Gamethread: Bye Week Edition
Posted on November 8th, 2009 by Bassett

With the Jets free this weekend, we’re opening up the posts for today’s game to whatever games / topics you want to talk about. Dare you root for the Dolphins today? Who needs to stop their torrid pace from the first half for the Jets to catch up? What are you looking for from this Jets team between now and January?

Ive been trying to decide who to root for in this one. I’m gonna have to go for New England. I don’t wanna have to chase two teams in our division and that would be the case if Miami wins. Not only that but these Dolphins are getting a little cocky after beating us twice. New England will put them in their place today.
For today’s games, we need the
1) Giants to beat the Chargers
2) The Pats to beat Miami.
3) IND to beat Houston
4)Ravens and Bengals idk..I’m leaning towards the Ravens because I think they’ll make the playoffs anyways, win or lose this game. So they might as well knock the Bengals back while they’re at it.
I am rooting for the Pats to beat Miami because I’m pissed about last week still. I don’t want to get too into “what we need to happen” because things can change massively between now and the final weeks. Mostly I’m rooting for my fantasy team plays and the games I wagered on.
On an unrelated note, I’m going to the game next week, it will be my first Jets game in ten years. I’ll be coming from Long Island with my dad. He suggested we take LIRR to Penn Station and then catch a shuttle bus from there. Can anyone tell me if this is a good option or if there’s a better way? Thanks
@Elliot
I agree. Before this year, it would be a no contest decision that I would root for the fins. But with how cocky and arrogant that team has gotten and the continued disrespect they show this team, I’m rooting for the Pats.
What a weekend. No game (maybe that’s just as well) and rooting for the Giants and Patriots!
Ronnie, you’re right about everything EXCEPT we really need the Fins to beat New England. It helps us in our playoff hunt, and I’ll you right now that as a 20 year old fan, the younger generation couldn’t care less about Miami. We hate the Patriots and only the Patriots. The Dolphins are, if anything, just a biannual annoyance.
Also, I’d rather Cincy beat Baltimore, as they’re already up one game on them, and for Denver, the obvious division winner in the west, to beat Pittsburgh. Because, let’s face it guys, it’s not too soon to start watching other games for wild card implications.
Maxx
I’m looking at this playoff wise. I dont care who I hate or not.
If the Dolphins win, its a 3 team race for BOTH the division and wildcard.
If the Pats win, its basically a 2 team race. Not only that, we have a very winnable game next week (vs the Jags) and the Pats have a very losable game next week (@ Ind).
If NE wins this week and lose next week with us beating the Jags next week, will set up a 1st place showdown in 2 weeks at Foxborough (Where we play well).
That’s actually a pretty good point. Given the Patriots’ upcoming schedule (Colts, us, Saints at some point), they’d remain catchable even with a win today. It mostly all comes down to whether we can beat them again or not.
And, yes, I’d love to see Miami fall out of the race entirely.
ronnie,
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
We need to assume that we beat NE in a few weeks and we own the tie breaker with them.
We lost twice to Miami, and we assume we are either tied for first place with the PATS or going for a WC.
We need the CHargers to start losing, Houston to start losing, Pittsburgh, and Balt to start losing. If we can stay ahead of those 4 teams and then with some luck be tied at the end of the year with NE we are in the playoffs no matter what!
I looked at our schedule:
We need to win the next 5:
JAX
CAR
NE
BUFF
TB (not in order)
then we have ATL, IND, CIN (we need to win 2 of 3) and go 11-5 to have a chance.
We really blew it in those last 5 games. We should have won 4-5 instead of lose 4 of 5.
We are still in it though. Football starts in NOV.
ne does not look like ne they look very beatable they don,t scare me anymore though the jets need to be quiet because everybody wants to beat us when we talk only the jets could beat the jets
Seems like Baltimore is really missing Ryan. Their defense has struggled lately and the Bengals are shredding them for the second time this season.
Please — enough about the Fins needing to beat the Pats. If the Dolphins beat the Pats in NE, you find me another loss on their schedule. I’m not saying they will go 12-4, but you can’t count the Steelers at home or NE at home as a loss, especially if they can win this game. Even IF they lose BOTH of those home games they are 10-6 and the Jets would have to be 11-5 to beat them. It’s moronic to root for the Fins vs the Pats today, unless you are conceding the division to Miami (last year’s division winner, mind you).
