Who Needs a Silver Lining?

At least Jets fans aren’t the only ones having sleepless nights? Even though yesterday was getaway day, it seems that the Jets players are having trouble reconciling , according to the Post.

“We’ve got the No. 1 rushing offense and No. 2 defense?” Woody said. “Usually, when you’ve got that you’re cooking with something. If somebody had told me that [before the season] I’d be jumping for joy.”

When safety Kerry Rhodes was asked what kind of record through eight games he’d have figured the Jets to have with those numbers, he said: “Seven and one, 6-2 maybe.”

Ryan said, “It’s hard to win in this league, but I would say at least 6-2.”

A breath later, Ryan said, “Yeah, we’re definitely sick about it.

“We’ve got to find ways to win instead of finding ways to lose,” the coach said. “We’ve found enough [ways to lose].”

The Jets’ defense has allowed only nine touchdowns in eight games, but opponents have scored six return touchdowns on them — Ginn’s two kickoffs, a Mark Sanchez interception and three lost fumbles.

“We’ve given up [six] touchdowns when the defense has not even been on the field,” Ryan said. “Now that has got to change.”

A lot is going to have to break for them if they are going to catch up to where they want to be … even though it’s just a few plays difference, it’s ended up costing this team at least two games, if not more. This team could be 6-2 if they had some better game prep, game management and better execution across three phases. As Corey said on today’s radio show, even if you’ve got faith in your team, you have to have faith in other people’s teams too.

Ready for a silver lining? To me, as much as I hate to say it half way through this season, this team seems pretty well set up for next year, and by then Mark Sanchez will have a full season under his belt, which based on his progress could be substantial. There’s going to have to be some changes on the lines and the team is going to need to reload on depth in a number of key places (like special teams) but for the most part, this team will be intact next year and if they can get consistent prep, management and execution, they could be a whale in 2010.

  1. We are only half way through the season. If we perform in the next four games like we did in the first 4, everyone will be talking about the jets in a much different tone. Enough with the death knell talk, save it for if we lose to NE.

  2. If you look @ the season the three phases of the game has let the jets down at some point in the season contributing to the 4-4 record.. Hopefully the bye week will clean up what needs to be cleaned up and taken care of…

  3. Are we seeing the necessary intangible element of professionalism? Are the Jet players acting like veteran professionals? There are enough players on this team (e.g. Jenkins, Faneca, Ellis) who have been through the wars and know what it takes to win. While Ryan is a rookie head coach, he has been around the game long enough to know the “winning attitude”. It is not out-talking your opponent, or talking smack, or being an overgrown kid on a sandlot. It is about being well prepared (physically, emotionally and with an effective, thought out game plan). It is about reacting maturely to adversity and not commiting foolish penalties. It is about coming back from a deficit and not hanging your head. It is about admitting that you screwed up and that the only statistic that means anything is the final score. Are they ready to walk the walk or are they just talk? Mangini was an obsessive/compulsive egotist who said little and allowed others to say even less. Ryan is a born-again Ralph Cramden who certainly knows enough about defense to lead this team that has been mired in losing since SBIII. When this season is over, I expect Ryan to learn from all of what has gone wrong. They need performance, not bravado; they need wins, not statistical dominance; they need to act like professionals, not collegians. We need a SB; it has been far too long.

  4. I think we have a QB for the future, but I don’t think we have a coach for the future. He lost me when he picked up the water bucket in Oakland to pour it on his asst coaches head. What head coach is involved in ‘player” stuff like that. I turned to my wife and said “he’s a clown”. He’s stubborn and not very strategic. I don’t think the bye week will help this man or this team.

Too much talent is being wasted.

  5. I’m not ready to lay down on 2009 yet. Lots of football to play & lots of time for other teams to fall apart. We actually need to root for the Fish Sunday against the Pats! GO CHAD HENNE er…sort of.

