BUILDING YEAR…….NEEDLESS TO SAY IM STILL DISCUSTED BUT ONLY AT OUR KICKOFF COVER TEAM AND SORRY EXCUSE FOR A PUNTER WOW HE BLOWS I COULD PUNT BETTER THEN HIM AND HE CANT EVEN TAKE THE SNAP WE GOT FREAKIN CLEMENS HOLDING FOR FG’S LOL

  50. Hey Guys,
It was nice meeting our writers at 13 A today. I wish we could have left the game with a better feeling, but still good to meet everyone.

  51. richie,

seriously get a clue…miami had 2 thats two it case 2 ROOKIE corner backs to cover croctery and edwards…way to take advantage richie rich! obiviously you never coached or played football…

  52. Red – Sanchez is the QB not Schotty -

  53. Does anyone know why the New York Jets hate their loyal fans so much (Especially the ones that have been rooting for them for 30+ years)?

Come on guys this constant sucking has grown very tiresome, and I do not know how much more us old time hard core fans can take!

My “I bleed green” is starting to trickle very thin!

Brand new team same old Jets!

  54. Wow. I go to my first game in like ten years, and it’s deja vu all over again. Ugh.

Is it too early to start a “FIRE SCHOTTY” campaign? I mean the play calling was atrocious. I never thought I could miss Paul “Draw Play” Hackett.

Jack, I don’t know what game you were watching, but we’re twelve yards away from a win (with even the possibility of a first down), and our running game is one of the strongest in the league, and they THROW?!? Yeah, Let’s put the game in the hands of the rookie, that makes PERFECT sense. Only in Bizarro-JET land. (and let’s not even talk about the stupid stupid stupid 2 point tries. I mean, is Herman Edwards back?)

Sheeesh. For me, it’s been 35 years of this kind of crap. Enough already.

  55. What the hell is Rex Ryan going for two when we still have15+ minutes to go.If we had taken the extra point when we had the chance we might be talking about a jet win

  56. Gain Green
You make a valid point with the team having a Rookie Coach and QB and our SB expectations. However this team has been built to make the playoffs for the last few years. The missed opportunity last season to make the playoffs and win the division on-top of the sudden downward spiral is very disappointing! Not to mention disheartening for the long-time fans. I for one have been rooting for them for the past 34 years and all I have been asking for is a division championship the last few years. That is not too much to ask for but this team keeps on crapping on us!!!

  57. I agree that we shouldn’t have gone for the first two-point conversion but it evened out because of Miami going for one. If we kicked the PAT they would’ve kicked the PAT on theirs. The second one was right to go for and we had it except for the stupid penalty. Take away the penalty, we get the two and then kick a FG at the end and maybe we’re going to OT.

But the bottom line was the kickoff returns. Giving up two is just inexcusable. The tackling on the second one was atrocious.

I was happy with both the offense and the defense. It took a while for the O to get going, but they played well in the second half and Sanchez looked pretty good. The defense played great overall.

This is a team that can’t afford to make mistakes and they made three huge ones. It should’ve been an easy win.

  58. Close NO Cigar- AGAIN! Still on the band wagon-but have to question Coaches why special team demons Marquise Murrel & Ahmad Caroll were INACTIVE & Vernon (On it’s ok, u can make the tackle, I’ll watch) Gholston WAS active. WHY ISN’T this supposed 4.5 40 guy a terror on Special teams??? Mike Westoff, not one of your better weeks. Well the Jets shoulda, woulda, coulda been 7-1, 6-2 or at least 5-3. Now they have to go like 6-2 down the stretch to be a wild card. 6 days off to re-charge the batteries will hopefully do wonders. Ya Think?

  59. I really t hink the Jets were the better team today. Though that does not matter in the win-loss column, considering we have a rookie qb and coach, multiple injuries and suspensions, and a new defensive system, I think the future is looking good

  60. >>Jack, I don’t know what game you were watching, but we’re twelve yards away from a win (with even the possibility of a first down), and our running game is one of the strongest in the league, and they THROW?!?

And the circle of Jets fans becomes complete.

I get told the reason the Jets didn’t win was because they didn’t pass enough and then I get told the reason they didn’t win was because they didn’t run enough.

    Ok,

Oh wait. Here’s a thought. They didn’t win because they gave up 14 points on special teams which it was ok we gutted to get Edwards cause its just special teams and because we gave up yet another touchdown on offense.

Go ahead, type many capital letters to describe how that’s not why we lost.

  61. Oh by the way …. Justin Miller still SUCKS!!!

  62. This is far from a tragedy.

Just when you were wondering whether the Offense or the Defense would give away another game — the special teams (usually one of our strongest assets) gets into the act. Life as a Jet fan, folks.

  63. none of u guys seem to want to admit all the problems. im a die hard jets fan, have been since i was like 5. the problems lie… everywhere…