We need the Pats to win, since they have a MUCH tougher schedule and then if we beat them (which we need to do anyway to win the division over either team), we will be ahead of them too.
Remember: if the Dolphins win today, they will have sole possession of 1st place over us, if they lose and the Pats lose AT Indy, we play for sole possession and control our own destiny.
And I know that you guys came around on this thread but the previous thread had (mostly) people rooting for the Dolphins.
we need Pats to win and Brady to tweak his leg
The Jets need to go 6 – 3 or better Simple as that
Damn It come on Colts. You need to beat the Texans. We need you to beat the Texans
ginn jr only plays good agansit the jets you see how trash talking wakes up the other teamhe missed a easy pass but im glad ne will lose some games anyway they wont beat no or the colts.we should control our destiny but im thinking 8/0
Anyone see Ted Ginn just drop a wide open pass on 4th down late in the 4th? This is why I still hold out hope. The Jets were snakebitten by this mutt, and the Phins arent making a run, they stink. The Jets gave them an early Christmas present, TWICE!!!
How about Josh Freeman? He is schooling Sanchez and Stafford.
with our luck this josh freeman guy may get tampa first win we have to play them but green bay has no defense but that game wont be a give me
Tyrone,
I was just going to say the same thing….
I like Sanchez, but this guy is very good. I was high on him this draft, and the Jets could have traded up higher than TB to get him and have given up less…although..we really didnt give up a lot for Sanchez..just Manginis defensive players.
tyrone,.,
GB has a good Defense..they have no Oline
I think if you look historically…every year the team with teh 2nd best D and best running game should be better than 4-4 and 1-3 in the division and makes the playoffs by the end of the year…
We have a ridiculous run game and a very good Defense..
My opinion? our team including the coaches need to stop talking crap and just win games.
Good 1PM for the Jets with the Ravens, Fins and Texans all losing. You wanted the Fins t lose because they have the tiebreaker over the Jets so you always have to keep them behind you. You still control your situation with the Pats. You don’t with the Fins.
Need the Gianst to win at 4 and it would help if the Broncos beat the Steelers tomorrow night snd give them a third loss.
We blew three games to sub par teams in the last few plays of the games. We are much better then what our records shows and I’m sure we will get things situated over our bye week. I think we will come out and make some noise given all our units decide to play there best together. You won’t hear me say it often, but Lets Go Giants.
So Josh Freeman has pumped some life into an m.i.a. franchise in Tampa. Our scouting department under Tannenbaum seems to have a great sense for talent having shown interest in Freeman and Percy Harvin.
HA! HA! where are the fins fans at thats what i thought,BUMS! besides that we had some games go our way today, think ill go crash some dolphins blogs
kd bart
I agree with you.
The 1:00 games was perfect.
Now we need the Giants over the chargers.
Updated Playoff Standings:
Colts
Broncos
Bengals
Patriats
___________________
Steelers 5-2
Chargers 4-3
Texans 5-4
Jets 4-4
Ravens 4-4
Jaguars 4-4
Next week big games:
Jets vs Jags
Pats @ Ind
SD vs Phi
Cin vs Pit
All those games are basically toss ups.
The Texans have the Bye and the Ravens have an easy win over the Browns.
if the jets lose next week the season is over
I am not concerned with our division foes. I am concerned that we can,t put away teams because we can’t score enough. That is why we lost to the Bills and Dolphins in recent weeks. You can’t depend on your defense and special teams on every play. That is what the Jets do too often.
Concur………….We need a packed house next week……..It is a “must win” game!!!!……….Simple plan on defense, stop Jones-Drew……….Let’s run it 60% of the time and have a nice 15/24 for 200 yds 2 TDs from Sanchez…….A TD each for Cotchery and Keller……No turnovers……..A run TD for Jones………24-17, Jets………….would be nice…………
Yeah, Freeman looks a lot like Sanchez did against Houston. Lets hope Freeman-Jets looks like Sanchez-New Orleans.
I love the speculation, its what keeps football interesting even when your team is average.
