Buzz: Jets Not Interested in Johnson

While Larry Johnson’s availability is intriguing, it would seem that the Jets are not interested.

Despite an initial call from his agent, the Bears have decided against adding Johnson, a source tells La Canfora. Two other teams where dots could be connected – the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets – appear to be out. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin refused to discuss free agents earlier Tuesday, and the Steelers declined interest after being approached by Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer. The Jets also have no interest despite losing Leon Washington for the season, sources tell La Canfora.

Between soaking up most of their cap space, and adding a guy who by nature isn’t interested in fitting in, there’s enough reasons for the Jets to stay away from Johnson.

  1. Larry Johnson is no longer a star RB in the league. His time has fizzled much like Shaun Alexander’s career. Only difference is Alexander is hurt and LJ is just a douche.

If the Jets would have gotten him that would have been a huge mistake on their end.

  2. From what I’ve been reading, there’s a very good chance that he’s done for good now. I don’t think anyone will go near him at this point — too thin tread and too much baggage.

Nice to see him reap what he’s sown.

  3. Glad to hear the Jets aren’t interested L Johnson. With TJ and Shonn G, we don’t need him.

Also, we do have other serious needs, like finding a first rate Corner to play opposite Revis (Lito’s been out more games than he’s played), and a first rate NT to replace Big Jenx.

  4. MOUNT CODY middle-first round pick. done and done.

  5. Im content with the Jets starting Lowery opposite Revis as long as he continues to improve and the Jets continue to add solid veterans to back him up (i.e Strickland, Sheppard)

  6. Brendan – except he’s probably going top five…

We aren’t likely to find a replacement for him easily, but this scheme doesn’t necessarily need a guy like him to work. It’s more of a luxury to have a guy like him, not a necessity (unlike with the Mangini 3-4). They need defensive line talent, but it doesn’t have to be another Jenkins.

  7. Bent,

You really think he’s going to go top 5? I mean, he’s gigantic, but I’ve read a lot of scouting reports that say he translates more as a 2 down player in the NFL. And with Suh from Nebraska definitely a top 5 pick, what are the chances two DT’s go that early? I knew it was a slim-to-none chance Cody fell to where we’ll probably be, but is he really top 5 material?

  8. Ive seen him in mock drafts going anywhere from 6th to 19th. And I agree with Brendan, with Suh from Nebraska projected to go higher than Cody, we probably have a chance at getting him.

  9. Maybe he won’t go top five – that’s just something I’ve been saying for over a year now that I’ve decided to stick by. I’d agree that with Suh (justifiably) projected to go ahead of him then that makes it more likely he will fall a few spots. Guys that size that can play are so rare that they nearly always get picked higher than projected.

However, even if, let’s say, he goes 12th and the Jets pick 18th…do you really think the Jets would give up more picks to trade up again?

  10. Absolutely no reason to trade up for him, or anyone. I would even be even more inclined to trade back a few picks in the first round to get an extra second. There are a lot of DT/DE type guys (who project to be 3-4 DE’s) and quite a few pass rushers in that pick 25-60 range. Trading back to get a 2nd rounder would be a great way to lock up a DE, pass rusher, and OT.

  11. RB is not the problem. CB is not the problem. If it’s not obvious by now, special teams are the problem! Count a few…Trusnik gone, Carroll and others out last game,…oh, don’t forget Brad Smith! Remember who made all those kamakazi tackles the past three years? Smith…out hurt.

The Jets need help in this department and not because Miami killed them. It’s been obvious for weeks. And by they way, am I the only one who thinks Justin Miller is slow as molasses? Get rid of him!