    1) mark sanchez– hes a rookie, hes going to have down games. the fact that hes a rookie and is doing what hes doing is phenominal, but the fact that hes our starter and we all want to win the superbowl this year is just unrealistic. i know roethlessberger did it, but sanchez is not roethlessberger, hes eli manning essentially. and it only took eli like 3 years to actually remember how to play football.
    2) our offensive line– do these people have mental lapses or something? sanchez got blind sided atleast 3x today and on what was probably the most important play of the game they let a runner come up right down the middle. they must have had mustard on their hands or something to have 2 guys guarding 1 and still let him go up the middle as easily as they did.
3)marty schottenheimer– terrible play calling. some of you wont admit it, some of you are just blindly saying hes a good offensive coordinator because of the production the jets offense gets. the offense scores points because the players are talented! not because hes some offensive wiz. he didnt want sanchez to throw too many picks today, so i guess he is justified in playing conservative… WRONG. We all want to go to the playoffs, sacrificing points for security on teh account of one player is completely wrong. if you want to go the playoffs then you set your players loose, you dont bottle them up. i dont remember ben rothlessberger having as many restrictions on his superbowl championship year under cowher. despite the first half conservative play calling by schottenheimer he also made mistakes when the game was critical. both 2 pt conversions he should have spread the defense — 5 wr’s and then instead of lobbing a throw to the corner, how about running a draw play with shon greene? would have worked like a charm both times. or maybe instead of having sanchez throw on the miami 7 on the final drive a draw play would have gotten atleast 5 yards to get it to 4th and inches. schottenheimer is the guy who throws hail mary’s on 3rd and 1! Thats not how you ahve a successful offense…
4)rex ryan — so far, hes been great. vocal, probably is able to motivate the team well, has great defensive blitzes but sometimes something goes amiss. first game against miami it was the wrong play calling and underpreparing his team. and what has been a major thing this year… MISSED TACKLES: teach your players how to tackle man. you have the man power, use it like its supposed to be used!
    5) team leaders– we have none. some one needs to become a leader. when the times get hard this team falls relly fast.

there are more but i dont feel like writing them all out. im disgusted by this loss because this was probably our whole season.

  64. Must win game and we lose it. UNREAL!!!

  65. Something I thought I would never write, Justin Miller looked slow.

And Danny Woodhead should not be covering kicks, appeared he had contain on both returns. Duh??

Did not read all the comments, and in truth Andrew perfectly explains the game, but what is REALLY scary is they kept kicking deep to Ginn even after TWO Td’s. Talk about arrogance.

God knows how many more they might have returned if not for Feely (although his bad kick and bad coverage contributed to the first return, he was too amped).

But bad coaching lost this game.

As for the litmus test for the run offense and defense, the defense proved they can survive without Jenks, great news for the future, Pouha looked like a player.

Not so good the offensive line, they were finally getting some push going when Schotty inexplicably pulled the plug on the running game, but nowhere near the dominant performance of the last two weeks which was obviously an illusion.

Faneca might be done, believe FO had him graded poorly last season and he was destroyed today both on running and passing plays.

That’s it, just playing out the string now hoping to see improvement from the young players (and the coaches), at times Sanchez looked absolutely horrible but he did rebound late.

  66. I cant emphasize this enough…The Jets always seem to play down to their competition and very seldon play better than them…I dont care who there playing…They play well enough to get u excited about a victory and find ways to lose it in the end…Games like the Oakland demolishing are very few and far between…Someone in this Jets coaching staff needs to flip the KILL SWITCH in these players so they play solid for 60 minutes…Almost every week I hear damn if the offense only played better or shoot if the defense just could stop the pass or run…Now this week it’ll be damn if our special teams only played better we would have won…Would of,Could of,Should of…We DIDN’T and thats what it all boils down to…Once again the Jets are a few years away from making any type of real noise in the AFC or in the NFL…JETS FAN FOR LIFE….

  67. One more thing, I was certainly considering kicking the FG on 4th and 14 from the 16, then going for an onside kick. See it done before in that situation.

Not sure of the percentages but I think I might have gone this route. The way Feely was throwing his body around he might have recovered the kick himself.

    Anyone?

  68. This team looked like world beaters in the first 3 weeks now they look very average dont know what happened

  69. the jets are the mets dolfhins are the marlins ne phillies there is something about florida and our mets jets always find a way to destroy our seasons

  70. Here is the problem. The Jets do not have a killer instinct. They need to attack the other team’s defense. They don’t score enough points. That is how you lose twice to the Dolphins and lose to the Bills. This is a collapse like last year due to a poor offensive coach. Looks like a busy offseason in search of a new play caller.

  71. I know it hurts – because i been on the other side. But let’s stop the JETS are better than the FINS COMMENTS UNTIL NEXT YEAR. You prove it on the field not in the NYTs.

    2-0 = It’s over for this year.

Ryan, Scott, Calvin Pace – Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

You see when you open your mouth and talk nonsense – well it makes it that much more of a bitter defeat.

  72. >>Something I thought I would never write, Justin Miller looked slow.

I have no idea why. Why exactly do you think the Jets cut him the first time and the only team to pick him up, and then cut him, was the Raiders? Oh yeah. He’s slow.

    >>And Danny Woodhead should not be covering kicks, appeared he had contain on both returns. Duh??

    Not The Danny?!?

Oh yeah, forgot, Nobody else wants he either.

But bad coaching lost this game.

Absolutely. I was sure Westoff was going to beat somebody down with his cane. Bastich,

    >>Not so good the offensive line, they were finally getting some push going when Schotty inexplicably pulled the plug on the running game, but nowhere near the dominant performance of the last two weeks which was obviously an illusion.

Incisive, The offensive line was dominating on the run until they inexplicably had to start throwing because they were behind. Damn, that is a mystery.

Hell, the only good news WOJF, this was your last game and you will never have to live with that again. Actually, I hope a better Jets fan gets your seats.

  73. Why are some thinking playoffs when we can’t beat the stinkin’ Bills and Fins? They suck. We suck more/

  74. I think the Bye is right on time for the Jets. They need to take a breather and find out what they have to do to straighten out. It seems that every week there is a break down in certain areas. Either penalties or Sanchez rookie mistakes, and even some poor clock management. Even this outstanding defense had a hiccup game. So maybe Rex is having his Rookie mistakes too. But I believe that this break will be a good time for the team to get the creases out. This is a good team with good players. The coaches need to fix this in the war room and out on the practice field. Good smart practices should lead to more wins. Because there seems to be more mistakes due to some sort of distractions. Rex needs to lead and focus the coaching staff and the players.

