Bart Scott, The Optimist

by Bassett on November 4th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Bart Scott answered some questions on mindset and how that changes a team’s outlook.

“Sometimes when an organization hasn’t been successful, you have to learn how to win,” said linebacker Bart Scott. “What happens is when something goes bad, you expect more bad things to happen. But when you’re used to winning you always can find a way to win.

“When I was in Baltimore we always believed we could win and it starts with belief,” he said. “Not belief from 10 or 15 guys, it has to be from the whole team that no matter what comes up you can win.”

A nice sentiment, but I think it’s more than pixie dust and good thoughts that get you winning, but we see Scott’s point. You do have to believe in yourself, but at the same time, you also have to be prepared for any given contingency and how to react accordingly. Overall, I like what Ryan’s bringing to the team, but hard work, preparation, discipline putting the best players forward and a hard self-assessment also help get teams ready to win.

We have a good team in place, a QB who can win the game for us, good RB’s, one of the best O-lines, a great Defense, and an elite special team unit which only gives up a KR for a TD once every 20 years. We have stars. We just need the attitude and every player to be in synch with each other. OK never mind we have the attitude, theirs no doubt about it, but we need to show that on the field not in front of the mics.

  2. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Bart Scott should have said….. in Balitmore we dont have a bunch of crybaby fans that jump off the bandwagon when things get rough…. We are trying to change the “losing: culture here with the coaching staff and the players we have brought in.

We have a great defense and a promising coach and offense. There are going to be some bumps (which we all should have expected) but we will get it straight and come out after the buy week flying so pull up your panties you fairy boy Jets fans.

  3. avatar Jetsfantasydefense says:

I completely concur…you have to be excited about this team. Every team with the exception of the 07 Patriots goes through bumps throughout the season.
I believe this team will win 10 games and hopefully that will be enough to get us into the playoffs.

  4. avatar LifeLongJetsFan86 says:

They’ve been playing well just not winning games. Which is encouraging.

    Lol and nice comment Drew

  5. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m tired of hearing this losing culture BS. That’s such an excuse. The Jets were 9-7 last year, not 0-16. What he should say is we need to learn how to finish off games. We lost to Buffalo for god’s sake. Sorry I don’t buy it.

  6. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

We do have a solid team. That should be 6-2 or 7-1. Need to finish games. One credit(the only) I give to the Pats is they play 60 minutes of football. Whistle to Whistle. Jets do that and we are in the playoffs.

  7. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Bassett, you miss the point. It is not that pixie dust and happy thoughts are enough to win; their absence almost certainly helps snatch defeat from the Jaws of Victory.

As long as losing begets criticisms, rationalizations, acceptance of progress, losing will continue like a persistent itch.

This team, and perhaps Drew is right its fans, have neither pixie dust and happy thoughts and have lost three very winnable games.

Folks can rationalize all they want but this year’s variation of the NY Jets has all the talent it needs to win, apparently even sans Jenkins.

What it also has is a losers mentality and a few key decisions that have backfired such as putting Danny W and Vernon G on the roster instead of Kick Team specialists who can stay in their lane and tackle.

I can no longer watch this losing, but Bart is actually on the right path as Jim Garrett was many years ago at Columbia U. The Media got him fired and perhaps the NY Media will do in Rex.

  8. avatar Chase says:

I don’t think it is fair to call the disappointed fans “cry babies.” The Jets have had 3 painful losses in the last 4 weeks. Including just a few days ago.

I’m generally pretty optimistic, but with Oakland being the last team we’ve beaten since the (now) 1-6 Titans in week 3, I think I’ll wait until I see us beat another good team before thinking playoffs again.

  9. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    JAGG

I have always said the “losing” culture is created by our awful fanbase….headed by Joe Beningo

  10. avatar James in TN says:

Bart should have said he will stop writing checks with his mouth that his play on the field can’t cash.

    THAT should be his statement.

  11. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

I think its completely fair to call them cry baby fans. They act like we are the worst team in the NFL after 4 very tough loses. 3 of the loses came down to the last play of the game, and we have had the lead in all of em but 1

  12. avatar Davo says:

What he’s saying is basically correct – a team like the Colts can play badly for weeks in a row and still win games.