Honestly, though, all I want to see is Sanchez and Ryan get better overall from game to game, everything else is gravy.
of course the gmen dont help the jets… they look awful
Wow, talk about conservative. Tom Caughlin with bad play calls at the end of the 4th quarter and kudos to Turner for taking those timeouts.
But overall, it was a positive day for the Jets
And Stafford just threw his 5th interception.
I guess last years 1st rounders are known for making the playoffs as rookies, this years are known for throwing 5 Int’s in a game.
giants loose a game they should of won conservertive is not good when you could loose by 1 pt ny teams trust their defenses to much well at least the focus in ny is on the giants not the jets they always justify the giants and they always punish the jets so good lets see what they going to say now
Looks like we will have to compete with Cincy,Balt, and SD for the 2 WC spots.
Yep. The Giants screw up the Jets’ perfect Sunday. Only consolation, the Giants will take all of the heat from the media this week. Maybe they’ll all realize that the Giants were 5-0 based on a schedule of the Skins, Bucs, Chiefs and Raiders. If it weren’t for Tony Romo’s four interceptions, they would’ve also loss at Dallas.
I’ll enjoy listening to Fat ass Francesca rant about his G-men tomorrow
Not for nothing, but this Walt Anderson referee guy is a joke. He called a holding penalty on the goal-line against the Giants. The guy did the same thing to Hartstock and the Jets in the Bills game, when the Jets had the GW FG in OT.
This guy decides critical moments in a football game. If you are going to throw the flag in that situation it better be SO obvious and blatant. You let the players decide the outcome of the game. I guess my point is holding is one of those things in the trenches that happens on every play, dont wait til the potential outcome of the game can be decided to start throwing laundry. The only thing I dont like about the NFL is that the referees have way to much influence over who wins and loses
Also thanks for playing for the 3 Coughlin, could have gone for the jugular
He will get ripped on monday
Good day for the Jets. And, the G-Men losing their 4th in a row was sweet, too. I’m tired about how the Giants do everything right and the Jets do everything wrong. This was an inexcusable loss for the Giants.
As for Pats-Fins, there is a generational divide among Jets fans. I hate the Fins and the Fins have to get to 8 losses to take them out of the playoff race. If the Jets take care of business and beat the Pats twice, the Jets will have an outside chance of winning the division. Pats still have to play on the road against the Colts, Saints and Texans. There is a chance that in 2 weeks in Foxboro, the Jets could have the AFC East lead. Now, that would be something!
i think i hate the dolphins more cause they always talk crap but never make the playoffs…at least the pats dont really talk that much but if they do at least they back it up….but out of both teams i really hate belicheck then a close 2nd is jason taylor
After what Jason Taylor said about the Jets and the Meadowlands i hate him more than BB
supercool,
What are you talking about??? Dolphins won the division last year (stole it from us and the pats) the last week of the season. Before their 1-15 season they were always competitive with us and the PATS.
Also talking crap? Who talks more than Bart Scott? He and Joey Porter can have a talk show with all the hot air that goes on. To be honest atleast Joey Porter was a pro bowler with a bunch of sacks under his belt. Scott has not proved his paycheck.
I am a huge fan, but I am also a realist. This guy has been nothing but a talking joke since he got paid. Put up or shut up. Look at Revis. Week after week he plays hard, TJ too. These guys dont talk smack but play on the field. The PATS have done that for years. THey shut people up on the field. Same with the Colts and Steelers. Those are well coached disciplined teams. We are chaotic from the coach down because he cant keep his mouth shut, and brought in a poor mans Joey Porter.
I am sick of this team right now, and like eveyr other year winning will solve everything, but I cannot stand the talking. I am a fan of disciplined and respectable sportsmanship. That is what we learn as kids and these grown overpaid kids do not respect that. That is why I cannot stand Kevin Garnett in basketball. He is a talking menace, and gives the wrong impression. Play hard on the field and at the end of the day shake the opponents hand.
My favorite player ever is Curtis Martin, but on defense I have always absolutely loved Brian Dawkins. Guys like that lead and put it all on the field. At the end of the day if you lose, you don’t start talking crap about the team that beat you. You congratulate them. Bart Scott talked about Miami twice after losses. He is garbage. Ray Lewis made him look like a pro bowler. he did the same thing with Adalius Thomas and now he is being benched in NE 2 weeks back. Once again we overpaid for players.