  75. Can we forget talk of the Playoffs? Let’s take it one game at a time. Looking at the schedule, it looks like an 8-8 or 9-7 year. So, what do we have to look forward this year:

    1) Development of Defense – This defense will be great, we have seen games where they shut the other team down. This game was an example of how they recovered after a bad game (last dolphins game in miami).

    2) QB – Sanchez will only get better. Today in the second half he played really well once they allowed him to pass. I think, for the sake of development they need to take the foot of the breakes. Are we really gonna make noise in the playoffs? I don’t think so. SO why not give him some opportunities by opening up the passing game. We need him to develop and that wont happen if we restrict him to 15 passes a game.

    3) Scheme – Are we a 3-4 or 4-3? Can we evolve to a passing O or will be a running team? These are questions that can be answered based on what they see this year.

So please, lets not talk about playoffs..if they get to 8-5 with three games left then we can discuss it but please, after today, I, as a jets fan, cannot put lofty expectations on them. Its clear that the team and coaches need to dial the expectations down. When you only beat the elite teams and lose to scrubby teams…that is a sign of bad gameplanning. They need to mature together..team and coaches.

I say optimistically 9-7 and this game and the bills game are what keep us out of the playoffs. BUT watch out next year, Sanchez will be better and so will the defense.

    LL

  76. I THINK REX NEEDS TO TONE HIS AGRESSIVENESS A BIT. WHY HE DIDN’T KICK THE EXRA POINTS I DONT KNOW. AND I DNT WAT TO KNOW. TE JETS NED SOMEONE LIKE TOM LAUNDRY. ALWAYS KOOL AND IN CONTROL. REX IS OUT OF CONTROL. LAST YR WE HAD A QB OUT OF CONTROL NOW WE HAVE A COACH THAT IS OUT OF CONTROL. AND AGAIN, WE ARE AT THE 12 AND INSTEAD OF RUNNING FOUT TIMES WE THROW!!!! RUN THE BALL!!!! WE RAN A DRAW FOR A FIRST DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME ON A 3RD DOWN. WE RAN THE BALL WELL TODAY. MRE DRAW REX OR SCHOTTY!!!!!

WE ARE DONE!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

  77. PLAYOFFS, PLAYOFFS!! WE CAN T DO DIDLY POOH ON OFENSE!!!

I CANT SE US WINNING 6 OUT OF EIGHT GAMES.

  78. YOU CANNOT PLAY BETTER ON PAPER AND LOSE ON TEH SCORE. THATS A COACHING ERROR TODAY. THE AVERAGE POINT LOSS FOR US IS 7 POINTS.

  79. Hate the Fins and hate to say it, but they’ll finish the year ahead of the Jets. Why? Because they want it more. On MNF Miami had 4th & goal and a few seconds left on the clock and made our D look stupid. In today’s game the Jets had 1st down with 2+ minutes on the 12 yard line and looked lost. With one of the best O-lines in the NFL and a QB who missed numerous receivers, the Jets flopped big time! Schott should have challenged the O-line to man up and ran the ball.

40 years (minus a few games) of lame play calling and the inability to pull a game out when it’s all on the line. Good teams find ways to win and capitalize on every break. Bad teams and also-rans never rise to the occasion. I’ll be watching my tape of the Jet-Miami MNF classic instead of this crummy game. Maybe the team should watch it too!

  80. Really this isn’t hard. We have a very good Defense, and an offense with lots of potential, and has played very well at times. What we don’t have is a team that can play well in all three phases of the game at the same time. Result: 4-4.

  81. Although I am really sick that we didnt win this game in the fourth quarter I sit back and think also how many great or even good team after losing players like Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington would even be able to keep themselves in games like the Jets have the past few weeks…These loses are heart breakers but we also have to remember this team is not at full strength and wont be for the remainder of the season…As others have written we need to focus on developing our young players and having better continuity throughout all 60 minutes of football…I’m not a really big Schotty fan either but you cant blame him for the execution of plays that falls on the players…Yes pass happy second half had me questioning ,”what the heck are u thinking Schott” but the only way to build confidence in your young quarter back is to let him throw the ball…How will Sanchez develope into the quarter back we all want if he hands the ball off 50 times a game…Yes running for 300 plus two games in a row is excellent but how much running are you going to be able to do late in the fourth quarter of games when time is a factor and you need to get out of bounds..Sanchez is on the rookie roller coaster ride and we all need to except that as fans…Like most of us stated at the beginning of the year 8-8 – 10-6 would be a respectable season for the Jets this year…Early succes has made us all over look the fact that we do have a rookie QB and HC..This Jet team is heading in the right directions its just not going to happen as fast as we would all like it too…Keep the faith fellow Jet fans the future is bright but its going to get UGLY before it gets BETTER…JETS FAN FOR LIFE……

  82. One more comment, i am glad to see the class that Ryan is brining in – here is quote from your GREAT LB today. WHAT a sore loser – learn to shut up! I guess he couldn’t put Henne away with his 1 powerful sack.

“They’re a great team,” Scott said of Miami. “They’ll probably contend for the Super Bowl. They have a tremendous offense — great running backs, a great quarterback, a great tight end. They are stacked across the board. I’m serious. They are great.”

    And later he continued.