The problem is that the Jets have, against Miami at least, played very well and lost. It’s a slight difference in terminology, but fundamentally huge.

  13. avatar Davo says:

    @nyckage:
“We have a good team in place, a QB who can win the game for us” – to be fair, we haven’t seen that yet. The QB has been, in three losses, the guys who’s lost the game twice, and couldn’t win the game once.

    Cheers

  14. avatar nyckage says:

    Davo

I kinda meant he can develop and he hasn’t thrown an int in 2 weeks, so that has to mean something.

YOU ARE WRONG AGAIN!! HOW DUMB CAN YOU BE!!!

This jets organization has been a losing organization for its entire existence. The only glimmering hope came in 1968. Overall the jets organization top to bottom has made poor management decisions. In the 1980′s the Walt Michaels era incapsulated how far the organization came since 1968. We had several chances but did not have the proper structure in place. I can still see purple and black underneath your all your words. You yourself don’t know how to win!!!! This organization was pointed in the right direction after Parcells left and Mangini tried to work the impossible. You above all should keep your mouth shut when talking about this organization and the fans that have to sit, watch, and listen to all the information coming out each week and support this team.

  16. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    And then you have fonzie…..

My post earlier was directed at the fonzie’s of the world

  17. avatar SackDance99 says:

One thing the NY Post article noted is that the Jets have to be more consistent. With 4 quality wins, we’ve seen 4 losses that point to problems with consistent effort. Sanchez’s effort against the Saints was poor because his ball security was terrible. The INTs are something he has to work on, but handling the football like a loaf of bread in your own endzone is a recipe for disaster and has nothing to do with maturing as a QB, it’s lack of common sense. Sanchez was, again, terrible against the Bills, but it was really Hartsock’s holding penalty on a running play that sunk the Jets. Again, common sense…why even think of grabbing jersey when your team is in FG range and only needs a chip shot to win. The defense had a poor effort in the first Dolphins loss and the special teams in the second…I think both losses showed flaws in Rex’s HC skills because his defense wasn’t ready to play in the first game and he deactivated too much talent from specials in the second (of course, we’ll never know if Ahmad Carroll would’ve made a difference, but he would not have hurt). The base of this team is defense and special teams. Rex has to keep those groups in tip top form and, then, hope his rookie QB doesn’t make so many mistakes that it costs the Jets games. Implicit with starting a rookie QB is the fact that nobody else can make mistakes on offense…let Sanchez worry about the game and help him…losing 5 yards for dumb offsides, illegal shifts or holds on running plays just make it harder on him (a hold by an OL to prevent Sanchez from being sacked is unfortunate, but necessary…a hold on a run just means the run is potentially stuffed, the problem with Hartsock’s penalty is that TJ would have been able to get good yardage anyhow).

I guess I’m an optimist because I think this Jets team is real close. I had the same feeling in ’97. But, this time the AFC doesn’t have a complete team like the Broncos as a roadblock. Each AFC and NFC elite team has flaws. The ’97 team needed a QB; this team needs the QB to mature and be able to orchestrate the offense competently and bail out the defense or specials if needed. In Sanchez’s defense, he did do that the 1st game against Miami and maybe some better playcalling and he would’ve had a better chance to do it this past week. But, he needs to get that completion pct. over 60%. If he had done that this past Sunday, the Jets could’ve had a commanding early lead. IMO, if Sanchez just completed 60% of his passes and had a QB rating over 80, the Jets would likely be, at least, 6-2. I’m not complaining, I’m just emphasizing that it’s hard to win with a rookie QB. But, rookies get better and I expect a better Sanchez in the second half. But, it would also be nice for all the Jets to play with a tad more discipline and common sense, including Bart Scott.

  18. avatar nyckage says:

Go fonzie go fonzie go fonzie

And I thought my Giant friends were harsh towards the Jets, but you a Jet fan are on a whole another level.

