Link: Edwards on the Season So Far
Braylon Edwards is keeping a good perspective on the Jets, how the season is going, and what the future holds for him.
“I really like this situation,” Edwards said. “I like the organization from top to bottom. I like the players. I gel well with these guys. I like the city [and] everything about this situation.
“I’d like to be here, a Jet after this year. So for me, I’m going into it giving it all that I have, show that I deserve to be here and that I’m the type of player that they can count on, that they can depend on.
“Going in, week in and week out, Monday through Sunday, I am trying to do everything I can the right way to prove to these guys who I am and I’m the guy that they need.”
Clearly the kid can ball … those two touchdowns against the Dolphins in those two games were very impressive … it’s been a long time … maybe ever since I’ve seen anyone do stuff like that in the Jets uni. So it’s nice to see this healthy, well-adjusted perspective from him. There is always the concern that he’s being a good citizen for year one, and the rest is a mess. But I don’t get that sense from him so far. He and Cleveland were ill-fated from the start, he’s got a solid friend in Rhodes who will help to level him, but at the same time sherpa him into the inevitable New York scene that he’s going to get more involved in.

i think it may be difficult to give this guy a contract he will be happy with while taking care of leon at the same time. also – dbrick and revis will need to be dealt with in the near future. i am confident that Mr T will make this all work. i think he was smart to not negotiate a deal with edwards right after the trade. but it is clear to me that based on what we gave up to get edwards, we want to extend and keep him in green and white
With no cap in 2010 we should be able to deal with all of our “keepers”. Tannenbaum is best a juggling $$.
I would prefer a stud WR over a 3rd down/return specialist, although I love Leon. With a full camp, and time to gel with Sanchez he can become a top 5 receiver. As for Leon, the injury will dictate alot of what will happen, I am not sure about Franchise tags if there is no cap, so it will be interesting. I hope that the owners do not give up on revenue sharing, and salary cap, otherwise the NFL will become MLB which is almost unwatchable, just my opinion of course.
The Jets may have actually lucked out by having Leon get injured. Maybe this injury will lower his market value drastically, allowing the Jets to re-sign him to a much cheaper deal and thus leaving us with more money to re-sign Edwards. Just a though.
Mangold, Brick, Leon, Edwards, eventually Revis
Mr T better hope its uncapped next year…lol
Not bad for a team that cant draft anyone huh?
who will be able to shed in the next couple years that are big cap hogs? to free up cash for these guys?
faneca/woody
Thomas Jones-6.5 million dollar cap savings if cut next year
we have to sign him this is the wr we have all wanted for a long time and leaves us a very easy first rd pick. get the best possible pass rushin DE we can find.
cimini provided this table today:
Clearly 8 starts is not a predictor of future results:
After 8 starts:
Players Pct. Yds TD INT W-L Rate
Chad Pennington 72.4 1,836 13 4 5-3 106.9
Ray Lucas 59.3 1,467 14 4 5-3 89.1
Ken O’Brien 57.7 1,773 8 8 3-5 76.0
Brooks Bollinger 56.3 1,205 5 6 1-7 69.3
Joe Namath* 50.0 1,709 13 13 2-5-1 68.0
Mark Sanchez* 53.5 1,443 8 10 4-4 67.9
Kellen Clemens 52.6 1,427 5 8 3-5 64.7

Richard Todd* 41.2 779 3 11 2-6 33.9
Shaun Ellis 3.5 million cap savings
Ben Hartstock 1.25 million cap savings
Jeff, are you looking at a list of salaries from next year? I can’t find one online myself.
Shephard is obviously a goner.
As is Clemens.
Ellis is a big number, DeVito is pencilled in here.
Douglass?
Faneca could go, Woody probably stays and moves inside to G.
Like it or not Jenks may be gone.
B Thomas can go if necessary.
TJ’s one remaining year at 5M is still reasonable if he makes it through 2009 healthy.
Oh, forgot GHOLSTON.
Sheppard may not necessarily be a goner. What is likely to happen (assuming he comes back healthy after the bye and contributes) is the Jets release him to avoid his $10m bonus and then resign him to a reasonable deal (much like the Saints did with Vilma).
I don’t know if I’d want to get rid of Ellis. Almost all of us Jets fans realize that next year may be the year where we take a big step forward in terms of our standing in this league. It is possible we make a run and are championship-caliber by season’s end. I don’t know if we can afford not to have Ellis there and give full reign to Devito. Devito plays hard as hell and is a good player in a rotation, but Ellis can get sacks and change a game from a 3-4 DE spot, which is not an easy thing to do. Factor in that we’ll probably be drafting more depth there and Ellis will be vital in bringing those guys along and up to speed in this defense, I’d like to keep him around.