“They have a tremendous offense and they showed it today. They are Super Bowl contenders and they will probably take it all the way.”

  83. Jets don’t look average. they look horrible.

1-4 since that impressive start. the only thing that changed has been the competition which has gotten much stiffer.

  84. Lose the Caps Jose

  85. Look, you guys have a first year QB and a first year head coach, did you really think you were going to bring home a big silver trophy the very first year? Relax, it’s growing pains, Sanchez will round out well when he has more experience (unless he gets hit like he did today), Rex will learn to take the audio down a notch and the coaching up a notch, it’ll all pan out although probably not until next year. You have a great O line and a running game second to none, your defense is solid, you’ll rack up at 8-8 for the year and next year should be better. Enjoy your team and climb down off the bridge

  86. Bent I didn’t know you were at the game! Bah that makes the loss even worse, if I’d known you made the trip I would have bought you a beer.

  87. the fins wont end up in front of us because they cant play us 6 more times. They seem to be built to beat the AFC. there 3 and 0 and we are 1 and 4 in our own division. or something like that.

Our was hired because he has experience not because he doesnt. Cone on. He’s been around. To not go to OT on that game is ridiculous. To gun ho Mr. Ryan. Take some of your cojones and give them to Schotty. Maybe he’ll run more draws.

  88. Right now the only team that deserves the wild card would be the ravens.

  89. What’s with the 9 offensive linemen formation that schotty fell in love with today?

And the playfakes with only 1 receiver running a pattern?

The offense looked terrible for the first half. Too run-happy against a team that should have been exploited through the air. Then, when we HAD to throw (down by 2 scores late), we did it well, but got too pass-happy.

    Schotty must go.

  90. LOSING ON SPECIAL TEAM LIKE THIS IS JUST AS BAD AS LOSING ON INTERCEPTIONS.

  91. Hopefully next year Mark will call more audibles!! See you next year.

  92. First things first, I like Sanchez.I know after the saints game, the bills game and even the first half of this game, people are going to point the finger at sanchez.

i will admit at halftime today i was concerned…when is this kid going to show me something.

i think that second half was the turning point for sanchez. i think he is it, i think he is going to only get better and he will get it going.

Now my rant and dont take offense its hard for me to say this but its how i feel and i need to get this off my chest.

would someone tell this team to just shut up and play football?

my big concern and this is a BIG concern is that I have little if any faith in this coaching staff. Dont get me wrong I like Rex, I think he brings the fire and the “swagger” to this team, but the fact of the matter is that doesnt win you games. actually i think if anything he talks trash to distract from the matter at hand…he isnt head coach material and he surrounds himself with people who arent getting the job done (schitty).
how many more bad losses can we take?
im tired of the New York Jets getting beat by the New York Jets. to me thats is the difference between a team that’s “got it” and a team that will never get it.

You can say play calling, rookie qb, injuries, whatever you want. Make excuses if you want…but you cant make anymore excuses for this team this year.
This game was the season…The players knew it, and hopefully the coaches knew it. To lose the game the way we did just proves to me that this team is delusional. get back to basics. Learn to tackle, learn to not jump offsides in crucial moments of the game. Learn to kick an extra point when its the third qtr. Learn to run the ball on 2nd and 6 from the 9 yard line when you have the number 1 rushing offense in the league. Learn to put up or shut up.

so please jets do me a favor…get back to basic and shut up…for now

  93. The screen pass to TJ was awsome… Why not run that more?? That was my beefwith the playcalling…. When u find something that works, use it often!!!! Idiots!!!!

  94. You saw a lot of good things from the offense and especially the defense today, but this is a classic example of a good team that doesnt know how to win. Its a mentality they dont have yet, if you take this teams talent and put it in a winning environment like the Colts this exact team could go 12-4. In order for them to start winning and figuring out how to win they need some breaks to go their way instead there the ones giving up the breaks to the other team. We all see this team has talent, but if you cant consistently win games your supposed to win against teams your much better than, than the talent doesnt mean as much. Im kind of happy for a bye this week, my heart and blood pressure could use a rest. This team plays with your emotions every week, and if your as into these games as I am you feel queasy when they lose and great after they win. I could use the break

  95. WHATS THE SENSE IN RUNNING THE BALL WELL AND NOT CALING A SCREEN A COUPLE OF PLAYS LATER OR A DRAW!!! SCHOTTY NEEDS TO RUN PLAYS TO WIN. NOT TO KEEP REX OR SANCHEZ HAPPY.. 2ND AND 9 STAY UGLY AND JUST WIN. RUN RUN AND RUN AGAIN!!

  96. WE THREW THE BAL 40 TIMES AND RAN IT 35. TOO MANY PASSES FOR SANCHEZ.

  97. Does this mean that we can get rid of those hideous uniforms now??

  98. I honestly believe we can beat any team in this league. The Jets problem is getting all 3 phases to show up on the sameday. The Jets are CLEARLY better than the Dolphins and the Bill. Could of, Should of…….We definetly have a chance for the division ( the Patriots beat the Titans and the Bucs for god sake). NOTthat good. We will get better, and it starts with the Jags. Remember we were 8-3 last year and did not make the playoffs. Lets finish strong and get into the post season with a head of steam. Stay positive because they are playing well. We have lost 2 amazing players for the year and still out played the dolphins. Imagine the dolphins with out Ricky Williams and Joey Porter.

  99. Again, no throws to David Clowney. Use ALL your weapons. Make the other team guess a litlle. One screen pass to TJ that actually worked.