  6. km from rockland – the oakland game was about callahan getting revenge on al davis. rex wanted to stick it to the raiders because of they way their front office treated callahan and also rex’s brother. that shutout was meaningful to the team in many ways

call it whatever you want, but the coach doesnt make tackles. the players have to execute. and unfortunately special teams coverage let us down. but i like the overall mentality and identity of the team. they are not going to back down. they are not going to get passive. mangini would have probably played prevent D vs brady in week 2. i like the aggressive nature of ryan – sure he looks stupid if it fails, but i would take that instead of the passive “bend but dont break” mentality of the previous coaching staff

  7. I have to disagree. I think Ryan will be here for the future. It still is only his first…eight games. Yes I agree he has to be aware of the other sides of the team besides just the D, but I like his swagger and what he brings to the team. He makes his players give 110% all the time. Me personally I like all the confident yet borderline cocky talk. IOt is a breath of fresh air from Mangini. I mean look at the Browns…Glad he is not here. The bye week should be a time to reflect and fix and be ready for the next 8 games. New England and Indy will be tough. Jax, the Toronto Bills, Panthers Bucs should be wins. Atlanta I give the edge to the Jets being at home in December adn the Bengals the last week could go either way. Id say shoot for atleast 6-2. Well see what happens. GO JETS!

  8. There are plenty of examples of tough in your face coaches winning in the NFL. There is not one formula.

  9. Are you kidding me, already looking to next year? Wow, we as Jets fans are pathetic. We are so trained to look to next year instead of saying “this losing season is unacceptable!” If we can’t win this year with this team what makes you think we will win next year? We are not a young team. We were supposed to be built to win now. What happened to winning now? We don’t have a bunch of draft picks to get younger, we must win now!

  10. I’m not going to look towards next season just yet, we’re 4-4 not 2-6, it’s not like we need people to lose, we still control our destiny. We went 6-1 after our bye week before we collapsed, so I wouldn’t count out the Jets just yet.

Oh and a side note, I’ve been a fan since the end of 2004 and every year after there was always questions about the QB position in the offseason, and finally we know who are QB is going to be for next year at least.

  11. One of the more reasonable posts I’ve seen about this team lately. Yes, it’s hopefully next year, and there does need to be some reloading/retooling, esp. along the lines, but I don’t know how you don’t have any optimism about a roster that seems really talented in a lot of places and a coach who brings one of the most important things- a great defense.

Let’s see what happens in the final 8 games. If they go 1-7 or something crazy I might eat my words, but I’m hoping we’ll see them win all the games they should and just one of the ones they shouldn’t (NE, IND, CIN, ATL). If they do that it’s 9-7 with an inexperienced rookie, and playoffs are not out of the realm of possibility.

  12. if new england loses to either the dolphins or the colts ( their next 2 games) and the jets take care of business against the jags then the jets pats game will be for sole possession of 1st place in the division. A jets win would put them at 6-4 and the pats the same but the jets wouldhave the head to head tie breaker…….anybody that doesn’t realize this and is already looking to next year is ridiculous…..they are right in the thick of it coming out of the bye…..its not the same old jets…..the fans should have the same confidence in the team as rex ryan does…..I say jets make a huge second half run and are a team nobody wants to play in the playoffs

  13. In 2006, Jets were 4-4 at the bye coming off a terrible loss in Cleveland (with a rookie head coach). They went on a 6-2 run (including a win in NE) to make the playoffs. And they didn’t have nearly as much talent as this team.

  14. I can’t ever pull for the dolphins. Classless MFs! Joey Porter, Jason Taylor Ted Ginn shushing the crowd. I hope they lose like forever. Pathetic to lose to this bunch 3 straight.

Rex should run the ST unit ragged these next 2 weeks. Schotty should be made to take situation tests. Game, time, score and field position given to him then have him script the plays in like 2 minutes. I would have the team win to avoid the remedial consequences.

I hate to say this but it does feel like wait til next year. Our remaining games we have 4 wins at best Jax,Buff, TB and Car.

2 competritive games Cinci and ATL

    2 Losses NE and Indy

None of the wins are gimmes.

I think we are looking at Indy vs. N.O. in the SB which would show just how tough of a schedule we had this year. If we go 8-8 with this team we go 14-2 next year with the weaker schedule and a QB with a year under his belt a healthy Leon and Jinx.