We did the same thing with Jenx. I love the guy, but we traded away 2 picks, and overpaid him for him to be hurt all the time. I am ranting here, so let me continue….
What has Kerry done since he got his extention? Not a thing. We traded away our best MLB I have ever seen in a Jet uniform in J Vilma. And I would love to see a 4-3 with him and Harris in the middle. B Thomas on the outside with someone like an Eric Barton (whom I loved).
Run and stop the run..that is how you win. That is what Miami is doing right now and Pitt has done for years.
We have the #1 running game and #2 defense (no thanks to Bart Scott) and we are 4-4. That is coaching. We lost games from turnovers (where we didn’t pull the rookie and give him a break). Instead we give him the playbook and try to destroy his confidence. We lost a game from special teams which is ridiculous. We lost 4 of 5 games we should have walked all over.
I am not sold on lovable Rex like everyone else. I am not sold on Bart Scott either. I am sold on Jim Leohnard though. We are 4-4 and should be 7-1. What are we going to do the next eight? We need to go 8-1 if we are going to make the playoffs!
correction on my 4-3…i meant Harris on the outside wtih Vilma in the middle and Thomas and Barton rotating on the other side..
We could have Poha and Devito at Tackle with Ellis and Pace (who was a down DE in college..like Gholston) on the line.
ca
last year was the first year in a while they made the playoffs they talk like they make it every year and this is the first year with bart scott’s talking
also jason taylor prob talks the most on that team and it just so happens the year he wasnt on the team was the year they made the playoffs
I’d have been happier if the Fish had beaten the Pats today. In any case, the Jets really cant afford to lose more than 1 game. I think the wild card is a tough road in the AFC and 10-6 will be a longshot to get a berth. Preferably our only loss goes to the Falcons. This is a longshot bc I’m not even sure the Pats will lose 3 more times.
CA who are you kidding? are you trying to convince us that Eric Barton is a better player than Bart Scott? and your not sold on rex? Our defense is rated #2 in the league for a reason. Do you not remember our secondary getting torn apart last year with mangini at the helm? Big Jinx blew out his knee because someone fell on him from behind that can happen to any player and you should wash your mouth out with soap for trying to rip that move apart.
CA
You have to be kidding me, Barton is not better than Scott, and Vilma did not fit Mangini’s system but Rex said he would have fit the system for Vilma if he had too, and Pace is not good in a 3 point stance, he’s a better rush LB, that’s why he wasn’t all that good in Arizona until they switched to a 3-4, and even though we lost Jinx, we still have Rex, with his genius schemes, we are good. Oh and Scott did make the pro Bowl, when Ray Lewis was injured so I don’t know how Ray Lewis made him look good, and Really Bart made Ray look good, Bart always played the Ted or Will LB, and Ray was the Mike, and even right now majority of the time, Harris is the Mike, and I really don’t care if the our Team talks too much as long as they win, which they haven’t ofcourse, but your acting as if the season is over, the season is only half finish so chill out a bit
CA,
You obviously never saw Bart Scott take over for Ray Lewis when he went down with an injury a few years ago or the year he made the Pro Bowl and had 10 sacks and 100 tackles. Or the year he almost KILLED Big Ben.
The reason you dont see Bart Scott making huge plays is because he does the dirty work in the 3-4 for DH. He takes on the blocks so DH can clean up on the ball carrier. Also Bart rarely gets a chance to rush the passer, because he SHUTS DOWN the TE or back out of the backfield. Remember Gates, Tony Scheffler, Ben Watson who KILLED the Jets all last year with Mangini, notice how TE’s dont have huge games against us.
I think you are being unfair because you are expecting LT numbers but that is not Scott’s role in Rex’s D. He is the best guy at what his role is in Rex’s D. He also is extremely intelligent, honest guy. I dont know what the big deal is about all this “talk”. You never hear him say “Im the best linebacker in football”. He gives his honest opinion about other teams and the majority of the time his opinion is pretty justifiable. He doesnt pull punches. You have gotten too used to Mangini’s era of secrecy and blandness. This isnt baseball, where you dont show people up, football is a brutal game of collisions where the meanest and most physical often reign supreme.