All my years as a fan, I cannot figure out why the NYJ cannot figure out the formula to putting together a winning team. I remember when the Pats, Colts were the laughing stocks of the league, but they’ve figured it out. (Manning & Brady)

No matter what the Jets try it just all turns to dirt.

  100. The Jets outplayed the Dolphins on offense and defense but lost it on special teams. The effort came up just short again. The defense lost it last time. And Mark Sanchez lost two other games. They need to play a complete game every time. They’re just not good enough to win it on defense or offense alone like some of the elite teams. All teams will give up a few bad plays every game but the good ones can come back and win. Much has been made of the fact that they lost the winnable games the past four weeks. But they played three division games during those times. They’re always tougher. I also believe that the Dolphins and the Bills probably hate the Jets more than the Jets hate them. They probably had just a little more motivation despite Rex Ryan’s new attitude. He’s still new to the rivalries.

  101. I blame Tanny and Woody…After Groh, Edwards, and Mangini they should have NEVER hired another rookie head coach!!!! I personally wanted Jon Gruden..He’s younger than Rex and already has a Superbowl…Shanahan was next on my list followed by Cowher …This was NEVER gonna happen because: 1. Tanny didn’t want to give up power 2. Woody cheaped out 3. They wanted a defensive-minded head coach so their boy Schotty could run the offense…Remember, Tanny desperately wanted Schotty as his head coach…Tanny had Schotty ahead of Rex on his list of candidates but feared negative media and fan reaction…

  102. Rex Ryan is a great defensive coordinator but a horrible head coach (just like his father)…First move he better make is replace Schotty with Callahan…But he won’t do that in a million years…

  103. The hallmark of Jet football for the past 30 years is underachieving. We found a good way of doing that today. The Fish are right. We should stop talking & just start playing complete football.

It’ll be another 7-9 to 9-7 year for the Jets which is actually a good record considreing NYJ history for the past 20 years. About half of the last 20 years, we have managed to win 6 games or less.

    Woo-hoo!

  104. I dont see how anyone can blam Schotty for today’s loss btw? WTF did he do wrong? One bad playcall? He called a good game overall. Special tems lost this one for us. Simple.

  105. Why are people getting on Justin Miller?? He averaged almost exactly what Leon averaged this season..It was his first game with the Jets, give him a break…I said before the game that as long as he didn’t turn the ball over I’d take it…Give him at least another game..Of course he’s gonna look slow his first game back..Just look how Calvin Pace played his first game back…

  106. If anyone needs me I’ll be sitting on the roof…

  107. WW85, are you kidding me?? ONE bad play call, yeah right!!!! The guy is in over his head…Enough already!!! I’ll take Hackett any day over this hack!!!! Rex should give Callahan the play-calling!!!! But he won’t ever do that and risk a call from Marty…

  108. Jetski, How did Schotty cost the game today? He should have called a eun on 3rd down. What else today? He called a good game. They scored a ton in the 2nd half. We lsot becuase of back to bak KOR for TDs? Tell me what team in the NFL can recover from that?

Nobody can blame Schotty for today’s loss.

  109. Sorry for the mistypes. I’m drunk & pissed as much as we all are.

  110. Let’s be honest and admit that Rex doesn’t look like he’ll ever be a good NFL head coach…I felt the same way with Herm and Pete Carroll…At least with Mangini there seemed to be some potential…Groh looked the most capable…Rex is best suited as a coordinator or college coach…It’s so obvious in everything from his demeanor to his game-day coaching….That’s why the Jets should have NEVER taken another risk with a rookie head coach..Now we’re stuck with him for at least another season…To be fair, I’d love to see him with a decent offensive coordinator like Callahan…I really think Schotty is so bad that he could be the reason Rex looks like such a fool…That said, Schotty isn’t the reason Rex opens his big mouth at every press conference and ends up looking like a fool…Come on, if he wasn’t coaching the Jets everone on this board would hate the guy (and rightfully so)..

  111. WW85, here are some excerpts from Bassett’s and Bent’s Liveblog:

1:30: Schottenheimer is calling plays one play too late. SHould have end-arounded one play earlier, when team wasn’t keying on it. He had Cotchery perfect on the previous play, which I think is why he did the next play he did.

1:45 – The Jets end the drive and score a FG, but there was some questionable playcalling on second down. Now the Jets are going to give the Dolphins their best field position of the game … will they be more risky on offense now?

  112. with all that happened on specials and greens fumble i think it was shottys play calling that killed us in the end…

it was i believe the 1st quarter and we had a 1st and goal…TJ runs for 5 yards and now we have a 2nd and goal at the 5 yard line…what happens next killed me…shotty calls not 1 but 2 pass plays…WHY…FOR GODSAKE WHY…when we could have run it in…

at the end of the game 1st and goal with an opportunity to get a 1st down at the 2 yard line…handoff to TJ for 4 yards…then shotty puts the game into the rookies hands again…WHY…ALL WE NEEDED WAS 6YARDS TO GET A 1ST…then the sack…even though faneca is getting paid all that money the blame is not his…3rd down we have to throw so we can get a 1st and we all knowthat didn’t happen…last chance and the rookie runs back 20 yards for no reason and throws the ball out of bounds…NOT SANCHEZS FAULT…THE FAULT IS ALL SHOTTYS…plain and simple…the game was at hand and he did what he always does…CALLS THE WRONG PLAYS AND ALWAYS PUTS THE GAME IN THE WRONG HANDS…so much for not asking the rookie to do to MUCH…i HATE this guy with a passion…just my thoughts…

  113. dakar, I agree with you 100%…Too bad Rex is too scared to replace Schotty with Callahan….