great site for all info salary cap related
if 2010 is uncapped, it is obviously less of an issue. as terrible as faneca is in pass protection, i see us keeping him another year. woody also because of his versatility.
i see TJ staying as he has been a good, productive soldier for us, and Leon is a big question after coming off his injury
but after 2010, we will have TJ, BT, Ellis, Faneca and Woody all coming off the books. that is a crapload of cap space, and mr T is going to need it with the young players he will extend
Brian,
Thank you! This is literally what I’ve been scouring the internet for. And in one of those “derrrrrrrrrr” moments, it was right in my firefox favorites.
EDWARDS MUCH LIKE RAY LEWIS BACK IN THE DAYS IS RUNNING FROM THE LAW. RAY DID WELL ADN STILL IS!!! HOPEFULLY NY WILL BE A SAFEHAVEN FOR EDWARDS. HE IS A GOOD PLAYER. USUALLY PLAYERS PLAY BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SCARED!!! HE MIGHT NOT NEED MUCH MONEY AS LONG AS HE IS NOT IN JAIL. LOL
Seriously, can we cut Gholston retroactively and save some past dollars? Got to look at drafting a big, young-stud nose tackle. Even if we get Jenkins back, the guy can’t stay on the field.
I may be wrong but I think Edwards feels he is finally where he always wanted to be and is going to try and make the most of this opportunity. Playing in THE major market in the NFL has got to add 20 -30% to the value of any contract for a star player in terms of endorsements and opportunities outside the game and that is what motivates Edwards.
Sign him and we have the makings of an outstanding passing attack for the next 5 years+.
I’ll say the same thing I said in the ‘Transcript’ post last night: if the Jets don’t extend Braylon, it’s going to be the biggest offseason disappointment in a LONG time. He is essential to the development of Sanchez, as is Cotchery. Those two will help this kid immensely in speeding up the development process. The hope of having both here and healthy next season is a big reason for the optimism for what we can do in 2010.
I’d be shocked if Edwards isn’t signed. Guys with Edwards’ size, speed and game-breaking ability are a rarity in the NFL. For every tall, fast WR drafted, very few actually pan out. The Jets now have one on their roster and he’s still only 26 years old. I’m hoping that his past issues and his desire to stay a Jet means that he’ll take a hometown discount, like Moss in NE. He has to want to settle down and he could become a huge star in NY. IMO, he’s the most important guy that Tanny needs to sign; he is vital for the offense’s future. He really was the missing piece of the puzzle on offense. With a full off-season and training camp with Sanchez, this offense could become explosive.
I just cant imagine the Jets making this trade without full intentions of signing him to a long term contract. It wouldn’t make any sense.
I’ll say this, I’ve seen alot of heart in Edwards since joining the Jets. He def needs to be resigned, with him and J-Co and an older improved Sanchez this offense can become amazing for years to come.
Here’s the TD catch/brawl from last Sunday:

Also, fans keep on linking signing Edwards to signing Leon. I think there will be a lot of veteran contracts re-worked and extended for cap purposes. Tanny has worked magic with the cap and if 2010 is uncapped, there’s probably no NFL franchise more poised to take maximum advantage. The plan has always been to field a Super Bowl contender to match the opening of the new stadium. With Edwards, that possibility comes much closer to being a reality.
Man, that guy can really beast some DB’s. I think you can tell the difference between someone happy because they just did something great, and someone happy because they did something great for the team. Watching that clip, you can see Edwards feeding off the crowd and his teammates. I think things just got so toxic in Cleveland that he was drowning. He’s here now, with a positive regime, with a solid locker room and happy that he’s been given a chance to prove himself. I genuinely believe he is playing for the right reasons and pray the Jets sign him.
I hope its not effecting Edwards mentally that since he’s been here the Jets have gone 1-3 and in his 2 best games (both against Miami) the Jets have lost in heart breaking fashion.
Hopefully he will feel comfortable here and appreciated, and will want to stay.
Everybody knows Edwards has an pretty big ego and is interested in modeling and fashion and promoting himself. The best place for him to do this is in NY.
No i have no problem with that but he has made these comments in the past and even he realizes if he plays well here he will be a marketing star.