  19. avatar Davo says:

@nyckage, Yes, you’re correct – there is NO doubting Sanchez has the talent, he’s the real deal.

why would there be crybaby fans in baltimore …?? they won a super bowl 4 years into thier exsistance….

when you were in baltimore bart you were on a perennial winner …… you came into a winning team that had just won a super bowl ….. you were on a team with ray lewis. they had a winning culture before ya got there…

AKA Drew is on fire…you speak as if the words came from my own head…Sackdance, always love to read your stuff

Hey Fonzie never had a chance with regard to his attitude towards the Jets and his general knowledge of what football is about, how its played and why things happen the way they do. Hank is his dad. Hank is probably a great dad with respect to the important things in life but had turned his son into a cynical, ignorant mess of a Jet fan. The kid has been taught to worship at the altar of mediocrity that is Mangini/Pennington (Awesome work Brendan)

We have a bunch of good football players that are learning to gel and WIN CONSISTENTLY. It takes more than the defense bailing you out all the time. As for people who say Rex doesnt make adjustments, just look at the second Dolphin game and how the defense performed. Is it a mere coincidence that Sanchez has not thrown a pick since the Buffalo game? No. You can say what you want, but no one is going to want to play this team if they can play a complete game. If they can get anywhere close to the effort they put forth the first 4 weeks, they are straight up still dangerous

    Eddie Digio,

    On Nov 3rd you said:

“Absolutely wrong again. Read Bill Parcells book “The Winner Within” where he talks about the situation. He absolutely says that LT had and still would have had a different set of rules. He goes out of his way to say how he treats EVERYONE differently from the way he approached Phill Simms to Jeff Hostetler.

DIGIO, LET ME TELL YOU AGAIN !!!

    YOU WRONG!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!!

The book “A Winner Within” is NOTBill Parcells book. It is Pat Riley’s. He used the “game theory” ideas, abstractly put together by a famous mathematician in 1940, to help motivate and inspire his Lakers and Knicks team.

Keep your helmet on buddy!!! No one listens to you.

  23. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

You are absolutely right, I read both of them and got the two confused. The Parcells book was called “Finding a Way to Win”. One can obviously see how that mistake can be made. I was in the ballpark, and my point was not the title of the book but the contents of it.

You and your father dont listen to me because I regularly refute your basic lack of general football knowledge and crackpot thoughts with real football experience from both playing and coaching. You cant hold a candle to the experience that I have and I dont back down to your rambling and abandoning your point when proven wrong.

At least Ive strapped a helmet on, don’t talk like a tough guy with your pencil pushing geek view of football…

  29. avatar Brad says:

Come on guys. I understand since the 3-0 start the season has been a letdown, but take a step back and look at the team for a second. No matter what the results have been, this is a VERY GOOD football team. The Defense is an elite one, the o-line and running game is the class of the league, and the passing game is a developing weapon. The coaching has been choppy at times, but I have faith in this regime.

Lets shed that “same old jets” fan base mentality and go into this second half ready to watch a VERY GOOD football team try to make the playoffs. I really do think there will be days in the near future that i’ll be able to refer to this team as GREAT.

  30. avatar Jetski says:

I actually forgive Rex for not replacing Schotty with Callahan because one of my cousin’s closest friends works for the Jets and claims that Rex would love to remove Schotty but Tanny will not allow him to do so…Actually, Tanny told Rex when he interviewed for the job that Rex had to give Schotty carte blanche on offense or he would not be hired!!!!!!!!! Supposedly, Mangini wanted Schotty out as well but Tanny nixed the idea..Mangini then began scripting the opening drives of every game on the offense and Schotty didn’t like it because Mangini’s game plan would actually work and then Schotty would go on to lay an egg on offense…Tanny protects Schotty because of Marty…Tanny even wanted Schotty to be the head coach over Rex Ryan but was afraid of negative reaction from the fans and bad press from the media…Tanny claimed that Schotty had this amazing interview which was gonna be Tanny’s lame excuse for hiring Schotty…

  31. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Wow… Always entertaining to see Fonzie searching to old quotes to prove how much of a Jet hater fan he is….

The Eddie/Fonzie debate was an enjoyable read…lol

  32. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Brad, you are what your record says you are.

They are a mediocre football team until proven otherwise.