  114. i love how some of you people are acting like the jets shouldnt of hired Rex Ryan from the beginning. The day he was signed and had his first interview nearly ALL of us were giddy of the way he talked and were so excited for his personality to take over the team, than when the teams loses a game you guys say “we never should have hired a rookie coach” give me a break! Classic bandwagon jets fans, when they win your bleed green and white, when they lose you come on here and act like you knew everything was going to happen and offer assanine ways to fix things. The guy has coached 8 FOOTBALL GAMES! Hes not the one that missed tackles on special teams or fumbled the ball, yes schottys play calling has you scratching your head sometimes, but if the kick returns and the fumble never happened (he has no control over that) and he called the same plays he did today and the jets won he would of called a great game

  115. The jets should cut Shonn Greene. They should bring in someone like Caulcrick who has the playing style north to south. Thomas Jones is all by himself right now. He needs some help. The runningbacks need to be physical.

  116. dear gain greene… i dont know if you’ve been watching these games but were not just losing were losing in the dumbest fuc*kin ways, L at NO’s- we shut that high power offense down and shotty puts the game in the hands of the rook and he hands the saints the W, 2L’s at Miami end of game 5 min drive to win the TED GIN RUNS BACK TWO KICKOFFS FOR TOUCHDOWS!!! are you kidding me L to Buffalo game shotty dials up 5 first down pass plays all are picked off on a day that we rush for over 300 yards thats just bush league!! these are all things we see as fans but the coaches are blind to it, and rebuilding mode are you guys fuc*in retarted or something we have 10 former probowlers on this team and pick up braylon edwards midseason and we want to rebuild are you kidding ??

  117. Jetski,
I think you are totally jumping the gun on calling Rex a “horrible” head coach. You saw potential in Mangini. The guy had three years here and mailed in a 4-12 season by allowing his team to go into the year with no o-line and led a legendary late-season collapse.

If the Jets get through this rough stretch and finish strong you guys are singing a totally different tune. Plus no one was calling him a horrible head coach when he beat the Texans, Pats and Titans, all teams we were supposed to lose to when the schedule came out.

There are two things that you CAN definitively say about Rex

1-He has taken a “soft” defensive unit and turned them into one the best in the league. The only terrible game they played, the next time they saw the team they gave up 100 yards of offense and sacked the QB six times.
2-He has to put more emphasis on the other aspects of the game, and hold the offense and special teams to higher standard. He takes things like KO’s, Conversions and timeouts for granted sometimes. He is “green” but has shown potential

Francecsa is killing him right now on Mike D up and its so obvious that it because he talked about Mike’s precious Bill Parcells led Dolphins and his dis-like for Rex’s father Buddy. The guy notoriously takes a personal stance against anyone who challenges anything Parcells is associated with.

8 games is not a big enough sample to make statements like that. Especially with a rookie QB ups and downs and injuries to Pro Bowl players. Look at what A-Rod just did, the guy was called the biggest choke artist and has the Yankees one game away from the W.S. It turned out he just needed a few more chances…

  118. “The jets should cut Shonn Greene” lol Fonzie did you actually just type that? this is exactly what im talking about with some of you guys on here hahah

  119. Fonzie- Cut Shonn Greene to pick up Jehuu Caulrick bc he runs north to south.OK,I swear to God I cant take this anymore… Hey I guess with Hank as your father you never had anyone teach you about football other than to hate anything that the majority of Jet fans try and get behind. We are cursed and have horrific karma bc total idiots root for this team…Thats it I retire from this blog I’ve had enough, these two have ruined too many Sundays for me. They dont know how to do anything but pick the Jets to ultimately fail and tell the world how smart they are every chance they get…

  120. jetski…

i disagree…i dont think rex is scare to replace him…whatever is gonna happen will happen at the end of the season…rex and mike t. will give the job to some1else next year…perhaps callehan…god willing…

    ryan…

if you read my post you would see i didn’t say a dam thing about sexy rexy…i love the guy…again…if you read my post you would understand i HATE shotty…i haven’t liked him at all with his retarded play calling…and i like most jets fans have been wanting for callehan to take over the OC…or the other guy who’s name escapes my mind right now…just my thoughts…

  121. dakar, wasnt directed at you, but to some of the posts above you

  122. ryan…

    i reqalized that after i read a few of them…sorry dude…

  123. realized

  124. Three straight loses against the Dolphins. And that fat windbag of a coah is still talking? Division goes through Miami!

  125. Ryan, I don’t know about everyone else but I NEVER wanted Rex Ryan or any other rookie head coach after Groh, Herm, and Mangini…I wanted Jon Gruden..My next choice was Shanahan and then Cowher…

  126. I get how tough this loss it to swallow, it made me as physically ill as any in the 40 years I’ve been a fan, but the overreaction on this blog regarding the coaching is at hysterical levels. Even for Jets fans.

The best, most experienced coach on the staff lost the game for the Jets today. Westhoff’s credentials are unassailable, yet he blew one big time today. It happens.

Ryan had the team well prepared, learned from his mistakes in the previous Miami game and his adjustments worked spectacularly. Schottenheimer’s unit almost overcame two KR for TDs and the fumble for TD of a rookie running back. The fact that he couldn’t magically will two more years of experience into a 22 year old rookie QB with 16 college starts, so that he could better execute a successful final 2 minute drive against a very good defense is a fireable offense? Could the play selection on that drive be questioned? For the next thousand years, like any combination of plays they ran that resulted in a loss would have been.

