PSA: Week Nine .. or Twenty Nine?

by Bassett on November 9th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

If you wonder why I’ve been remiss, absent minded, aloof this fall, it’s not without good reason. I’ve got to confess that I’ve got something on my mind.

Just about five years ago to the day, I announced my engagement and today I’ll divulge one of the worst kept secrets on this blog (for those who have tailgated with me recently). My wife and I are pregnant with our first .. a masculine child, as Luca Brasi might say … due January 23rd 2010. Mrs. TheJetsBlog is doing well, tired, yet happily directing me in the complicated ritual known as birthing classes, books on husband-coached-deliveries, and the inimitable “setting up of the nursery” — don’t worry it’s already painted green.

Here’s a photo of the little guy from an ultrasound a few months back.

ooh he has your moody fandom!!

We’re still deliberating on names, so if you want to help, nominate some good Jets names (i.e. Curtis Martin Bassett) and I’ll give them a go on the wife this week. Unlike Eric Mangini, I probably have less say in my home. Good nominations will get into a poll tomorrow, and you can have your vote on what you like best.

Congrads! Can he play special teams?

  2. avatar jeffjets12 says:

how about a first name starting w/ a “t” and a middle name starting w/ a “j” so his initials are TJB

  3. avatar Brendan says:

    Haha, good idea Jeff.

  4. avatar JesusRevis says:

    I would go for Darrelle.

    hahaha

  5. avatar PatrickC says:

D’Brickashaw Basset. Just rolls off the tongue.

  6. avatar Bassett says:

    lol … nice idea jeff!

  7. avatar Brendan says:

Well, my middle name is James. Also could use Joseph, Jonathan, Jay, Joshua, Jake…if you’re 1/2 as persuasive talking to your wife as you are to Jet-haters, then I think you can win the naming rights.

  8. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    Congrats Bassett!!!!!

David Bassett.. middle name: Clowney. LOL

the poor kid will get messed with big time if anyone found out the middle name was “clowney” though…

    jeffjets12, that’s a good one!

  9. avatar NJets says:

    Congrats Basset

Some advice… if you raise him to be a Jets fan… please please please raise him to be a Yankee fan too. I am one of “those” and I gotta tell you, its been the only thing keeping me sane for the past 15 years.

Raising someone a Jets/Mets fan is abusive and should be stopped.

  10. avatar Brendan says:

Hey NJets! I take exception to that haha (although it is somewhat true)

  11. avatar nyckage says:

    Congrats Bassett

Here’s one way you fail as a father, you let the kid become a Giants fan

  12. avatar Bassett says:

Great suggestions everyone, keep ‘em coming.

NJets I am one of “those” too, so I’ll do my best … the Knicks or Rangers on the other hand … he’s on his own. :)

  13. avatar ganggreen4ever says:

cmon you definetely have to try and get a willie or a joe in the name somewhere, or at least a wayne, curtis, chad, or maybe (dare i say it) a Mark.

  14. avatar NJets says:

Ugh…Knicks and Rangers… he is definitely on his own there.

Maybe just keep him a two sport kid and teach him how to play Golf.. Turn him into a Golf prodigy by 10 years old. It could spell early retirement for you….

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Oh come on, Rangers are one of the good teams in hockey this year (yes, all hinging on a creaky groin/hip of one player).

The Knicks…ugh, see you in 2010.

  16. avatar oscarfactor says:

C’mon – it’a gotta be Joe Willie Bassett

  17. avatar Tom says:

    Thomas Jones Bassett

  18. avatar dylan says:

    congrats bud!

its gotta be chad the pennington bassett!

  19. avatar DavidN says:

Congrats and good luck w/ him. And too bad you couldn’t get him here by 12/31/09, as the ’09 tax credit would have been nice. ;)

And I ditto NJets sentiments – if you plague him w/ the Jets fandom/curse, give the boy some hope w/ the Yanks. The Yanks are the sports Yin to my Jets sports Yang.

And i definitely vote for Willie.