Are things looking up? Perhaps, all depends on whethar the QB begins to sink or swim, he is treading water right now, as should have been expected.

Defense elite? Perhaps, I would call it very good.

They have allowed big drives in big spots costing Jets two games, elite defenses win those games.

O-Line and Running game “class of the league”? A bit over the top dontcha think?

Good, but hardly the class of the league. See Vikings, Minnesota for the class of the league.

Passing game developing weapon? Quite possibly, its up the QB as stated above.

I get the point, you are against the negativity and the ebb and flow of emotions of fellow Jets fans, but it is entirely possible that you are a bit more optimistic than is warranted.

There are good signs, but to ignore the bad signs is green kool aid drinking.

  33. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

btw, basset, great assessement of Bart Scott’s quote.

How many Super Bowls has Bart Scott won without Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrel Suggs?

Someone should ask Bart Scott why, if the Ravens have such a winning culture and the Jets a losing culture, to explain why, despite having those advantages in talent over the Jets for the last few years, the Ravens have averaged only 8.7 wins during Scotts seven year career with that team, while the Jets have averaged 7.4 wins during the same period?

And if there is such a winning culture in BAL why are they sitting at 4-3?

He is just full of crap, a slightly better than mediocre player with an all pro mouth, dont need him to tell me how to act as a fan.

We would be better off with Jonathan Vilma.

  34. avatar Brendan says:

    WOJF,

What? “slighty better than mediocre”? While I respect the fact people don’t appreciate his trash talk, it’s not for everyone I understand, that is a bit harsh. He’s been an all-pro and did the dirty work so Ray Lewis could make the plays. Look at David Harris’ stat line. Pretty impressive isn’t it? Yeah, never happens without Scott taking on lead blockers the majority of the time and spilling the plays towards Harris. Scott is a very good player and one of the unquestioned leaders on this team.

  35. avatar Fonzie says:

    Brendan:

You said “Look at David Harris’ stat line. Pretty impressive isn’t it? Yeah, never happens without Scott taking on lead blockers the majority of the time and spilling the plays towards Harris”

    Are you serious?

Strongly suggest you go back and take a look at DH stats his first year, BEFORE HIS INJURIES. He was TWICE as good as Vilma, with HALF the Games!!!!

Whys do you think Tannenbaum allowed to $ave $$$$ and give Vilma away !!!

  36. avatar Kyle says:

Trading Vilma was a power play. We lost. We also lost out on Trusnik who has 2 sacks with the Browns already proving he is twice the player Gholston is.

  37. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

The Jets need to sign a better punter before the second half of the season.

  38. avatar Fonzie says:

    Kyle:

You’re right, but do you think the koolaide drinkers will admit to any of that, AND MUCH MORE? No way !!!! But, they’ll see.

    Brendan:

You are soooo wrong in so many ways I don’t know where to start.

Just let me tell you two thinggs:

    1) Ray Lewis is , has been and, will to be teice the player that Scott is and the Ravens (WHOLE TEAM) heart and soul from day one, and WITHOUT Sott !!!

    2) David Harris (healthy) is, has been, and will be twice the player that Scott is….WITHOUT THE MOUTH !!!!

  39. avatar Kyle says:

Let’s not start hating on Scott.

Name one TE that had more than 5 catches on us this season. You can’t.

Last year, every TE we played smoked us because neither Harris or Barton were even average in coverage. Scott has done a great job stopping the TE and occupying guards this season.

  40. avatar Fonzie says:

    Kyle:

I don’t hate Scott, Just hate his BIG MOUTH !!

And to say that Scott should receive credit for Lewis outstanding years with Balt. and Harris’play when healthy is not only misleading but unfair !!!

I’ll stand by what I said, the play of both Lewis AND Harris stand by themselves regarldess of Scott !!!

  41. avatar Kyle says:

Agreed, but Harris would have a he’ll of a harder time without Scott next to him. You are responsible for your own level of play, but when your teammates are doing what they are supposed to do, it makes life a lit easier for you.