But if not for the 21 points given up by the fumble and KRs he’d be getting celebrated for his part in a big win. I’m generally not a big defender of Schotty and I’ve been critical of Rex’s rookie mistakes but it’s just not that applicable today.

All I know is that if someone had told me right after the first Miami game that we would destroy the Wildcat and hold the Fish to 52 yards on the ground and 112 in the air in the rematch – after losing Kris Jenkins for the season – I would have said that person was inanely optimistic.

After watching today I came out thinking that the coaching and depth on this team is actually better than I thought.

  127. Eddie DiGio, please don’t compare Rex Ryan to A-rod..A-rod is already a great player…He’s been a lock for the Hall of Fame for years now…Rex Ryan hasn’t proved to even be a decent head coach…A comparison between A-rod and Peyton Manning makes better sense….

  128. Subwayfare, even with the awful special teams the Jets still had a great chance to win and Schotty blew it!!!!

  129. I don’t really see it as Schotty blowing the game. Sanchez left plays out on the field, with what was called. That’s to be expected. He’s actually way ahead of where I expected him to be at this point and Schotty has to be given some begrudging credit for that. And I loved that he put Shonne Greene right back out on the field after the fumble. That’s the way to encourage a RB who will be doing big things for this team, mark my words.

  130. subwayfare, I hate when people say if not for this or that we would have won because the game would be totally different..How are you so sure that Miami’s offense would not have still scored…The bottom line is that before all these kick returns for touchdowns it was a close game, 3-3 at halftime…Feely had to make a 55 yard field goal to make it 6-3….So the outcome wouldn’t be so certain because everything changes!!!!

  131. Im not comparing the greatness of A Rod as a player to the greatness of Rex Ryan as a coach. All I was saying is that people said “he’ll never be a clutch player” “the Yankess will never win a world series with him” much like you said he has shown “no potential”. A Rod gave less indication that he could ever get it done.

The only thing I was saying is that its way too early to tell. Never say never. The season is only half way done and the Jets have a legitimate shot in every game the rest of the way. You have the give the guy at least as long as Mangini before you make definitve statements like that. The fact is the jury is still out… But its nice to see you completely missed my point and sound like Hank

  132. Remember when almost everyone on this board was saying that Favre was done…I guess he got the last laugh!!!!

  133. Eddie DiGio, I never understood the A-rod can’t get it done in the play-offs theory when he had produced for Seattle in the play-offs..Loser Yankees fans just wanted someone to blame…They unfairly trashed the guy but now he’s their new Mr. November!!! Jeter who??

  134. Rex shouldn’t be judged so harshly. This is his first head coaching job. I’m confident that he can and will bring respect to the Jets.

  135. Jetski
I know I know, they blamed everything on him and guys never hit in front of him to set up him in RBI situations but he is gettting the last laugh now

  136. The hype and the early success this season has lead to unrealistic expectations. Rex expects to win now and thats the state of mind that a head coach SHOULD have. However, we fans need to be more realistic.

  137. SHOTTY and his stupid decision making lost us the game…not the 3rd quarter meltdown…that didn’t help but when you put the game in the rookies hands this is what is gonna happen…he did in the 1st quarter and at the end of the game…no1 with common sense would do that…but shotty has no C.S.at all…all i keep hearing is they’re gonna tone it down for the rookie…but then we put the game in his hands to win the game with a more than capable RB to do the job…SHOTTY MUST GO…just my thoughts…

  138. goodnight guys…by the way…

    SHOTTY MUST GO…

  139. You’ve got to judge the whole game. We scored 3 points in the first half. And I blame schotty for that. You can’t let teams hang around, and that’s exactly what the jets did today.

    Schotty must go.

  140. Guys bottom line is if they tackle Ted Ginn ONCE on either of those returns and more than likely they win the game. Also, after the sack on Miami’s lone TD drive they had a 2nd and 17 and Henne got 15 of it back on 3rd down. They make a play there the Jets win too.

I think part of this is Rex making the transition to being a HC, but stop killing Schottenheimer for the playcalling. The call to be conservative comes from the head coach. Rex has been saying ALL WEEK they wanted to run the ball, and after the past two weeks, could we blame him? Also, Sanchez was off early in the game. Left a LOT of plays out there on the field in the first half.

I didn’t expect much from this season to begin with, and 3-0 got everyone’s expectations raised. Now the Jets have lost their most important defensive player and dynamic offensive player in back-to-back weeks. They SHOULD’VE won today, but they didn’t. They’re 4-4. Maybe down the stretch they’ll win some games they should lose and even things out, but the Jets are pretty much what I thought they would be.

  141. Greetings from the West Coast my Green & White brothers. Another killer LOSS, Special Teams now join O & D units for being awful and the reason we lost,

It disappoints me to read all the usual post-loss cliche posts of FIRE SCHOTTY, REX is not a good HC,, etc

why is it when we win, posts are not EXTEND SXHOTTYS contract, lock up Rex for 10 years?

Special Teams gave up 14 POINTS!!!! Where are the fire Westhoff cries?

If anybody truly believes schotty was the cause of this loss we did not watch the same game

  142. I think the team as a whole is a good team but for some reason every week only 2 of the three phases show up .

Once we start hitting on all cylinders this teams will be very dominent . But with a new coach new QB and a new defensive system ,this should be expected .

Next year they should be a bit more comfortable and look better more consistantly . Plus well have a few more faces ( hopefuly we still have some draft pics) .