Hope we win, but you have to look at the big picture.

Hopefully Schotty is fired at the seasons end or we are at this same point next year.

  15. Again I am a little confused why the SOJ or the blues some fans are crying about… Was I devastated by the Buffalo and latest Miami debacle YES!!…but only becasue I lost focus (after 3-0) on what this year was all about

A rookie HC and rookie QB…Hoping for 8-10 wins with an outside shot at the playoffs…. The Pats win made be think we were legit contenders but right now were not….We are really just back to where we started….um without our 2 game-changing players… in leon and big Jenks. We will be fine!!!!

  16. Just for the record I would have been devastated even if we werent 3-0 to start the season…every Jet loss ruines my week!! it just hurt a little more this time

  17. Enough about “next year.” That’s what Jets fans have been saying forever. I’m a 27 year fan, and I’m always looking forward to next year. Come out after the bye, and go 7-1. Make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Don’t care anymore about next year. Win the Super Bowl.

  18. James in TN, I’d rather schottenheimer be hired as a head coach due to his part in a Jets superbowl win this year, rather than him getting fired for costing us the season. again. I mean, he should do SOMETHING good for the Jets before he leaves here.

and in my opinion right now we’re looking at 9-7 or 10-6 for the season, 11-5 if we can steal one from the patriots or colts. but we’ll see, we should be winning a lot more games. Hopefully this bye week will allow the whole team to regroup and come out with some passion and fierceness that leads to a bunch of impressive wins in the second half of the season. I want to be a scary team in the playoffs, which we have the potential to be with that defense and running game. Hopefully Mark Sanchez can click with his receivers more often, and it’d be nice if the special teams didn’t give up 2 touchdowns a game.

  19. I’ve been a Jet fan for 23 years and….

….Ya’ll need to chill. Seriously, people already bashing Rex, in his first 8 games as a head coach. He is also a rookie people don’t forget that, and if you think the jets would be the second ranked defense in the league without him as our coach, then you know nothing about football.

Sure talk alot of smack, but the defense has backed it up. We are literally 5 plays from being 8-0 with a rookie head coach and a rookie QB.

I know you all want your wins, i want them too, but I also see it that we have been in every game we have played this year. We haven’t been blown out (like those “great” Giants), we are 4-4 when everyone was saying we’d win 4 games at best this year. So stop being such a little girl about the Jets and man up and show some damn pride.

Remember people, we could be Lions or Brown fans.

  20. AKA Drew…Could not have been put any better… Johnny Reefer awesome name, not as eloquent as Drew but fine points…the reality is what you guys have been saying, 10 wins this year was supposed to be the absolute max, and we still can achieve that without having to go undefeated in the second half. Lets hope the Jets that showed up for the first 4 weeks is the team that comes out in the second half. I am a firm believer that sucess does not come instantly. You can never achieve great things without having to overcome adversity, people saying you cant do this or that. Say what you want about Rex, but I guaren-damn-tee that what this Jet team did in vs the Dolphins wk.17 last year will never happen under him. They will fight, scratch and claw and the chips will fall where they may. But I feel alot better about having a team like that then the soft ,lifeless, boring team we had with Eric Mangini

  21. It is easy to disagree with some of the things Rex says and does, but I have faith in what he is doing and what he is trying to accomplish. He is a rookie HC he has a rookie QB, there will be some growing pains. I think he will adjust to being a HC at this level and he and the Jets will be fine. Anything they accomplish this year will be great, but I think the best is still ahead for this team. If they can win six of there last eight they have a good chance to make the playoffs, then anything can happen. I for one am excited about where this team is going.
    GO JETS!!!!

  22. the jets were doin fine until those obnoxious new orleans who dat douches came on here…even though we can still make the playoffs that 3-0 start that suprised everyone gave us a nice cushion but we gave that all away cause of the 4 losses beeing so close to each other

  23. in all REALITY,we REALLY dont have to start WORRYING about NOT making the playoffs until we lose SIX games.

  24. I like Rex Ryan as our head coach. He is one of the best defensive coaches in the league. Any first year coach is going to have to learn about the decision- making process that it takes to control a game. He has not been the reason for our losses. His players like playing for him, they play hard, and they are well prepared..

