Audible: Taking a Gamble?
As all of us well know Mike Tannenbaum is known for being a gambling man (i.e. Favre, Edwards) and I’m beginning to wonder if the newly released Larry Johnson will be a priority if they decide to use Danny Woodhead primarily as a wide receiver rather than a running back. I know the baggage is a great amount but just combing through Tannenbaum’s past has got me thinking it wouldn’t be beyond Tanny to make such a move.

That being said I don’t encourage the move as I’d rather stick with what we have but I’m also no mind reader and cannot tell if the Jets will be comfortable with what they have. Ultimately, the front office should make the wise decision and leave this free agent alone. But I digress, how do you feel about the possibility?

He would be a beast behind this Oline………hmmm…..
I’m always a supporter of adding talent, Johnson would help contribute in the running game and maybe take even more pressure off Sanchez.
I’m not a huge fan of LJ, but hes a good back and i’m sure he will be productive with another team
****, i’d take him. TJ, LJ, and SG.
It wont take much to sign him, have him do it for the rest of the year. He’ll be on his best and play hard for a contract.
It can really only help, and if it doesn’t, who cares we have wayy to many leaders on this team for this dude to ruin any thing.
The guy is a cancer. Keep him out of our locker room. Jets sign him and I am done.
I don’t know guys…I don’t care how bad your OLine is I witnessed LJ get stuffed at the 1 yard line one too many times to think he is a good RB anymore.
please.
whats the point.
at 4-4 there is one goal the rest of this year — sanchez must improve.
dont waste time / media coverage with this clown.
let green get the reps.
no thanks, LJ.
Signing LJ does not seem like a good idea. The Jets already have two inside-the-tackles runners in Jones and Greene, so he would be more of the same. What the Jets need is someone to replace Washington, a guy who can make plays in the open field and can catch the ball out of the backfield. Woodhead seems to fit that description, but LJ definitely does not.
It’s probably not necessary, but I wouldnt be against it.
I’m sorry, but I just dont have faith in Woodhead to do much of anything for us.
woodhead couldn’t even contain the outside on kickoffs. the guy isn’t an NFL caliber player you all need to realize this and get off his junk.
LJ would be a low risk, high reward type player, and he only became a “cancer” this year. I would be too if i played for a team that has a golf player as my head coach and freakin’ matt cassel as my qb.
btw the term. “cancer” in the locker room is highly over used. any guy that has any problems with his team is considered a cancer and its just not true.
I hate my boss and you should hear all the smack I talk about him to my friends and the world. Does that make me a cancer at my place of work? No it doesn’t. LJ is no different.
I gotta agree with reefer. The Danny Woodhead obsession on this website is overblown beyond belief. I respect the guy for all he’s accomplished, but this is the NFL, and he doesnt have what it takes.
I’m sure my comments will offend some members of the Woodhead fan club, oh well.
These are the same guys who were all about Ratliff or Clemens for this year.
Johnson is slow and not that good anymore. Herm ran him into the ground.
lets just all pray tonight that the patriots dont swoop in and take lj…you saw what belicheck did with randy moss im sure he can get larry to do the same
lets no forget what belicheat did with corey dillion
NONONONONONONONONONONONONONO.
No.
People were complaining about adding Marshall saying he’d be a problem in the locker room, LJ is twice the headache at a fraction of the talent. Pass.
johnny
thats what im sayin plus remember everyone was sayin randy moss lost a step and no coach can get through to him when he was a raider than he becomes a patriot and proved everyone wrong
I’m half and half about this, we don’t need another downhill head-first guy, he WOULD be a monster and create a triple threat of a running core, but I love Shonne Greene and I think he needs the reps, Woodhead will be a good player in a year or two, why even involve him in this conversation? Bringing him on would be a reward type move, because yes- he’d be playing for his contract, and Rex is good at straighting out players and getting the best out of them..
the patriots kinda need a runningback too faulk is old and maroney is constantly getting hurt so lj for them makes perfect sense…the other only team i can see maybe picking him up is the ravens…i know they have ray rice but he is small and im sure they would like to have a bigger back especially im not hearing from mgahee this year
See fellow Jet fans, its not like we’d be signing him for a long term contract or would we end up using him all that much. He would end up being our 3rd RB, and that’s a hell of a player to have as a 3rd running back. What if Greene or TJ gets hurt? We will have woodhead running the ball all the time and that folks would be horrible, but if we have an starter type back who has a chip on his shoulder it would help out more then hurt.