Harris stunk last year with Barton next to Jon because Harris had to make up for Barto’s lack of strength, speed, and coverage skills

  42. avatar Ed the Teacher in FLA says:

I think the Jets will go 7-1 the rest of the way… We’ve been in every game, and it’s bound come together after the bye.

I think we will win the AFC EAST with an 11-5 record, New England will finish 10-6, Miami will finish 9-7.

It’s not uncommon for a team to get on a good run… I think the Jets are about to embark on one. Coach Ryan mentioned something telling, about the year that the Raiders made the playoffs after starting off 4-4. You see every season some team was 2-4 or 2-5 at one point of the season and turned it on… Why can’t that be the Jets.

This is the playoff picture as of today…
    IND 7-0, DEN 6-1, CIN 5-2, PIT 5-2, NE 5-2, HOU 5-3, BAL 5-3, SD 4-3, NYJ 4-4 & MIA 3-4.

I predict the final standings will be:

    1. AFC NORTH
PIT (13-3) w/ wins against DEN, CIN, KC, BAL, OAK, CLE, BAL and MIA, w/ a lose against GB

    2. AFC SOUTH
IND (13-3) w/ wins against HOU, NE, BAL, DEN, BUF and JAX w/ loses against HOU, TEN, NYJ

    3. AFC EAST
NYJ (11-5) w/ wins against JAX, NE, CAR, BUF, TB, IND and CIN w/ lose against ATL

    4. AFC WEST
SD (11-5) w/ wins against DEN, KC, CLE, DAL, CIN, TEN, WAS and loses against NYG and PHI

    5. WILDCARD #1
NE (10-6) w/ wins against MIA, CAR, BUF, JAX, HOU w/ loses against IND, NYJ, NO and MIA.

    6. WILDCARD # 2
DEN (10-6) w/ wins against WAS, KC, OAK and KC and loses against PIT, SD, NYG, IND and PHI

    Outside looking in:

    BAL 9-7
    MIA 9-7
    HOU 7-9
    CIN 8-8

  43. avatar Brendan says:

    Fonzie,

I’m wrong in so many ways? First, learn to properly construct a sentence so I can understand your points.

“1) Ray Lewis is , has been and, will to be teice the player that Scott is and the Ravens (WHOLE TEAM) heart and soul from day one, and WITHOUT Sott !!!” is not a sentence.

I am not questioning Ray Lewis being the heart of the defense. Or that he is a great player. He is not twice the player Scott is, since he couldn’t be the player he has been for so long without Scott’s help.

“Strongly suggest you go back and take a look at DH stats his first year, BEFORE HIS INJURIES. He was TWICE as good as Vilma, with HALF the Games!!!!”

Not sure what your point is here. He replaced Vilma, but I never brought up Vilma. He was playing with a run of the mill guy in Eric barton, who had a whopping 33 tackles and 2 sacks playing next to Harris for 8 games.

Now Harris plays alongside a playmaker, lowering the pressure on him to make plays (on a better defense so they see a lot less plays) and Scott has 51 tackles and a sack (in about 30% less plays)

I’m not sure if you wanted to point out Harris doing more without Scott there, but that’d be because he HAD to do everything, Barton was not good.

“And to say that Scott should receive credit for Lewis outstanding years with Balt. and Harris’play when healthy is not only misleading but unfair !!!”

That is just wrong. Flat out. Do you understand the concept of the 3-4 ILB’s? One guy has the responsibility of filling the hole, taking on the lead blocker, and spilling the runner towards the other. The other guy’s job is merely make the tackle. Scott is guy #1. He is one of the best, if not the best, at doing this for 3-4 ILB’s and he does it without complaining about his stats, or using it as a crutch. He does the dirty work. He also covers TE’s and RB’s (who haven’t done much against us passing-wise). With an average ILB next to Harris, Harris is most likely going to have to man Scott’s job, and he’d have a stat line resembling Scott’s.

Harris is, was, and always will be (notice how to structure that sentence?) twice the player Scott is? Really? I love Harris, think he is on the cusp of being a bonafide superstar LB in this league, but he has never been an All-Pro.