Our problems are on the Offensive side of the ball. Most of our woes come, as a result of having a rookie QB. Sanchez is in learning mode. This is tough for Jet fans. We know we should be winning but, the team is paying the price for grooming a rookie QB All of the talent on this team (and we have lots of talent) cannot overcome lots of INT’s and fumbles. We saw it last year, when Brett was throwing the ball more to the opposition than to his Jet receivers. Let’s just hope that the Sanchez learning curve is a short one.

This brings me to Schottenheimer. I don’t think this team can win with him as OC. Unfortunately, Rex feels that he walks on water. Too bad Rex doesn’t have a great wealth of knowledge on the Offensive side of the ball or Schotzy would be long gone. With the talent we have on Offense, we should have scored 60 points on Miami and their rookie corners. I don’t know whether it is harder to watch a struggling Sanchez or Schotzy’s play calling. Callahan should be running the O.

  25. This team is good enough to win now, but it’s uphill. At Pats, AT INDI & Falcons at home. We need to beat the Pats & 1 of the other 2 & then run the table on every one else. We can do it-this team’s defense is good enough to be in those games but it’s easy to see why this is a tough war.

  26. I actually forgive Rex for not replacing Schotty with Callahan because one of my cousin’s closest friends works for the Jets and claims that Rex would love to remove Schotty but Tanny will not allow him to do so…Actually, Tanny told Rex when he interviewed for the job that Rex had to give Schotty carte blanche on offense or he would not be hired!!!!!!!!! Supposedly, Mangini wanted Schotty out as well but Tanny nixed the idea..Mangini then began scripting the opening drives of every game on the offense and Schotty didn’t like it because Mangini’s game plan would actually work and then Schotty would go on to lay an egg on offense…Tanny protects Schotty because of Marty…Tanny even wanted Schotty to be the head coach over Rex Ryan but was afraid of negative reaction from the fans and bad press from the media…Tanny claimed that Schotty had this amazing interview which was gonna be Tanny’s lame excuse for hiring Schotty…

  27. Thanks Jetski,
I felt Rex’s hands were tied in regard to Schotty. Woody will need to bring down the hammer on this situation if we continue at the same pace.

    Go JETS!!!!

    And no more throwback jerseys!

  28. I think it will be determined buy the pats game . I think indy will be resting by the time we play them .

I also think we can beat the falcons . we should beat the rest of the schedual , but we also should have beat buf and miami .so you never know

  29. We need to concentrate on the 2011 season. I’m not watching any more games this year. I’ll watch college tape instead. Got to get ready for the draft.

  30. 2011? You do know it’s 2009, right? Aside from the fact that we’re still in this season (after this week, depending on the outcomes, we can be just one game out of a wildcard spot), why not next year. We’ll be returning essentially the entire team (assuming Tanny works the contracts and resigns Braylon and Leon) and Sanchez is clearly showing improvement. (Skipping the whole “it’s not over until WE decide it is” -Bluto) Why is next year written off as well? If anything, I think next year is our year based on a full season in Rex’s scheme on defense, our O-line being together for a full season of zone blocking, and Sanchez more experienced, and the fact that we can STILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR (although it’s kind of a long shot now).

  31. Gholston sucks.

  32. Jetski,

If true that’s great insider knowledge. It sucks for the team and for us fans but maybe most of all sucks for Rex. Sort of similar to how Whisenhunt was forced to retain Clancy Pendergast as DC in Arizona the past two years. Once they got to the SB KW had the juice to force the issue and get the guy he wanted out and replaced with his own guy. Now, Arizona’s D is an improved unit, not nearly the liability it has been w/that great Offense.

Unfortunately I don’t see Rex and the Jets making the SB this year. If we can somehow squeak into the playoffs and are undone by lack of offense while the D is carrying us MAYBE he’ll have earned the right in Woody’s mind to get rid of Schottenheimer. Honestly, like a prior poster said I’d rather we make a big run and Schotty gets hired as a HC somewhere. Maybe in Buffalo so we can count on a future of inconsistency and cute play calling twice a year. The possible problem I see is that w/so many big name coaching candidates available next year we might be saddled w/BS for another year or two.

