Until mathematically eliminated, we apologize in advance, but a lot of the talk around here could be what the rest of the season could look like, and what would need to transpire for the Jets to climb out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves. While the Chargers win over the Giants might make us happy that our cousins or friends are miserable, it might have been the start of something that as Jets fans you don’t want to see.

In the Jets’ case, their best shot to make the playoffs will be as one of the two wild cards. But don’t just look at the records as we move through the season. The real devil is the number of teams you must leapfrog to get into sixth place.

So, root for the Broncos, Jets fans. You don’t want another potential wild-card team to get cozy up there.

Graham makes a good point when you look at the stats. If Denver can keep their throttlehold of the West, and not allow a team like the falling back to the pack, you want them to keep making distance. Rooting against teams outside our division can be good, but you have to be careful where you place emphasis. The more the Chargers win now, the more likely they are to cement that sixth spot.

You’d hope your team controls their own destiny, and basically as long as they go 7-1 or 8-0 they do … was that mean to write?

  1. But i have money on the Steelers :(

  2. 10-6 isn’t getting in, it just isn’t. We need to go 7-1 at minimum. Basically we need to win either @Indy or @NE and win the rest of the games.

Who’s optimistic enough that they think that will happen?

  3. 6-2 is the best case scenario.

  4. 10-6 could win the division

the pats are at indy, home vs jets, at NO and at MIA coming up. they very easily could go 1-3 in that stretch

their D has been poor against the run and they currently have their starting LT and Center down with knee injuries.

this team is not the 2007 pats. i dont understand why everyone is simply handing them the division

  5. i dont know why we just gave up on the div if we win sunday and ne loses to indy which lets be honest isnt a crazy string of events then we are playing for first place in ne the week after. everyone needs to stop putting a record on what we need to get in. root for indy and the jets next week and if all goes well were playing for first place in the east

  6. It’s too early to tell and fact of the matter is, like Bassett said, Jets have to do their part. The troubling scenarios are the Broncos and Bengals who currently lead their divisions. If they fall, it would be trouble. At the same time, the Jets have been Houston. We get our shot at Cincinnati at home. Pittsburgh plays Baltimore (x2), Cincinnati, GB, Denver, Miami. SD plays Denver, Dallas, and Cincy. So on and so forth. Way too early to tell. All that matters is that we’re only 1.5 back with 8 games to play.

  7. The bugger of it is that the best record the Jets can get in the division is 3-3, which shrinks the margin of error even more. Even if they finish 10-6, they could still miss the playoffs thanks to that awful Bills loss.

  8. beat the Pats and division record won’t matter at all

  9. I knew going into this year playoffs would be within reach but a SB appearance would be a long shot.

Although I have never asked much in 34 years of rooting for this team but if they win the division championship that would be awesome!, Add a division title and a playoff birth, well then that would be icing on the cake!

  10. Maybe I’ve been a Jet fan too long, but I’m not paying any attention to these playoff scenarios. The goal for this year is to see Sanchez develop as a QB and Rex as a coach. If we end the season seeing progress from both of them, and then focus on both lines in the draft (especially defense) then I’m happy. If we make the playoffs, it’s gravy, but I don’t see that happening this year, so why torture myself worrying about it.

  11. agree its too early to figure out rooting interests, too much can happen. when we get to thxgiving it will be clearer. its all about TCBin…. taking care of business.

  12. Even if the pats go 1-3 in their next 4, which is not a given, that leaves them with 5 losses. Who else are they gonna lose to? Carolina? Houston? I doubt it. The jets just need win their games, 6-2 minimum, and hope they get help. I don’t think it will happen, but i haven’t given up hope just yet.

  13. bernie – so smart

Playoffs with a rookie quarterback? At the start of the season I thought we would be 0-4 and I was okay with that!

All I need this season is be shown that Sanchez is going to be good and that Rex is going to be good.

Then no matter what happens this season we will look at how well the draft goes and start to get our hopes up for next season where I would hope for the playoffs.

The the season after that hope for a superbowl!

  14. remember were the only team to go up to foxboro and beat the pats after they lost one the week before we did it twice..whatever happens happens…got jets

  15. Playoffs!?!? We talking playoffs?!? For the Jets !?! that became a fantasy after the Bufallo game. I’m still piss off about that game.

  16. Why even bother with playoffs if we’re not going to win? If I’m King Rex I’m telling the Men in no uncertain terms we take each week one at a time, but we Will go 7-1 (minimum) for the stretch (just as we should have for the first half! Then, win the division outright, or at least earn rather than fall into a WC spot, and go into playoffs hot.

If we lose more than 2 I’m viewing this simply as a “rookie” season lost due to the inevitable rookie mistakes. Either way, I’ve been impressed by the team this year enough so that I’m the most optmistic as a fan as I can recall in in last 41 years.

  17. Sanchez’ (and Rex’s) maturation is more important than the playoffs. But, it would be great for Sanchez to get a playoff game under his belt. Playoff experience is invaluable for a young QB and is one of the many reasons why Big Ben has an edge on his 2004 fellow QBs (10 playoff games to 7 for Eli to 6 for Rivers).

  18. One can only hope that the JETS continue to tank so Rex unloads many of the underperforming members of the over rated defense.

  19. …yeah, that 2nd ranked defense is horrible. All smoke and mirrors.

  20. The Ed(itor) – I thought after first Miami game that you had left us and foresaken Gang Green? If not, hoping you will lose the tood, and get back to focusing on what’s good about this team rather than whining like a Dolphins fan!

  21. First Ed(itor) jumps ship and now he calls the best part of our team overrated?

    Go back to bed Ed….

  22. I will look at playoff scenarios every week for every season I watch. While I watch the Jets games, I don’t think about anything but them winning, and the development of our players and coaching long-term. But since quitting fantasy football (after 15 years it just ruined football for me), I like to know who I prefer to win any other game I may be watching. I enjoy having a rooting interest, and playoffs is what it is all about. So I enjoy laying out the scenarios (especially in a bye week) even in the craziest of long-shots. When they are mathematically eliminated, my focus shifts.

So if you don’t want to pay attention to that stuff and not care who we need to win or lose, that’s fine. But don’t tell me I shouldn’t do it because it is pointless, or because of some stupid jinx. In 2003 when the Jets were 2-6 I was thinking about how we can win this thing, and we took the division. It is always possible and I’ll always think ahead and most importantly, I never get disappointed by it because I am realist who knows the odds are long. Just because you may not be able to think ahead without buying Super Bowl tickets when we were 8-3 last year, doesn’t mean I can’t think about situations where we can win this division and get Sanchez some playoff experience.

and 2g — good point about the Pats, they wont lose the last game of the year with the division on the line. So the scenarios are certainly thinning and it seems more likely that we can eek past Cincy or SD for the WC.
