Buzz: Pats Sniffing Around Jets Door Again
The Patriots tried out a former Jet backfielder this week, according to National Football Post.
The New England Patriots tried out three free agent running backs today, according to a league source. The Patriots tried out Allen Ervin, Jehuu Caulcrick and Kestahn Moore … Caulcrick is a 255-pound fullback who previously played with the New York Jets.
Interesting, and with the Jets a week and a half away, not surprising. This seems to be a long-standing tradition between these teams, and Caulcrick is the latest pawn.
It might mean that the Patriots think that Fred Taylor will take longer to return to health than previously expected, but it also could be a move to take a peek at the Jets playbook. I was sorry to see Caulcrick go, but at the same time, I’m not sure he had converted well enough from tailback to fullback as the Jets had hoped.
This does bring to mind that the Jets are carrying four QBs (Kevin O’Connell former Patriot) on the roster right now, and I’d be surprised if someone doesn’t get shelved at that spot soon if the Jets are truly trying to make a playoff run. There’s other places where they could make some changes, like at running back, tight end, defensive line and having a fourth QB offers you nothing.
Thanks to Johan H. for sending this on …

A QB knows 100% of the playbook.
A RB probably knows 50%.
I’m just hoping for a 1st place matchup in 2 weeks.
i like O’conell so ii dont want to hear it.
KC is a goner after this year, so going forward, i see us with sanchez, ainge and O’connell
And hopefully, if they continue to improve, we’ll be able to move either Ainge or O’Connell for a pick.
Since KC’s contract is over after the season, you can probably guess who’s going to stay. And Ronnie is right, the RB doesn’t know the whole playbook while a QB knows the entire playbook so we still have an advantage.
I love the implicit paranoia. What bozo believes that Belicheck really needs to obtain information from Caulcrick? Teams constantly bring in free agents; this is just another example.
Poor Tony Richardson, he just can catch a break. We need to find a guy that he can pass the torch too.
Since the Ghost is lost on Defense how about moving him to Full Back? I hate to see the team toss-away all that money for a bench warmer!
Think about it; all he would need to do is get in the way, and push somebody. That’s kind of what he is doing now!
Anyone else think he would make a better Full Back then Jehuu Caulcrick?
Tish,
Belichick will use Caulcrick to obtain info on the offense. This has been going on for years. The Jets & Pats swap players, try to milk them dry of information, and then usually just release them. This is not just another example of a free agent being brought in, because these teams have a history of swapping players.
Is there any evidence that this pump-him-for-info thing actually works? The extent of info that a player knows is the playbook – that’s it. And by this point in the year, you can pretty much figure out an opponent’s playbook by looking at the 25 hours of game tape you have on them – not to mention pre-season and previous years’ tapes. The Browns know all of the Steelers’ plays; it doesn’t mean they can stop them.
Also, a player who got cut doesn’t help you at all with tendencies, since (a) those change year to year, and (b) his former coach is going to be smart enough to change up obvious tendencies anyway.
I think BB likes Jets players simply because he hopes that some of the similarities in system / scheme will make it easier for a guy to learn the new playbook and contribute on the practice field quickly.
let BB bring him in, it’s not gonna help Brady when he is being hit every down.
we are gonna beat the pats by our D, not our O.
Gholston does not like finding contact, yet you want him to initiate it now?
I see the coversation going something like this:
Belichick – Hi Jehuu, youre bigger than I thought. What do you think they will run on offense when they play us in 2 weeks?
Caulcrick – Well Bill, Have you met our OC B-Schott? The guy is instructed to run the ball but he thinks he is the real HC and basically does what he wants. So who the hell knows.
Belichick – Good point JC….What do you think they will do to us on when Brady has the ball.
Caulcrick – Well…have you read a newspaper Bill? Rex basically is going to blitz Brady until he bleeds and hope that he will get there. I am still bruised by having to practice against those. That Rex is amazing
Belichick – Well JC its was nice talking to you. We really have no intention on signing you but you were great at MSU and thanks for the visit
Caulcrick – Tells Bill to go F himself as he Rex Ryan rips off his “Caulcrick mask” and punches him in the face.
I’m sure there is some kind of information that Caulcrick has that Belly can use. No matter how small. The smaller the better. No one can notice. Footbal is so detailed and full of parity. We fans cant see certain things that coaches can. No matter how much we read and watch games you can never get information from actually playing. So who knows what Belly has in mind.
Haha Jose, you fix your caps lock key?
AKA Drew
That’s something KSK Rex would do, in real life Rex would kiss Bill’s rings
This would seem to be a genuine need for the Pats – they had to use Green-Ellis as a lead blocker because their blocking TE (Thomas, I think) was injured. Breaking through the line of scrimmage is a genuine weakness for the Patriots, so it would make sense for them to pick up a big FB.
F the pats
Just curious, isn’t the whole “were going to win with our D” the same mantra that was repeated before the last Dolphins game? You guys do have a soft schedule going forward but you keep losing to teams you should easily beat, rookie QB’s and HC’s will do that. I wouldn’t be chilling that first place champagne before the Pat’s game, a few sacks do not win games.
tell the pats to sniff my A$$. if that does not stop em i don’t know what will
AKA Drew…HILARIOUS…I JUST SPIT UP SOME COFFEE…I LOVE IT