  44. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Brendan,
He doesnt understand the concept of the 3-4. What you illustrated with Bart Scott covering the TE and RB’s was perfect. It absolutely explains the disparity between the two’s statline. I give you alot of credit about the stuff you come up with. You undoubtley played football at some level and have a great understanding of the game. Plus I like anything that dispells Fonzie’s attempt at self loathing Jet hatred

  45. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Reading that quote from The Mouth again, if I were a veteran Jet I would walk into the locker room when they return and punch him in his big mouth for calling me a loser, because that’s what he just did.

He called the entire organization, coaches, front office and players, losers.

How the export does he get away with this crap? Oh yeah, he’s a great quote, so the media slobber all over him instead of confronting his inane assertions.

You can debate all you want about his talent level, but he is a jerk, plain and simple.

If he wants to learn about winning he just needs to watch the parade on Friday.

No trash talkers in that clubhouse, gentlemen, professionals, going out every day and doing their job dealing with the media in a friendly, professional matter, complementing their opponents.

Its called sportsmanship, and requires class.

  46. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

David Harris almost led the league in tackles in his rookie season despite not starting until Vilma got hurt.

To attribute his play to Scott is patently absurd, Scott is doing what he is supposed to, well I am very pleased, he is getting paid enough after all.

Harris’ stats were poor last year because A) he missed a bunch of games, tough to get tackles from the bench and B) he was not fully recovered when he returned.

The decline in opponents TE and and RB reception has as much to do with the scheme and the improvements in the secondary as it does the almighty presence of Bart Scott.

Scott is very good at what he does, no doubt, and is certainly contributing but the defensive improvement has plenty to do with his teammates and coaches, many of whom he just labeled as losers.

  47. avatar Kyle says:

    The Jets are obviously losers.

How else do you explain a team with the best running game and second best defense going 4-4?

The Jets always find a way to lose the game. It is in their culture.

Scott is going to help change the attitude.

  48. avatar Brendan says:

    WOJF,

Where does Bart call anyone a loser? Losing culture isn’t calling them a loser. It’s calling out fans like Hank and Fonzie, who are always thinking negatively, always expecting to fail. You can’t have a winning organization without the mindset that you’re always going to win.

And I’m glad he’s a jerk. I don’t want a choirboy leading my defense. Football isn’t baseball. It’s not a “gentleman’s game”. It’s a physical, violent, testosterone pulsing game where mean, brutal competitors thrive.

To attribute Harris’ play to Scott is not absurd at all. I don’t know why this is so hard to understand, but in a 3-4 the ILB’s work a 2-man game. It’s designed so that one gets more of the numbers. If you took Scott out and put in, say, Justin Trusnik, then Harris’ numbers might look nicer, but that’d only be because they were on the field longer and he had to make more plays. Scott makes Harris freer, more able to blitz and do the things that make him special. If Scott couldn’t cover a TE, RB, take on a pulling guard or a FB, then Harris would have to and that’d take away from his playmaking abilities/opportunities.

I am not saying anything about Harris’ year last season. I was speaking about 2 years ago when he stepped in for Vilma. Yes, he almost led the league in tackles that year, but he also had 41 tackles in two games.

And I never said the defense is great because of just Scott. I am merely taking exception to someone calling him “a slightly better than mediocre player” or saying that he does nothing to benefit his LB mate (as fonzie said, not you). The guy is a top tier LB, makes tough plays, and does the dirty work that makes this defense go.

    Wise Old Jet Fan/Kyle:

You see, the problem with fans like Brendan and others on this blog, is that just like battered wives, refuse to acknowledge their condition for fear they may lose their “loved one(s)” and fear of feeling additional pain.

This is why they will always strike out at those that are trying to help them. This phenomenon is know as “Batterd Wives Syndrome” and it is obvious to others except to themselves.

PS. And Brendan, this is a sports blog, NOT a Pulitzer Prize Journalistic site. You are so silly with your grammar !!!

  50. avatar Brendan says:

    Fonzie,

I find it classless that you compare sports fanship to something as serious as domestic violence. Poor taste.

And just because I disagree with you, doesn’t mean I’m refusing to acknowledge something. In fact, I’m willing to bet most people that have football knowledge would agree that Scott is a vital part of this defense and will support most of what I have said.

