Sanchez: On Pace With Some Good Ones?

Eight games is a general reference for getting a sense of how rookie NFL quarterbacks project forward. Why? I can’t be sure, but half a season seems like a fair sample size. To that end, I took a quick sampling of quarterbacks who have succeeded in the NFL (as or since their rookie year) and wanted to do some comparisons to see how Mark Sanchez has stacked up so far in eight games against some of the league’s better quarterbacks.

Here’s how Sanchez looks in comparison to just a handful of players. I’d like to get a wider set of data, but this at least gives you a taste of how he’s doing.

So, from what I can tell, he’s pretty much on pace. The Saints game happened, and there’s no taking it back, but you could see how things might be different if you were to remove 5 INTs from that number. I’m pleased with what I’ve seen of him on and off the field, but it’s how he plays not only throughout the game, but within the two minute that will determine where his career goes from here.

  1. i’ve watched alot (or waaay too much football) and its obvious he has skills and the makeup.

i havent seen any plays that make me go wow… thats a big time qb… but i did see those out of the likes of tony romo.

i really doubt the jets will be in the market for a starting qb anytime soon. my marker has always been how confident do i feel with this guy down 4, with 2 minutes and a timeout left? sanchez will definitely have some great moments for this franchise.

but comparing to others is fudgy at best.

how many super bowls would peyton have won on new england? how many would brady have won on indy? how many would roethlisberger have won in cincy? need the other pieces on the team.

  2. No Matt Ryan on the list?

Truthfully the result is consistant with what should have been the expectation but the bar was raised was too high by Flacco, Matt Ryan, Rex Ryan and the media.

Now its time to sit back, relax and watch him and the coach grow into what hopefully will be very nice long term careers in green and white (and i mean green and white, please).

  3. THE QB MAYBE THE COACH IS AN IDIOT

  4. steviek nails it. Especially in the TD column.

Flacco looks weak. But how many rushing TDs did he engineer? They were the original ‘manage the running game and toss a few’ attack. A better stat there would be scoring drives.

Also obvious is that on a 3-13 Colts team, Peyton was all they had. So, more attempts, more completions, more scores. And many more losses.

  5. I think he is a keeper. He has all the skills that you can’t teach: pocket presence, toughness (he took some hard hits yesterday and bounced back up. With Chad, we all would be holding our breath), smart, has the right attitude. All his current shortcomings can be fixed–he is a rook as much as some on this board don’t want to deal with that. Baring injury, I think/hope he is the long term answer. So, now instead of spending our offseason planning around the most important position on the team, we can start to build depth that, if things go correctly, will be the players he wins a SB with. Unless, we’re the Jets and we F it up.

  6. The one thing that strikes and worries me about Sanchez:

In Week 1 vs. Houston, it was stunning to see him move about the pocket. He seemed ultra-aware. His feet were so quick, constantly moving until he found what he liked, then quick-set and throw. His awareness and avoidance of pressure were astonishing to watch.

Now, he’s locking in, not moving as much, picking up pressure too late — in short, he seems to have lost his sense of awareness, doing the opposite of everything that was so exciting to watch in Week 1 (where he HAD to be dealing from base instinct).

  7. I would say that the Steelers used the ‘manage the running game and toss a few’ attack before the Ravens. Big Ben used that to go 11-1 or something to that effect.

  8. except that this defense, special teams and running game are good, they are not consisitent enough to be on par with those steeler teams.

if the jets were up 14-6, 17-10 in the 3rd q all the time , thats exactly the game plan we’d be getting.

sanchez looked like he couldnt even complete a pass in the first half yesterday. what plays should the oc be calling? they got into a position where they absolutely had to throw and he responded very well.

  9. Interesting stats, thanks for posting them. I think he’s been decent, and will only get better.

  10. I’ve been blown away by how good his ball fakes are — the bootleg for the TD yesterday fooled absolutely everyone on the field with the exception of the side judge, it was that good.

From what I’ve seen, I admit I was wrong for thinking they shouldn’t have taken him. He seems to be generally learning from his mistakes, and can seem to move the ball downfield when needed. If the coach had simply kicked the extra points, or Hartsock hadn’t shifted illegally, he would’ve driven them to a tying field goal, and I liked their chances in OT.

But that’s what you want to see — he’s showing nice flashes that he’s going to be a very good player. And making progress.

  11. R,

had to love the miami player who was pointing the other direction like there was a fumble recovery in the pile because jones didnt have the ball, as sanchez was spiking the ball in the endzone.

talk about being able to block out the crowd.

  12. Not to be a picker of nits but Sanchez threw 5 picks to the Bills. He was much more stingy with the Saints, they only got 3.

If he starts to play consistently the way he did in the 2nd half yesterday he will be a very good QB. I’d like to see him rollout more, he is very good throwing on the run.

  13. He is, after all, a rookie.. A game or 2 aside, he hasn’t been too bad..
He has his moments of greateness…
He has his moments of rediculousness…

For half the game yesterday, i was irate with him..
Then, he helps lead the offense right back into the game..

Overall, i like the kid.. I hope he’s a great one..

  14. The way he responded to the fumble and kickoff returns…consistently marching the team back into the game..shows me this kid will be more than fine , he’s gonna be special. You just get a sense about him that he wants to be great and that desire, physical tools and intelligence is not the makeup of losers…This kid is gonna be gooooddd!

  15. Viva Sanchez! Muera Special Teams!

  16. miketaliaferro, some1 put fear in the kid. This weekend he took a step forward when he took the big hit. Up till now he has been running away from any contact instead of being a man in the pocket. he needs to take some of those hits in there. all the good QBs do, and its how they do after that defines them. The verdict is still out for Sanchez but he treminds me of young Elway.

  17. Well from what we have seen so far of Sanchez he is definitely not Jamarcus Russell Or Ryan Leaf or Akili Smith or Browning Nagle. The question at this point is how he finishes the year out and how he plays in his 2nd year. Most of the great ones show the most improvement in their 2nd seasons as a pro although he may take a little longer since he had such a short college career. From what I have seen so far I believe he has everything needed to be great, he just needs the experience and take his lumps. I new going in we would have to go through this with a rookie QB but all the signs are there to suggest he will be very good for a long time…..ditto Rex Ryan but we have to be patient it is ONLY year one for both of them. Go Jets!!!

  18. R in CT i heard a few fans mention going for 2 on the train back from the game as well.

In my opinion though, people are forgetting that if we didn’t go for two and just kicked the extra point, the dolphins would have done the same thing.

IF the dolphins don’t go for 2 with the lead in the 4th q(which they would not have done had we just kicked the extra point), then that gives them 31 points…meaning we still would have needed a TD to win.