My girl & I are expecting a child on January 28th as well, and although we are having a girl, b4 we found out…I told my girl that if it was a boy then his name would be J’math or Jamath….after broadway Joe.

  21. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

Congratulations Bassett. Does this mean the end of Jetsblog Tailgates until 2010?

  22. avatar Row says:

    Wayne Washington Bassett, obviously

  23. avatar JesusRevis says:

Everyone is proposing such bland, common names that happen to exist among Jets players, such as Joe, Mark, and Thomas. How about a name like Lito, Darrelle, Calvin, Bart, Marques, Braylon, Jerricho or Shonn?

  24. avatar James in TN says:

Congratulations! Anything but Vernon will be a good choice.

    Go Jets!!!

  25. avatar SackDance99 says:

How about “Weeb”? The world could use another one.

  26. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

Haha, Shonn Jerricho Bassett. Good one Jesus!

  27. avatar Kevin1234512346 says:

    Doug Brien Basset? haah

  28. avatar MBI says:

I feel like Namath, Klecko, Maynard, or Jet would all be pretty in the running…I feel like some celebs have named their kid Jet, but I think one was Travolta’s kid who passed away so that could be bad luck.

Personally I vote for Namath Maynard Basset, rolls off the tongue.

  29. avatar MBI says:

Congrats and good luck by the way.

  30. avatar greg sec 130 says:

    congrats

  31. avatar MBI says:

If this was 2004 Laveranues Vilma Basset would be perfect. You could also go with combo names D’Namath Klecknard Basset. I’ll stop now.

  32. avatar AKA...Drew says:

The Jeff idea is a winner… TJB is a must

Lets go with Tyler Joseph Bassett.

    Congrats BB

  33. avatar Jets = Misery says:

    Congratulations

  34. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Thomas James Bassett

    or

    Tyronne Jamaal Bassett

  35. avatar Chrebookie says:

    Congrats Bassett-
My daughter was born 2/3/08- Literally moments after the Giants won the Superbowl.
I was able to keep the game on in the delivery room (thank you epidural!). Everyone was watching the game, Nurses and Doctor included, except for my fiance (yeah one of those things….). We all can remember the Tyree catch, but for me it was a little different.
My fiance had just finished one of her last pushes and I could see it out of the corner of my eye. I celebrated the catch, the Doc and nurses turned to see it as well. Everyone was like holy cr*p they are gonna beat the 18-0 Pats.
Meanwhile my fiance is moments from delivering the world a new Jets fan. I turned to her and told her: “This is the greatest day ever; the Pats are gonna lose, we are about to bring the newest generation in the world, my grandfather is a HUGE Giants fan so he would be doublly happy. This is the greatest day ever.”
She told me to “Shut the f* up. Just shut up.”
Luckily she pushed again right after that. I think the Doc initiated that to keep her from killing me.
By the time Eli was holding his Lombardi trophy, I was holding mine as well.
Just thought I would share cause your due date is the week before Super Sunday. So was ours.

and I like Al Wayne Bassett. But just know your cursing your child for life, just like I was cursed for life and so is my daughter. Cursed by being a JETS fan.

  36. congrats, dude. d’brickshaw and laverneus are obvious choices.

  37. that would be laveranues, of course.

  38. avatar Doug says:

  44. avatar GoalieTJ1 says:

  45. avatar LJ says:

  46. avatar jeff i says:

you can teach the baby how to do the shovel pass in the sandbox

  47. avatar Dave75 says:

How about Wayne Joseph Bassett or Wayne Joseph for Chrebet and Namath?

Or you could name him Mo Sione Bassett

  48. Congrats, man. Just had my 2nd boy 3 months ago. Whatever you call him, you will never be the same.

  49. avatar fattyboomboom says:

  50. avatar Doctor K says:

A child changes your life forever. Congratulations! It doesn’t matter what his name is, he’ll always be yours. Much like the Jets.

  51. avatar Bent says:

It’s got to be Nuu Bassett, surely.

  52. avatar Matt M says:

    Just saw this today–congrats Bassett!

Clearly, Mark Weeb Bassett. (Naming after the QB is a little easier this year.)