And you must have skipped over Kyle’s last statement: “Scott is going to help change the attitude.” He is either being sarcastic (which is tough to pick up on in text) or he is saying guys like Scott are the kind of players that will stop the roller-coaster ride of inconsistency that this team exhibits on a year-to-year basis.

While you love to bash this team, you never really have anything that backs it up. You just say outlandish and critical statements on a whim, as if your football instincts are the end-all be-all of sports fanship and everyone should follow suit.

  51. avatar AKA...Drew says:

If I am not mistaken i think Fonzie just said I am just like a battered wife…

So if I understand…. I am the woman getting beat….the Jets are the drunken husband and fonzie is the friend or authority trying to help me out?

You just cant make this stuff up…. This guy is fantastic!!

  52. avatar Fonzie says:

    Brendan:

    “…….:fanship…..”

    Fanship? Did you say FANSHIP?

What FANSHIP are you talking about? Have you read some of the comments lately?

And you have the unmitigated gall to mention class !!!

Ps. And didn’t you just say that there is no “class” in football?

  53. avatar Brendan says:

    Fonzie,

No, I did not just say there is no class in football. I said that this isn’t a “gentleman’s game” and I don’t want choirboys, but I never said there’s no class in the game. I also don’t consider you part of football, nor do I consider myself part of it. A fan of it, yes, but we’re not involved in the sport itself. So, yes, I have the “gall” to mention class when you compare fans of a sporting team to women who have a legitimate mental condition that revolves around them being physically assaulted by men. Sorry I’m so out of line to even bring up class when you do something like that.

As for fanship, yes I’ve read some of the comments. There are some great, great Jets fans that post here. And I’m not only referring to the ones I agree with. I disagree with more people than I agree with on this blog, but it’s in an intelligent debate where both sides make at least a few solid points.

You’re questioning me on fanship? Have you ever written a positive post on here? Or is it all “SOJ” this and “______ sucks” that? You shouldn’t be a fan of something so you can solely rip into it and complain and whine about it on a daily basis. Fans such as yourself that constantly criticize and degrade it’s own team are the reason “SOJ” still even gets talked about.

I’m not saying you can’t be critical of your own teams. Hell, I’m a Mets, Knicks & Rangers fan. Being critical is in the job of being fans of those teams (Jets, too), but there’s a difference between purposely critical, and being critical just for the sake of being negative.

  54. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Fonzie,

Don’t you ever get tired of complaining? Now i’m sure you’re going to tell me that you are tired of seeing the Jets lose, which we all are. But how can you explain your attitude having any sort of positive effect on anything? Does it make you feel better to bash the players, coaching staff, front office etc. ? I feel the pain too man, I hate seeing the Jets lose and I would do anything to see this team win a super bowl. But i’m also patient, and I also understand that these things take time, and trial and error. You have to take the bad with the good and vice versa. All i’m saying is, everyone here (for the most part) has the same intentions, we all want the Jets to be successful and that is our common goal. But for you to continuously criticize the players and the coaches and even us, the fans, is offensive to a lot of us. I can’t stop you from voicing your opinion or change it for that matter, but atleast understand that you are not helping anyone by being so negative and pessimistic.

  55. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Not to go all crazy over this but I maintain that, as a player in the locker room, that quote would piss me off.

He essentially is saying that only about 10-15 players believe they can win (and I think he means the defense) then he essentially calling the other players losers.

I would be getting tired of his mouth if I was lucky enough to be playing for this team ,especially if I were Faneca or Jones or Woody, who know a little something about winning in the NFL.

I would tell him, and Kerry Rhodes, to shut up and play football.

  56. avatar Brendan says:

Agree to disagree WOJF. I respect what you’re saying, I just have a different opinion on how I would take that. I think that 15-20 number was completely off the top of his head. I don’t think he’s calling out any other units of the team.

He’s not a dumb guy, he’s actually quite intelligent and he knows that alienating his teammates, effectively losing their support, would destroy the team. He’s know he is a leader for the team and I think he was just trying to get everyone to stop the violins for a moment and realize that their complaining and doom-and-gloom mindsets prevent the organization from turning a corner. We need everyone on board, even Hank & Fonzie.