Plus he is at an all time low, we can sign him for minimum for the rest of the year and that’s all. Next year we have Leon back and we are fine.
I would interview him, see if he’s ready to turn things around & play it by ear. When I was young, I said some dumbass things I regret.
This guy may still be a talent, however the Jets should not take that risk. This guy ruined the Kansas City locker room, and the Jets need no more distractions, Just beat Jacksonville and move on.
You’re all wrong…i don’t see why not. Leon got hurt…sure shonne is good now…but i don’t think he can do it all season. LJ is a legit beast when he can run…and behind faneca, mangold, woody, DaBrickashaw and co i really think he can succeed. i don’t think the locker room is such a big deal either. Rex does everything for his players. they love him. i think LJ can turn it around under Rex and our beast o-line
All i can say is i dont see the problem with getting as much talent as you can, and clearly this is a guy who has talent but was in a bad situation, ala Braylon Edwards.
I know hes getting up there in age, but he’s hardly done anything in the last couple years so the typical wear and tear may not apply here. He could have a resurgance, at least until his next payday. Don’t forsee this happening, but I for one would welcome him for this year at least.
i honestly think it wouldn’t be a bad idea. look, im sure the guy wanted out of KC that’s why he really didn’t care what he said or how he acted. just like Braylon wanting out of CLE now look at him..his head is in the game every game and wants nothing but to show everyone he’s a top WR.
i say give hm a 1 year deal after he clears waivers.
It wouldnt cost us any picks and what better team for him to showcase his talents than behind our beast OL and in NY.
The guy is looking for a new contract. He could giove us 5-6 monster games.
He will probably go to Pittsburgs or Philly though
No thanks
Just pay TJ he is still impressive at least to a 1 year deal in the uncapped year
ill take him just so the patriots dont take him and he runs for 200 yds aganst us you never have to much offense and if we are going to make the playoffs we need all the help we can get people play different when the team is playing for a playoff run he may just surprise you
this is sommething boneheaded to talk about. dudes a bum. let him do without the nfl and think about what he had.
Don’t need him, but I guess I won’t be pissed if we added him.
nah we dont need him
develop shonne green into the monster he will be.. chyea
No thank-you. We are not loosing games because of out running game. Not saying we couldn’t use some depth but not this guy. Lets go with what we got. I think we need to put the ball in Shonne Green’s hand a little more and play mistake free free football in all three phases and we’ll be ok.
ummm thats a tuff one. idunno i like shone green but didnt he just fumble and help us to lose that game. i like johnson every since penn state. i wont call him a cancer cause this guy showed up every game win or lose and the chiefs have been sucking for years now. i think i would rather have a nose tackel or de but what do i know im just a head coach. oh yea and guard cause fanaca is almost done.
Complete waste of time. We traded up in the draft to get Greene, we already have Jones… why spend money on a washed-up LJ?
Trust me, you aren’t going to pick him up and neither are the Pats, he isn’t going to clear waivers. Look for Washington to put a claim on him long before he clears.
I read that the Redskins were going after LJ, now that their own RB has a concussion.
If that’s the case, even though the Chiefs will have to pay LJ $2 million this year if he clears waivers, Dan Snyder could spend more than LJ is worth if we get into a bidding war, pricing Mike T out of the market.
Various statements signing LJ would send:
“Let’s not pay Leon but let’s pay LJ”
“We have more pressing needs but let’s sign another RB”
“Writing’s on the wall, TJ”
Also, is putting the word “receiver” next to Woodhead’s name really a reason to grab another back? Just because he wears 83 doesn’t mean he can no longer carry the ball (see Oakland garbage time).
i would just sign him so new england wont get him…or sign him and trade him to new england which will never happen
head coach
shonn greene did have a big fumble that miami game but that was a fluke if you look at his stats last year in iowa he never fumbled once so saying that theres a good chance that there is gonna be alot of carries between that miami game and the next time he fumbles again(hopefully)
im kind of indifferent. he certainly wont HURT us. then again, the loss of Leon does effect us greatly and adding LJ may help to fill his void. but what can he do that Jones cant? they are the same type back. im always definitely FOR adding talent to the roster. we’ll just have to see wut happens.
two words , Shonn Greene
No way.
its intriguing, but I dont see the point, the team is fine in the red zone, they are fine in short yardage, and if he came in thats all we would need him for we already have a #1 RB. he would fit more with the Giants who need a short yardage/goaline back
we don’t need him, but i bet you the patriots will get him
TJ is on his way out. Get the guy some sensitivity training and sign him. I want Arthur Jones on this team.