  33. To be honest, I think Schotty goes away next year as a head coach. I know, I know, none of us would ever hire him. But he has the pedigree and is apparently high on a lot of team’s lists. With a lot of coaches on the hot seat, let’s hope a bunch of jobs open up and someone “steals” Schotty from us. I don’t like Callahan as an O-Coordinator, but I know Rex will because Callahan likes a power running game and vertical passing game…basically the exact opposite of Schotty.

  34. WW85 — You need to root against the Dolphins on Sunday.

If the Dolphins win, they will have the same record as the Jets with the tie-breaker, and very winnable games vs Tampa, Carolina, Bills, Tenn, Hou and Jax. They can easily be 10-6.

If the Pats win, they will be 6-2, sure, but they travel to Indy next week, then play us. We would have to beat them obviously. Then they travel to N.O. after they play us, and would only need one more loss in their last five games (at Mia, at Hou) to finish 10-6, without the tiebreaker.

Sad as it sounds, we need NE to knock the Dolphins to 3-5 and hope they fall out of the race, then deal with NE later.

  35. Again dad county, be careful about Miami beating NE… they play Tampa and Carolina after and would also be 6-4 and THEY would have sole possession of 1st place, with an easier schedule. We need NE to win this week, then lose to Indy, Jets, N.O., while Miami maybe loses confidence at 3-5.

  36. I haven’t even thought about wild card… I suppose we are rooting for Giants and Lions this week. Bengals too (since we play them later)

Hey, as a Jet fan who quit fantasy football I need something to root for this week.

  37. I came to the conclusion after the 2nd Miami loss that unless this team really starts to gel and learns to finish games we are winning 7-8 games this year. We might shock a team like Indy or Atlanta but we are not consistent enough on offense right now to put together 4-5 wins with this upcoming schedule.

We will start to really feel the loss of Leon and Jenkins as the season goes on. Our defesne will keep us very respectable and will probably tease us with a late playoff push but right now its not looking very promising for this year

  38. I have to steal a line for Dennis Green in his famous comercial and I quote,”THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE.” The Jets are exactly that…going into the season knowing we has a rookie HC and QB high expectations were 10-6 and a possible wild card…The Jets started HOT and won there first three games causing national media attention and the thought of winning the division and possible a superbowl run…Well the reality of this season is exactly where we are…”WE ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE” meaning 10-6 is about the best we can expect the JETS to accompolish this year…#1 in rushing offense and #2 in defense but yet us Jets fan are still complaining…Its a hard road to the top with the injuries on offense and defense, rookie head coach and quarterback, inconsistent play in all three phases of the game, and expectation that far exceeded reality…I’m praying we make the playoffs one way or another but reality is a road taken less than often…JETS FAN FOR LIFE…

  39. As to Schotty…he is in a bit of a bad spot right now….

As I have stated too many times here. This guy think he is S Payton and is not happy running the ball to win games…What owner or GM will come knocking on Schotty’s door if all he does is run the ball 65% of the time? Its not dynamic to draw attetnion to his ultimate goal which is to be a HC.

Now that Rex has clearly handcuffed him (for the most part) he will not be a headcoach next year and will probably goes somewhere else to be a OC.

Be careful for the Callahan OC deal. He loves to run the ball but his system is known to be very complicated. Not good for a young QB

  40. Well after reading these comments I am glad to see that a majority is still in tuned for this season and not looking ahead to next season. There is still a lot of season to play. I am looking forward to a playoff push. The goal is to get to the playoffs and who knows what can happen then. As for all the people who are jumping off the bridge now…I hope the Jets make the playoffs, and if they do…I don’t want to see those people come back to the bridge they jumped off from. They’ll have to wait until next year.

  41. Well put Andy…….

  42. Andy nailed it. Once you get into the playoffs, everyone is on the same plane. Anyone remember the Arizona Cardinals from last season? They limped into the playoffs, but got hot and made the Superbowl (and were one play away from winning it). Stop the violin’s and focus on this season, a lot of things have yet to unfold.

