News: GM George Kokinis Fired in Cleveland
Feeling bad? It could be worse, we could be Browns fans. It looks like the General Manager that Mangini himself handpicked last February has already been fired in Cleveland.
George Kokinis was fired Monday as general manager and escorted from Browns headquarters, according to league sources. The Browns are not confirming the reports.
Kokinis has been on the hot seat for more than three weeks, the source said. The ax falls one day after Browns owner Randy Lerner said he plans on hiring a strong football personality to run the Browns. … Lerner has said Mangini’s job is safe for now.
A strong personality? That doesn’t sound like it bodes well for Eric Mangini in the long-term. What I can’t understand is whether this unsettles Mangini as the despot of Cleveland, or if in fact in some sick and demented way, it entrenches him even further. This was Mangini’s hire, so in my mind, I can’t imagine it helps.
Our thanks to David P. for the heads up …

I guess Hank’s prediction that Mangini will have the Browns atop the AFC North in 3 years aint gonna happen….just like Pennington would outplay Peyton Manning this year…just like Brett Favre is done…just like Vernon Gholston is going to be a great player…the guy just knows football
I hope they don’t fire Mangini yet because I think we can use Joshua Cribbs and Kamerion Wimbley.
Ronnie..LOL..
Am I the only one that would like to see less of this on theJETSblog? As nice as it is to know that he’s not our problem anymore, it’s just that: he’s not our problem anymore. I feel like I’m keeping tabs on my ex-GF while I have enough problems with my current one as is.
Hey EastSide-look at it like this-
If you think its bad now being a Jet fan, reading stuff like this can only make you feel better that even at 4-4, if that fat retard was still here we’d be the most boring and soft team in the league
The Browns traded away their offensive talent that kept them in games. They have no defense. Players don’t seem to be buying into Mangini’s plan, and while I think Mangini knows football, knows how a team needs to prepare to win, people need to follow for you to be a leader.
A change was made it appears to appease the fans, and as a fan I think that’s horrendous. The GM had half a year, and ONE draft to get things done.
It’s a shame things are going like this for Mangini. Say what you want about the guy, but he fostered the growth of the Jets core players. He helped rebuild our team.
I love reading about Mangini. it’s the only thing that makes me feel good these days.
Mangini was hand picked by Tannenbaum. So why is Tannenbaum still here?
Brian:
1) It is NOT known yet if Kokinis was fired or resigned. The team has NOT isued an official statement so EVERYTHING, as usual, is Media hogwash !!
2) It has been known that Lerner wanted Kokinis to interact closer with the media because of all the negative press even BEFORE Mangini/Kokinis were hired. Kokinis did not !!!
3)Kokins was hired AWAY from the Ravens Org. where he worked for 18 years, the last six as player personnel director.
4)Lerner is thinking of bringing in Ernie Accorsi as top football man for the brown to advise him. Accorsi recomended Mangini to Lerner to change the Browns culture !!!
For those of you that don’t know who Accorsi is, he was the Giants GM for ten years 1998 -2007. I guess he knows a little bit of football !!!
I am almost started to feel bad for Mangini, almost. I do feel bad for the Browns fans, they have been getting crapped on for a long long time and there is no end in sight.
AABrooklyn:
There is a losers culture in Cleveland. It is self perpetuating by the Media bashing EVERYTHING BROWNS followed by the fans drinking all the media koolaide
I have beeen reading several papers and sports “reporters” since right before Mangini/Kokinis were hired, and the bashing was FULL FORCE even then!!
It’s been that way since 1999. So the losers culture is self deserving !!!
NY Jets fans are the polar opposite of the Cleveland Browns fans, but yet they are the same !!.
Both give their team a bad name, one because it constantly drags the team down, the other because they think “swaggerlicious” can replace winning!!
Um, why is he fired. How many drafts has he had with the browns so far? What exactly would cause them to fire the GM?
There’s got to be more to this story. There’s something pretty weird about firing the GM in the middle of the season.