Oh and speaking of the dynamic duo of dribble, read this article on your wonderboy Mangini:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AuVQxrqHuZv2S8j.UEywxe85nYcB?slug=cr-brownslerner110509&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Seems us “wagoneers” aren’t the only ones who think like this. And Charles Robinson is about as unbiased and solid in reporting the NFL as anyone, so don’t use your media crutch this time, Hank.

  57. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Fonzie,

Couple more things to add as I’ve seen you’ve crawled back in under your rock after I gave you an internet spanking for running your mouth.

What shatters your credibility is the fact that all your statements completely ignore anything positive the Jets do. Its always “Bart Scott has a big mouth and is a mediocre, at best ,linebacker” or “Sanchez vs the Dolphins was completely ineffective without the running game” (how that makes sense is beyond me but he actually said it).

You fail to acknowledge anything that happens to work out for the Jets. Its all bad, all the time. As a fan, I dont see how you can completely ignore the good part. This is why people question your fanship and sanity. Ive come to grips with the fact that you will never change, your attitude towards the Jets is heritability ingrained in you. But I come after you and others like you because like Brendan said, you are the kind of fans people think of when “SOJ” rears its ugly head. The doomsday, pessimistic wackos that think that this team is still drafting guys like Blair Thomas and Johnny L Jones.
You live in the past, longing for the gentler days of Eric Mangini. You know what, Eric Mangini is a soft, fat, wimp of a coach. He had one good year against a soft schedule. They snuck up on people and got a few breaks to wind up 10-6 instead of 6-10. Once people paid attention he was done. His methods and personality sealed his fate. He, like you, was as stubborn as they come. He did the worst thing a coach could ever do, he LOST HIS TEAM. Thats why he got fired. No media, no kool-aid drinking battered wife Jet fans like me, his team said “YOU SUCK AND WE AINT PLAYIN FOR U NO MO’” Get over it. He sucked, his new team sucks, and he aint going to make it another season in Cleveland.
If you like that go root for the Browns, no one here is stopping you. How bout the Fish? They are local for you and you seem to love to tell everyone on here how good they are. If not man up and get behind your team. Losses happen in football, you get knocked down, you get back up. You dont lay there, piss and moan, make excuses and point the finger. Stop talking about these guys like they are trained zoo animals. They are human and make mistakes. Bart Scott’s sole purpose on this earth is not to say things that make Fonzie Hank/naples happy. But next time before you start with the same old jets stuff, just realize that the crap you perpetrate on here is exactly what people are talking about with regards to SOJ. I cant blame you for the results on the field, but the stigma regarding Jet fans has been tarnished by guys like you, not the guys who hope against hope but are willing to take the heartache and ridicule of SOJ, because they want to see them win that badly.

But since you seem incapable of self-evaluation or humility, this post was probably a waste of time but it did feel good to get that out

  58. avatar hank/naples says:

    Brendan:

This guy writes about Mangini that..” He simply took the respect and credit which the media and NFL establishment was so eager to give him. You can’t blame him for that, particularly when he has remained the same coach in Cleveland that he was in New York’

This guy Robinson has to be kidding, right? He has to be Joking or else he is delusional !!

And you give him credibility? This argument is closed! END OF STORY.

  59. avatar James in TN says:

Hey , let’s quit bashing other Jet Fans. Instead let’s bash Schotty because he is an incompetent f@#$.

    Ahh, that felt better.

Go JETS beat the BYE’s a$$!!!!!

Next year we win the AFC East and host a playoff game in the Meadowlands.

  60. avatar Brendan says:

“The LB tandem of David Harris and Scott is fast becoming the best duo in the league. Harris, making a push for his first Pro Bowl, has a team-leading 76 tackles by coaches’ breakdown, leads the Jets with 3.5 sacks and has a forced fumble and an interception.

The “Madbacker” has become an outspoken leader in his first year since coming over from the Ravens along with Douglas and Leonhard. Scott is second on the team with 59 tackles and leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss/no gain.”