  143. I hate football .

  144. Wait till next year. Usually that is my comment in December as we fall apart. It is obvious that this team has a lot of issues: play calling, execution, consistancy, silly penalties, clock management, kicking—-not all the problems come up every game but something always does. I think that in the end there is one man who is responsible and that is Rex Ryan. No he does not run the ball, pass or play D—but in the end he is responsible for what happens on the field—every aspect of it. He is the HC.

I hope he takes the next two weeks to see what he did wrong in this game and the Buffalo game—two games that on paper we should have won, two games that make this a dissapointing season.

  145. i’m tired of hearing were good and gonna be great …. your not good … good teams win …. bad teams find ways to lose games they should win …. and the same old jets have been doing it for 40 years.. as of now ..you won nothing .. you talk about wining multiple rings … how about winning the game at hand …..

enough talk ,enough bravado … enough excuses … rex is quikly becoming a loud fat buffoon ….. shut up and put out a well coached disiplined team on the field and win instead of running your fat puss all week in the paper , than going out and losing kotite and the same old jets style … finding new and history making ways of losing games ya should win….
work on a game plan .. work on clockmanagment ,work on your time out callin , work on your decsision making as a coach ….. cuz so far your coming off like a big talkin fat clown …

  146. The in-game coaching lost this one.

Our coaching staff is great at getting the team ready during the week. They have been awful, just eyeball-bleedingly awful at calling games, clock management and making adjustments.

We don’t go for two twice, we kick a field goal to tie with 1:00 left.

We kick away from Ginn or squib after he burned us once, we win.

That’s not on the players, who played well enough to win.

    Coaches own this loss.

  147. The Jets are all bark and no bite!!!!

  148. John M you are on point! That being said the Dolphins are a better team than the Jets and twice kicked Gang Green in the nutsack. The Division goes through Miami.

  149. If you want to keep living in denial by scapegoating the OC and HC then continue to do so – if you tell a lie loud & long enough it becomes a fact.

  150. Dolphins still need to win in New England next week to move into a 2nd place tie with the Jets.

  151. WE ARE THE BEST RUSHING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE . SO WHY DONT WE RUN AT LEAST 60% OF THE TIME?

  152. That wasn’t the issue, Jose. You don’t give up only 104 total yards on defense, hold the ball 10 minutes longer than the offense, and outgain the other team 127 – 52 on the ground and lose because of the playcalling. That is an issue of execution and making dumb mistakes.

  153. I saw a Favre post.

If Favre was taking hits like Sanchez has been taking he would be back on the farm cleaning poop from his chickens.

Sanchez takes some tough hits and gets right back up.

come on o-line protect this kid, at least in the red zone.

  154. Same ole’ JETS — Can the talking stop now?

Brendan – really that is what we are hoping for the Pats to beat the Fins so the JETS can stay in 2nd place? How about a big win?

The JETS 1 and 3 in the division… Impressive

  155. On the plus side, that’s a textbook game recap. Nice article.

On the flip side, I wish our team would show some grit for once. Though, to be fair, that was a clutch play from Scott, who I’d been ridiculing for not making many big plays.

  156. Tahts my point Brendan. If we were the number 1 rushing team we would run the ball on 1st and 10 from the 12 4 times. Especially sice we are in 4 down territory! Shove the ball down their throats I say!!!

  157. Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwin on Sirius likes to say “you are what your record says you are” and those words are definitiely the truth. We are a middle of the pack team that over acheived in weeks 1-3 and have underachieved since. Mediocre is what we are as a TEAM regardless of how good or bad our individual units are

Yesterday was an absolute kick in the nuts for Jets fans. Allowing Ted Ginn to beat us AGAIN was absolutely unforgivable. He reminds me of Willis McGahee when he was a Bill. Garbage against the rest of the league but an All-Pro against the Jets.

That said, we’re 4-4 going into the bye and still hold our destiny in our hands. Wins against the Pats, Bengals, Jags and Colts would go a long way to getting us back to the playoffs.

One last note, to all the guys w/man crushes on him I saw Danny Woodhead torched to the outside on both of those KRs for TDs.

  158. i am a new jets fans this year, i jumped on the bandwagon so i was not familiar with the team previously. Many of you had high expectations for this team coming in, some even thinking Super Bowl. I my opinion is that this team has several holes and but has a good foundation to become that Super Bowl team. With Rookie HC and QB the two most important positions in a franchise its not realistic to think that they were Super Bowl bound this year but i bet they’ll be contenders in years to come.

  159. Bent- You deserved better.

  160. Even before the 2 Ginn TDs, Feely made two solo tackles on kick-off returns (after his 1st FG, and at the start of the 2nd half). This alone should have alerted the Jets’ special teams that their coverage was lacking, and they should have made adjustments.

As for the 2-point attempts… Boomer Esiason says ‘don’t go for 2 unless you have to’. Others say don’t even think of going for 2 before the 4th quarter starts. Phil Simms during the game also commented that kicking the extra point would have brought the Jets to within 4 points, which would have translated to a 7-point deficit if the Jets D could then hold Miami to a FG (a good assumption given how well the Jets D played).

Oh well. I’m still hoping for 9-7, maybe even 10-6 if Indi rests their players wk 16 if they’ve clinched homefield by then.

  161. JETS SUCK

  162. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR BANDWAGON FANS HERE JACK TAKE A HIKE!

  163. We are not good, we have no potential. Dude we have overpaid veterans up and down this roster. How can anyone say that the future is bright? We have the cap maxed out and we are 4-4. Oh and we also have 3 draft picks next spring. The future is very, very bleak.

  164. I vote Jack stays and Dolfini leaves. At least Jack speaks with reason.

  165. I tell the truth and you can’t handle it. Tell me where I am wrong or do not use reason……….