You shouldnt be sold on Rex yet, its too early to say either way. The only things for sure is the man is one of the top five defensive minds on the planet Earth, his team plays their balls off for him, and he needs to work on a few game-management skills. Mangini was Mangenious after year 1. Now the guy is hanging onto the Browns job by his huge belt on his waist 52 pants…
CA, what are you talking about? this defense wouldn’t be what it is now without Bart Scott and Rex Ryan. and up until Jenkins got injured he was hands down one of the best DT in the league if not THE best and im serious about that. plus we were in desperate need of a DT and i KNOW you weren’t sold on Dewayne Robertson..Jenks has done nothing but make plays for this team.
CA,
Read the 4 comments above….
Go Jets!
Another Austin Miles TD…. Tannenbaum must have a crystal ball man he is doing a great job and its a shame we couldn’t steal this kid from Dallas when we tried over the summer
I dont know about you guys, but it seems CA is bitter. Perhaps he misses Harmful Edwards and Terrible Badway heading the front office??
im happy today if we beat jax and indy beats ne were playing for first place the next week vs ne
How about those Dolphins BWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
Love watching them lose.
Go Broncos tonight!!!
We can pull this out. I am drinking the koolaid once again, I mean heck what else is there?
Go JETS!!!!!!!!
I hated losing Vilma, but Barton was a joke.
Vilma>Bart
Bart>Barton
Rex>Mangini
Mangini>Kotite
We are better off now than in years past.
Go Jets!!!!
CA – I here a lot of what you’re saying.
Losing Vilma was a huge mistake. Jenkins disappeared after game 8 or 9 last year. Disappeared earlier this year for injury reasons. Rhodes terribly inconsistent.
The Jets are playing up to their capabilities as a .500 team. Most likely will finish the season at 8-8. I’ll take it so long as they keep building, but their history suggests otherwise. I’ll believe in Rex when he gets us to the bowl.
WW85 — the Pats may lose their next 3 games, let alone 3 more the rest of the season. I can’t find another sure loss on the Dolphins schedule. This was a big loss to get them behind us in the standings. Pats have two undefeated teams and the Jets coming up (a game we must win to win the division since we have 3 East losses already)
greg sec 130:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news greg, but if you’re waiting for NE to lose 3 straight, I suggest you sit down because you’ll be waiting a LOOONG time. The Pats have won consistently, almost at a 70% clip where the Jets have been under 50%.
Also, say NE does lose the next three, the Jets will have to go 7-1with ATL,IND,and CIN ahead and TB which can very possibly be a TRAP game.
Plus, don’t forget that we still have to go to BUFFALO where we historically DO NOT play well.
So, I hate to say it again, DO NOT wish for NE to BEAT the ‘Phins, you may get it.
greg:
“The Pats have won consistently, almost at a 70% clip where the Jets have been under 50%”…… That is the last 8-10 years.
Hank,
We play Buffalo in Toronto this year, in a dome. Home-field is pretty much negated when they do that.
CA JET FAN:
You see, MOST Jet fans today are so drunk with the Green Koolaide made by Rex, Scott and Rhodes and sold in barrells full by the Media that they can’t see the forrest through the trees!!.
What you said about Scott AND Rex mouthing off the winner after a painfull loss IS not only stupid but Low Class. DRUNK people are not able to recognize that !!
It is always only after they sober up that they realize what shmucks they’ve been !!!
San Diego’s win over the sinking Giants yesterday didnt give us much help for the wilcard race. For the Jets to have a shot they would have to play pretty much flawless football for the second half of the season. The AFC is pretty loaded and 10-6 may not be good enough for a playoff spot. If you look at the NFC, other than the Falcons and whoever finishes 2nd and 3rd in the NFC East, there really is no wild card race. The AFC is just the far superior conference which is going to hurt our chances.
Hank,
Some may drink the Kool-Aid, but you certainly drink the Hater-Aid, by the gallon.
Brendan:
You’re right, I forgot about that, it will make some diff.
However, don’t forget they always play us VERY TOUGH regardless, so it is NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, a auto W.