RAJ
Because Mike T. got us LW, Brick, Mangold, Sanchez, and Revis, Harris
Mike has given the Jets all the tools to be a championship team, look at all the talent we have. It’s just up to the Coach’s now.
nyckage, MT has done well in the player department (Revis, Jenkins, Mangold) but miserably in the coach department (Schottenhiemer, Sutton, Mangini). Multitasking is in the job description.
In four years, Terry Bradway got us a kick away from an AFC championship game with a DROY in Jonathan Vilma.
Sure, MT has acquired many stars through free agency and shrewd drafting but he has failed to secure us a single post season win during his own four year tenure.
so hank says there are 2 types of jets fans:
One that drags the team down, and one that “think “swaggerlicious” can replace winning”.
I guess you are the first type.
Since the jets haven’t exactly been winners, I guess “swaggerlicious” is better then being robotic losers.
um:
“NY Jets fans are the polar opposite of the Cleveland Browns fans, but yet they are the same !!. ”
Read my comment above again, then tell me, where does it say that there are, you say, ” 2 types of jets fans”
nyckage:
There you go again !!!! Giving ALL the credit to Tannenbaum.
PS. And I wouldn’t include Franchez in that group yet.
And remember, Mangini did not draft him, he just gave him to you.
David:
I’ll tyell you what exactly cause Kokinis termination ( self or otherwise).
The MEDIA bashing everything Browns from day one caused it, and Kokinis did NOT want to deal with those sharks, period end of story !!!!
It is BAD, REAL BAD in Cleveland, and ALL Media fueled, specially three, Grossi, Mary Kay and McManamon !!!
Of course, in Mangini’s case, ” the long term” means something around… Week 14.
hank the cleveland browns and their fans have struggled mightily long before 1999. i’m not up on my cleveland browns history but i would venture to say browns fans have been disappointed by their team ever since jim brown retired. they stunk in the 70s, had some mild success in the 80s but of course will live in infamy for those playoff losses to denver, couldn’t do much of anything in the 90s. then of course the biggest insult any fan can receive, the owner moves the team and they don’t even have a franchise for a while. As if it couldn’t get any worse the franchise that used to be the cleveland browns goes on to win a super bowl under the leadership of one of its former great players (ozzie newsome). There are many putrid franchises in the nfl (probably none lower than the detroit lions) but the cleveland browns have broken the hearts of their fans in every way possible, looking at all of this it actually makes me feel good to be a jet fan despite all the heartache and suffering since joe namath (which i wasn’t even lucky enough to be born yet i had to grow up in the todd/o’brien years)
Would tend to agree that this stuff is not JETS related anymore.
AABrooklyn:
Absolutely, everyhting you say is true. But, it seems that the fans have embraced a losers culture and LOVE to take out their frustration on everything Browns.
And like I said, how would you explain the Media
b(a)tshing and moaning about every single move Lerner, Kokinis or Mangini made even before the pads were on !!
I would like to know where in Kokinis history (the last 18 with the Ravens) did he deserve all the Media and fans bashing from the time he was hired? !!!!
The only answer is that they hate him simply because of his association with Mangini
TOON2388:
Take a look at the title of this thread, posted by Bassett. If you you not understand it I’ll tell you. It’s about Kokikis, so get over it !!!
Maybe they realized that the Jets stolea franchise QB (which they don’t have) and a elite beast of a WR for a bag of peanuts.
Mangini gone, if not at the end of this year, by week 8 next season. Sorry Hank, but…FAIL.
Well, at least the Browns fans know the team sucks intstead of constantly being on a roller coaster of one good year, one bad, or worse three great games, three horrible.
The uncertaintly here is pure torture at times, my knees are killing me from jumping on and off the band wagon and my hemmorhoids hurting do to all the bumps in the road.
Wise Old Jet Fan:
At least you haven’t been robbed of your sense of humor !!
Good for you, as most wagoneers on this blog must live miserable lives without theirs !!!
Hey Hank- Excuses are like A-Holes everyone’s got one and when things dont pan out the way you forsee you start making a lot of them…”blame it on the media” same ole crap
The idea of Mangini hiring his own GM is just flat out dumb and ass backwards. Who hires their boss?
The owner of the Browns is to blame for all of this.