From what was printed about Braylon and the response from some of the Jet haters on this site, this guy was supposed to be the biggest primadonna locker room cancer around, TO Jr. I have seen the complete opposite
In the the few games he has been here all Ive seen from the guy is effort and play-making ability. That catches he made in the two Miami games were unreal, showing true grit and determination.
But a surprisingly great thing about Braylon is that when Sanchez struggles throughout a series or game, you see Braylon on the sidelines with him, talking to him, encouraging him. You never see him whining or complaining, he is in the moment at gametime, giving the team all he’s got.
The numbers dont jump out at you, but in essence this four game stretch since he came over has been like OTA’s, training camp and preseason all in one. He is learning to play with a rookie QB, who himself is learning the pro game, but the flashes and potential for greatness are there.
We absolutely MUST, HAVE TO, NO QUESTION re-sign Braylon. I dont care what he did, said, dropped in Cleveland. All the guy has done in his Jet tenure is play his balls off within the team, made plays when given the opportunity and show that he WANTS TO BE HERE. Sanchez to Edwards could be a sweet familiar sound to Jet fans for the better part of a decade
My own assessment of Edwards is that he is a popular and well-spoken member of the team. There was not a hint of “locker room cancer” about him.
The Jets can sign Edwards to an RFA tender at the end of the season if there’s no cap. This will ensure that they recoup the picks given up if they don’t retain him, which I expect they will.
The Jets may be better off if there is a cap in 2010. Unlike some teams, they are prepared for that eventuality. If there is a cap, don’t expect a big spending spree. In my opinion, they are more likely to use the opportunity to create future cap space in order to give them a competitive advantage in the years ahead.
Braylon is an absolute must have just the presence in the red zone for the fade…..you have to bring Leon back no questions…Ellis is the longest tenured jet and he should be back also hes just the man…the big cat..Brian Thomas idk he hasnt done much this year…I think id rather see vernon gholston in there instead at least hes faster….lol
I would be one ecstatic Jet fan, if we can ink Braylon Edwards for the next four or five years. He is the real deal Holyfield. We had been begging for a big target, for years now. We finally have one of the better ones in the league. Best of all, he’s happy with us. Don’t let him get away, Tanny. Edwards is one of the key pieces to the puzzle, if we ever want to get to the SB.
Well, they should at least sign Ellis to a more reasonable deal. Thomas is a waste at this point, if it’s an uncapped year or he’s a free agent then they should cut him. Heck, if it’s an uncapped year they should cut Gholston as well.
ONCE HE GETS SIOGN WHO KNOWS HOW IT WILL AFFECT HIM. HE’LL PROBABLY START DROPPING PASSES. HIS CONTRACT SHOULD INCLUDE CATCHES MADE IN PRACTICE ALSO.
Next season is Ellis’ last under his current deal. At a salary of $3.335mil he has a reasonable salary as well. What I can see them doing is signing him an extension at a reasonable salary, but his cap figure isn’t crippling and he is a very valuable asset to this defense, especially as the D-line transitions to (hopefully) a younger core of players.
Misery – an uncapped year doesn’t save the Jets from the dead money when Gholston (or anyone else) is cut. The cap hit bites in the next capped year.
If anyones interested, SI.com has their midseason awards and predictions. Mangold, Harris, and Revis were on the all-pro team, and they counted Revis as an “outside the box” MVP candidate.
This is very random but does anyone know where I could find the “Brady Sucks” chant we had on week 2, I want to hear what it sounded like being broadcasted live on tv.
I truly believe Edwards wants to be here, and am aware Jets retain his rights in certain circumstances, but lets be clear, IF he becomes free the Jets will not be getting a NY discount.
While he has off field interests that make NY a nice option, there are other towns that serve him just as well.
Miami is a perfect fit, as will the potential new LA team.
And if they tender him and hold him to it, his team first attitude may disappear in a hurry.
Lets be real, his choir boy behavior has to do more with this being a contract year than his wanting to be a Jet for life. He will follow the money.
To clarify, I DO want them to sign him, I just dont think they will be getting a discount and believe there still remains some risk he reverts to his prior off field behavior once he is shown the money.
“The potential new LA team”
WOJF, is that team going to be up and running by next season? No. The only real threat I think is Miami because it has his college QB. But he really seems to love NY and Rhodes is one of his best friends, so, barring something unforeseen, we have to be the favorites to bring him back. God, I hope we bring him back.
Braylon — Keep up the good work. You have out performed your billing on all levels. I hope you are here for a long time to come.