Stop hating on Thomas Jones. The man was a beast last year, and he’s bringing it this year.
The only reason to sign LJ is to spell TJ, shift the pace & style of our run attack, but we already have Shonn G for that.
And we have much more serious needs, like finding a Corner to play opposite Revis (Lito’s missed more games than he’s played), or finding a bona fide NT.

So I’m bored and procrastinating doing reading and I found this vintage Chad Pennington on Sesame Street clip on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/SesameStreet#p/u/281/sSb_n2KgjqQ
And here’s the other Jets classic appearance in honor of the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street- sad that this was just a few years ago and none of these players are on the team anymore. But Chad actually having a strong arm for the first time ever always cracks me up.
Plus maybe Elmo has discovered the key to us beating the Fins haha.
SIGN HIM ASAP!!!!!!!!!! I don’t want to see New England sign him and then he runs through the Jets defense when they’re probably playing for first place in two weeks…The Jets can’t count on Greene and Woodhead to back up Jones…Also, Jones is older and will tire towards the end of the season…The Jets will need someone else to help carry the load and they can’t count on a rookie (Greene)…Larry Johnson is still under 30 and he’s still got a lot left in the tank…He just needs a change of scenery (like Edwards and Moss in New England)..Johnson was the best running back in the league just a couple of season’s ago (with all due respect to lt)…Having Johnson will also force Schotty to call more running plays and the Jets can become the smash-mouth team Ryan desperately craves!!! It’s a win-win situation…Do it already before Belichick does and Johnson runs the Patriots to another Superbowl!!!!!!!
IMO we are very tight from a cap perspective in 2009, I just don’t think we have the room without cutting some one. If we could squeeze Larry in, it would make any other emergancy move almost impossible for the rest of the season
I think LJ is a good back but he has to much baggage. The jets are pretty solid at running back even without Leon. If you sign him which one do you cut at the end of the year. I Think TJ has proven that even with his age he very valuable to this jets team we must keep him and leon and get them a contract.
Jones is 8th in the league in rushing and Johnson is going to turn 30 in a week. I don’t think this is a move they’ll really consider, because it’s not like Johnson brings a new aspect to the backfield. We already have two hammers (Jones & Greene) and adding another power back will just give us more of the same.
However, if we can get him on the cheap in case we make a playoff push, then maybe that’d be something to consider.
Got to love my fellow Jets fans. mention any player and instantly there’s a rush to disparage him. It’s always plays out the same; he’s a cancer, can’t play or it’s the old fall back let’s stick with what we have, because all of a sudden every player on the team is or will be a pro bowler! well we heard some, not all of the above this summer when Miles Austin was talked about, I wonder where all those future Gms are today.
I not even saying LJ should or shouldn’t be picked up but! a little less neg. hyperbole would be refreshing.
majasko,
Name me one positive about this guy. He quits on his team. He talks negatively about his coach & organization. He averages 2.7 yards per carry. He’s 30. He had 2500 and 37 TD’s in two season, from ‘05-’07, and has 1791 and 8 td’s in 3 seasons since (including this one).
Jones, meanwhile, has 3135 yards and 21 td’s in that same time span. And don’t give me the “his line is better” argument because in 2006 the Jets had the worst offensive line in football.
I’ll keep my hard working, blue collar workhorse RB who pounds defenses like waves hitting the beach, rather than bring on a spoiled, negative, egomaniac who puts himself before the team.
I don’t care about his rep.
All I care about is his history. Two years of being drastically over used, followed by two and a half years of miserable production.
He’s clearly done. Pass.
how old is that? stupid mangina kudos to penn!!!
lavern is a traitor!!!
Man, the hatred against Woodhead never ceases to amaze me! The kid has done nothing but set college records, Jets preseason records, NFL day stats which would make Bo Jackson blush, and in his only carries this year, he impressed with a 16 yard carry.
What’s the hate for? Give the guy a chance at recieving out of the backfield or as a 3rd down back, reciever ect. Hate hate hate!