  43. When a team leads the NFL in rushing, and has the #2 overall defense, they should be a super bowl contendor. Theres no excuse for the Jets not being 6-2. The 2nd Miami game and the buffalo game were inexcusable losses. Rex has to do a better job of finding ways to win those games.

For those of you who are already calling for Rex head, that is inexcusable as well. This guy has turned the Jets defense into a feared unit, something we havent had in decades. We all raised our expectations after the first 3 games, but we have a rookie QB, and a rookie HC. The future is whats important, and the future looks bright.

  44. Like I said the only positive to the Jets being 4-4 and the turmoil is ……..you once again get to see who are real jets fans and who are fair weather waiting for the other shoe to drop tools

  45. Just like a few other recent years(2000, 2001, 2002, 2004(, we have a talented team with some question marks. Ide rather be us than Det, Wash, St Lou, etc.

As for Rex, if hes a little bit out there with the bucket pouring and trash talking, it ok as long as we have a top 5 defense. Defense wins championships we all know that. Pittsburgh last year won with a number 1 def and a top 10 offense (horrible oline). If we can have a top 5 (i think hell keep us in the top 3) for the next two year, with our O-line intact (with DEPTH next year Tanny!) we will be in the AFC championship game.

As for this year, there PLENTY of football left, we have a bye at a great point in the season, so let’s see what happens.
If you want to jump off the bandwagon, then dont let the door hit you in the you know what.

The three teams infront of us for the wild card (HOU, CIN, SD and BAL) have tough schedules and so does NE. So lets hope Lito and Cotch can get healthy, one good practice and work on FINISHING a game. This team has potential still.

  46. I said it in the beginning of the year, and I’ll say it again.

This Jets team reminds me of the 2007 Phillies.
They talked a ton of trash in the beginning of 2007 BEFORE they proved anything, and the media and baseball fans around the country gave them crap for it. It wasn’t until the last month of the season that the team truly gelled and took over the division (with the help of an epic collapse of my Mets of course).

This Jets team DOES have swagger. Sure, they picked some fights that they lost, but they wipe the blood off their face and want to jump right back into the fight until they finally come out on top.

I’m not making predictions. However, I do like the direction that this team is going, regardless of the heart wrenching losses we’ve been subjected to.

  47. We are an average football team until Rex proves differently. What happended to the quarterback that would scramble around and make plays outside of the pocket? They must let Sanchez mover around on rollouts a little more. Let him make plays with his feet and his arm.

  48. there is still 1/2 a season left. anything can happen. brady could go down. henne could go down. there is still a ton of football left to play

schotty frustrates me to no end, but i feel as though it might be good to keep him around for 2010. just so sanchez has another year of continuity in the offense. who knows, maybe with a better grasp of the offense by sanchez, schotty will look like a genious. but i agree that if we continue to see first and goal from the 8 and run, pass, pass….he needs to go

the bottom line when i look at the roster is i see that almost EVERY one of our skill players are young and in their primes. sanchez, leon, greene, J-Co, clown, edwards, keller, smith, revis, keller, lowery, leonhard. that is a solid foundation. with a few tweaks and added depth on the O and D lines, this team can be great for many years to come

  49. Cmon guys. The season is far from over for us.

When you have a top rushing attack and 2nd best defense in the league then November and December games should only get easier.
Based on that, I can easily see us going 6-2 and luckily edge out the pats for the best AFC east record. But that also depends on how the pats play the rest of the season.

  50. The talent is here! The Jets will starighten this out and put together a string of good wins.

We have a new coach, a new QB and a new defensive system, it takes some time to gel. I really believe we’re going to see a different team for the second half of the season. The bye week could not have come at a better time. A little rest, some time away, and they’ll come back ready to play.

  51. I still have my droughts with dirty Sanchez, but the defense looks good, It will be interesting to see if they can turn things around when the tougher part of the season starts.

    F-the pats

  52. at least there are still a few easy games on the schedule, but if we have to win the last 3 it could be trouble.