I agree, but their crowd gives them one of the only real home-field advantages in the NFL. Having that crowd diffused in Toronto and getting the game inside will benefit Sanchez. They needed him to have an epically bad rookie-game in order to beat us, so as long as he keeps it together this should be a win.
Let’s just make sure we win this Sunday……Nothing is more paramount…………….!!! This win will eliminate Jax from playoff picture and keep our season alive…….!!!! One game at a time!!!
Juseus:
See there you go again!!! I only speak out against loudmouths that have no class and costanly bashing players, coaches of personnell endlesly and unfairly !!
Jesus:
Sorry about the misspell.
Hank,
be optimistic, things could always be worse, we could have Mangini as our Head Coach.
ha ha ha ha
Vilma the best Jets MLB ever? How about Kyle Clifton, Marvin Jones, Stan Blinka, and Al Atkinson? And, IMO, both Scott and Harris are better. The difference between Vilma and these 6 guys? These guys see a hole open up in the middle, fill it and blast the RB. That was never Vilma’s finesse game, which I hated. Vilma=good riddance. I was tired of watching Willis McGahee bowl him over like a head pin.
Here is Hank at the beggining of the year:
hank/naples, on January 19th, 2009 at 8:35 pm Said:
“DRex is a great fit for our D. He was the only one that could’ ve replaced Mangini and the team not take a step backwards.”
Now Hank is the head of the Rex Ryan is a Goon Commitee.
Its funny how your rules and standards for being a “wagoneer” fan only applies to other Jet fans but not yourself. I love how this guy sits in his ivory tower telling everyone how to think about all his hypothetical and meaningless BS. Like others have said, you throw accusations about players and coaches on a whim and abandon your point when confronted with facts. You remind me of the guy in high school who got cut from the team, who loved to tell everyone how the team should be run but couldnt do it himself.
Its just sad knowing that the team I love to root for will be forever jinxed as long as self righteous, know-it-all, monday morning QB’s like Hank are associated with them
Jesus:
I generally optimistic. I NEVER had a doubt about Rex’s ability to form a solid D. I mean you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure tht out. One just has to look at his D stats the last ten years.
What I stongly have doubtsa bout is his demeanor and abilities as HEAD COACH, NOT DC.
This fear is compounded by his BIG MOUTH, lack of class and the arrogance to anyone on the field to ANYONE not wearing his colors.
Add to that his crude henchman Scott, and the fact that Franchez must do a ton of growing up as a NFL QB, and you’ll see where my feelings of SOJ are real !!!
Sorry guy, I just don’t swallow all the slanted garbage put out by the media!!!
Kyle Clifton was the best LB in Jets history. Bart doesn’t even facor in to the conversation. Harris is better than Scott. Scott so far is all talk like Rhodes. Harris however brings the pain to both RB and QB alike.
Scott is not all talk. 2nd on the team in tackles, and first in “holes-blown-the-F-up”. He takes on lead blockers to have Harris make plays. Anyone who thinks Scott does nothing doesn’t understand the premise of our defense.
James,
Did you mean MLB? Mo Lewis, Greg Buttle and Lance Mehl all were, IMO, better LB’s. I’ll agree that, overall, Clifton was the best, but when Marvin was healthy he could really put the hammer down and I always give a shout out to Stan Blinka, who could really hit, too.
By “best” I meant at MLB.
it’s painful to root for the broncos and equally would be painful to root for the steelers. i hate both teams with fairly equal passion. but not nearly half as much as i hate the fish, thank you patsies for taking care of them yesterday. unfortunately their season isn’t over yet; all this talk of ‘toughest schedule’ is way off.that’s last years standings and means nought. they have the same opponents as us with 2 exceptions. so even at 3-5 they’re not done, yet. i don’t like the patsies much either, but even their 3 SB’s still doesn’t make me forget that they’ll allways be just a little bit pathetic. pathetic patsies.. a soft touch. it’s too early to really start thinking about playoff scenarios etc. we just need to play all 3 phases in one 60 minute game and the wins will come. however the jags and panthers are teams we have struggled with and even in their present states, may cause us trouble again. we will play well at foxborough, may win, may lose… one thing is certain, we will beat the bucs, we allways do.
matt. biggest jets fan EVER IN LONDON. regards