  53. “To me, as much as I hate to say it half way through this season, this team seems pretty well set up for next year, and by then Mark Sanchez will have a full season under his belt,…”

That statement just sickens me. I want to see the couching staff pull their heads out of their a$$ and put a 7-1 second half together. You don’t have two of the three best units and NOT win games.

I’m sorry guys but your not 7-1 or 6-2 and the reason for that is the couching decisions that have been made.

I hate seeing a team with so much talent fall to the way side on bad decisions. Two games where they should have limited the damage Sanchez was doing by going to the run game (hell pull the kid if it means you need to win the game, worked for McNabb) and the last 4 plays on the 12 yard line. i mean come on one run then put it back into a QBs hands that has been shakie all day? 3 poorly executed pass plays later, nothing.

one thing that is really annoying me is what they are doing with Sanchez psyche. in the beginning of the year he was able to bounce back and make plays. lately he’s running around back there looking to make a play instead of making a decision and executing it. be it a bad choice or not. he’s trying too hard now. And he doesn’t have too.

So far i give Rex and the staff (coaching) a C.

Circle the wagons and regroup or else the off season prep will start early this year…

  54. Rudibager, Brendan on other article threads, and others – good points on the fundamentals our team has. I like where we’re going – just the fact that we have the #2 defense in the league makes me smile cause I know that noone will take us lightly any longer. But to have such a powerful running game along with it? Out-effin-standing!

The defense hasn’t crashed with Jenk’s injury – something I was deathly afraid of before the season. That says alot about the coaches, and how the players have improved within this system. I mean, look at Pouha – with mangina, he would get pushed back 2, 3 yards every play. Now he holds his own, sometimes even holding a doubleteam block.

I like the new identity the team has, and like the idea that we’re going to be known first as a tough-ass defense and second as anything/everything else. The other aspects will get better, and then watch out, league!

been a couple of thoughts posted on how Rex has to take charge, be the HC. Valid, I guess… there is something to be said for knowing enough about the other two aspects of the game to be able to macro-manage that.

The Coordinators have to also know that they are subordinate to the HC, support the head honcho and do what’s best for the team. iirc, that’s what did in Fassel when he went to OC for the Ravens after the Giants let him go; Billick got tired of his being more mindful of who was getting hired as HC’s vice just running the offense as he was hired to do.

But I’ve also seen some thoughts that imply there’s some sort of tug-of-war amongst the coaches, to which I say – nuts. Ryan is not the kind of guy who will brook that, Scott isn’t the kind of player would keep his mouth shut about it if it was happening.

Yeah, Westhoff should’ve known better about Ginn last week – but even the best coaches, the ones who dominate in their areas, don’t win them all. I’ll take Westhoff, 2 returns by Ginn and all, for the next 10 years if he’s of a mind to be here… and I’ll guarantee the Jets place no worse than 4th in special teams performance in every one of those years.

Which would probably be closer to placing no worse than 2nd… if only we could find a punter… :-)

  55. AKA Drew, Brendan,

Thanks. I only speak as I feel. And I love being a fan. The ups and downs of the season…it is exciting yet sometimes depressing, but no matter what I still bleed green and white. LETS GO!

  56. 5-11 boys! Then our Super Bowl – the 2010 NFL Draft..

  57. Jetski,

I don’t believe, for a second, that Woody told Rex what to do, with Shotzy. Woody does not know football well enough, to tell a football lifer, like Rex Ryan, what moves to make with his coaches. Have you ever seen Woody have an intelligent discussion about the nuances of pro football — Never. He is an heir. That’s where it ends.

  58. Oh and what the hell was Woodhead doing on ST who the hell is he tackling . Woodhead and the other 2 guys that cant tackle need to be off the active roster for the next game .

  59. Harvlis, I never said Woody…I said Tanny (Mike Tannenbaum)…

  60. Jetski,

    Sorry about that.

As for Tanny, I think he is doing a very good job. I am surprised he would feel so strongly about Schotzy. Especially since Schotzy will probably leave us for a HC job, within a year or two. Other teams will take anybody. See Rich Kotite and Eric Mangini.
